Day No. 5 Free Agency Update

This time of year can be tough on players as they are cut loose by teams, or must sit down and decide where they want to move their family if they are going to continue their careers.

Sometimes the emotions get the best of them. Take now former Cleveland QB Derek Anderson.

Speaking via e-mail to a Cleveland area paper, Anderson did not hide his feelings about being released on Tuesday by the Browns.

“The fans are ruthless and don’t deserve a winner,” Anderson wrote when asked for a reaction to being released. “I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured. I know at times I wasn’t great. I hope and pray I’m playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them.”

Anderson was released less than 24 hours after the Browns consummated a trade that brought QB Seneca Wallace to Cleveland for a ‘11 draft choice.

The signing action has slowed in the first week of free agency. The Denver Broncos made the only splash on Tuesday with the dual signings of DE Jarvis Green from the Patriots and NT Jamal Williams from the Chargers. Along with Justin Bannan who was signed late last week, it provides a complete makeover of the team’s defensive line.

Here’s what went down on Day No. 5:

  • BEARS – released RB Kevin Jones.
  • BRONCOS – signed UFA DE Jarvis Green (Patriots) to a 4-year, $20 million deal with a $7.5 million payout in the first two years; signed NT Jamal Williams (Chargers) to 3-year, $16 million deal that could max out at $22 million, with $7 million guaranteed.
  • BROWNS – released QB Derek Anderson.
  • CARDINALS – re-signed S Matt Ware.
  • CHIEFS – signed RB Thomas Jones (Jets) to a 2-year, $5 million contract.
  • COLTS – claimed DT J.D. Skolnitsky on waivers.
  • DOLPHINS – re-signed DT Jason Ferguson.
  • GIANTS – signed QB Jim Sorgi (Colts).
  • PACKERS – RFA S Nick Collins signed his tender offer for $3.3 million; signed WR Charles Dillon.
  • PATRIOTS – re-signed CB Leigh Bodden to a 5-year, $28.5 million contract with $10 million in guaranteed money.
  • SAINTS – re-signed CB Leigh Torrence.
  • TITANS – signed LB Will Witherspoon (Eagles) to a 3-year contract.
  • VIKINGS – re-signed CB Benny Sapp.

The Broncos are such a shoddy organization. I would have liked to see either Jarvis Green or Jamal Williams in a Chiefs jersey but they shelled out 14.5 mil in guaranteed money on those guys?! Talk about OVER PAYING! We may not be spending enough, but at least we aren’t making bone headed deals like those!!!

I love the honesty from Derek Anderson. No player should ever be booed when he suffers an injury. Denver SEVERELY overpaid for Jarvis Green, and we might have also, if we didn’t draft Magee, so good job Pioli.

Anderson’s comments show a lack of class. Even if Browns fans showed the same…you don’t answer lack of class with lack of class. Those comments may come back to bite him in the ass, when he’s looking for another job. He would have been a lot better off just biting his tongue and thanking the organization…even if he didn’t mean it. And if he thinks he’s going to go start somewhere else? I don’t know where it would be.

Agreed Mad Chief. Attitude = opportunity & he reduced himself. Anderson’s best hope will be as a back up & probably with a team that is going nowhere.
Then again, sometimes a change of environment does wonders for some players.

It isn’t a bone headed deal until it doesn’t work out. I could end up being a brilliant move. Unless Colby has a crystal ball that we don’t know about.

Hmm, I think Derrick Andersons comments are justified, regretable, but justified. The Browns fans were in such a hurry to get Quinn on the field, to see what he had, which apparently isn’t much if not worse then Anderson, but I’m sure Wallace will make a big difference there.

Jarvis Green would have been a nice addition to the Chiefs, I can’t say the same about Jamaal Williams though. I dont see him having a very productive season, like I have said before the chiefs should never sign another lineman that the chargers have dropped because they normally are done when that happens..

Jammal Williams was 34 and that is old on the line. But we could have used some infusion there at that spot. I don’t agree with what the Bronco’s paid for him and Green are they turning into the Raiders over there?

I thought you realized all ready that I do in fact have a pretty bad ass crystal ball when it comes to these things. In the case of Jamal Williams’ ruined knees and Jarvis Green’s career production (solid role player and backup) I don’t need it. They were both paid twice the amount they are worth. If they prove worth the money then Denver will be extremely fortunate. Overpaying is a bad idea most of the time.
