Day No. 6 Free Agent Update

T.O. is still looking for a new football home. Antonio Bryant is not.

Both receivers were in Cincinnati this week. Bryant got a contract, Owens did not. Whether any of that makes Chad Ochocinco happy, we’ll have to check on Tweeter to find out.

“I’m happy we have my friend Antonio Bryant, but I’m hurt at the same time,” he wrote from Los Angeles where he’s practicing for his upcoming appearance on Dancing With The Stars. “It would have been great teaming up with 1 of the best.”

Bryant signed a four-year, $28 million deal, a contract similar to the one the Bengals gave last year to UFA WR Laveranues Coles who was a disappointment during the ‘09 season.

As for Owens, he tweeted what might have been.

“I’m en route back 2 LA imagining wht WE could hv done 2gether!! Holy delta skymiles Robin! U talk about unstoppable!!” is what he posted.

Here’s what else went down on Wednesday, as free agency pushed towards the end of its first week:

  • BEARS – signed FB/TE Eddie Williams (Redskins).
  • BENGALS – signed UFA WR Antonio Bryant (Buccaneers); re-signed TE Dan Coats.
  • BRONCOS – released G Mitch Erickson and DE Kenny Peterson.
  • CARDINALS – re-signed TE Anthony Becht, TE Stephen Spach and DE Jeremy Clark.
  • EAGLES – signed UFA CB Marlin Jackson (Colts).
  • PATRIOTS – re-signed RB Kevin Faulk.
  • RAMS – re-signed TE Daniel Fells.
  • RAVENS – re-signed WR Derrick Mason.
  • REDSKINS – signed DT Ma’ake Kemoeatu (Panthers) to a 2-year, $7 million contract.
  • SEAHAWKS – K Olindo Mare signed his franchise player tender offer for $2.8 million.
  • TEXANS – signed UFA OL Wade Smith (Chiefs) to a 4-year, $12 million contract with $6.25 million in guaranteed money.

That sucks! Punt Hunt and Pocket Change Pioli impressive again!

Smith should have been paid, he was the best Center on the team and damn close to being the best Guard.

Now we’ll get all the apologist responding with lame excuses or a denial of Smiths value to the team…. Release The Hounds!

$6.25 million in guaranteed money, WOW! your kidding me….haaha Texans you’re a bunch of suckers for our OLine scrubs.

I wonder how Jordan Black worked out for them?

Wade was supposidly welcomed to resign with the Chiefs, but after that offer he would be dumb to reject it.

Why does Houston have a HARD ON for our players? 10-38 the past 3years must turn them on?

Cute name calling John…are you 8 yrs. old? Grow up.

  • March 11, 2010  - el cid says:

I think the point is, John, Wade will have to be replaced. While not a starter, he has been a backup at two positions, remember we carried 4 TEs so you need others to carry more of the load. Now the Chiefs will have to look at free agency for another player, a multi position OL. Not a whole lot of them out there. Will Wade be missed, probably. Can he be replaced, sure. Did he need to be let wander, probably not, at least until they had a 80 man roster to chose from. So Mr Pioli returns to form, one move you never dreamed of, no moves, two decent moves, and back to “what?”.

I’m with aPacificChief on this one. Wade Smith was given many opportunities to make an impact and WIN a job…and failed. I wish him the best of luck with the Texans. Maybe Kubiak can make a star out of him like he did Pollard. haha

  • March 11, 2010  - el cid says:

Smith was no star or starter BUT he could fill in at guard and center AND not embarrass himself doing it. That was his value. There will be other who can do that but no body on the current roster can…..so…..two roster spots will be needed to fill his loss.

If we can happen to land Lilga, I don’t think we will miss Smith at all. I don’t know what he is asking but I don’t think it would be too much more than Smith got from Houston. I wish Smith the best in Houston, but I think they overpaid for a backup.

  • March 11, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Smith will need to be replaced, yes. He was a versatile player, yes. He was worth the contract he got from Houston, ummm…no. Not to us. No way can you pay that kind of money to a back-up O-lineman. As Josh pointed out, Smith has had plenty of time to establish himself as a starter…and hasn’t been able to do it. Even on our piss-poor line.

But I say, good for Smith. He got a big money contract…and I’m assuming he’ll get to start. He was a decent player for us, so I hope he does well down there.

  • March 11, 2010  - SG says:

Losing your best utility infielder usually hurts – so let’s not ignore the true value Smith had to the team. Right now, our team’s #1 problem area going into the offseason has become even more of a problem.

  • March 11, 2010  - SG says:

“He was worth the contract he got from Houston, ummm…no. Not to us.”

Front-loading a deal would have made good sense – and possibly shorter-term contract. It’s a moot point I guess, he’s gone. I don’t feel as if the “he wasn’t worth it” arguments can be considered as compelling in a year where there is no salary cap. One thing is for sure, we have lost “depth” on this line, meaning if we get Lilja and he gets hurt, Big Wade won’t be there to fill in.

  • March 11, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

It may not have been a matter of money at all, really. He likely wanted to start, and Houston probably told him he would. That’s my guess, anyway.

  • March 11, 2010  - SG says:

    “That’s my guess, anyway.”

Strong guess. So do we have anything in FA to fill in this new hole – or do we draft someone else?

  • March 11, 2010  - el cid says:

In my opinion, Poili remains a mystery on how he view the Chiefs and how he plans to get a better product. Got to like a the two signings. Got to dislike Boldin failure, Palko, and Wade Smith deals. New WR is a toss up, need to give Haley a chance with guys he knows, sort of like Crennel and NT deal. Do not know what they are looking for in free agency (actually did a whole lot more than I expected). But it seems we still do not a enough on the roster to stand pat and let draft picks and college free agents cover the missing parts. Now is the real crunch time for Pioli. He is going to have to find guys who can START and that will not be easy, not an enviable job.

  • March 11, 2010  - arrowhead1978 says:

I dont think Kubiak made Pollard a star, honestly I think Pollard was a good safety, yes he did miss a tackle here and there, but he definately helped out KC against the run and he still had a lot tackles while he was here. He was and still is better then Brown, who apparently can’t tackle and missed his fair share of plays.

    SG says:

My guess would be both. We need a Center, badly. And maybe Brown will turn into something this year? But I agree with el cid…Pioli is tough to figure out. It’s hard to know what he might be thinking.

Sean Ryan signed with the Redskins. Anybody pissed about that?

  • March 11, 2010  - el cid says:

Heck, Mad Chief, don’t we still have 3 TEs on the roster and tons of fans want some college TE drafted, Hernandez??. Ryan is a dime a dozen player.

  • March 11, 2010  - SG says:

    “Anybody pissed about that?”

    Heartbroken…lol…

Losing Sean Ryan does’nt break my heart, that’s for sure.

Yeah…Pope, Cottom, and O’Connell. None of which have shown a whole lot, in terms of establishing themselves as a solid starter. Hopefully, one (or all) of them can step it up this year. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pioli draft a TE, either. Just because…the guy has proven pretty unpredictable.

And yes, Ryan was basically another Goff. Both looked okay for a couple of games…then spun circles on their way down the toilet.

  • March 11, 2010  - el cid says:

Not sure “unpredictable” is the right word for Pioli. More like “uncommunicative” with fans. Palko and Urban might qualify as unpredictable because I didn not consider them an important, necessary addition. but the two good one RB and NT, they were exactly what we needed and probably the best of what was available. Just cutting hairs but Pioli still needs to prove himself to me, getting there but not yet.

  • March 11, 2010  - Danny W says:

Wade Smith was a whole ton better than Indukwe or however you spell it the guy was horrible and the Chiefs paid him. Allemen and Smith were decent lineman and know are gone. We cant afford another year of ooops I thought the line was going to be okay.We have not had depth at the oline position in five years and then check hour win loss ratio, I bet you will see some things add up. No line you cant run. No line you cant pass. Those lead to defense on the field for 45 minutes a game just like 90 percent of all 16 games last year we had a tired defense. Like the Shaun Smith pick up he can eat some blocks still think we need more depth at Nose Tackle though.
