5th-Round Choice: OT Colin Brown/Missouri

Colin Brown/Missouri/OT

  • HT: 6-8
  • WT: 325 pounds
  • Born:
  • High School: Braymer High School, Missouri, where he was an all-state basketball player.
  • Testing: in Pro Day at Missouri he ran 5.38 seconds in 40-yard dash, 27.5 inches in vertical jump, 8-feet, 4-inches in the broad jump and he bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times.

2008 season: started 14 games at right tackle, but missed some game time because of a sprained right ankle. He was selected honorable mention for All-Big 12 Conference by the coaches. He was first-team All-Big 12 Academic Team.

2007: started 14 games at right tackle. He won the team’s J. Ed “Brick Travis Interior Lineman Award and was selected All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention by the conference’s coaches.

2006: played in 13 games with some game action on offense at left guard, where he was No. 2 on the depth chart.

2005:
played 2 games as a backup center. Brown was given a scholarship at the start of the season.

2004: red-shirt freshman season as a walk-on.

Overall analysis:  started 28 consecutive games at RT in Mizzou’s very effective and prolific offense in the 2007-08 seasons.  He showed up in the Tigers program as a walk-on from Braymer, which is on Route A at the intersecton of Route 116, just off Route 36 between Cameron and Chilicothe in Caldwell County.  Yes, he grew up a Chiefs fan.  His versatility of being able to play all five positions and his time in a winning big-time program like Missouri figure to be major reasons he was selected by the Chiefs.  He was a McDonald’s All-America nominee in basketball, where as asenior he averaged 18.5 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks per game for a team that went 26-3 and reached the Misouri state quarterfinals.  He also earned first-team All-Missouri as a defensive tackle in his senior season. Overall he won 11 athletic letters at BHS. “This is a dream come true,” Brown said. “Everybody up in this area is a Chiefs fan. To be able to be right here staying at home and playing for the Chiefs  is unbelieveable, a dream come true.”

Mr. Pioli, you have a starting RB and two starting QB’s that ended their SEASONS last year due to injuries because the OFFENSIVE LINE could not protect them. You get one FA Guard and wait until the 5th round to draft anything…

Pardon me for my slight bit of concern.

The Right (22) 53…I’m still waiting.

From the new GM I expect more!

The following top 100 (Scouts Inc) kids were still on the board when the Chiefs selected Colin Brown in the 5th.
Colin brown did not even make Scouts Inc’s top 250!
Colin Brown was the 58th ranked OT, there were 44 ranked higher at the time he was picked.
I truly do not understand this pick at all.

    Mark’

Sounds to me like you need to ask Clark for a job. You must be far more qualified than Pioli.

  • April 26, 2009  - jt says:

We don’t have to understand in Pioli we must trust . While we are all great GMs on here we must have been overlook by NFL teams . Its the past history of the Chiefs that cause us to be concerned .While at the draft yesterday most didn’t like our pick . I (we) just have to have faith that Pioli knows more than us . In a year we well know if that trust is real or not.

I was a little surprised by this particular player but not the position drafted. For some reason Robinson is falling further than I thought he would.

But as to your list, you should throw out all the Tight Ends, already 3 on the roster, obviously the Chiefs have no intentions of featuring the position.

Then you have to ask your self how many other teams are passing on scout incs projections.

Pioli/Haley have a formula, and there not deviating from it.

  • April 26, 2009  - Graeme says:

How many Super Bowls has Scouts Inc won? Oh ya, zero.

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

It also adds some local flavor to the roster. Lets face it, the Chiefs need to generate as much interest as possible.

  • April 26, 2009  - colby says:

I like that they took a OT, but this kid seems like a reach to me. 23 reps? Seems like a weak kid for his size…..granted, that’s 23 more reps than I could do, but I’m not 330 pound NFL prospect either.

Hopefully Pioli knows something that Scouts doesn’t, I’m just not very excited by these picks as of yet. I’ll reserve judgment until we actually see them play for us but I’m scratching my head a bit here today.

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

There have only been 3 other O-Line taken since the Chiefs selected Brown at 139 and there now at 160. Several Line Backers (I’m not sold on what we have so far) lots of TE’s and WO which we still need to address too. Also need to get a Back!

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

Finally! Some one drafted a Corn Husker. Cody Glenn OLB. Was starting to think they may get shut out.

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

Wow! I think Carolina got great value with Robinson at #163!

  • April 26, 2009  - colby says:

Robinson seems like an absolute steal in round 5.

Personally, I’d have liked to see us draft LB Scott McKillop out of Pitt instead of Brown. He went a few picks later to the Niners. I think Singletary can spot a good ILB when he sees one.

  • April 26, 2009  - Mark says:

Another pick to clean up the mess Herm drafted at this position last year that couldn’t get on the field, Barry Richardson.
Theme of this draft. Pioli to Herm: Thanks for your idiotic picks the last few years. EVERY pick so far is at a position Herm thought he shored up over the last few years, but a REAL personnel guy is laughing at those picks, while he’s crying at having to draft to fix them.

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

LB to me is still very much in question for the Chiefs. Hali will probably suffice as an outside guy, but not sure he is a long term answer. DJ! Ugh! Major disappointment! The story that went around about the way Haley doged Franklin s ass, is exactly the way he should approach DJ! I honestly hope they can trade him, but maybe with a REAL scheme he’ll meet some of the expectations people had of him coming out of Texas. I don’t see his prissy ass making it in a 34.

Still think Center is a position of need too. Hopefully replacing Jones will help Niswanger, I’m a little skeptical. I thought the O-Line played better as a whole with W.Smith out there, when Niswanger got crushed into an accordion on a QB Sneak, and missed a couple of games.

RB is another position that is suspect, so many holes and so few picks……..

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

I hope Brian and Haley kiss and make up, be a good time in his career to move to Center.

  • April 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

There’s a WO. Don’t know sh!t about him, anyone else?

  • April 26, 2009  - Josh says:

I like this pick. Versatile, played a lot on the right side, and this guy is huge!

  • April 26, 2009  - B in SC says:

The teams success does not hinge on this draft. It is one part of the puzzle. There will be free agents to sign before camp starts. The LB from Seattle was just designated a free agent. Not that I am advocating signing him, but there will be other veterans released because of the draft in the next week or so. Take a breath.

  • April 26, 2009  - Mark says:

All in all this is the worst draft I’ve ever seen the Chiefs have. Pioli is worse than Peterson at drafting and likewise Haley appears to not be as intelligent a Coach as Herm Edwards. It will be a short stay in KC for Pioli and Haley.

  • April 26, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Mark, why are you contradicting yourself? Anyway this draft wasn’t spectacular, but hey it’s all about the right 53 year old, these guys will have a chance to sit the bench until there older and more productive, lol… LIke the old LB’s we have, I still think Zack Thomas was a bad pickup, he didn’t play that great last year…

  • April 26, 2009  - MARIO AKA BIG CHIEF says:

STOP GIVING PIOLI & HALEY A FREE PASS !!! THEY WERE THE ONES WHO CAME IN TALKING BIG ABOUT WINNING. SO WE SHOULD MAKE THEM ACCOUNTABLE. STOP BLAMING HERM & CARL THEY ARE GONE.PIOLI & HALEY ADDED NOTHING TO THIS TEAM TODAY WE STILL HAVE THE SAME NEEDS WE ALWAYS HAD. VERY VERY DISAPPOINTING DRAFT IF YOU CAN’T DRAFT YOU WON’T WIN IN THE NFL. HOW MANY SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYERS DOES A TEAM NEED ? SOME ONE HAS TO PLAY OFFENSE & DEFENSE.

  • April 26, 2009  - Hank says:

    Bob,
Will you consider a followup piece on what this means to LAST years draft class… especially OT Richardson and DB Morgan? Thanks…

  • April 26, 2009  - burnsomatic says:

I know none of you fans, put the time and effort into scouting all these players in the draft. It is funny how you say we should take this guy instead of the one we did. The only reason you dont like they way we picked is because mel kiper said he didnt have him rated high. That doesnt mean sht. When you put the time in ti like the cheifs do then, you can talk. until then just shut up and wait and see how these kids pan out.

  • April 26, 2009  - Mark says:

Different Mark. This Mark thinks this draft was a direct reflection on what Pioli and Haley thought of Herm’s draft picks, especially along the DL.
Since Carl and Herm are responsible for this mess that Pioli and Haley have to fix, why shoud we stop hammering Herm and his pathetic draft picks.

  • April 26, 2009  - JP says:

Different schemes require different players. The guys Herm drafted were asked to do different things than Haley will ask them to do. D-Line is different for 34 from 43. The ‘Draft Specialists’ that work for ESPN/NFL-N aren’t GM’s for NFL teams. The team hasn’t even put on pads yet and everyone is in panic mode. RELAX….

  • April 26, 2009  - Mark says:

After reconsidering, I do think this draft was a direct reflection on the lack of preparation by Pioli and Haley. They have made a giant mess of this team in short order.
