Camp Practice Update 8/6 P.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin and the MSP Airport

Sorry it’s taken a bit longer to get up this report … on the way to Canton for this weekend’s Hall of Fame festivities.

Well, it took a week.

But Todd Haley’s famous temper finally showed itself during the Chiefs Thursdsay afternoon practice here in the northwoods.

The victim was WR Devard Darling. Here is how it went down.

The Chiefs were working in a situation period, something that Haley is doing in every practice during camp. The goal is to have smarter players who understand how to handle different situations when they come up in a game.

In Thursday’s practice the situation was this: the offense had the ball and the lead with only a limited amount of time left in the game. The goal of the offense was to protect the ball and kill the clock. The goal of the defense was to save as much time as possible and see if they could force a turnover.

When the offense came out of the huddle, Darling lined up on the wrong side of the formation. By the time Darling was made aware of his mistake, the head coach saw the problem and was very unhappy.

“Are you kidding me!” Haley yelled. “Devard run to the building and stay there for all I care.”

Darling took off running to the UW-River Falls fieldhouse and ice arena that holds the Chiefs locker rooms.  Once he got there, he walked  inside.  Darling eventually came out of the building and took a seat in a cool tent set up next to the field and grabbed a Gatorade.

When Haley saw him sitting there he made a bee-line for the tent, yelling the whole way.

“Take it inside, take it inside,”Haley yelled. “You aren’t going to sit out here and watch. Get inside.”

Darling tried to say something, but Haley shouted him down and continued yelling at him to get out. The receiver finally turned and walked back into the building.

The head coach has been very vocal all through camp, but the tone has seldom been angry. Exasperated, unhappy, biting, but seldom angry. Not so on this day.

Afterwards the head coach didn’t have much to say about the incident.

“You all were here, you can take from what you want,” Haley said. “I’m not going to talk about it. That’s between he and I.”

Thursday’s practice ended with the team working the two-minute drill, the No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense. QB Matt Cassel took  the team down the field, but two passes thrown into the end zone were broken up by CB Brandon Flowers and SS Bernard Pollard. QB Brodie Croyle led the No. 2 offense against the No. 2 defense, but that lasted just four plays, as Croyle was zero for four, his last pass knocked down by OLB Andy Studebaker.

Other tidbits and observations:

- NFL refree Mike Carey and part of his crew are in camp, and were on the field for the practice. They will be there on Friday and Saturday as well. Haley asked them to be very picky and to throw the flag when they saw something wrong. In the two-minute drill, the Chiefs were flagged for illegal motion and one of the officials had to warn WR Dwayne Bowe about where he lined up on one play. Haley wasn’t very happy about that either.

- New QB Matt Gutierrez was on the field, but didn’t get any more snaps than the recently departed Ingle Martin was getting. He’s wearing No. 15.

- Haley again spent a lot of time with the wide receivers and tight ends as they were running routes and catching passes. Just in the individual position drills when receivers were playing against nothing but air, there were seven dropped passes on balls that were catchable.

- K Ryan Succop went three-for-four on his FGs, h itting from 34, 37 and 45 yards. He missed just left on a 42-yard FG. His first try on the 34-yarder was a May Day situation, where the field goal team had to run on the field with the game clock ticking down towards zero and get off the kick. Succop banged it through with two seconds left.

- When the Chiefs offensive line went for the pass protection-pass rush drill, LB Brian Waters once again went with the quarterbacks and receivers and snapped for them in the seven-on-seven drill. The Chiefs are giving Waters a blow from pass protection because of the ankle/foot injury he suffered several days ago in a goal line drill.

- In the pass pro-pass rush drill, TE Sean Ryan did a very good job handling rookie DE Alex Magee. Later Magee just destroyed rookie TE Jake O’Connell, who was simply overwhelmed by the rush of the Purdue Boilermaker.  Also, NT Ron Edwards continued to be a load for the inside guys on the offensive line, as he beat up on G Tavares Washington.

- Once again, ILB Zach Thomas left practice after starting with the linebackers. He did not take part in any of the team work and was not with the rehab team.

- No reason was given, but the rehab team was moved to another site on the practice fields, away from the prying eyes of the media and fans. The players working over there were LBs Monty Beisel, Wes Dacus and Demorrio Williams, S DaJuan Morgan, G Wade Smith and RB Kolby Smith.

Devard, when in doubt & is having a gran mal, remember: pay him no mind because it don’t matter – “any 22 will do”… he said so himself.

    You’re fine/see you on the 53 man…

Tyson finally signed…now lets see if he’s worth the money and the spot where he was drafted!…Go Chiefs in 09-10 nder a new regime but still Herms players!…lol

Man these receivers better get it together or it don’t matter how accurate Cassell is if receiver aren’t catching the football we’re going to have problems.

Now that he is signed, will Tyson have to pass the conditioning test before he can practice

Haley didn’t say any 22 well do . What he supposedly said I could take 22guys off the street & Winn 2 games… They way coach is working through this team mentally / physically ( That Any 22 Statement If True ) would be by far a better team than Herm had put together . “Hell hath no fury of a NFL coach (woman) scorned”.
Kind of a “raise the hair on your neck” kind of statement for those of us that have been or are married.
The Darling of Haley camp has been put on notice. I will admit though, that Haley probably should have reserved his public displeasure of Darling in a more private environment.
Haley obviously likes & has great expectations for Devard & the poor kid is self destructing for whatever reason. I would think that Haley will be spending some private one on one time with Devard before the AM. Apologizing…
Problem is, the receiving corp must be below average at best. (bad case of the dropsy’s among other infractions) I know Haley thought with proper coaching & practice that he could mold these young-uns into respectable NFL caliber players.
Haley will not be patient enough for these receivers to blossom into pros.
I’m afraid they will be cut from the team & some other club will pick them up & they will turn into pro bowl type receivers. Remember Joe Horn…
    Anyhow… Go Chiefs…

Real Rin ® daddy-o sez reply to Anonymous/the other flotsam & jetsam -

“Haley didn’t say any 22 well do . What he supposedly said I could take 22guys off the street & Winn 2 games….”

    - I’m on pins and needles waiting for explanation yours distinction one & the other (here’s a hint: there is none- be one & the same, by any measure.)
Still, Rin will leave the lights on for you…

More bad news for you Aho- er, Anon: Of the 81 players listed at present KC Chiefs.com roster, forty-four – 44 – are Herm Edwards Chiefs – or 54+% of the roster. Once the final 53 is set & the training camp bodies are pared, the % Herm men will be even greater.

Make no mistake about it – this is Herm Edwards team – Herm Edwards Chiefs – TEAM EDWARDS.

Obviously, much to s chagrin “any 22″ will NOT do. In fact & have already cut several of their OWN HANDPICKED “any 22 will do”s they signed since s&c took squat in KC.

While as expected some Chiefs here in 2008 are no longer, LB Robertson & WR Jones – both Patriots – and both & choices, DEPOSITED INTO FILE 13. TE Tony Curtis (despite a some wonderful performances in film) – TRASHCAN – another s&c’r.

So much for the Patriot Way…Ariz Cardinal too. ‘The Incredibles’ i.e., ’search’ & ‘check’ have proven they too are imminently fallible. They & their “any 22 will do” are going to have to try (much) harder to make this their team.

Rin’s guess is no less than 57% or 30 players on the 53 man will be Herm’s men- it may go as high as 70% or 37 Herm players.

The opposite end the spectrum statements of 2008 (Herm: “about 80% of the team’s already in place) and fandom’s (”all Herm’s players (100%) need to go”) thus will end advantage Herm’s take column.

So as such thence & too if the season started today, every ‘W’ in ‘09 into the Herm Edwards column, every ‘L’ courtesy ’search’ & ‘check’ – Herm’s Chiefs the raison ‘W’s the former, duo s&c’s poor management said the raison ‘L’s.

For you see, ’tis elemntary my dear Watson: via the same logic (or il) fandom used to attribute everything bad in 2008 to the auspices Herm and Carl P so too every (and Rin means ‘EVERY’) bad thing transpires in 2009 be sole responsibility of & roll:

Can’t have it otherwise nee both ways: fair is fair nee turnabout fair play…

  • August 6, 2009  - Michael says:

Darling probably would think I’m crazy for saying it, but he’s not in that bad of spot. Haley has already said he thinks Darling could be something because he has all the tools. Coach sees what he could be, and gets pissed when he sees Darling getting off track. Hopefully, the kid just keeps working and focusing, and this coach might just help him become the player he’s always wanted to be.

I wonder if it’s going to take this team, and the wideouts especially, some time to get used to the temper and shouting. Is it causing them to tighten up and drop even more balls? Obviously, they’re going to have to get used to it, and work throught it, though.

I want to know more about what the pass offense is doing. How much are they working out of the spread? Are they doing anything with wildcat type plays? Any wrinkles using Thigpen?

    Thanks for the reports, Bob.

  • August 6, 2009  - steve says:

Actually, unless Brian Waters is Rin, not a guess on my part, you do not know that exact quote, just what was reported by Jason. Even then, all he would have to do is win two, even with the same players, to be accurate.

  • August 6, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

And if does – win only 2 games that is – with the infirm- er, able help of both should be fired – right?

    Fair is play…

    Real Rin ® daddy-o, ’search’ & ‘check’ affirming…

  • August 6, 2009  - steve says:

no, if they only win six games in two years.
what is the other stat so often quoted, losing 23 out of 25 or some such.
then it would be time to make a decision.

  • August 6, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    Real Rin ® daddy-o sez -

Heh heh heh, the resolve Chiefs fandom be waning, to wit…

“no, if they only win six games in two years.”

    - ohhh… pero, “no” – au contraire mon frair, these 2 new dunderheads- er, wunderkinds have been christened Messiah incarnate- ‘the best’ available both GM & Head Coach candidates NFL.

If so (right…tee hee) they’ve no choice but to obliterate just 2 wins – toss a 10 spot in front of said and we get 12 wins … that sounds about right for all the (over) hype being bandied.

Otherwise, was no need to replace Herm & Carl.

AND – unless the wins be no less than 9 this season AND unless KC gets to the post season, first season this ‘09 will’ve failed to even equal Herm Edwards in his first season KC.

Rin loves to watch, hear & read as Chiefs fandom tries so hard to tap dance around nee obfuscate.

    heh heh heh

  • August 6, 2009  - ED says:

Jimbo have you lost your mind. Guys getting cut and going somewhere else and being pro bowelers is aobut the craziest thing i’ve ever heard. Unless we’re cutting D-Bowe no one else is Darling or Bradley are going somewhere else and becoming pro bowlers. IF you watched the Chiefs in the 90s Horn actually showed good promise his last year with the Chiefs why we traded him I don’t know.

If Darling and Bradley don’t cut it here neither guy will make it somewhere else let alone be a pro-bowler. Darling getting second chance with us after Ravens showed him the door. And Bradley still same situation after the Bears kissed him goodbye. These guys have to realize the NFL doesn’t give you many chances to prove yourself. They better get it together or not only is there career with the Chiefs going to be over, but their NFL careers will be over.

  • August 7, 2009  - Mark says:

I agree that Haley sees something special in Darling and that’s why he’s on him. If he thought there was nothing there, he wouldn’t waste the emotion. Larry Fitzgerald frequently thanks Haley for staying on his throat, and helping him become more focused, the missing ingredient in his game that Haley fixed to get him to become the #1 WR in the game. Darling is no Fitzgerald talent wise, but probably has the same laid back attitude lakadasial attitude, and Haley is trying to change that and get Darling to “be all that he can be.”

nice fake post, missed the k…

anyway…whats the news? rin thinks its herm’s team but only if they win, then its herm’s players if they lose its because haley is the coach…

    its really really flawed logic.

    but oh well.

T Jackson is finally signed, lets hope haley wasnt in a bad mood because he heard of jackson being in bad shape.

  • August 7, 2009  - steve says:

Sorry Rin, did not know my post b4 bed would generate such a response from you. By the way, why Rin Tin Tin, just wondering.
I think they will win more than 2 this year, but all they have to do is win 2 to justify his statement to Waters. The over/under I have heard is 6, sounds about right.
Being the best availabe hires, they were, does not always guarentee success, but I think they will.
I was supportive of the Herm hire when it happened, but like the preacher who drones on too much on Sunday, he lost me during on of long winded, rambling press conferences after another fourth quarter of poorly played and coached football.

  • August 7, 2009  - Johnfromfairfax says:

I was never a great fan of the yelling, screaming coach who yelled and screamed for the sake of humiliating. The differences in approach from Herm and Haley are starkly illustrated by these kinds of reports. It sounds like Darling screwed up and got sent in early and then came back out and sat in a tent drinking a gatorade. This obviously didn’t sit well with Haley and the rebuke hopefully was done with the purpose of demonstrating that errors followed by a gatorade break will not be tolerated. I suspect it’s as Bob stated, if we begin winning, players will accept it as they did with Parcells as part of his perfectionist style and psychological approach. If we lose and continue to lose it doesn’t matter. Players will tune out the message and personalize the approach. The players are millionaires and are paid to perform to a high level. They have to take some heat and realize under this coach that repeatedly making mistakes without the spotlight focusing on them will not happen. Time will tell if it works but some housecleaning is inevitable and I don’t think Haley is, or should be, working to get players to like him at this point.

Real Rin ® daddy-o sez, response to steve who said -

    “Sorry Rin”

    - don’t apologize to He that is me – you have disgraced yourself nee let an entire armada of Chiefs down via a furtive retreat last night…

“did not know my post b4 bed would generate such a response from you.”

    - Rin Tin Tin: ne’er wrong, ne’er dull, always full o’ surprises, rapier wit & panache – any other ingredients the realm your side the fray…

    “By the way”

    - over the meadows & through the woods to River Falls Camp Chiefs go (…to die from RLS.)

“why Rin Tin Tin, just wondering.”

    - cause they had one last year – this – under the contract…

“I think they will win more than 2 this year”

    - Kath was drunk/thought the gun wasn’t loaded…

    “but”

    - (drumroll)

“all they have to do is win 2 to justify his statement to Waters.”

    - if/when wins only 2 games, both Jr. as well as KC fandom (both fans – no not that one, the other one) – willst help him adjust his new co-polymer fibre neckwear.

“The over/under I have heard is 6, sounds about right.”

    - for how long now have your ears been ringing trying to tell you they are diseased – and why hath thou forsaken them? Ear witness as eye be some of the most unreliable known to man…

“Being the best availabe hires, they were, does not always guarentee success”

    - that sounds like a definite hedging of the bet there Steve-o; frauds thence their legacy, sans.

    “but I think they will.”

    - good, we’ve consensus – their KC stay willst be short… Jr. to the hopefuls lined up outside his door – NEXT!

“I was supportive of the Herm hire when it happened, but like the preacher who drones on too much on Sunday, he lost me during on of long winded, rambling press conferences after another fourth quarter of poorly played and coached football.”

    - as Rin has said many times afore, talent, time & cohesion is what wins more games than naught – and more games than coaching.

Herm received little in the way talent (gracias King Carl P), a commitment from his owner (that fell by the wayside aft but 1 year)- part&parcel those aforementioned, ‘cohesion’ is not possible sans the requisite time & talent being given.

Herm (nor Carl for that matter) were caught from behind last season on the NE 5 yard line of the long pass (no, that was our Darling, Devard); too, was not Herm et al who couldn’t punch it in for a TD with a first down – that game was the Chiefs to win, but the players laid an egg nee lost it.

Ditto for that TD pass over one of the 20 rookies (CB Leggett) against TB, when he didn’t stay with his man as coached/instead ran toward the line of scrimmage – another W ours lost by the players.

Can continue replaying the culprits deeds if you like, fact is KC had another 4-6 wins they could and should have earned – that the players didn’t be no true fault of the Head Coach Herm Edwards.

Apologist Rin? No. Realist Rin…KC fans should try some on for size.

  • August 7, 2009  - JP says:

Jimbo- I don’t think that Haley will be apologizing very soon. I doubt that is in his nature.

I completely with Johnfromfairfax…if they win it will be the best approach. However, if they lose, the message may lose its weight.

I love it…it’s like telling a kid to “go to your room.” I don’t think there is any doubt as to who is in charge.

Small kudos to Herm for his imprint on the secondary. From the latest reprorts it sounds like they are earning their keep in practice.
