Haley Says Weis Hasn’t Been Contacted
From the Truman Sports Complex
Charlie Weis is out as head coach at Notre Dame and the rumor grapevine has bubbled for days that his next job may be as offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.
If there has been contact with Weis by the Chiefs organization, that’s news to head coach Todd Haley.
“I can say with a clear conscious that there has been no contact,” Haley said Monday afternoon. “I’ve had no contact. Unless it’s something I don’t know about, the focus in this building is putting this team in the best possible position to succeed each week. As far as staff goes, that would be something I would have to make the decision about.”
There’s no question that Haley knows Weis.
“I shared an 8′ x 8′ office in New York (Jets) with Charlie,” Haley said. “I know Charlie about as up close and personal as you can know him.”
Haley and Weis were together as part of Bill Parcells coaching staff with the New York Jets for three seasons (1997-99). From there, Weis went to New England with Bill Belichick, while Haley went to Chicago, then Dallas, Arizona and this year with the Chiefs.
And Haley made it clear that he plans to hire an offensive coordinator, and the decision on why and when will be his, just as it was his decision to fire Chan Gailey before the start of the regular season.
“This is just from experience, if you can have that situation (coach and coordinator) it’s the ideal situation,” Haley said. “It’s the way I believe you can be most efficient if you have the right people in place.
“We’ve already been through the reasons I did what we did (firing Gailey.) It’s still the right thing to have done at the time for this team and this offense. At the end of the year, will be the time to evaluate.
“I believe in my heart of hearts that’s the way to be the most efficient: a head coach, an offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator. I don’t have any problem knowing that I could handle it and it’s the way to go. “
I think if Haley was smart he would hire Weis as OC and Romeo DC. So what if they all come from NE like Pioli, as long as they can bring to KC what they both have done before in NE. Maybe Scott should force Todd’s hand a bit on this one?
GO CHIEFS!
What are we waiting for, GET HIM ON THE PHONE, ASAP!
any OC will love to come here for Pioli, Haley, Cassel and yes…Charles…possibly one of the better 22 year old backs in the nfl
Hold on guys ! I think Weis will sit a year because of burnt out at Notre Dame.Sure I
It could be a great pick up but what if he decides to say no. And also there is another guy that will be very interested in Weis and that is Eric Mangini. His Browns offense needs a lot of help. And if you are Weis who has better upswing Matt Ca$$el or Brady Quinn. I know Team PROCESS has better weapons than the Browns in RB and WR but it may can change with free agency and the draft for the B
cont-the Browns if I was Mangini I would go after Dez Bryant in the draft and Boldin in free agency. After the season is over it would give Quinn some weapons to throw to.But anyway this is about KC not Cleveland he could help Ca$$el in so many ways And man it could help Team PROCESS to make to the next level. If Pioli and Haley can make it happen. It will get very interesting in 2010.
Expect the unexpected. I would say Mo Carthon is
at the top of Haley’s list. He may pass on Weis.
Weis and Crennel back together again. Folks its a
no brainer.
I’d rather have more FOOTBALL PLAYERS than some recycled assistant coach.
Weiss won’t go to Mangini cause Mangini will likely be fired at the end of the year also. The Browns really suck right now, and he’s done nothing to make them better.
And to answer: Who has more upside Brady Quinn or Matt Cassell… Brady Quinn has shown NOTHING at the NFL level. Cassell has shown the ability to manage a game, and win with a great supporting cast. Cassell has also shown mental toughness to keep getting up every time he gets nailed back there. Brady Quinn is just a crybaby who is pissed he didn’t get drafted in JaFatass’s place so he could make millions more to suck.
What makes everyone think that Charlie will be looking for an assistant job. There will be some HC jobs up for grabs and that may be what he wants or at least holds out for. He has stated that he does not plan to sit out a year.
Haley should have the final say on this one. It would not do the Chiefs one bit of good if Haley cannot work with Weiss. I have a feeling there are a lot of guys that Haley would have trouble working with.
Right now…. I am willing to offer Charlie… an unlimited supply of Red ManBras…or “BROS” and and 10 Chief’s sideline”tummy tables” if he will be our next OC!! Go Chiefs!!
I’d love to see Weis here IF its a good situation for both he & Haley. I wonder how much of Haley’s playbook & concepts are the same or similar to Weis’? The two may have a great relationship, but differ on offensive philosophy to a point that it wouldn’t work. If Haley didn’t want him, I think it would be for something along these lines…not that he wasn’t a good coach or play caller. Remember…Parcells wasn’t all that aggressive offensively & Weis was his coordinator. Haley is aggressive. The question may be: is Weis really kind of conservative, or was he that way because Parcells wanted it that way?
