College Preview: Top 32 For ’10 Draft

We looked at the top 32 players among the seniors two weeks ago and last week we covered the top underclassmen in the country who could make themselves available for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Today, we bring the lists together, for what is a top 32 list here at the end of October. There’s plenty of possibility of changes, additions and deletions before the college season is over.

And certainly, before the Draft comes in April, there will be a lot of shuffling.

But after talking with a handful of scouts and personnel types around the country, here’s a list of 32 players who barring injury will be considered by some team in the first round. It’s dominated by defensive guys, including the top four positions and five of the first seven.

There seems little doubt right now among scouts that Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh (top right) is at the top of just about every team’s draft board, whether No. 1, 2 or 3. As one scout said, “He’s a physical freak.” To be that big at 6-4, 300 pounds, and to have the quickness and speed that Suh has displayed makes him a very desirable player for any defensive system.

Close behind Suh is Tennessee safety Eric Berry (top left), who is physically gifted and NFL scouts are excited about his exposure to Monte Kiffin, an NFL coaching legend who is handling the defense for his son with the Volunteers.

Remember, this list is for amusement purposes only. Please, no wagering, at least not yet. We will update during the college bowl season and then again with the start of the NFL Scouting Combine.

We’ve also provided a guess on the Chiefs interest in these players. This is not based on the so called “right” players, but based on the team’s many needs and the talent shown by these soon to be available players. For instance, the franchise has drafted too many defensive linemen early in the last few years, so it would lmake sense that they would stay away from that area in 2010. However, a player of the quality of Suh might be too hard to pass up.

Anyway, you get the drift here. The Chiefs projected interest is rated this way:

  • ***** – Extremely interested; can we get him today.
  • **** – Very Interested; he’d look good in red and gold.
  • *** – Interested; not as important as other spots.
  • ** – Interest Peaked; only if he’s the “right” guy.
  • * – Pass; too many other spots to consider.

Here’s the October list:

I agree that all the top rated OTs have ***** next to their name. MORE than past time to fix the Oline, kick Albert into OG, and get the foundation on a firm footing.

Good list and rating for same, Bob.

why is jerry hughes only **’s? he’s arguably the most prolific pass rusher in college football and he would fit as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense. seeing as Vrabel is 34 years old and we still cant get a solid consistent pass rush shouldn’t he be a 3 to 4 or maybe even 5 star guy?

  • October 30, 2009  - Joe says:

I find it interesting that Terrence Cody is a one star. I think a dominating nose tackle is one of our most needed positions.

  • October 30, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    Bad thing is…

We could use about 10 picks in the first round.

I’m still holding out hope that we can improve our record enough this year…that we won’t be picking in the top 5 again.

  • October 30, 2009  - MDChief says:

I agree with you, Thunder. Bring in a top-flight LT, move Albert inside, draft a right tackle with another top pick. Move Waters to center.
OLB, WR, and NT,TE and safety are all needs. WR needs to be a top-end free agent signing-same with TE. WRs take too long to develop, typically, and it’s time to start winning next year.

  • October 30, 2009  - Adam says:

The only problem with terrence cody is he won’t be a dominant NT. Yes, he will more than likely be a great 2 down run stopper. But there are legit concerns about his weight and endurance(something haley has emphasized this year)

If we do pick in the top five, we need to take Eric Berry, Have Mr. Brown leave town(or be a sub) and have Berry hold it down. Look at the Steelers without Troy Polamalu and with him. Berry will do that same exact thing.

Also, you guys are giving up on Albert way to easy. He’s lost weight, has a new blocking scheme and new coaching staff. He’s proven that he can play at a high level at LT. I think you should look at Pioli’s draft record for O-line, he shows a lot of love between rounds 2 and 3. I’m think we have three positions of need on the O-line.
Center:Niswanger is a good backup or guard, he’s getting pushed back almost everytime
RG: Goff has been a bust FA signing.
LG: Waters is iffy with his position in the new regime, we need to get a guy who can fill in his position assuming his attitude changes.

Yes, RT is going to be solid with O’callahan. I haven’t heard anything bad from him for awhile has anyone else?

I wouldn’t mind Cody, since we could use a massive, true NT a la Jamal Williams in SD, or Ted Washington followed by Vince Wilfork in NE, but it’s still early. Since we’ll probably be picking somewhere in or near the top 5, with all the QBs available, we MIGHT be able to trade down, stockpile picks, and still get a good OT like Charles Brown. Inevitably, this list will change plenty before April, but when you root for a team as bad as the Chiefs, the draft is the thing to look forward to!

No strong opinion of first pick. It has to be an instant starter and forecast for a 10 career. No reaches, like Jackson. So far Pioli had hard luck last year but a trade down for a 1st and 3rd would be perfect but probably not likely. Another Jackson/Magee is unacceptable. For me forget TE, G, OT, C in first round, how about a RB or my favorite, Suh. How about something wild, trade Cassel for a pick and draft the best QB??

  • October 30, 2009  - vincent belt says:

Here are the players that would seem to be good fits for the Chiefs
    1. Berry-Ed Reed clone who can be a game changer
    2. Suh-Seems to be powerful encough to be a 3-4 or 4-3 .
    3. Okung-Depends on if Albert continues to give up sacks. Our weakness seems to be from the C or G. The TEs blocking is weak
    4. Bryant -Depends upon background checks and work ethic-If he checks out positively-he looks like a number 1, plays like Boldin.
    5. T, Cody-A true NT who is an immovable object. If he continues to show dedication to improving his fitness, he could rise quickly.

  • October 30, 2009  - vincent belt says:

If they drop out of the top 5-Look at one of the top LBs.
    1. McClain-Very Bright-Can play inside or rush. Use Vrabel as a mentor.
    2. Jerry Hughes-A demon as a pass rusher-Don’t we still need one of those? The Senior Bowl will show a lot on how he adapts to LB.

  • October 30, 2009  - vincent belt says:

Taylor Mays has bust all over him. Let the Raiders take him!!

  • October 30, 2009  - Will says:

It will be interesting to see what Pioli does in this draft with his own personnel people and scouts in the organization. The first day after the draft last year he purged everyone from the old regime. Now, it’s his guys…no excuses. Should make for a fascinating off season!

  • October 30, 2009  - mr awsome says:

i know we need a good line but man dez bryant looks amazing when he plays. that guys got a good character from what i heard the announcers say, and with piolis record for taking line men in the other rounds maybe we could get 1 their, if not him i say we go for whoever is our draft boards best g or t whatever 1 we need most. but if this new guy in our slot long i thinks his name is plays as good as ppl say then we gotta go with a t or g and in round 2 get mount cody and with our 2nd 2nd rounder get another g or t.

  • October 30, 2009  - mr awesome says:

awesome job bob i love talking about our next draft. if you did something like that every day i wouldnt complain.

  • October 30, 2009  - St. Paul 1 says:

It’s unfortunate they threw all that money at Cassel, as they may well have a shot at one of the top QBs. As it is, it will no doubt be a few years before they give up on Cassel. That being the case, I guess more help on the offensive line is probably top priority. Doesn’t really matter which position.

  • October 31, 2009  - Lee says:

Draft the top OT and move Albert to right OT. Then draft a guard or center in the second round. We must improve the offensive line.

Here’s an article I wrote on my blog about our two lines.

  • October 31, 2009  - jimbo says:

With the amount of time it takes to groom a D-lineman, I would pick up a top flite free agent next year. Money for a good one is not a problem in KC.

  • October 31, 2009  - Adam says:

    St. Paul,
Why would you want to get rid of cassel? The guy’s obviously a playmaker. Add another playmaker at WR, solidify our line, have a decent running game(which we hopefully already have with Kolby, Jamal and Dantrell) and we have ourselves a very dangerous offense. I know a lot of teams have had luck with the previous high end quarterbacks, but remember for every Stafford, there is a Joey Harrington. For every Peyton Manning, there’s a Ryan Leaf. We got a quarterback with upside(which is what you look for in a draftable QB) and he has like four years of NFL tutelage under possibly the greatest QB to play the game.
This draft is ridiculously deep in talent. Don’t worry guys’, we’ll be able to find a RT in the late second early third. We could actually fill alot of holes in this years draft. Here’s what I’d like to see
1: Eric Berry, playmaker and instantly wins us at least 4 games(it would stop those big,big pass plays)
2a: Jason Fox, RT Miami: If we kick Calahan to RG(where he’s probably a better fit) and Fox to RT, the only real weak point would be Center on our line. Which, I’m sure we can mask some way. We also got Allen from the dolphins who hasn’t looked too bad.
2b. Mike Williams, WR Syracuse. A lot of draftniks like this guy, saying he’s put up some big numbers despite having junkyard college quarterbacks. If he puts it all together, we’ll have three solid(maybe four with Lance Long) WR’s for Cass to throw too.
    3. George Selvie, DE/OLB South Florida. This guy is easily a year away from making an impact, which will be about the time Vrabel should start to think about hanging em’ up. There is no doubt that the guy has the ability to play in the NFL.
    4. Pat Angerer, ILB Iowa. I like this guy, he averages 12 tackles a game, which it’s probably doubtful that he’ll still be there at Round 4, but like I said, this class is deep! If he is still available, I’d say he could push for playing time vs. Demorrio Williams but probably could use a year to watch and learn.

Adam, other than not being LJ just what have the other 3 RBs of the Chiefs ever done. One game here or there does not make a 16 game season. Like many who know nothing, guys fall in love with the guy who never plays. Same for backup QBs and some stiff from your favorite college. The other 3 RBs are backup for a reason.

  • October 31, 2009  - mr awesome says:

i just realised why is tebow on the list hes so overated its not even funny just cause he trys hard ppl make him out to be peyton manning hes gonna fail in the nfl i promise what can he do as a pro never seen him catch any balls i bet theirs a reason and if hes just a running back then big deal hes not that agile for a rb the only way he looks good is because of the trick plays that florida runs with the optionand whos gonna run that kinda o in the nfl on a full time basis.

  • October 31, 2009  - Buffalo Jay says:

I find it intriguing to discuss next years draft. Our team has many needs, but I think it has been demonstrated over and over again that this game is won in the trenches. We have invested a lot into our d-line over the last few years and although we still need help there, I think our most glaring need is the O-line. If this year has shown us anything, it’s that we cannot run the football. We’re losing the battle along the offensive line. No push in the run game, and no protection in the pass game.

So, I agree with some of the other posters here that we need to take the top O-lineman available when we pick. If we can trade down and pick up some extra picks, even better. But we still need to take the top lineman available. I also like the idea of moving Albert to LG, and moving Waters to C. I think Niswanger would be better at RG, and we use the best player we have available to play RT. Moving Albert to LG is not a knock on him, I think he is a solid Tackle, but moving him back to his natural position would make him extremely dominant. These changes would improve our O-line immensely, and along with it our total offensive production, which we all know has been a joke over the past few years.

Time to right the ship, some players are more exciting than O-line, but they won’t help this team improve next year. That’s my two cents!
