NFL Combine: Chan Gailey

From Indianapolis, Indiana

There were former Chiefs all over Lucas Oil Stadium on Thursday as the NFL Combine really got cooking.

Miami GM and former Chiefs scout Jeff Ireland met with the media. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli is scheduled for the podium in the afternoon. Right before Ireland, new Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey spoke with the assembled scribes and the like.

Gailey talked about the Bills and whether RB Marshawn Lynch is available (he indicated he was not) and the future of WR Terrell Owens (he has not yet spoken to T.O.) Buffalo may be in the market for a quarterback (think Brodie Croyle) but Gailey wouldn’t commit to that.

Here’s Chan talking about the day he was fired by Todd Haley and the aftermath for him.

Bob At The Super Bowl With … Eli Manning

From Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Eli Manning owns a Super Bowl ring from the New York Giants victory two years ago over the New England Patriots. This Sunday, he’ll be at Sun Financial Field to watch his brother Peyton go for a second championship as the Indianapolis Colts face the New Orleans Saints.

Manning makes no bones about the fact he’ll be rooting for his brother, but he also talks about the Saints, his hometown team when he was a kid growing up in New Orleans.

Those were just some of the subjects Eli talked about as he visited the Gatorade Performance Lab at Super Bowl XLIV. That’s Eli in the red cap, getting in the Bod Pod testing system used by the folks from Gatorade. Enjoy the conversation.

Podcast: Todd Haley Hired

He’s the 11th head coach in Chiefs history.  Todd Haley was introduced by Clark Hunt and Scott Pioli on Friday at the Chiefs facility.

It was a standard-issue press conference, as Haley answered all the major questions but really didn’t have any answers, given his standing of less than 24 hours as the head coach.

Introduced by Pioli, here are the highlights of what Haley told the Kansas City media.

Podcast: Quarterback Mark Sanchez

From Tampa, Florida

Thanks to the folks at Gatorade, I got a chance to sit down and talk to Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez. He’s rated either No. 1 or No. 2 among quarterbacks coming out of the college ranks this year and headed to the NFL.

So, it wasn’t a surprise that Sanchez asked me more questions than I asked him. He wanted to know all about the Chiefs and who the head coach was going to be. Sanchez met Tony Gonzalez for the first time on Thursday night in Tampa and got an earful from the Chiefs tight end as well.

I can tell you already that he’s a very polished young man when it comes to dealing with the media and the stuff that comes from being the in the spotlight quarterback. Very intelligent answers, well spoken and polite.

The kid has those tools to make it big.  The question the Chiefs and 31 other teams must address is whether he has the physical and mental tools to be a successful NFL quarterback.  That’s all coming up with the NFL Combine, workouts and then April’s NFL Draft.

My first question to Sanchez was whether he was prepared to start his career with a football team that will likely not be very good.  Here’s what he had to say:

Podcasting: Carl Peterson 1/2

Carl Peterson employment with the Chiefs ended with the turn of the calendar to 2009 at midnight Thursday.  Since the decision to move up his departure to this season, Peterson has not talked publicly.
