Chiefs React to Cutler Trade

From the Truman Sports Complex

“Really?”

“Is that April Fool’s a day late?”

“No way!”

As they took part in an event to benefit autism in a parking lot west of Arrowhead Stadium, members of the Chiefs secondary reacted to the news that the Denver Broncos traded quarterback Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears.

It’s safe to say there were no tears in the eyes of guys like safety Jon McGraw and cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr as they reacted to the deal.

“We don’t mind at all that he’s out of the division, heck out of the conference,” said Carr.

Added McGraw: “You always like to compete against the best and he was on his way to being one of the league’s better quarterbacks. I’m not going to say I’d wished he stayed, but they’ll find somebody else who can throw it too.”

Last year, the Broncos were 1-1 against the 2-14 Chiefs.  In the fourth game of the season, Cutler threw for 361 yards and one touchdown, but two interceptions as the Broncos lost 33-19.  The teams met again in Denver for 13th game of the season, with the Broncos winning 24-17.  Cutler threw for 286 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the victory.  That was the last game Denver won last season.

In four starts against the Chiefs in 2007-08, Cutler went 3-1 in the standings, completing 98 of 145 passes for 1,083 yards, eight touchdown passeds, four interceptions and two sacks.  He ran 18 times for 65 yards.

In return for sending Cutler and a 2009 fifth-round pick to the Bears, the Broncos received a 2009 first-round pick, a 2010 first-round pick, a 2009 third-round choice and quarterback Kyle Orton.

“That’s a lot for any player, but Jay Cutler has already proven himself in this league and that’s hard to find sometimes at quarterback,” said Flowers.

“He has a strong arm and he led his team,” said Carr. “There’s a lot of quarterbacks who can’t make the kind of throws that he can make.”

The Chiefs defensive backs have joined together as a group to “adopt” children with autism with a program they are calling “We’ve Got Your BACK.” They hope to bring a sense of belonging to autistic children, as well as their families. Groups involved in the “We’ve Got Your BACK” partnership include: Autism Speaks, Autism Society of the Heartland, Autism Alliance of Greater Kansas City and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City - Challenger Program.

Thursday, a number of defensive backs took part in an event with children and their families in Parking Lot N of the sports complex.

1st.. amazing work by the D-backs helping in KC with autism. My complete respect to them.

On Cutler.. thats ALOT to give up for a player. Herchel Walker-esque even. He’ll need to lead the Bears to multiple SuperBowl contending seasons to validate the trade and probably have to win one too!

Denver is loaded with picks now. Orton is no scrub either. Doesn’t throw deep very well (arm strength lacking) but in the ‘Patriots’ system they will run.. he won’t be asked to very often!

Denver has lots of draft picks. There will have to be lots of money to sign those picks, not sure how that will work. I cannot imagine figuring Orton will be as good as Cutler but he can play the game.

Now can we start worrying about the Chiefs and their picks. Mainly because the AFC West get real competitive this year. We need just a few FA’s to hit and the draft to be decent, then look out.

McDaniels better beware of Pat Bowlen’s patience. Herm Edwards thought Clark Hunt would be patient through a 2-14 season!

  • April 2, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

If Herm thought that he’s an idiot. Clark clearly stated that he expected improvement after the 4-12 season. That didn’t happen.

Anyway, this trade makes it even more obvious that we got ripped off in the Jared Allen trade! Cutler is maybe top 10 at his position, Jared was easily top-5 when we traded him.

When we first signed Pioli, i was disappointed it was too late to make a run at McDaniels. Now that I see that he couldn’t even properly handle this situation, I’m glad we didn’t have a chance to consider him!

OK, I go back on what I said earlier in that there was no way that the Chiefs could find a partener to trade the #3 pick. Denver now needs a franchise QB. They have two top 20 picks. They probably do not want to make that trade with the Chiefs but they may be forced to. Any other team that was targeting Sanchez may also try to get up in the draft so that may push the trade partner up to the 3rd pick. I am sure that Pioli would like to trade his #3 pick and if he is as good as we think he may now get the chance.

This is getting wild. I think Cutler will be a great fit in Chicogo, I was putting my money on the Bears all along. Also the Chiefs just may benefit more than we think from this whole mess.

    Let the fun begin!

Honestly, I wouldnt give up a first for cutler….hes not my kind of QB, hes a head case, not a leader…..nice arm, but hes basically jeff george minus the mom coming on the field during a game.

Now Denver has a ton of picks, honestly I liked Cutler in the division, I dont think hes a winner, I think hes an 8-8 stat machine that lacks a clutch gene.

Sad to say, Denver made a great move, when their leverage was compromised.

Chiefs didnt get ripped off in the Jared Allen trade. Everyone knew JA wasnt going to sign longterm with the Chiefs, and the Chiefs were lucky that Minnesotta stepped up with that offer. Losing JA destroyed our defense, but it really didnt help the Vikings all too much. Although the chiefs got solid production from LT Albert, the team still went 2-14.

In the same manner, Denver hasnt gotten into the postseason with Cutler. When Bowlen made the trade comment, most knew Jay was no longer a Donk and that it might have destroyed trade value. Instead, Chicago stepped up with a Huge offer. All those draft picks they will have this yr (like the Chiefs had last yr) might not make any diffrence.

They say that you never see a young franchise QB or pass rusher traded anymore, but it has happened in 2 consecutive years in the AFC west. For the chiefs and the Vikings, thate trade hasnt resulted in more postseason wins. Who knows at this point if the same can be said about the bears and the donks. One can only hope.

alex, Cutler is one of the 5 best QB’s in the league. He is extremely comptetive and skilled. He will improve the Bears offense immensly and the Chiefs are very fortunate that they will not have to face him twice a year.

The Bears gave a lot but it was not just to get the proven franchise QB that they have been looking for for years but also to block two interested division rivals from getting thier hands on him. I think the Bears made a great trade. I am not so convinced of the Broncos however. They desperately needed to address their Defense but all of a sudden they are now in need of a franchise QB. They may just have to use those draft picks to draft one and if they do he won’t be a proven one.

Denver just pulled the most intelligent bait and switch in recent history.
The Bears will rue this day for many, many years to come.
Denver just schooled every team in the AFC, and some in the NFC. How genus was that move to get two first round picks for an highly overrated QB, with type II diabetes, and a personality disorder extraordinaire? The guy has a 17 and 20 record as a starter, and has never even sniffed a playoff game. Once again Denver is bold and decisive while KC is locked in double neutral, with paralysis bu analysis.
Young Mr. McDaniels and Denver’s new GM just left everyone else in the west walking away talking to themselves. Yes the same two men that all you self proclaimed football wise guys have been mocking, and that are celebrating the demise of their franchise, are going to look even more stupid in the near future, when Denver is competing for division titles and making the playoffs, and the Chiefs are still trying to figure out if they should have signed some of the real talent that was available this off season.
Yes, go on Cheer! Dummies! Cheer!

Run don’t walk to get your Chiefs tickets!

    SUCKERS!!!!!

True Red And Gold, if your were any less intelligent, you’d have to be on life support!!

    Jay Cutler = Jeff George
Let’s hope the Donkees screw up all those picks.

  • April 3, 2009  - Josh says:

Sounds like some donkey fans (anonabob) have found out about our site. Oh well, haters are everywhere.

As far as the trade Denver did do good to get that many picks for a guy like Cutler, but I have to agree that they still haven’t moved forward, they went backwards pretty much. They don’t have a QB that can throw against our young secondary and their defense is still going to suck. And who will be running the ball for them? Anyway, I think it is great that we might have a chance to trade down now and try and improve both our Offensive and Defensive lines. We might even have trade partners trying to pick up Chris Wells, doubtful but you never know - it seems more trades are taking place on draft day than in the past.

Denver made a great deal? They got rid of a franchise qb so they can get a pick that can be added to their other first round pick to roll the dice on one of the guys coming out this year. I think the Bears will enjoy the playoffs this year.

“They don’t have a QB that can throw against our young secondary and their defense is still going to suck. And who will be running the ball for them?”

The Broncos have signed Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington, and Lamont Jordan…to run the ball.

I think they’ll use their extra draft picks to work on their Defense…instead of going after a QB.

To the Denver Donkeys fan up there masquerading as “Bob Gretz” WO HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW!!!!

Sucks to be a Donkey fan….don’t it?

You know, last night I listened to the JT The Brick Show on Fox Sports Radio, and he said that since Cutler was traded, this was the time for the Raiders to win the division. He also stated that JaMarcus Russell was coming into his own out there. ARE YOU KIDDIN’ ME?!?!? Maybe losin’ a little weight, but that’s it! Comparing JaMarcus Russell to the likes of Philip Rivers and even Matt Cassel is just plain wrong! The guy hasn’t showed us anything but eatin’ burgers! I’m not tryin’ to bash the guy so much, but don’t compare him to Philip Rivers.

When you look at how da Bears draft the price is less a big deal.

  • April 5, 2009  - alex k says:

its a big deal because now the broncos make those picks….

they got a hershall walker type deal in terms of an insane amount of picks, even a qb with starting experience, for the guy who was 2nd in INT’s last year while only being sacked 12 times? Type 2 Diabetes…

Add in that hes just flat out not a leader, not the guy you build around, hes proven that, sorry but 17-20 doesnt cut it…in the AFC West…look at Cassel’s numbers vs the afc west, it would inflate his numbers had he played 3 AFC west teams twice..
