Up & Down Chiefs Take Big Fall In San Diego

Todd Haley has said it dozens of times since he was named the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. He does not want yo-yo players. He does not want a yo-yo team.

Whether he likes it or not – and he does not – Haley has a yo-yo team on a roller coaster right now. They showed that again on Sunday in San Diego where they were drubbed by the Chargers 43-14.

Coming off last week’s victory against Pittsburgh in overtime, a performance like the one the Chiefs gave at Qualcomm Stadium appeared to be behind them. But if a two-game winning streak was a step forward, turning the ball over four times was two steps backwards.

“They beat us in every phase; you’ve got to give them credit,” FS Jon McGraw said of the Chargers. “It’s frustrating not being able to build on what we did last week.”

At this point, forget about building on what happened last week against the Steelers. The now 3-8 Chiefs showed just how far behind the AFC West’s best team they are right now. It’s not a distance measured in yards; more like miles and miles to go.

But as they always do, there was plenty of write and talk about. Here’s the package for this week:

that was a brutal game to be at…

we just got our butts kicked…

I will say, charles in person is the fastest player ive ever seen, I should say, has the most acceleration and pure speed where any daylight and the guy is GONE…then he makes that catch up the sidelines…at TWENTY TWO….he and flowers are literally this entire team not including our Punter.

After a week of higher hopes after the Steelers game…it was back to reality. Damnit.

Team Process and us fans have gotten a reality check today .This football team got taken to the shed an good old fashion ass kicking! Why? Please tell me why did we play dink and doink with the offense. There was absolutely no taking chances downfield. You could have had Jamal Charles played as a wide out to throw to or possibly a decoy to open up for Chambers and Wade deep. And Rudy Stiffasahanger playing at center this guy and Mike Myblocking is Off Goff are the weak link to this offensive line problems. Now I know Goff did not played this game . But I am talking about when he did play. I think Wade Smith played today and did just as bad. Matt Ca$$el looked like a deer in headlights he has no confidence and aggression when it comes to leading the offense on the field. His throws were once again underthrown and overthrown. My god dude !You cannot throw to your guys in stride as they are running. So far this organization and the fans feel shortchange at least I do when it comes to Ca$$el. To you cocreator and head coach of the PROCESS if you do not want your QB killed please put in your best blocker one of your no hands tightends in the backfield to block maybe just maybe we can go deep more often . My hats go off to Ron Rivera what I saw today with the disguise blitzes he came with. Did you take notes Pendergrast? Thats how defensive coordinator does things mixes things up confuse things. Old man Brown and Special teamer McGraw got schooled today. I am pissed off today but its just a game but I had to let out my frustrations. Both Denver games look like losses and Buffalo and Cleveland looks like maybes.

This would have been a game if not for those dumb turnovers. I’m not saying the Chiefs would have won…it just would have been competitive at least. Again as mentioned in another story….this was NOT a trap game. That’s just a silly idea. The Chiefs are not good enough to have anything called a trap game. I just hope the Chiefs can trap the Broncos this next game. They do that and I’ll be happy.

The picture says it all: Our QB is on the ground and our center is wiping the tears from his eyes.

This team may have a better record than last years but it is a worse team and not nearly as competitive at this point. Hopefully these guys can play inspired at home for the rest of the season. Also I hope that this regime is learning something from all of the experimentation this season and if they are we can get better.

Cassel is a good QB, he is not and will never be a top 5 in the league QB however.

Pioli’s first draft is not good. He found a kicker with his last pick which we needed but that is about all we got from this draft. I am still mad that he did not take the big Tackle or Curry with his first pick. These guys will be fixtures with the teams that took them and I am not sure we got a player that will stick.

I like Haley for the most part. I am not sure if he can get it done though.

Who was supposed to be covering the Charger TE in this game? I could have completed 5-6 passes to him! This was about as ugly a game as we’ve seen all season, make that for the past 10 seasons.

I agree with True R&G’s views relating to Pioli’s first draft. TJack94 was a huge reach based on the ego of the picker or so it would seem. LT Monroe was sitting there and should have been the choice but that’s all been done and said.

All I’ve seen out of this 2009 team is one that’s treading water, maintaining the bottom feeder status and one that I’m not so sure is any better than the 2008 Herm version. In fact, with all the guys gone from that squad who have been productive with their new teams, it might be worse. NOT the direction we had in mind.

So, where to go from here? Right now, I’d as soon trade the entire bunch to St Louis for their players.

  • November 30, 2009  - Harold C. says:

St’ Louis? 1-10 St’ Louis???????? That’s why I’m glad you are not in charge.

  • November 30, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Whatever they do in pratice does not thanslate to an event in front of a crowd of fans . They say they are having a good pratice and show up and throw a pass to Brad Cottum & he’s trotting across the field and the ball bounces off him- like he diden’t have a CLUE what they were doing .
I’m supprized they rembered to put their pant’s on & both shoe’s .
Need to film this and call it the ” Laurel & Hardey Sunday Outting “

Only problem with that is…I find Laurel and Hardy amusing. However, I did NOT find any humor in the ass kickin’ the Chargers gave us. For the second time this year, no less.

I guess I have a diff opinion than most of you.

IMO, our defense couldnt stop the charges, and for the most part here lately, no one can.

I felt our offense did move the ball pretty well, not just 3 and out-3 and out-3 and out, ect.

I agree with Harold C, if we didnt have the turnovers, we would have been in this game. But we werent and we did turn the ball over, but charges didnt beat us atleast, but we beat us.

Its a process as they say, and eventhough the score doesnt look like it, we are getting better!!

“but charges didnt beat us atleast, but we beat us.”

Exactly. And that’s what pisses me off the most. At this point in the season, this team should be well past that kind of crap. It’s one thing to get beat by a better team. It’s something else entirely to play like you want to end up on a “gag reel” or the “football follies”. Cassel’s fumble was absolutely embarassing. And Niswanger? I won’t even go there.

  • November 30, 2009  - gorillafan says:

    Mad Chief

    yes,
cassel fumble was bad, and rudy was bad as well. the int wasnt horrible and charles was just trying to make a play and didnt secure the ball. not makin excuses by any means, but it wasnt like we had bad penalties, like holding and false starts the entire game, 3 and out, bad third down conversions, ect . YES we did beat ourselves, but IMO it was more just one scenario, turnovers. NOT multiple issues like we were having. We are moving the ball Much better, third down conversions is Much better, the running games seens to be getting Much better, the penalties is gettig Much better ect…

I just saying we had turnovers, but we were still moving the ball and we would have been competative. Atleast the offense is getting better and just not inept like earlier this season.

  • November 30, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    gorillafan,

You’re a good man for seeing some positives in a game that we lost by 30 points. I commend you on that.

  • November 30, 2009  - gorillafan says:

    yeah, its a stretch!!

This was just a Comedie of Errors. It happens to every team once in a while, Sunday was the Chiefs day. Hopefully, HC Haley will divide the tape to show each player his errors and throw the rest away.

I imagine Pittsburg felt the same way two weeks ago. The better team won (who thought the Chiefs were better than the Chargers, anyway??), so what. I hate to say it, this is part of the process and we need patience. After the game, Haley had hoped for some baby steps toward the future but the team gave itself no chance from the get go.

Did notice Charles cannot carry the KR and RB every time the Chiefs have the ball. Smith is still banged up and Savage is inactive, NO RBs LEFT and I blame Haley for not looking on the street for a healthy body to go into the game with. Also Studebaker disappeared after a great first game, Nutz was flat out a stinker at C, and my personal all star T. Jackson contributed an “off-sides” call and nothing else after 9 games (what a great 1st round pick, is he still learning?, what??).

Still we need to just forget this mess and see if the team can rebound next sunday and at a minimum put out a competitive effort if not a win.

Yea ; I told my wife , half way through the 2nd Q. that the Chiefs were trying to foolem and SD would soon start acting real stupid also , but they did’nt seem catch on . See how dumd those guys are in SD , are .
They REALLY need to work on that ….

What a bunch dumb shilt’s , maybe Denver will get it wright
    rite
    rithg
    reit—-oh well

  • November 30, 2009  - colby says:

I will say one thing about this game, before we started turning the ball over like a bunch of clowns, we were moving that ball. The 91 yard TD drive was as impressive as our offense has looked all year. Our D forced 2 and outs on SD’s first two possessions but lost their passion once they were defending a short field all day. If they can play the way they did early in the game for an entire game, they can beat Denver on Sunday.

This will be a new test for Haley. Rallying the troops after they were brought back down to earth.

  • November 30, 2009  - el cid says:

colby, of course, the Chiefs “can” beat Denver sunday but I am not sure they are “ready” to do so. Charles while gifted as a RB, fumbles and has no backup for what has become a meaningless season, seems like a terrible waste of talent. We have no KR or PR except for Charles. I have come to believe Chambers is a better WR than Bowe, so where does that leave us. Pendergast’s defense did a job against Pitts. but it was giving up almost 400 yds against everyone else.
I am not sure this team is ready (much less) talented enough to win against anyone. I thought a corner was turned against Pitt but against SD it was the same old thing, mistakes when you cannot have one, and defense without a defense. Even Spec teams suffered with Lawrence replacing Charles. I just do not know.

  • November 30, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

    colby— Das right
But maybe it’s Matt ,,, he just did’nt get a grip on that game >
Brodie was getting with it in his throwing game & does have a stronger arm than Matt .
That was the last time he played when Matt got hurt . A little Rotation ?

  • November 30, 2009  - alex k says:

ok…except charles CAN do both, he DID do both against pitt…they rested him because hes become a barry sanders looking runner…so lawrence was brought up, haley DID have that extra body, as for RB’s, he added castille, not a RB but more of a blocking guy to replace the horrid mike cox.

  • November 30, 2009  - gorillafan says:

    jim says,
    A little Rotation?

GOD help us if they ever do something that stupid. Brodie has not got it done ever in his nfl carrier and actually didnt in college either. Brodie hasnt won a game, he gets injured all the time, let it go!!!!!!!

  • November 30, 2009  - el cid says:

    different thought:

    ND fired Charlie Weiss today.
IF HC Haley wants rid of OC duties
IF Haley wants Weiss to fill those duties
IF Weiss wants to be the OC for the Chiefs
    …..
Then because the season is one giant training camp why not hire him now, today. Let him experiment with the offensive players he has the rest of the season and get ready for the 2010 draft and free agency periods. There are lots of “IFs” but might help for 2010.

el cid—- They are doing that somewhere else & using him upstairs , for the rest of the season .
