Camp Practice Update 8/12 P.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The Chiefs worked long and hard in their second practice of Wednesday and wrapped up a day where the offense got a little bit better.

One group that’s struggling on the offensive side is the quarterbacks. Whether it’s Matt Cassel, or Brodie Croyle, or Tyler Thigpen there is no consistency out of that position. I’ll leave Matt Gutierrez out because he doesn’t get enough snaps.

Here’s a perfect example from Wednesday’s P.M. practice. Thigpen was in and connected on a long pass play to WR Taurus Johnson that beat CB Ricardo Colclough. Johnson ran a nice route and Thigpen delivered the ball right on the button.

On the next play, Thigpen stood in against a heavy rush and ended up jumping up in the air to throw the ball over the defensive front. Only problem is there was no receiver he was throwing it too. It looked like he was trying to throw it away, but it was a dangerous pass, the type that get picked off on a regular basis.

Consistency is what the Chiefs lack right now on the offensive side of the ball and it starts with the triggermen at quarterback.

Other notes from the afternoon work:

– The same six players who missed the morning practice also missed the afternoon work: ILB Zach Thomas, Gs Wade Smith and Tavares Washington, RB Kolby Smith, TE Jake O’Connell and S DaJuan Morgan.

– In a one-on-one pass protection/rush drill, NT Ron Edwards rocked rookie guard Colin Brown with a blow under the chin that knocked his head back.

– WR Amani Toomer showed a burst of speed on a route and grabbed a long throw with his fingertips.

– Rookie WR Quinten Lawrence heard about it from the coaches after he ran the wrong route.

– S Jon McGraw picked off a Thigpen pass.

– OLB Andy Studebaker continues to take a few plays at deep snapper, but continues to be high with his snaps.

– WRs Rodney Wright and Lawrence are the only guys working as punt returners.

The reports for the QB’s started off good and have become progressively worse. I wouldn’t be worried though, the defense is seeing the same looks day in and day out, they’re going to catch on eventually. People have said that Cassel isn’t a one year wonder, and we’ve seen what Thigpen is capable of. Let’s just be patient and see how they perform over the preseason.

  • August 12, 2009  - Dustin says:

I’m not worried about the Offense.. They always seem to start off slow. They need some game reps and all will be good.

  • August 12, 2009  - Overseas Chief Fan says:

I agree Tyler, you can never truly know until your playing at game speed versus a new defense that doesn’t already all of the plays in the play book for god sakes. Cassel didn’t get paid for his inabilit. Look for Thigpin or G-money to go into the practice squad at the end of pre-season. Croyle is a wuss, but the second best option we have at QB.

We will rely on the defense to create opportunities, but don’t count out LJ just yet. Our O-line is much better this year, along with improved coaching.

The tough practices will force this team to want to beat the living Sh*& out of anyone that opposes them. Let the battle begin.

  • August 12, 2009  - educated says:

thigpen can’t go onto the practice squad and niether can “g-money” as they have already played on the active squad.

  • August 13, 2009  - ED says:

I’m not worried about Cassell. When the season starts he’ll be accurate. Like everyone said the defense know the plays the offense is running same thing everyday so of course the defense is a step ahead. Besides offense is more about rythem and timing. Defense is about instinct reading and reacting. Its no surprise the defense is ahead of the offense. For one most of the starters are the same guys from last year. Especially in the secondary.

The offense has alot new faces. A new quarterback that is searching for chemistry with a new host of receivers. So its going take them longer to develop that chemistry. Next year this time the offense guranteed would be ahead of the defense in training camp.

    Real Rin ® daddy-o

“One group that’s struggling on the offensive side is the quarterbacks…there is no consistency out of that position.”

    - yes & from he to whom much is given much – $63 mill – much is expected. Alas, he again fails to deliver.

The Mutt…Cassell. To wit: from the River Falls website –

“During the team’s 7- on -7 drill on field 2, QB Matt Cassel missed receiver Mark Bradley in the middle of the field. Cassel’s pass was well over the head of the 6’1” Bradley.”

    - wow…just, wow: yet another bad pass by Mutt; (cue ‘The Twilight Zone’) “no change – no change at all!”

Rin is so disappointed in him… He was expecting so much more. Right. ‘check’

RIn, I’m not sure I understand you. Clearly you’re an articulate person with some knowledge of the game. Also, you clearly have a lot of time on your hands.

Just a question for you. WHy be so excessively negative right now? OK, we get it, you liked Herm and like Thigpen. However, the team is no longer run by Herm, and the men in charge now have decided, whether you like it or not, to give Cassell a payday.

I’m not going to start an argument because you clearly love it when people get upset by you. However, I’m just curious about your motive. Are you just really bored? Or do you truly suffer from such omniscience that you KNOW that Herm would have worked out this year, and that Cassell will be a bust?

I’m assuming you’re a Chiefs fan or you likely wouldn’t be on this site. Allow me to give you a little advice (although I’m sure you will ignore it and probably insult me in the process).

Follow the Serenity Prayer. Say it to yourself every day. You may not like the direction the Chiefs are going, but there is literally nothing you can do about it. All of your complaining is remarkably similar to my son going on and on about wanting extra dessert. He knows it’s not going to change anything, he just does it to “vent” and feel heard/important.

Bottom line is, you have no more idea than the rest of us how this year will play out. Why not wait until at least a few weeks into the season to voice such consistent and repetitive complaints?

This is just a friendly suggestion. Just wait and see what happens, Rin. Then hey, of the sky falls and we are just terrible, you can have a heyday criticizing everyone and everything.

Some Guy, If you have kids, then you should know….u really need to not address him. He is whats known as a troll. no matter the sanity or logic in your argument, he will tear it apart in some weird way that only makes sense to him. Just let him be, he does this to get a rise out of you. This is how he gets his jolly’s, winning made up fights in a chat room. So, just let him be, and the rest of us can post intelligent comments. Scroll past the smileys and negativity. Most folks hear make compelling arguments.

  • August 13, 2009  - The IT Guy says:

    here*

sorry, the spelling mistakes will cost me im sure.

  • August 13, 2009  - Drew says:

Question…why does everyone spend time/post of addressing the Rin guy? I just skip over all his post, but then have to filter through the replies…annoying…

Anyways, I wonder if the offense is bad, or maybe the defense is that much improved.

Think about it, last year…Croyle was like 6 for 6 on every drive…looked like the offense was going to be great! But, once the season started, it was just a crappy defense and once the offense faced real defenses they could not hang.

I wonder, if this year, its the opposite? Maybe the defense is better, and that is why the offense is struggling? I hope so

  • August 13, 2009  - Chiefs 8-8 says:

What is the deal with Zach Thomas being on the Bike Patrol for almost a week straight? No one has mentioned him being hurt but he hasn’t practiced at all.

  • August 13, 2009  - deployed chiefs fan says:

i haven’t heard anything bout Z. Thomas either. i wonder if their going to throw him in with the first team? just a side note: Rin you can always buy Madden 10 and fir e Haley and Bring back Edwards if you like.

  • August 13, 2009  - gorillafan says:

“Question…why does everyone spend time/post of addressing the Rin guy? I just skip over all his post, but then have to filter through the replies…annoying…”

I dont know Drew, I wonder the same thing every freaking day!!!!

And I dont think that our offense will be that bad. Its just a new system, new coach, new qb and receivers, so it takes awhile to get the timing down, sometimes a long while.

  • August 13, 2009  - Herm Edwards says:

The reason Rin is so fond of me is actually my fault. We had an ill-advised tryst some months ago in a public restroom at Logan International Airport. He’s been “on my jock”, so to speak, every since.

  • August 13, 2009  - Ian says:

    Nice Herm that was rich,

anyways I am new to commenting on this site and was wondering if any of you guys have heard any good news Maurice Legget and how he is doing? thank you

    Ian

  • August 13, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    Some Guy said

    “Rin”

    - yes ‘just’ some guy…what is it now?

“I’m not sure I understand you.”

    - well talk to me, get to know me; scratch me behind the ears & rub my belly awhile…

“Clearly you’re an articulate person with some knowledge of the game.”

    - clearly… so far so good Capt’n Ob.

“Also, you clearly have a lot of time on your hands.”

    - the loveliness your eyes matched only by the brilliant hues that be the lines of every blog writes He, Rin Tin Tin … it’s a gift.

    “Just a question for you.”

    - then any old answer for you twill be, just some guy…

“WHy be so excessively negative right now?”

    - can you handle the truth? Because I can, I do & will continue to…it’s my prerogative as well be my belief – shy the satire that apparently 99% of folks herein aren’t sharp enough to discern. That be the condensed explanation. Rin can try & write a bit slower for ‘those’ 99%’s, nee Chiefs fans…

    “OK, we get it”

    - good, we’ve consensus… anything else, guy?

“you liked Herm and like Thigpen.”

    - I did? I do? You’ve married me to them via your shotgun wedding & didn’t even allow Rin to choose the best man…

“However, the team is no longer run by Herm, and the men in charge now have decided, whether you like it or not, to give Cassell a payday.”

    - did they send you personally to tell Rin? Tell them they’ll need to make an appointment with He just like every other peasant; they can all ride over in Mutt’s Lear Jet…

“I’m not going to start an argument because you clearly love it when people get upset by you.’

    - that’s a nasty unsubstantiated & rumor, monger.

“However, I’m just curious about your motive.”

    - I’m (almost) unspeakably wounded & speechless; but not quite…

    “Are you just really bored?”

    - bored? No more so than any Chiefs fan who has heard the staccato tap dance titled ‘this year it’s a gonna be a different folks’ for 40 years now… resigned more so.

“Or do you truly suffer from such omniscience that you KNOW that Herm would have worked out this year, and that Cassell will be a bust?”

    - yes…the secret mine is out.

“I’m assuming you’re a Chiefs fan or you likely wouldn’t be on this site.”

    - in this case, neither of us be an a**…

“Allow me to give you a little advice (although I’m sure you will ignore it and probably insult me in the process).”

    - well then, we’ll just pass on it since you’re double-minded regards said…

“Follow the Serenity Prayer. Say it to yourself every day. You may not like the direction the Chiefs are going, but there is literally nothing you can do about it.

“All of your complaining is remarkably similar to my son going on and on about wanting extra dessert. He knows it’s not going to change anything, he just does it to “vent” and feel heard/important.’

    - that Rin is like a son to you be remarkable… dad.

“Bottom line is, you have no more idea than the rest of us how this year will play out. Why not wait until at least a few weeks into the season to voice such consistent and repetitive complaints?”

    - Rin loves it whence they assuredly pronounce it first, then beg afore pleading yet some more… a vicious cycle to be sure.

“This is just a friendly suggestion.”

    - your son (not me the other one) told me (we talk all the time) that you told him the same thing (that was before he had to have his jaw wired shut).

“Just wait and see what happens, Rin.”

    - try me…

“Then hey, of the sky falls and we are just terrible, you can have a heyday criticizing everyone and everything.”

    - you’re so cute when you back down/go into your backpeddle…

    daddy-o

  • August 13, 2009  - Todd Haley says:

The reason no one likes me is really all my fault. I’ve turned Dwayne Bowe from an all pro WR into a third stringer due to my suspect coaching ability.

He like the others can’t catch the ball now, can’t stay on his feet, can’t remember where to line up.

I signed a four year contract but fortunately, Jr. used disappearing ink so I’ll be back on the links in no time at all.

  • August 13, 2009  - Herm Edwards says:

Todd, don’t worry! If you get canned, you can just join ESPN like I did and talk out of your a** all day-just like I do!

  • August 13, 2009  - Todd Haley says:

Herm, thanks for rectifying – but isn’t it kind of crowded in there where all the Chiefs fans live?

  • August 13, 2009  - Some Guy says:

Wow. Retired, or unemployed. And clearly single, because there’s no way someone with a wife or girlfriend would put that much time into a post.. I’ll take the advice of everyone on here and not waste any more of my time.

So for everyone else, hey, I’m Some Guy, I love the Chiefs, and I’ll be posting here from time to time.
