From the Mouth Of Todd 10/5

From the Truman Sports Complex

Todd Haley met with the media horde on Monday afternoon and the session went for 26 minutes.

Haley handled the questions and even provided some good answers.

Here’s the important stuff he talked about.

ANY POSITIVES OUT OF SUNDAY’S GAME AGAINST THE GIANTS

“I think our defense made some progress. I think our defense I s starting to work together a little bit. Were they perfect? No. Can we give up 27 points and expect to win? Not usually. I saw some encouraging signs from them.”

ANALYSIS OF MATT CASSEL’S PERFORMANCE ON SUNDAY

“Not good enough to win. He has to be better. Was Matt Cassel the reason we lost? No, it was a group effort. I think the kid is a tough, competitive guy, who fought it out yesterday.

“We had some dropped balls on some better throws than others. It’s an across the board thing. The offense needs to start working together as a team, and looking out for each other more. That’s what good teams and good units do. We need to make those plays, period. Whether it’s a better throw or catch, we have to make them. There were plays available to us in yesterday’s game that would have greatly affected the outcome that we did not make. ”

ON THE PLAY OF RYAN O’CALLAGHAN IN HIS FIRST START AT RIGHT TACKLE

“I think our right tackle yesterday was a bright spot. I kind of like that guy. He competed. He wasn’t perfect. He was going against some pretty good competition. He showed some signs that he might want to stick around.”

ON JAMAAL CHARLES FUMBLING THE OPENING KICKOFF

We have talked about margin of error. We can’t do things like that against a good football team. Generally that will get you beat. I feel like we rebounded from it … from a momentum, feel and enthusiasm that hurt you. That was a critical mistake in the game.”

ON HOW HE CAN KEEP THE TEAM FROM IMPLODING FROM DISAPPOINTMENT

“That’s coaching. We are zero and zero as far as I’m concerned. That’s what we have to do as a team. We’ve got to understand that the second quarter of the season begins today. That’s the only way we can think. That’s the way our team is going to think and that’s how we are going to prepare. Our No. 1 goal right now is to beat the Dallas Cowboys. That’s it. Period.”

    You forgot this gem

Q: You broke out a new kind of nickel defense yesterday with McGraw playing linebacker and Belcher out there. Was that part of the game plan or something we’ll see again?

HALEY: “That’s what I like about you Bob. You are sharp and see all that stuff. In an effort to get better without giving any game plan secrets away, we thought it was something that could help us. At times it did. But I thought there were enough things defensively to be encouraged about against a pretty good darn offense.”

Yea good reporting Bob. We got a good shot to get this one against Dallas Sunday. I originally thought it would be the Redskins. But Cowboys passing game is dink and dunk with no explosion without TO. They can run the ball but our rush defense has dramatically improved compared to last yr. If i was a betting man I think I would cash in on this bet in Vegas. I’m sure Dallas will be the favorite. They will come in here all big headed looking at our record. This game is going to be similar to the Broncos game last yr. The first one. Where they’re going to come in here on their high horse and get shocked.

Dallas is not the powerhouse Eagles and Giants are. They’re one dimentional now w/o TO. And Romo is going to give Flowers and company some opportunities for some turnovers.

I think he’ll be much better with less hats to juggle. Not retaining Chan even if he wasn’t playcalling was a mistake.

i was impressed with O’callahan ysterday also. Every time I watched him, he had his man stoned, and it looked like he was never out of position. At 4 games, we should start to come together a little bit more in the line and QB to WR. Jarred Page had a horrible game. 4 separate times he came screaming in out of control, didn’t break down and got left grabbing air. He was the culprit on the long WR screen for a TD when he missed the tackle at the point of attack. This on top of his break (fall) down last week that allowed the huge pass play TD for the Eagles that broke our backs. Not good. He’s got to be more solid on the back end.
