Camp Practice Update 8/10 A.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

It was a mentally grinding practice for the Chiefs on Monday morning. Todd Haley put them through two hours plus of work and most of it dealt with special teams and situations.

The morning proved frustrating for the head coach.

“I want a mentally and physically tough team that is smart,” Haley said. “Specifically, situationally smart. The game these days is all situations. You are either coming out, you are in the red zone, you are in short yardage, you are in goal line, it’s end of the half, end of the game. The game is made up of a lot of situations and in order to be a smart team you have to know what’s going on. You have to understand the situations and you almost have to do it without coaches.

“Today was a lot less coaching to see what they know. There were a handful of them (players) who it was clear to me had not studied and stayed up on the situations. So yeah, I was upset about that.”

Haley’s verbal hammer fell on not only players but special teams coach Steve Hoffman. The head coach was especially upset when the team had what they call a “May Day” situation on a field goal. That’s where the game clock is running and the FG team has only seconds to line up and get off a kick. Haley explained the situation to the whole team,

But when it came time to kick, long snapper Tanner Purdum did not run on the field.

“I’d say that’s a problem,” Haley said afterwards. We won’t repeat what he said on the field because this is a family website.

Earlier, the Chiefs offense was in a situation where the clock was winding down and they needed a TD to win. They set up a hook and ladder type play, where a receiver catches the ball and then hands off to another receiver. Only the first time the offense ran the play, rookie RB Javarris Williams tried to hand off but WR Mark Bradley didn’t run the play and wasn’t there to take the handoff.

It was that kind of morning in the northwoods. Here’s more of what went down:

– Not working in the session were eight players: S DaJuan Morgan, LBs Zach Thomas, Demorrio Williams and Monty Beisel, RBs Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith and Gs Wade Smith and Tavares Washington.

– In position drills the wide receivers were beaten up; staff members held pads and when the receiver was about to catch the ball, he was hit with these pads, sometimes two back-to-back, or high and low. It was a struggle for most of the WRs to hold onto the ball. Rookie Quinten Lawrence had the most problems, as several times he had alligator arms and didn’t fully reach for the pass because he knew he was about to get hit. Veterans Bobby Engram and Mark Bradley had troubles as well. Dwayne Bowe and Amani Toomer were the receivers who dropped the fewest passes while being smashed.

– Two ends of the veterans spectrum: OLB Mike Vrabel was talking and communicating all through a snap in a blitz period. Even as the ball was snapped, he was directing traffic. RG Mike Goff jumped early in the blitz  period and had to take a penalty run.

– Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and QB Matt Cassel had a long one-on-one conversation at the end of practice, and then they gathered up Lawrence and went back on the field and worked on several passing plays. Bradley eventually joined the group as well.

– Rookie DL Tyson Jackson and Alex Magee  put in extra time after practice working against a one-man sled with D-Line coach Tim Krumrie.

THE ABOVE would seem to suggest that Haley has been studying some of the concepts of Sun Tsu’s Art of War who is quoted:

“Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent’s fate. ”

    And this:

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

Haley, like Sun Tzu, is stressing the mental importance of victory which is a more telling factor than the physical effort exerted. The large question being asked and answered is the degree of mental capacity this team and individuals on it, possess. THAT could be the telling factor as to who makes it and who gets sent on down the road.

    Yikes Bob!
This practice sounds like a “Murphy’s law” kind of practice. Haley is probably spitting nails about now.
There is alot of information & studying plays for this team to absorb & remember. I’m sure the rookies are having a tougher time than the vets.
Tanner has no excuse, I’m sure he will be in Haleys dog house for a while.
Anyhow, just another fiasco practice exposing things the team needs to work on. They must get better. Go Chiefs.

    - as every rehearsal Chiefs – more so chronic than acute – CODE SACRE BLUE!

Ladies & gentlemen, your not ready for prime time 2009 Kansas City Chiefs… or, to paraphrase with a nod toward Ernest Lawrence Thayer:

    “Oh! somewhere in this football land the coach’s smile beams wide;
A team is jelling somewhere, winning season draws nigh.
    And somewhere throws be on the mark, receivers latch on every;
But there is no joy in River Falls — “any 22″ won’t do as ‘check’ does daily find out.”

    Rin told ya so…

    - – - – -

Is DuJuan Morgan myth, legend or Waldo? He is not alone in his stealthiness, for, some of the other ‘usual’ suspects too obvious via their absence –

    D. Williams, Beisel & this year’s winner of the Donnie Edwards ‘broken down LB’ award, Z.Thomas – the latter an affirmation will not make it thru 16 games 2009 let alone training camp unscathed.

Mutt with yet another tough day: from the River Falls website: “Cassel had a rough start to the teams 11-on-11 situational drill. Cassel’s first three passes were all incomplete. One hit ground without a receiver in the area.”

The good news? Umm…he wasn’t intercepted – but was only 1-4.

    Go Chiefs…

    1. trading Bowe at this point is stupid for so many reasons

    2. Apparently Dorsey showed up for offseason conditioning at 340lbs (same as Albert). Doubt Dorsey is under 300lbs yet, but apparently he did ok in saturday’s scrimmage.

    3. Tanner pardum has been inconsistent with his snaps. I’m suprised there isnt anyone available to replace him

    4. Engram seems to be an enigma. Some reports suggest he has had a horrible camp, while others say the exact opposite.

    5. Although I am impressed with Succop’s range, I think he needs to kick with more explosion and quickly or else he may continue to have blocked FG in the regular season.

    6. Thigpen is another enigma. He struggles with accuracy but is a playmaker when it counts. The exact opposite can be said about Croyle.

  • August 10, 2009  - Blazer383 says:

Mr. Tin Tin, I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen you discuss your reasons for disliking Haley; other than the “any 22″ notion that may or may not be true, and the quips regarding his golfing background.

I don’t know a lot about him, but I know that he learned from one of the best personnel guys around, his father; he put together a winning offense in AZ that went to the Superbowl, and he is decidedly more “old school” in his methods than what we’ve been used to in KC. I’d think he’d be your type of guy, knowing how you feel about football today vs. yesteryear.

If you have valid reasons to think Haley is a dud, I’d like to hear them.

RTT, sometimes you crack me up, most other times you annoy me

Is Cassel going to be nicknamed CaINT, ala TrINT? Croyle is not an NFL caliber QB. The guy could never find the end zone, even when healthy. Gailey worked a minor miracle with Thiggy and that horrible line, but Thiggy is inaccurate and became worthless, for some reason, in the second half of most games last year.

    - si si, what is it now thy Obuma clunker sale proponent nee hopeful?

“I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen you discuss your reasons for disliking Haley”

    - that’s because Rin be invisible if not entirely transparent; does what He can an limited internet paper desire…

    “other than the “any 22″

    - that be more than enough…it’s like this: twas to quote another faux genius – “acting stupidly” for to say anything of the sort. I have it on good authority that the gist is correct as to what he said.

It was a self-serving ego stroke by a nascent Head Coach who has accomplished nothing beyond creating alienation shortly after his arrival –

Will Rogers never met and Carnegie’s “How To Influence People & Win Friends” isn’t in the Chiefs coaching library of required reading…

Training camp to date as well the season 2009 will tell the tale; let’s see what transpires, shall we?

    “notion”

    - it was a Greek city-state on the west coast of Anatolia, about south of Izmir in modern Turkey, on the Gulf of Kuşadası; trust this informs you.

“that may or may not be true”

    - oh it’s true alright…

“and the quips regarding his golfing background.”

    - also true, every one of them; with a Titleist and a club in his hands, he’s more Gary Gilmore than Happy…

“I don’t know a lot about him, but I know that he learned from one of the best personnel guys around, his father”

    - he’s as Brad was to Ed buddy, er Budde…same difference, i.e., no comparison at all, really.
What’s in a name? Diphthongs – some just bigger dips than others.

“he put together a winning offense in AZ that went to the Superbowl”

    - wonderful… Phil Bengston was the architect of Lombardi’s great defenses in Green Bay – alas, as the Head Coach who replaced Vince, demolitionist.

Time will tell if your anointed in Kaycee soars or bores nee bombs; even if he excites he won’t be anything more at best than another Vermeil.

    Cynical? Realistic.

“and he is decidedly more “old school” in his methods than what we’ve been used to in KC. I’d think he’d be your type of guy, knowing how you feel about football today vs. yesteryear.”

    - if football be more about Lombardi trophies and less about style how many World Championships did hard guys like Vermeil or Schottenheimer deliver here in KC?

Did Bobby Knight impress Rin? Neither does but the point be, while style is great – a Stram had said in droves while Belichick has a hoodie,
    results speak loudest.

The retired Tony Dungy was about as scintillating as a piece of wet liver – it didn’t matter. Herm Edwards too- each won & went to the playoffs with their ’style’ doing it their way. I’ll take their approach over all the aforementioned coaches just like I prefer them to the likes of a Woody Hayes or a Frank Kush for example.

Like Al Davis said: “just win baby.” We shall see regards here ‘Show Me’ … deliver us from our Mis-sou-ri if you can.

“If you have valid reasons to think Haley is a dud, I’d like to hear them.”

    - he has funny cars (paraphrased ‘Jefferson Airplane’)

It will be interesting to see how some of these guys do against another colored jersey. Always hard to tell if either side of the ball is better than the other, they are both really good, or both really suck. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize you have to be able to catch the ball though. I think this will be a tough year for Cassel just because he will have too many dropped balls. Hope the defense really improves.

  • August 10, 2009  - alex k says:

the offense has to improve, but this is practice, with a new system ,a new group, new plays I dont care what they say about “same offense” yeah right we wont be running a shotgun all season.

Q Lawrence seems to be a guy with a lot of potential but if he doesnt catch the ball(on punts) it wont matter. Made a nice play in the scrimmage however adjusting his body for a TD, but one has to wonder how he has that down but not catching punts.

At this point the offense sound way too confused for the “Same system”

I dont agree on the DL, I think they are deep, I dont see a hole, in a 3-4 there is no DL pass rusher, we have two NT’s, and 3 guys to play well at end…Dorsey then can pass rush in the 4-3, and if hali really makes the transition who knows…

not that babb has been on, but babb gave mcbride and hali A grades from the scrimmage, thats really positive news. Mcbride remains the guy I believe with really surprise people.

I was up at the Scrimmage last Saturday…I am by no means an expert like dr bob here, but this is what I noticed..

    1) Cassel was so so, he threw for 2 pics and 1 TD, but also bobbled a snap that lead to a defensive TD. On the second INT (they were practically back to back) the defender had great position the ball was under thrown, Cassel screamed out a four letter word and was visibly shaken. Immediately afterwards he threw to Bowe on the side line and then was the 1st person to lead the team back out to the huddle…good sign I suppose, you gotta forget those INTS.

3)Brodie was Brodie on some plays he looks like the best qb on the field and at other times he looked the worst…..

3)Of all the QBs, I would say thigpen was the best, followed by cassel although none of them were that impressive.

    3) Jamal Charles had a couple of decent runs, one with a nice cut outside and then he just basically beat everyone for 30 yd TD. Of course he followed that up with a fumble on the next series, that drew a glare from Haley.

4)Haley primarily sat behind and watched the offense directly behind them, Clandergast our DC (sp) was constantly screaming encouragement at the Defense, he is definately quite the screamer.

5)Dline/LB play I thought was good, just about everyone got pressure on the QB. Dorsey had a few nice running play stiffs as well. Even T Jackson had a couple of nice moves and forced the QB out.

    6) The recievers did a decent job I think, I really wasnt watching them to much, I dont remember too many drops.

6)Pollard and a few linebackers had a few really good hits on recievers in the second half.

    7) After the scrimmage was over, they participated in conditioning drills. Haley yelled at a few players (Magee). Included in this conditioning was a 10 yard run back and forth. Waters found the farthest spot he possible could away from Haley, he proceeded to do the most pathetic 10 yard runs out of everyone. It was terrible, people in the stands were even yelling at him to pick it up….it amazes me how he can be all pro…hes lucky shields must have taught him all he knows about technique….but clearly he wont be a part of this team for too long….unless he shapes up…

8)Jackson appeared in pretty good shape actually, especially in the running drills at the end, of course he hasn’t participated like the rest, but I was impressed. Haley was yelling about being smart when your tired throught the drills.

“I do not know Herm’s record as well as his #1 fan, but didn’t his teams’ records go down the longer he was there.”

    - just the same as Schottenheimer, Vermeil, Noll & Landry among others. Right. ‘check.’

“Herm came with a rep of poor game management, and lived up (down?) to it. I still would have supported him if g.m. wanted him, but he didn’t, so I let go of it and moved on.”

    - is Rin supposed to care you did this, that or some other… He does not.

I do like the Bodette comment . Why do you feel the need to put down anyone that disagrees . Its evident that you think we are morons . Yes we Chief fans have rose colored glass if we didn’t we would have gave up on the Chiefs Long Ago. Faith & desire ……….. that this time they well get it right. Join the faith or move on to a team that you feel has what it takes to make you proud. J.T. Collins

“I do like the Bodette comment.”

    - Rin can understand that…He knew you would.

“Why do you feel the need to put down anyone that disagrees.”

    - style does not discriminate – Rin is an equal opportunity destroyer. He is not concerned with saying innocuous things – says what He believes.
If said cuts then wear steel mesh…truth hurts.

“Its evident that you think we are morons.”

    - ok; satire, sarcasm and biting wit… sticks & stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.

“Yes we Chief fans have rose colored glass if we didn’t we would have gave up on the Chiefs Long Ago.”

    - a resolve of such a heroic proportion… or blind faith.

“Faith & desire ……….. that this time they well get it right.’

    - uh huh…

“Join the faith or move on to a team that you feel has what it takes to make you proud.”

    - it’s nice the way you consider my well being… thanks – but Rin thinks He’ll stay right here all season long…

What a pleasure to see a real head coach go over situations in a game that the prior clown was deficient in, time and time again. Therefore he nor clueless Curl, his walking time piece, couldn’t show the team the right way of doing things since they didn’t know what that was. Haley’s attention to detail should win us, and/or avoid losing us, a few games in end of game situations, that have been lost over the last decade, as DV was also pretty clueless in game and time management.

Missouri’s still the “show me” state – so let them show us some execution and I’ll agree with you.

“Two ends of the veterans spectrum: OLB Mike Vrabel was talking and communicating all through a snap in a blitz period. Even as the ball was snapped, he was directing traffic.”

Another entertaining tidbit for Scott…looks like we’re getting value for this 2nd round pick. The net “Gonzo – for – Cassel plus Vrabel” could actually look “less than horrible.”

It is one thing for a rookie head coach to be yelling at veteran players and quite another to be yelling at veteran coaches. I don’t understand the need for all of the yelling (one of the things that I liked about Herm). I don’t think players respond well to all the yelling. They may play to keep their job but they won’t play out of respect for the coach. I don’t know, maybe the way Bob writes about it it just sounds worse than it really is. Speaking of enigma, when I listen to Haley talk I like what I hear but when I read what Bob writes I don’t like the guy at all.

    True Red & Gold-

There were aspects of Herm’s stoic attitude that I liked. However, I don’t believe he was able to get his point across to the players. I think his record speaks for itself.

When you watch a guy like Belichick on the sidelines he is actually coaching the players. He is making in-game changes to to the plan that was hatched earlier in the week. I didn’t see that with Herm. He would just stand there, fold his arms, and do his best Tony Dungy impression.

Yelling and cursing might not be for everyone, but standing there with your thumb in your backside helps no one.

One thing is certain…the Chiefs needed a change. Haley may not be the answer, but I think it’s too early to tell.

    - but at least this keeps him off the golf course this fall…

“but I think it’s too early to tell.”

    - oh, you can tell alright- that’s why had sign Mike Goff…
