Monday Morning Cup O’Chiefs

Todd Haley was frustrated at the conclusion of the Chiefs three-day rookie mini-camp.

You see, Haley wants his football to do everything on the field with three ideas in mind: hard, fast and efficient.

That doesn’t make him any different than most coaches, although apparently he has a different definition of fast than many guys running football programs.

When he means fast, he means fast. All during the time practice sessions were open to the media over the weekend, Haley and his coaching staff stressed moving fast and quick, no dawdling. Whether it was No. 1 draft choice Tyson Jackson (right) or the tryout players hoping for a contract.

But Haley confessed after the camp ended on Sunday that he was frustrated because he had to slow down things because he had only 33 players available.

“We slowed the pace down and did things different than how we’re normally going to do it which is frustrating as a coach because you want to show them the way you want to practice,” Haley said. “But we were very clear with them that we made some adjustments so we could get through practice.”

That means Haley drove home the point that the pace of these workouts wasn’t what he was looking for and wasn’t what he would settle for once the team gets back on the field come the start of OTA sessions on May 18.

“We’re going to be a fast-paced group that gets out there and practices hard and fast and efficiently,” Haley promised. “We only had three receivers in this camp, so if we were in any multiple receiver groups those guys were going every route and they weren’t in the condition that they had to be to be able to function. It’s frustrating because you want to show these new guys how you’re going to do it and what’s expected of them.”

The veterans got a taste of things back during their mini-camp several weeks ago. They’ll taste more and more of it during the OTAs that begin next week. Still ahead is a three-day, mandatory mini-camp where Haley’s foot will not come off the gas pedal because he’ll have 70-plus players available to him.

“What I’m preaching is there is not going to be a lot of gray area around here,” Haley said. “We’re going to tell them what we want done and how we want it done. Then we hold them accountable to that. That’s part of coaching.” It didn’t take rookies like CB Donald Washington long to figure out the lay of the landscape.

“We need to get used to doing things the way the Chiefs do it,” Washington said. “We have to get out of the old habits and get used to doing the new things. With a different head coach there are different things he likes to do. It all boils down to doing what is right. At Ohio State you had to do things that were right under Coach (Jim) Tressel and here you have to do things that are right under Coach Haley.”

WR Quinten Lawrence learned things the hard way. Haley stresses to his team that when there’s a turnover, everybody goes after the football to make the tackle. Just like when the Chiefs defense gets a turnover, everybody becomes a blocker. During Sunday’s workout, Lawrence bobbled a pass in traffic that was picked off by the Chiefs defense. On the field, 21 players reacted as they should to the turnover, whether on offense or defense. Lawrence did not and he soon heard about it from the head coach. There was no gray area in his words.

“You get players, whether they’re free agents, draft picks, or from other teams, through trades, and you have to assimilate those guys into how you want things done on a full-time basis,” Haley said.

That’s one thing that got done during rookie mini-camp.

UPDATE ON THE CHIEFS QUARTERBACK SITUATION

Drew Tate and Chase Patton worked as tryout quarterbacks for the Chiefs during the mini-camp. Haley said a decision would be made fairly quickly whether to sign either one or any of the tryout players who were in for the weekend.

The Chiefs have four quarterbacks on the roster right now and would likely take that quartet to training camp without any additional arms. The wildcard is Brodie Croyle, who is recovering from the knee injury he suffered last year. Haley said the Chiefs “were hoping that he’ll (Croyle) be ready before camp.”

“I thought they came in and competed well and picked up the system,” Haley said of Tate and Patton. “They enabled us to get through practice.

“Again, we’re keeping all options open and we’ll talk about these guys who were in here this weekend and anybody else who’s available or who comes available.”

GONZO GETS TO KNOW ALL THE BOYS IN THE A-T-L

The Atlanta Falcons had their mandatory mini-camp over the weekend and new tight end Tony Gonzalez got a chance to work with his new teammates.

Not that Tony did a lot of work. He took part in individual drills at tight end, but did not participate in any of the team work. Nothing new there; that’s been the off-season routine for the tight end over the last few years with the Chiefs as well.

That didn’t keep the Falcons from celebrating their new man.

“It’s big for us to pick up Tony,” said QB Matt Ryan. “He’s one of the greatest players of all time, so (adding) him to your team helps you improve. He’s done a great job since he’s been here the last couple of weeks, working hard in the weight room. I’ve been very impressed.”

Gonzalez has said he believes Atlanta has a chance to become an offensive powerhouse with Ryan, running back Michael Turner and receiver Roddy White, who were first-time Pro Bowl invitees.

Turner thinks Gonzalez will help him tremendously.

“They have to play us honest,” Turner said. “We are not just a one-dimensional team. We can use the middle of the field more. Line him out wide. We can create some mismatches out there.”

Atlanta’s top tight end in ‘08 was Justin Peele, with 15 passes for 159 yards and two TDs.

“We were looking for a vertical, pass-catching tight end, (but he was) going to have to be able to block,” Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey said. “That’s been the history of this offense. You have to be able to block. He can, and that’s why he’s here and maybe some others aren’t. He has that ability to block the point and be effective for us in the run game. Obviously his passing talents speak for themselves as a receiver. We feel he’s a complete package.”

Gonzalez isn’t quite comfortable yet, as he learns a new offense, his third in three years.

“I can’t say I like it because I’m not as comfortable as it could be, but that just comes with experience from coming out here and working it,” Gonzalez said. “Yeah, I’m going to mess up some plays. I might be a little hesitant at times, but once it comes together then I’ll start getting back to my old form.”

Gonzalez liked what he saw from his new young quarterback.

“He’s very good,” Gonzalez said. “That’s one thing that stood out was how accurate he is. How much of a leader he is in the huddle. He commands attention when he gets into the huddle, and that’s indicative of a great player and a great leader. It’s fun to be playing with a guy like that. I’m looking forward to it.”

SIGNINGS & MOVEMENT AROUND THE LEAGUE

FALCONS – re-signed WR Troy Bergeron; first-round draft choice DT Peria Jerry sprained right knee during mini-camp.

GIANTS – signed TE George Wrighster (Jaguars), WR Shaun Bodiford and RB Allen Patrick (Browns).

    Thanks for the mini-camp update.

    Give em Hell Scott!

Wonder if Haley has plans of implementing some form of a “No Huddle” offense, thus the emphasis on the speed and efficiency of practices? If nothing else, this team should be in good physical condition.

I just hope they don’t loose sight of the ultimate goal, which is to teach.

    Good stuff, Author!

I’d be interested to see Bob’s views on the differences between a Herm vs Haley mini-camp. Otherwise, excellent reporting and thanks.

Wow, I’m getting tired just thinking about a Todd Haley practice! These guys are going to get worked; big time! But when the season starts, the guys who survive will be well prepared to play hard and fast.

Come on Pioli! Let’s bring in a few more good PROS and make a run at the playoffs this year, just like the goal should be EVERY year!

  • May 11, 2009  - Scott says:

I like these Hardass Haley practices. Our young guys need that. The vereran players, probably not so much. But at least we shouldn’t be losing games this year due to our players being soft and out of shape like we did last year.

    Dear Todd

Too many schemes & not enough Chiefs as twere… we feel your pain - oww - and oh, the humanity.

Appears? that you did not verify ahead of time that you’d have sufficient manpower on hand to succeed.

    Why not?

Did you not make appointments with them?

    No?

Well, this is what falls under the category of poor coaching/management skills…’flustrating’ for those who showed up & expected you to have a well thought-out plan.

Remember the players cannot do things the Chiefs way if the ‘Chiefs’ themselves haven’t a clue as to what they’re doing (cc to Scott.)

x’s & o’s to you and best of luck in ‘09…you’ll need it.

    Signed

Herm, Brian & 22 (more) guys from off the street

It was a “Rookie” mini camp. That means only rookies show up for the event. We don’t have 80 rookies on the team like last year.

I think a lot of our questions about Brian Waters will be answered during that 3 day mandatory minicamp comming up.

If Waterss comes in and is in shape and ready to help this team then we can assumehe is on baord. Anything less will be interesting.

  • May 11, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    Scott says:

    “Hey Rin”

    - yes, what is it now?

    “I was wondering”

    - I leave you to your area of expertise.

    “Do you”

    - yes, I do; those who can do, those who cannot wonder as they but wander… like you, and Todd, and Scott.

    “think the Haley/Pioli imcompetence”

    - I haven’t the ability to juxtapose my cognitive fund that far in arrears as they/theirs.

    ““crow””

    - close…that magpie duo does suggest a kinship with Heckle & Jeckle.

Some characteristics include making harsh, rapid rattling sounds, a preference for being in small parties & nervousness, epitomized by their often flying away from humans.

    “will taste the same”

    - unquestionably, as they are both cut from the same stalk - spinach. This past weekend’s Todd appetizer of foot in mouth, egg on the face and copious dollops of humble pie was an preeminent opening entree, portending the crowfest to come - home cooking, and he really cleaned his plate, with many more upside down cakes sure to follow.

    “as the”

    - world turns for the rest of humanity ‘Hecklee’ & ‘Jecklee’ remain hunkered down there in their bunker-ed same: world theirs which is evidenced by such as these:

    * If you have $5 and they have $5, they have more money than you.

    * there is no ‘ctrl’ button on their computers - they are always in control.

    * They can kill two stones with one bird.

    * They don’t wear watches - THEY decide what time it is.

    * When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Scott & Todd.

    * They don’t read books or talk to players - they stare them down until they get the info they want.

    * There is no theory of evolution - just a list of creatures Todd & Scott have allowed to live.

    * Scott has counted to infinity - twice.

    * Todd helps players realize they are cockroaches.

There are more examples but, you get the gist…

    “Herm’s the Man”

    - yes, he is STILL The Man!

    ““crow”?”

    - I’ll try not to (too much), tho I warned folks ahead of time of what the future portended & the weekend as well their earlier machinations afore have affirmed.

    “Let me know.”

    - done…you’ve just been ’served.’

    Okay…MAJORLY twisted.

Yeah, well…we’ll see. ‘Hecklee’ & ‘Jecklee’ have yet to put a team on the field for a game, so I’ll reserve my judgement. If we suck this year as bad as we did under Herm…I’ll buy you dinner. And I’LL order the “crow”.

  • May 11, 2009  - jt says:

Good retort Scott Some live in the past with very Rosie glasses . Iam beginning to see the hatred for Haley it was his insult about players off the street could win 2 games. How dare he question the great man about his work or lack of doesn’t he know who Iam . Like most people they give themselves away by their words & deeds. Now to the present Waters well get Haley’s full treatment then depending on Waters may find himself out like Franklin except for a pick .

  • May 11, 2009  - colby says:

Just ignore it guys and it goes away.

Now let’s talk about the TEAM. Haley will have a hard time getting this team over the hump if he and Pioli don’t bring in some more players to make up for the loss of Gonzalez’s production. If Bowe can improve his hands, I don’t think it’s out of the question to expect 80-85 catches from him again. Engram probably is good for around 50. Asking him to do more than that is probably a stretch at this point. Who else will catch the ball? I wouldn’t be counting on more than 40 catches combined out of LJ and Cottam. Charles may get his share and perhaps Bradley will stay healthy or Darling or Webb or Copper will really step it up this year. Perhaps Lawrence will be another Eddie Royal.

I’m not comfortable counting on this group of receivers at this time. Boldin would sure look nice in a Chiefs uniform. If Waters continues his little hissy fit by not showing up for mini camp, perhaps he is included in a trade that gets Boldin in here.

  • May 11, 2009  - anonymous says:

“Engram probably is good for around 50″

That seems a bit optimistic to me.

I do hope Cottam can become a bigger part of the passing game. He doesn’t have to match TG’s numbers, just get a couple 1st downs a game.

  • May 11, 2009  - Scott says:

    Colby,

There’s still plenty of time to add a receiver or two. Haley has worked with some excellent WR’s…so he knows what one looks like. Pioli too. So they HAVE to know what we have…more or less, anyway. And hopefully, one or two of the young guys will tear it up.

It would be cool to see Boldin here…but I doubt it will happen.

And it will certainly be interesting to see what happens with Brian Waters. Will he show up ready to work, and with the proper attitude? Or is he going to let that little “incident” end his career as a Chief? I think Haley and Pioli are waiting to see what happens, too…to be honest. They’ve really left the door open for Brian by not replacing him. Yet. We’ll know pretty soon if he’s going to walk through it.

  • May 11, 2009  - Scott says:

I doubt if Cottam, or any of our other TE’s will be asked to catch many passes. Unless Haley and Pioli are planning to break from what they’ve done in the past.

  • May 11, 2009  - Jorge says:

    Rin?

    -yes, what is it now?

    You’re talking again?

-my mouth has been vacant since the departure of my man Herm.

    Where were you?

    -in the depths of despair.

Well, I just want to remind you that you were very wrong in all of your assumptions of Herm being the man, and how he is going to stay and so on, etc, etc.

-thank you for that, I’ll crawl back to the short bus now…

No wait! You don’t have to go. Listen, it’s a new season. You have a chance to start over. You were wrong. So what. Remember, just like it’s impossible to grade a team after a draft, it’s impossible for you to know exactly how these people coach, feel, think, how players will turn out, etc, etc. It’s all a fantasy.

-fantasy?? You mean like the one I have of Herm coming back with Carl to my place, and we get drunk and oiled up, and play twister?

Uhhh….yeah….. Something like that, I…sorry Rin I don’t quite know how to answer that.
Listen, for the sake of the fans you do have, please don’t stop speaking your mind.

    -I wilt ne’er stop!

Good. Now, just control your excitement, and be patient. This group of chiefs will be different and it will take some time. But we are not going to know until the season is underway.

    -I miss Herm, Jorge.

I know Rin. I know. I miss him too. Not the way you miss him though.

-Herm’s got love for me Jorge. I call it “Herm’s Love Juice.”

Uhhh…I think there’s another word for that Rin…

-It’s so good when it hits your lips!

Alright…I think it’s time for me to go.

    -thanks for coming by.

Sure Rin. And may the force be with you.

  • May 11, 2009  - jt says:

Now on Haley the rookie as one wants to call him . Lets look at the work - was coach for a team that had been the door mate of the league forever . Not only won the NFC title but played in the Super Bowl With A wash up QB that no one wanted not even the Chiefs !!! Their DF was rated 19th what was ours in the great C.P. period . Now to Pioli took a Brady in the 6th round to Hall Of Fame career YES not by themselves as the great rin - nom want to remind us !!! What-body of work has these 2 above mentioned done, to hear them Great work ( SO ) much that they refuse to even use their own name to the pen headed remarks.

Cottam and these offensive linemen sure better figure out how to protect the QB or the IR may shorten our season. Honestly, I’m not comfortable with the WR’s or the line. I’m doubtful our line is as good as AZ’s nor that our qb’s release is as quick as Warner’s.

  • May 11, 2009  - SG says:

“I doubt if Cottam, or any of our other TE’s will be asked to catch many passes.”

Who will? The Gonzo threat covered the embarrassment that has been our offensive line. We had 3 backfield guys on IR last year - with the best ever safety valve on the roster. With him gone, one must figure that weakness becomes even more pronounced dont-cha-think?

  • May 11, 2009  - Scott says:

    SG,

Well…we’ll have to see, I guess. My only point was that neither Haley or Pioli come from backgrounds where the offense uses the TE as a receiver like we’re used to. I’m not sure KC would have been that kind of offense either these past 10 years…if we hadn’t have had a TE that could block AND be a great receiver.

I think we’ll see a lot more blocking from the TE’s under Haley…and the passing game mostly featuring the WR’s, RB’s, and FB’s.

  • May 11, 2009  - jt says:

Center to me is the ? mark the rest of the line depending on Waters could be a lot better than last year . I think Brown well start for McIntyre but that being said he started playing better by years end . I well say Pioli sure brought in a lot of TE to the mix. They must feel the same way as you. Got to go time for grand kids

  • May 11, 2009  - SG says:

“Not only won the NFC title but played in the Super Bowl With A wash up QB that no one wanted not even the Chiefs !!!”

Maybe we’re overplaying our hand a little there - is it because of the accomplishments of Haley or was it maybe this quarterback wasn’t as bad as certain members of the media and writers of this post thought/think?

  • May 11, 2009  - SG says:

    Scott-man,

Of course I gotta sling the tough questions your way…

Do you see anyone on the current roster being able to step up production to help this offense put more points on the board - or are we all still hoping that Pioli sneaks someone on board that’s not currently there?

  • May 11, 2009  - SG says:

Everyone - I’m slingin’ tough questions the past couple weeks - as if we ever get in a discussion with Raiders and Donkeys - we need to be able to have our A-Game ready about exactly how our Chiefs are knock them in the teeth!

  • May 11, 2009  - colby says:

I still think we goofed big time by drafting Jackson instead of Eugene Monroe. I like the Jags chances of doing what they want on offense. They took Monroe to play LT in round one and Britton to play RT in round 2. That’s how you build an offense! I know, defense starts up front too, but I think it’s justifiable to worry about the O line. Although I do think that Albert, Goff, and Ghiaciuc will all be solid starters. If Waters stays then that’s one less spot to worry about. I still think the receivers are the biggest weakness we have on offense right now.

  • May 11, 2009  - Scott says:

    SG says:
“Do you see anyone on the current roster being able to step up production to help this offense put more points on the board - or are we all still hoping that Pioli sneaks someone on board that’s not currently there?”

I’m hoping…BOTH. I still think our biggest problem last year was coaching. And conditioning. Maybe with what we have, and better coaching…we’ll be okay. If Waters stays…I think the O-line will be okay. Not great, mind you…but okay.

Personally, my biggest concern is our running game. Who’s going to run the damn ball? LJ? Having to count on him REALLY concerns me. Charles? Smith? Who?

But like I’ve said…Haley and Pioli are smart guys, who know a thing or two about football and talent. I’m quite sure they know our needs and weaknesses a lot better than any of us do. The question is, when and how they fill those “holes”.

    - I don’t like you either.

    “like”

    - I will not, and you can’t make me.

    “the one I have”

    - someone actually likes you? The Herm blow-up doll doesn’t count you know…

    “of”

    - mice and men, you bindle stiff.

    “Herm coming back”

    - he’ll stop by just to laugh at the folly of his pursuivant.

“with Carl to my place, and we get drunk and oiled up, and play twister?”

    - wonderful, whatever floats your…nevermind.

    “Uhhh….yeah….. Something like that, I…sorry”

    - you should be, you perverse fallow, sallow fellow.

    “Rin”

    - yes, wha- are you stupid?

“I don’t quite know how to answer that.”

    - no problem, you just did.

    “Listen”

    - not that again…give it a rest.

“for the sake of the fans you do have, please don’t stop”

    - not to worry…I’ll be here all year long.

    “speaking your mind.”

    - exactly so.

    “I wilt”

    - yeah, and you smell bad too what with all that ‘listen’ practicing you do.

    “ne’er stop!”

    - then a lonely man you shall remain.

    “Good.”

    - fine.

    “Now”

    - and forever.

    “just control”

    - try this: ohm mah-nee pah-dmee hum…

    “your excitement”

    - thank you, I do my best…you can call me Pontiac.

    “and be”

    - no, but you were close: that’s ‘Aunt Bee.’ Spend more time in TV Land.

    “patient.”

    - I try, but you’re very slow…and stupid.

    “This group of chiefs”

    - no, it’s you…stop blaming others for your short-bus comings.

    “will be different”

    - I hope so; why not start today…like right now?

“and it will take some time.”

    - more excuses.

    “But”

    - cue Pee Wee Herman from “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”: ‘Everybody has a big but…’

“we are not going to know until the season is underway.”

    - how profound…obviously you’ve considered politics, Captain.

    “I miss Herm”

    - I know you do.

    “Jorge.”

    - n o . . . I’m-

    “I know Rin. I know.”

    - then do something about it- look, I’ve got a rope right here and-

    “I miss”

    - no you won’t, I’ll help you… besides, you’ve got a thick neck & a fat head…there will be no way to miss.

    “him too”

    - yes, him too…choke off the neck & the head will follow.

“Not the way you miss him though.”

    - oh I won’t miss, I assure you…but even if I do, I’ll keep at it until you’re pulse is nil.

    “Herm’s”

    - STILL The Man, yes…he won’t be able to attend but it’s the thought that counts, and-

    “got love”

    - ain’t no mountain high enough, huh?

“for me Jorge I call it “Herm’s Love Juice.”

    - for the rest of us, we call it your obsession.

    “Uhhh”

    - that’s better done in private … better close the door so the rest of us don’t have to see you abusing yourself.

“I think there’s another word for that”

    - loneliness.

    “Rin”

    - yes, what is it now STML (Short Term Memory Loss)?

    “It’s so good”

    - how would you know?

    “when it hits your lips!”

    - personally, I prefer a big pizza pie & the moon hitting me in the eye - that’s amore to me but… different strokes for different folks, George… as you will.

“Alright…I think it’s time for me to go.”

    - alright, we’ll just fasten this rope around your neck, snug it up a bit and-

    “thanks for coming by.”

    - my pleasure, and happy landings.

    “Sure Rin.”

    - au revoir.

“And may the force be with you.”

    - obey the penal codes.

Well seeing some nice discussions going today. I have to agree if Waters shows up to play our line should be ok I just hope B.Rich has made the step to start RT just not sure he is there yet. But with what we have he has the most potential. We do still need some good back ups also so I’d like to see another couple O-Line guys added before camp to compete. Also guys not saying he will, but keep an eye on the kid Javarris Williams he could be a diamond in the rough. I know your looking for WR’s but this is a big fast kid at RB. Also like the tempo of practice glad to hear the coach is not happy. If you get used to a fast pace when you get out on Sunday it will start to slow down thus less mistakes, your not trying to play catch up during a game.

Hey rin tin tin, could you shorten that drivel up a bit. It makes it tough to scroll past your comments to see what the non-moronic people have to say. Thanks.

    “Hey rin tin tin”

    - yes, what is it now?

“could you shorten that drivel up a bit.”

    - I already leveled him…he won’t be back anytime soon.

“It makes it tough to scroll past”

    - now now, calling him ‘it’ is uncalled for. That you suffered George to get to manna mine within-

    “your comments”

    - yes, ‘my comments’ - is indeed a tribute to the narrative panache mine. Danke - you’re continued rapt attention is much appreciated.

“to see what the non-moronic people have to say.”

    - would be, outside mine & Bob’s commentary - to find a pattern in pi…fat chance.

    “Thanks.”

    - you’re welcome.

When is the 1st MANDATORY OTA? If it’s May 18th and Waters AND/OR Vrabel aren’t here, we’ll have our answer, and they’ll both be gone sooner rather than later. Which is fine with me. We need more 2010 draft choices and less older players, so Pioli can do his thing in the next draft, and both those guys are on their last legs.
As for receptions, I think it’ll break down something like this:
    Bowe 85
    Bradley 60
    Cottom 40
    LJ 35
    Engram 30
    Charles 30
    Others 30

Hey Bob you need to find Rin’s ip address and ban it. Last time I go to your site.

    Aaron

    Bye…

    Bob

If Aaron decides to return, ban him, for he is vexing my spirit.

Good to hear Haley is pushing the guys to practice perfection. Love a guy who pushes his players to strive for perfection. This team should make a strong push for a AFC west title this year. Thanks for the update Bob.
