Chiefs Add Nose Tackle

There’s one thing we can say for sure about G.M. Scott Pioli – if a player has spent any time with the New England Patriots  in this decade there’s a chance he’ll be wearing a Chiefs uniform by the close of business  in 2009.

With a need at nose tackle after trading Tank Tyler to Carolina, on Wednesday morning the Chiefs announced the signing of Kenny Smith.

No not the retired basketball player from North Carolina. This Kenny Smith is the 32-year old semi-retired football player out of Mississippi and the University of Alabama. Smith has not played in an NFL regular season game since the 2003 season. That’s six years off the field. Smith was with the New Orleans Saints at the time, where he was a third-round draft selection in the 2001 NFL Draft.

Smith spent 2001-20004 with New Orleans. He signed as an unrestricted free agent with Oakland in 2005, but ended up on the injured-reserve list and was released in November of that year. The 2006 season was blank for Smith, who sat out the year.

In 2007, he signed with Tampa Bay in March, but was released in April. Smith then signed with New England in June, and was released in August. He re-signed with the Patriots before the 2008 season, but ended up on injured-reserve again. The Pats released him in June ‘09.

Smith is 6-4, 303 pounds with 30 games of NFL experience.

A warm body until they can bring in “their” guy next year.

    Completely and thoroughly unimpressive.

Hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2003? And this was the best guy available? Wow.

ummmmm yay?? maybe hes like a hidden gem and scott pioli knows this guy is just gonna tear some heads off

This looks like the bottom of the bottom. I doubt he is in any form of condition to step on the field. Hey, uncuffed, how do you know he has even a warm body. Maybe he passed away (since he has not played in YEARS) and this is some kind of scam to get pay check. Is there a older guy not on a roster the Chiefs could find, not one DT on a practice squad .

The more I see, the more I doubt Pioli has what it takes.

Just found a replacement to ease the role of RB from LJ. We all know we need a better running game. Well I got the guy who could pound the rock even without a strong OL. Bronco Nagurski. And best of all, he will be cheap because he is dead. Then the Chiefs can tell us about patience and the process while they look for next year.

Very unimpressive…scratch your head news. Will this guy even make it on the field? Maybe if I had contacted them they could have signed me. I didn’t realise just anybody would do.

lol el cid, I agree that would be a good deal and at least I know that the chiefs (Pioli/Haley) are trying…

Has ESPN broke this news yet??

There obviously aren’t any nose tackles out there, that’s why Carolina traded for Tank. We also picked up DT Favorite, from LSU, for the practice squad. If he does ok and picks up the system, I bet he’ll replace Smith.

  • October 21, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Seems like there might have been an undrafted NT somewhere, or somebody on a practice squad…I don’t know. Somebody that’s stepped on the field in the last 5 years or so, maybe?

  • October 21, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

We all need to remember how rare true NT’s are right now. The number of 3-4 teams in the league has what, tripled(?), in the last few years? There are no experienced bodies out there. This was a guy who is familiar with our general system and will be a placeholder until we get someone else up to speed.

Favorite must be a better option. I know he’s yet ANOTHER LSU DL that can’t rush the passer, but Smith seems like a used up injury risk with not very much experience. I’m unimpressed but I hope to be wrong on this one.

  • October 21, 2009  - ThunderChief says:

A guy that’s SIX, count ‘em, 6 years out of the league????? What does Pioli know that flies in the face of the other teams in the NFL? Most guys even TWO years out of the league (VICK?) are suspect given their timing, conditioning and overall physical skills.

I’m absolutely non-plussed on this signing. If K Smith makes ANY kind of meaningful contribution in terms of multiple tackes/game or a sack here and there, I’ll call Pioli a genius. Otherwise? You tell me.

  • October 21, 2009  - el cid says:

Gee, uncuffed, I guess because the Chiefs are trying the 3-4 means we do not need players who can compete after all the rest of the NFL needs player also. You are correct that is not much out there but to keep dipping our wick in the NE pool makes Pioli look like he REALLY knows nothing about the rest of the league. Selecting Smith looks like an incompetent move by an incompetent GM, nothing else.

Hmm… Im sure glad they got rid of King Carl and Herm, the losing has stopped… LOL

well anyway, it’s funny that a team that needs a NT trades for ours thats sitting on the bench, but at the same time the chiefs need a NT so instead of keeping the NT that apparently can play in the NFL, they go out and get a guy that hasn’t played since 2003, very smart move at least they got a 5th round pick while downgrading this year. Maybe next year they will use that pick on a TE that can’t get on to the field.

  • October 21, 2009  - Steve says:

I thought Carolina needed a 4-3 def tackle, not a 3-4 nose tackle, there is a differance. NT’s are a rare breed, there are none out there in the middle of the season. Where do you think they were going to get one? If this guy can come in and play a hand full of snaps, all that Tank was doing, he will have served his purpose as a stop gap.
