College Free Agent Update

The Chiefs finally released their 12-man list of undrafted rookie free agents that they’ve signed to contracts.

We’ve had most of the names before.  But there were three first time additions to the official list:

TE Tom Crabtree, Miami of Ohio.  He’s 6-5, 244 pounds and in 48 games for the Redhawks he caught 40 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns.  He’s an Ohio native.

G Darryl  Harris, Mississippi.  He’s 6-4, 300 pounds and played in 35 games with 222 starts at Ole Miss.  He played center, and left and right tackle.  He’s a Mississippi native.

LB Corey Smith, Cincinnati. He’s 6-1, 225 pounds and played in 48 games with 46 starts for the Bearcats.  He had 271 total tackles, with 7.5 sacks and three INTs.  He’s out of New Jersey.

They join DL Dion Gales and Robert Greenwood, CBs Jackie Bates and Londen Fryar, LBs Javon Belcher and Pierre Walters, S Ricky Price, WR Taurus Johnson, OL Cameron Goldberg.

First practice of rookie mini-camp is Friday morning.

What happened to LB Bobby Abare of Yale? Released already?

Not on the Chiefs roster, though he was referenced as having been signed on other websites… this is indeed daunting; I’ve just been insufferable since former Saint QB & Abare name rhymer (Bobby) Hebert retired.

Given player heights and weights always make me chuckle. It isn’t a matter of national security but candor…and comedy.

Michael Crabtree got so stressed by the thot of the NFL draft that he lost 1 1/2 inches between the end of the ‘08 college season & the combine, dropping from 6′3 to 6′1 and change.

From Brodie Croyle, supposedly 6′2/206 lbs (wink) to one of the newest Chiefs, a free agent DE & DT named Dion Gales (just mentioned here at random), who do they - these teams any/all - think they’re fooling?

I’ve now seen Gales listed variously on different websites as short as 6′4 and as tall as 6′6 - his weight as low as 259 to as high as 285 lbs. He’s to small for either DT or DE likely, if Hali and McBride are considered too light in the pants at 275-290 (wink) or thereabouts…maybe Gales runs like a deer - Bambi, not John.

I remember when Tamba Hali was drafted by KC the statement was made that “he could play inside on passing downs - he’s weighed as much as 286 lbs.”
I doubt Hali has ever weighed 286 in his life and I have trouble believing that he weighed even 275 as listed in 2008.

Former Chiefs OT of the 1960s/early 70s Dave Hill was listed at 260 lbs. for most of his career but (especially nearer the end his career) was about 300.

The funniest one I recall was Hank Stram trying to ’stretch’ KR Noland ‘Supergnat’ Smith ‘up to size.’ Listed 5′8 163 lbs. when drafted, Noland was in fact about 5′6 1/2 & 154 lbs.

I tolerate the subterfuge in the same way I do watching GM ’searchme’ and HC ‘checkpoint’ via their bunker mentality - with aching sides.

Pioli and Haley must have really liked Miami Ohio’s use of TEs. Not only did they make a trade to make sure they got to draft Jake O’Connell, but they also turn around and sign his teammate Tom Crabtree. May not be the most exciting pass catching prospect named Crabtree this year, but at least we got one!

Fryar has the bloodlines and I like his attitude on display in Bob’s Friday Morning Cup O’Chiefs. I can see this kid sticking in the league. He’s played against some good college QBs. Western, Eastern, AND Central Michigan all have QBs who are expected to be drafted next year. Also, I’ve seen Pierre Walters name on numerous “best undrafted players” lists.

Hopefully among all these kids, there’s a gem who can help the team this year. Getting a Maurice Leggett or a Rudy Niswanger once in a while is a nice bonus.

Sounds like the kind of player Pioli and Haley have been talking about, versatility TE,FB,LB and ST….
