OTA Update 6/16

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs organized off-season worked ended Tuesday, as head coach Todd Haley put his team through a conditioning test and then dismissed them until July 30th when they head to training camp in Wisconsin.

There were two more OTA sessions scheduled for Wednesdsay and Thursday, but Haley was pleased with the progress and work that his players had gotten done in the last three months.  He and his coaching staff decided to allow an early exit for the team.

“This wasn’t pre-meditated,” said Haley, the guy who is supposed to be so mean and nasty to players. “We made a lot of progress overall … we’ve come a long way in strength and conditioning and I think we’ve come a long way schematically and guys understanding what they have to do.

“We as a staff felt like it was the right thing to do for the guys.”

The conditioning test has the players run 50 yards three consecutive times, then a one-minute break, then 50 yards three more times, a one-minute break, and then 50 yards three more times. The little guys like defensive backs and wide receivers have to run under 55 seconds. The running backs, tight ends, quarterbacks, linebackers have to do it in 58 seconds and the big boys on the offensive and defensive line get 62 seconds.

They will have to pass it again on the first day of training camp before they are able to practice.

“It’s like an albatross hanging over them for the next month,” Haley said. “Training camp is hot, we need these guys in shape.”

Haley indicated the large majority of players passed the test, something they were not able to do back at the start of the team’s strength and conditioning program.   He said all but one of the rookies on the roster passed the test, including CB Donald Washington who has been with the team just two days.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but from where we started to where we are at right now, I think the guys really worked hard every day and we had such good attendance, it was worth throwing them a bone and let them get out of here,” said Haley.

Haley and his staff were concerned that another handful of practices would not bring more progress at this time.

“Was it going to start to be diminishing returns,” Haley said. “These guys started early, they’ve been working really hard and I just thought it was worth the sacrifice.”

The rookies will spend the next 10 days or so around the facility working with the strength and conditioning staff and also some assistant coaches will work with them.  There’s a handful of veterans that will be there as well.

For the others, it was heading home for vacation, or simply changing their location for workouts. The coaching staff itself will soon take a holiday.

Well, I hope the coaches are seeing as much improvement as we fans are dreaming about seeing. If that is the case, then I guess the early break is deserved and a little more opptimism goes into my tank.

And now we head into the “dead zone” for news of our team. It’s gonna’ be a long 6-plus weeks. Next time they all get together for training camp…it’ll be for REAL.

I hope these guys that have worked so hard to get into shape, don’t blow it between now and then.

What sort of test is this?? i’m not in that good shape but i work harder when i warm up!! no wonder they can’t cut it in the 4th quarter

I agree. You know – this team defense reminds me of a college football defensive coordinator a few years ago that spoke to a group I got to be with. Paraphrasing him: “This is a young group of guys we have. They’re a real fast group of guys…they may not know exactly where they’re supposed to go – but they’ll get there real fast!”

Our team may not have the talent or knowledge of the system needed to make a playoff run this year – but it’ll definitely be able to run…

    Peter,

    you go try it!!

Its just a test, with a million others that they have to do. I wouldnt put much into it.

Besides you can thank player friendly, no practice, HERM about the 4th quater problems last year, dude.

Yeah that conditioning test is seriously weak. I wonder if that was a typo because I ran that same exact drill in soccer in HIGH SCHOOL and we had to do it under a min. You would think professional athletes would be held to a higher standard than high school freshman…

  • June 16, 2009  - JimmeDK says:

I agree with Peter here, something is off with those numbers. Anyone can run 150 yards in 55 seconds, or 450 yards in 165 seconds for that matter. 150 yards is 137 meters and the world record 200 meter is around 20 seconds and the Kansas City Chiefs has 55 seconds to run less? Nah, there has to be some kind of mistake.

Now let’s get the draft choices signed! Let’s hope the agents understand that getting their guy in camp on time might be more important than a few extra bucks! (Of course, it’s rarely a “few” extra bucks) Let’s just get them all to camp! I believe that’s on Pioli as Denny Thum is out of the picture(but not too far away). Sounds like there could be a reason for optimism for the upcoming season.

  • June 16, 2009  - alex k says:

well, Haley gave them time off, but what is overlooked is the way he went about it.

Haley challenged his players to stay at their weight, to stay in shape, and I expect a few cuts come August when a few didnt keep up their end of the bargain.

There is just SO much time off between now and camp, it worries me for a team that had to lose 338 Lb’s to get in shape…with a bunch of excuses of eating home cooking…im sorry, ive seen the guys who went at it EVERY DAY in the workout room next to me(LT, and the guy who didnt, and came in overweight despite talent, Jesse Chapman, and yes, Maurice Clarett(who refused to do certain warm ups because he didnt want to waste his time)

Albert better be at weight, DJ better be in shape, Cox no more of that cooking…

We will learn a lot about this team in the next few months.

  • June 16, 2009  - colby says:

It sounds like they run 50, stop, turn around, run 50, stop, turn around, and run 50. With all the stopping and turning involved, that would slow you down a lot. It’s not just run 150 yards in this amount of time. Plus, they have to do three sets in a row. The first set may be easy, the second set may not be bad either, but you’ll feel it on the third one.

Not necessarily boot camp, but not a walk in the park either guys. Let’s see any of you run this drill with a 65 second time limit. I’m betting most of you couldn’t.

  • June 16, 2009  - Smolder009 says:

oh, ffs! can no one add? it’s NINE sets of 50 – 450yds, not 150.

  • June 16, 2009  - Shoe says:

Those who think this is easy should try it.

And try it after an otherwise complete 60 to 90 minute workout.

What football teams term a light conditioning workout would put a large percentage of the population out of commission for about three days.

Obviously the coaches are watching and they have stopwatches. Those who are loafing are going to be noticed by their teammates and coaches.

  • June 16, 2009  - Rip 'em a new one says:

Old NBA coach Jack Ramsey had a somewhat similar test for his players on the day they reported to training camp. I can’t remember all the details but it required them all to do a 2 mile run.

The small guys under 210 lbs had to run it under 12 minutes

Medium guys under 230 lbs had to do it under 12.5 minutues

The big guys over 230lbs had to run it under 13 minutes.

Their times told Ramsey the shape each group was in and what their additional conditioning workload would be. This Haley test, while similar, seems a little easier but I could be wrong.

  • June 16, 2009  - B in SC says:

Agree with Smolder. Running a 7 second 50 translates into 52.5 minutes for the total of 9 sprints. Try running your 9th 50 yard sprint in 7 seconds sometime. Make sure you run it outside in the heat as well.

So, KC’s golfing coach lets the players skate and cancels 2 OTA’s. Yup, it’s going to be one bogey of a season 2009 in KC. FORE! (If this was Nam, a fragging wouldst be the operative noun, result.)

That the players grew tired of ‘check’ this soon of course does ‘not’ bode well upcoming training camp. Conclusion – ‘check’s already lost players respect & is backpedaling furiously in an attempt to buy some time/rethink his found wanting plans.

Get that golf resume in order ‘check’…

  • June 16, 2009  - tm1946 says:

  • June 16, 2009  - alex k says:

golf resume eh? where were YOU during the super bowl? and where was Todd Haley? Right.

2 days off now means little, when camp isnt till the end of july…thats a LOT of time, 2 days? they already took extra time having the option with a first year coach, so technically, its pretty even to the rest of the NFL, except we lost 338 lbs.

  • June 16, 2009  - Skrappy says:

I bet most of the people would have a hard time running a 6 second 40 yard dash, now add 10 yards and do Nine of them. That is not easy at all…

They are only adding up the times from the 50 yard dash each time with the 1 minute break in between.

Talk about a real Lung Burner!

  • June 16, 2009  - Kevin B says:

Sprints are not like running but if you compare, that is like running a 1/4 of a mile in 3 minutes and 15 seconds. A lot of guys at my old high school could run a 5 minute mile all day long. They may not have been sprinting but at 3 minutes they would have been well past a half mile.

  • June 16, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

This is how I read it. The players run a 50 yd dash, that dash is timed. They turn around (the turn around time is not timed Colby) and run another one, they turn around and run another one. They rest one minute and then they start over. 55 seconds (DB’s time) divided by 9 sprints is equal to 6.11 seconds per 50 yd sprint.

Now lets assume the DBs can run on average a 4.5 sec. 40 yd sprint (that is an all out sprint) 4.5 sec. times 9 sprints equals 40.5 seconds. That is a difference of 14.5 seconds. That is a 1.6 sec. cushion per sprint. Now add 10 yds to each sprint and that is basically 9 all out 50 yd sprints in 2.9 minutes without losing any time off your sprint time. That sounds impossible for even the most elite of athletes.

  • June 16, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

Just thought I would add: I would be willing to bet that not many of us posting here could run 50 yds in 6.11 seconds ever, let alone 9 consecutive times.

    - yes, what is it now?

    “what unit were you in?”

    - 1st Force Recon Company when I arrived in 1966; the where, what, who, when, how & whys after that transpired will remain privileged.

It definitely wasn’t Pendelton but instead places like Dong Ha, Hue and Phu among other both within & without where Rin spent his long days- and even longer nights…

“They way you tell it the first time, 1st recon. “black ops” you must watch a lot of movies.”

    - both real life kind in blood red & guts as well the television and movie kind you reference… in fact Rin was interviewed on a Vietnam DVD dealing with the war. The title? That would result in my anonymity being lost if I said much more – I will not as anonymity is something I cherish. You will just have to keep wondering and wandering…which is you’re good at (you probably learned that over at Pendelton ‘during the war’…huh.)

“Usually the unit is a little more complicated the that.”

    - no, units are not complicated…ever. Rather, only incompetent people who never got the hang feel that way; I can sense the rope hesitation marks about your neck from here.

“I bet you were either in Canada or you scored a 4F on your entrance.”

    - never been north of the border; if you had been old enough (or not 4F yourself) you’d have likely been the first one across the border when Rin was shipping out to serve his country late 1960’s…

“Personally I hate those who try to fake it by pretending to be what they are not.”

    - Rin discovered long ago that folks who talk the most about their military experiences usually are the ones who never served in war time…like you. I can say this because I did serve during the war – right smack dab in the middle of it and various medals & ribbons did I earn, for the record. They too shall remain within my memory.

“I am a Marine until I die and was active duty from 1976 till 1982 HMA 169 3rd MAW Camp Pendleton CA.”

    - wow Pendelton huh…Hah-hah (not to be confused with Ooh-rah!) California is alot closer to home than Nam where Rin served – you probably ’served’ in Special Services; lemme guess…recreation.

“Here is a test for you Rin… best of LUCK to you.”

    - here’s a test for you, simple questions because I cannot & will not detail matters more specific to what Rin in particular was a part of. If you can’t answer these softball q’s, don’t waste my time further:

    * Describe a typical reconnaissance patrol in Vietnam – and a not so typical.

    * describe the protocol for each the following: STARLIGHT, BIRDWATCHER, DOUBLE EAGLE, HASTINGS, PRAIRIE, HUE CITY, HOUSTON, TAYLOR COMMON, and MUSKOGEE MEADOW.

    * What notable occurrence happened on 4/28/1968 in Gia Dinh?

    * What does July 21, 1970 and pro football have in common?

Good night Chesty, wherever you are…

Rin likes to talk about nothing…he’s the Seinfeld of this blog, only no where near as entertaining.

“What players on the roster have the best chance to help “check” save face and help “Search” not search for work after this coming season?”

    - any 22 according to ‘check’. One thing to watch for is how many of Herm’s players make the final 53 roster and any others on IR, DV lists etc.

If ‘check’ and his any 22 is legitmate & not more than lip service his – and I believe that ‘check’ is nothing but lip service – he will field a team of NO former Edwards players.

Edwards said about 80% of the team was already in place end last season. Taking into consideration that a new regime will bring new schemes, ideas & players, that 80% becomes a bit moot. Still, 80% of 53 would be about 42 players. So let’s see how many Herm Chiefs remain. Rin suggests that there will be about that many or 42/80%, certainly not much less than that at worst.

This will affirm Herm was correct & that ‘check’ knows it to be the case. It will also cause the Herm denigration club further angst . . . sweet!

So, as ‘check’ is more flip than legit, let us see how many any 22’s he find among Herm’s men. And as Rin has said afore any victories in 2009 will be Herm’s/his player…any/all losses will be ‘check’s.’

Specific players? Who can say at this juncture. Guesses? Many. I see team cohesion more than a player or several as the hoped for result.

Schottenheimer had strong ‘teams’ that lacked at QB as well suffered at his/his offensive CO-ORDs trembling hands the playoffs.

Circa 2009 KC still has no more than journeyman level talent at QB…as always, the QB position makes a team.

The first 14 Superbowl winners had Hall of Fame QBs; the exceptions since have been few… odds are until Kaycee has one of the HOFrs in tow we will not win big again.

Too, a HOF Coach is preferable; alas, the only way ‘check’ will ever get into the Hall is via normal business hours (and he’d better make an appointment just to be safe.)
