Chiefs Make Moves

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs subtracted three and added one to their roster on Tuesday.

They released OT Andrew Carnahan, WR-KR Kevin Robinson and LB Curtis Gatewood.

They signed TE Sean Ryan (right).

Ryan, 6-5 and 260 pounds, has spent the last five years banging around the NFL, spending time with Dallas, the New York Jets, Miami, New Orleans and San Francisco.  Over his career, he’s caught 12 passes for 105 yards.  Ryan came into the league as a fifth-round choice of Dallas in the 2004 NFL Draft out of Boston College.  He spent the ‘04-’05 seasons with the Cowboys and was traded in ‘06 by Dallas to the New York Jets for a seventh-round draft choice.  He played the ‘06 and ‘07 seasons in New York.

Last year, Ryan played one game for Miami (week No. 1), and one game for New Orleans (week No. 6) before signing with San Francisco on November 3rd.  He played in six games with the Niners, starting their Nov. 30 game against Buffalo.

At B.C., Ryan was a freshman defensive end who moved to tight end as a sophomore and ended up catching 75 passes for 950 yards and 12 TDs in 37 games

Carnahan and Gatewood joined the team last year as the team searched for injury replacements.  Carnahan was signed on October 29 off the Jacksonville practice squad.  He was inactive for nine games.  Gatewood joined the team on Nov. 19 and played in six games, contributing four special teams tackles.

Robinson was a sixth-round choice and becomes the third member of that 12-player ‘08 Draft class to be sent packing by the new regime.  Preceding him out the door were WR Will Franklin and TE Michael Merritt.  He played in eight games last year, returning 11 punts for 94 yards and 19 kickoff returns for 420 yards.  He also contributed three tackles on special teams.

The Chiefs now have 65 players on their roster.

3 gone from the draft. Strong feeling at this point is that Dorsey is a bust. The beat goes on…..

Well hopefully now they won’t feel a need to draft another TE. Unless Gonzalez is traded of course, which hopefully won’t happen.

Gatewood and Carnahan were dead wood anyway but I’m sorry to see Robinson go. I have a feeling they cleared out Robinson and Franklin so they could have a spot open to sign Marty Booker either before or after the draft.

The Chiefs “great” draft class of 2008 is starting to really thin out.

No way, we must give Dorsey a chance. He has a ton of talent, but rarely at DT good in their first seasons and he was doubled most of last year because the chiefs didn’t have any other threats on the DL. I think the beggest question mark on Dorsey isn’t if he is a bust, but how and where he will play in a 3-4.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Robinson gets picked up quickly. Don’t understand that move. I am sorry to see him go, I thought he had some promise. I hope he goes on to have a good career. Colby may have a good point but letting two young receivers go to pick up one that is done doesn’t make much sense.

Maybe they plan on drafting Crabtree?

  • April 21, 2009  - colby says:

Here’s Todd McShay’s complete Chiefs mock draft. The whole thing is way too big but here is what one “expert” thinks the Chiefs will do provided they don’t make any trades.

1st LB Aaron Curry Wake Forest
    3rd DL Fili Moala USC
    4th OG Kraig Urbik Wisconsin
5th OT Cornelius Lewis Tennessee State
6th WR Ramses Barden Cal Poly
7th DB Chris Owens San Jose State
    7th S Lendy Holmes Oklahoma

Not that this means much, but since Bob is refusing to play mock draft with us, I thought some of you would be interested. I’m still not a fan of taking Curry at 3, but Moala and Urbik would be nice additions to the lines. However, I can’t comprehend why McShay has Barden falling all the way to round 6. Has Barden done something stupid or had a bad workout that I haven’t heard about? Most mocks I’ve seen have him in the 2nd or 3rd, and with his size (6′6″) and TD production in college, I’d have to think the Raiders would nab him before he got that far down.

    Thoughts?

Agreed True Red. I think I’d rather have Robinson than Booker because if nothing else, Robinson could still be a factor in the return game. The new management continues to send the message of change throughout Arrowhead…..

That could very well be. You know Haley is going to want all the weapons he can get on offense…he’s used to having Fitz and Boldin catching passes. And who the hell knows what’s happening in Pioli’s mind.

Maybe that’s what Engram (and Booker possibly) are here to do. Teach Bowe and Crabtree.

Speculations…speculations. Not for much longer, though.

Robinson was too slow to be a great kick returner and didnt offer much as a WR. I thought Savage was our best KR anyway, I like all of these moves.

Apparently the 08 draft was just full of guys who are not able to play in a different system, who would of thunk it?? If Dorsey cannot make this 09 team, what a mess the old management left in KC.

This new TE might be a sign of the passing on of Tony, hope not.

Sanchez may be the man of the draft in 09.

Why is everybody giving up on dorsey so soon? He was the best defensive linemen in college, for a reason. Turk and Tank improved from there rookie year why cant dorsey?

  • April 21, 2009  - Massfan says:

Anyone that thinks dorsey is a bust just does not know football. He was playing one of the toughest positions for a rookie to play in the NFL. It take a few years for these players to mature I don’t care when they are drafted.Albert Haynesworth only had 26 tackles his rookie year and 4 an 1/2 sacks total after his third year. I’m pretty sure the knowledgeable fans of kansas city would have wanted him run out of town and the GM and coach fired. I believe that he just signed a contract for roughly 100 million this year.

  • April 21, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

Dorsey led at rookie DT in sacks and tackles last year. I wouldn’t call that a bust.

  • April 21, 2009  - the punk-you-asian guy says:

    burnsoatic
my god ur saying r d line improved last year we had the fewest sack % in history but we improved

  • April 21, 2009  - tm1946 says:

While you love to dwell on it, Dorsey is not a bust. He has the potential to be a bust. The Chiefs were not just bad on defense last year, they were worse. He actually had a good year for a rookie but it is time to get ready for 09 and where is Dorsey? ON THE SIDE LINES. The 09 version of the Chiefs has to be better than 08s. Dorsey was part of 08 and now needs to be part of the new Chiefs. Same goes for Waters and Tony, either get on board or get out of the way. That might apply to you Dorsey apologists also.

  • April 21, 2009  - shawnINtexas says:

All of you Dorsey “haters” will eat crow…mark my words…

  • April 21, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

There are few instant successes in the NFL. A lot of guys like to knock on Dorsey, Franklin, & Robinson after their rookie year. That is ridiculous. Gohlston was picked right after Dorsey and he had what? 9 tackles and barely saw the field. I don’t see the Jets releasing him. Some guys are just so anti Herm that they knock anything to do with him.

I don’t get this ego thing with new Head Coaches though. Why is it they dump as many guys from the previous coach as they can, as quickly as they can.? Are they afraid to be accused of winning with another coaches players??

  • April 21, 2009  - alex k says:

Agreed, Dorsey is not a bust, I really hate that label for ANYONE after 1 year, let alone a guy who put up better rookie stats than haynesworth and sapp….with no linebackers…

  • April 21, 2009  - Mark says:

Merritt was an idiot, Franklin was a wuss, and K Rob was just too slow. Barry Richardson and Dujuan Morgan are on the clock from Herm’s great A+ draft, which thus far is a C, depending on how Dorsey develops.
As for Dorsey, he was absolutely a disappointment as a Rookie. Tackle stats are meaningless. But he was not a bust, and hopefully the new regime will use him to his abilities better than Herm did. Dorsey is a shoot the gap guy, not a guy who sits there absorbing a block, and being handled one on one playing straight up on a guard. Tank was doubled more than Dorsey last year.

  • April 22, 2009  - Chuck P says:

If he’s been on that many teams in the last 5 years, he must not be very good. Think about it.

  • April 22, 2009  - Chuck P says:

If he has been on that many teams in the last 5 years, he must not be very good!!!!!

  • April 22, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Dorsey is a bust, lol… Then Warren Sapp should have had his ass kicked out of the NFL his first year, the Buccaneers were not good when he first came there.

Who is Chuck P talking about??

Herm’s drafts actually have been pretty good, He has starters in the secondary, actually looks like its going to be at least all 4 of them, then you have Tank, turk and dorsey who so far haven’t been replaced.

I like that the Pioli/Haley feel that Ryan would be a good replacement for Gonzalez!!

Im assuming Mark is an analyst with ESPN, Dorsey even for playing straight up with a guard did pretty damn well in his rookie season.

tm1946 how many of those hybrid players do you think can play in the 4-3 system, most teams are picking players that can play in their own systems. Look at the patriots for that example, which patriot other than Ty Law had any amount of success after leaving that system?

I am shocked. Two players that were injured when we drafted them are now cut? I couldn’t believe it when they were drafted. And now we find out they were just using up totally good air? Shocked, I am.

Last years draft is unraveling at warp speed. Not that anyone hits on all their picks, but this one got mediocre pretty fast.

Seriously? They cut 3 out of 12 players from that draft (4th, 6th and 7th rounders) and it becomes a mediocre draft? Come on B in SC…I think you might be reaching a bit.
