Cassel: “Be Efficient, Run Offense And Do My Job”
From River Falls, Wisconsin
There are some butterflies building in Matt Cassel’s stomach.
They go along with his sore right arm.
That’s how the Chiefs starting quarterback will return on Friday to Kansas City and into Saturday’s pre-season opener against the Houston Texans.
The butterflies are natural as he’ll make his debut at Arrowhead Stadium as the franchise quarterback. So is the sore arm; as the No. 1 passer, he’s gotten a lot of more throws in two weeks of training camp than he’s seen in the past.
“I’m definitely a little antsy and excited about getting in front of the Arrowhead fans and to be there because Arrowhead is such a historical place,” Cassel said Thursday afternoon in the northwoods.
“My goal is to go out be efficient and run the offense and hopefully we have some success. My goal every time I go out there is be efficient, run the offense and do my job.”
Cassel said he’s gotten no word about how much he’ll play against the Texans, but he’s ready to go the whole way if that’s what is asked of him. “The more reps I can get the better,” said he said.
He also thinks there’s opportunity in these exhibition games for his side of the ball to get better.
“Any time you go into the pre-season it’s a great opportunity for the team and the offense to come together and work on things,” said Cassel. “Whether it’s the running game, or the passing game, there are a lot of new concepts in our offense and I’m sure we’ll be looking at a lot of different things this weekend.”
Cassel’s arm is sore, but it’s nothing structural. It’s the sore arm every No. 1 quarterback in the league is dealing with after two weeks of training camp.
“My arm is about to fall off right now,” Cassel said. “It’s been one a day, two-a-day and then every drill you can think of and obviously as the starter, you get a lot more reps and a lot more throws. I’m going to have to monitor it going forward.”
Sounds like our boy Haley needs to rest Cassels arm, but im sure that wont happen.
I sure hope more fans that expected show up saturday. It could be a lift to all the new faces that came the the greatest franchise in the NFL!! (its a stretch I know)

- a case for acid reflux…
“Cassel’s arm is sore, but it’s nothing structural.”
- no, it’s really nothing at all – and that’s the problem…
“My arm is about to fall off right now” Cassel said.”
- must be all those INTS you’ve thrown that be tiring it out, Mutt…
“It’s been one a day, two-a-day and then every drill you can think of”
- yes, by Rin’s count about 32 INTS so far this training camp, a week 7 a half in – you’re very consistent if not as accurate as advertised…
“and obviously as the starter, you get a lot more reps and a lot more throws.”
- and you are not disappointing the DB’s… you are making them look good, better’n they really are.
(Cue the DB’s- er, ‘The Stylistics’)
“God bless you
You make me feel brand new
I sing this song for you
You make me feel brand new
For God blessed me with you
You make me feel brand new…”
“I’m going to have to monitor it going forward.”
- don’t bother, Mutt … Rin has His eye on you. Come Saturday night another group Chiefs fandom will be following this Pied Piper mine’s lead…

Well gorillafan, maybe not the greatest franchise but it certainly has the best fans and crowd atmosphere in the NFL!

From the mothership:
“The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday that the club has signed free agent LS Thomas Gafford…
The Chiefs waived LS Tanner Purdum on Thursday.”
hahahahaha!
You know Haley has been pissed at Purdum for awhile. He has been trying to give the job to anyone (studebaker, lokey, etc) but no one stepped up.
I’m suprised they didnt bring gammon out of retirement.
Rin – Hey I like the Stylistics. You sir, are no Russell Thompkins, Jr. LOL
Gammon is too old, unfortunately. I believe he wanted to retire for some time.
MadJew
I knew Jackie Mason… MadJew, you’re no Alan Greenspan either (nor even Leonard Lipshi+z.)
so much for cassel, are we really handing the pk job to succop. did i miss something what happened to conner barth? can somebody fill me in?
Barth is in Miami now. Succop has the stronger leg and is just as accurate, if not more accurate, than Barth.
barth doesnt have the range to kickoff deep and is a liability on FG beyond 30yrds. He has since been picked up to provide competition in Miami. He will likely be cut there also.
So,
I’m wondering why NFL head coaches don’t consult MLB managers and pitching coaches on the concept of throw/pitch counts in not over working to the point of pain/ineffectiveness/injury with their QBs? The motion for each is similar but then we get into the injury/hurt debate with the tough NFL guys.
This issue, now surfaced yet again, has always mystified me as to the apparent hubris of NFL coaches vs. the real world empirical proof of MLB.
Curious. Stupid? The reality is somewhere ‘in there’ when stories about sore-armed QBs emerge as we see with this latest example.

Would you please go back to using more smileys?
It makes it easier to scroll past your hermraider crap.
ive said it all along, ill say it again
succop wins the job over barth(done)
lawrence makes the roster(wow im actually bringing him up and not Rin, go figure)
Cassel has a good season, but will improve with time..
to write him off because his arm is sore?
Im sure if KC loses the preseason game, some will bash Haley, if they win, its just the preseason…
I say
Last year the Lions went 4-0 preseason….0-16 regular season…period.
if they are smart cassel plays less than a quarter.
why spend time bashing the team or players…lets discuss the center battle, or RT and maybe Herb stepping in, or the large quantity of mediocre WR’s that must be cut to 5? 6?…Or discuss Battle possibly being the 2 with charles going super situational.
there is mike brown not pushing Pollard(also a prediction) there is the linebacker group with hali/mcbride playing better and looking like LB’s….there is the battle for the 4/5 corner spots…
So much to discuss, but lets continue to talk about the same 3 people.
I’m actually really encouraged on the reports of Hali. I had a hunch he would be a pretty good linebacker. It may be a little rough this year but I think with a couple years under his belt he could be above-average.
Haven’t heard much on McBride. Anyone know how he’s doing?
The other spot to keep an eye on will be offensive line. Rudy did not perform well last year, might get pushed this year. Would they move Goff or Waters over? Is Ghiaciuc going to push for a starting job? Last year there was a lot of pressure right up the middle. Right tackle is an adventure in blocking also.
Preseason doesn’t count. Fans, players, and coaches know that, but come fourth quarter everyone starts looking at the score like it counts.
NPinkc, I agree with what you said about Hali. I’ve actually heard a lot of good stuff about him in the camp reports.
Hali’s lost about what, 20 pounds? That would put him at around 260. That’s ideal weight for a pass rushing OLB. I think he may be a pleasant surprise this year.
I would love to see Hali make it even though I said before that I thought he would be cut. It is easy to pull for the guys that put their head down and go to work. Sounds like that is what he is doing.
I’m with Alex K on this game. I am very interested to see how many of the less glamorous positions pan out. OL could be very interesting because of the possibility of position switches. TE and DL are the other ones I’m interested in.

- Rin loves it when they beg…
“It makes it easier to scroll past your hermraider crap.”

Mike Brown has pushed Pollard, that is the reason for his good play so far this camp.
No I actually read a sentence, which is one too many you loser raider fan.
Yes I’m talking to you burnsomatic.
