Practice report 10/1 Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

QB Matt Cassel says the Chiefs 0-3 record to start the season is not an indication of what the team can be.

“We are not a bad football team,” Cassel said after Thursday’s practice. “We are just making dumb decisions out there and the result is bad outcomes. We are three games into the season, so it’s not time to hit the panic button. We just have to keep pushing forward,  eliminate our mistakes, the penalties and the bad football and we will immediately get better.

“If we change that, the wins will come.”

All hands were dressed and taking part in Thursday’s practice. WR Dwayne Bowe was a limited participant in the session. In position work with the wide receivers Bowe ran routes, but did so gingerly and with no explosion on that injured right hamstring. When the receivers went over to work against the defensive backs, Bowe sat out the drill. At one point he changed the shoes he was wearing on the grass field that was moist from early morning rain.

“He was out there, so he’s better than yesterday,”  Todd Haley said of Bowe. “We are going to be cautious with the injury. We’ll see what he can do (Friday).”

The only other name on the practice-injury report was ILB Derrick Johnson, who was a full  participant in the work as he recovers from the groin injury that kept him out of last Sunday’s game.

So far Cassel says he’s  enjoyed working with new TE Leonard Pope.

“”He’s a big physical guy,” said Cassel. “He’s got a great physical presence about himself and he was in Todd’s (Haley) system last year in Arizona so hopefully we can get him worked in quickly.”

Cassel said the New York Giants defense the Chiefs have been preparing for this week looks very familiar.

“They are very similar style to the blitz-zone schemes we saw with Philadelphia last week,” said Cassel. “We have to do a great job of handling the rush up front and we are going to have to beat man coverage on the outside.”

The Giants are the NFL’s best team on the road, having won 14 of their last 18 games played away from Giants Stadium.

“They obviously have been very good on the road,” Haley said. “They are a well coached team, they play smart football and they don’t often beat themselves. We need to bring our A game on Sunday.”

Rin in a Rather Dan’s mugger context: “what ’s the frequency Gretzland?” Are we in covert or overt mode here…we shall see – or naught.

    “had”

    - yes…and the chiefs-

    - that’s right…what were they doing?

    “outside for their Thursday practice.”

    - this in contrast to their having stayed inside the lockerroom football game Philly last Sunday.

    “And”

    - ‘and’, Rin wonders as He wanders Gretzland, ‘what were the chiefs up to today’? Anyone? Anyone? Gretz? Bob Gretz?

“he had all hands dressed and taking part in the work.”

    - thank you…so then was sporting mittens as he tried a softer, gentler approach in lieu an disastrous 0-6 result to date. Oh, and Bowe – did he know anything today?

“Bowe ran routes with the receivers, but did so gingerly and with no explosion.”

“An update is coming after practice.”

    - look forward to it!

you should shave 10 just for considering it, let alone actually doing it

    LOL! Excellent point, gorillafan.

So, I’m down by 20 for one momentary lapse of reason. I must be more careful.

Does anyone wonder how much time the self-proclaimed “greatest blogger in all creation” spends on his posts?

Think of the lives that could be saved if we could harness that energy into curing cancer or AIDS.

It is a bad team but I think in the off season if they can come up with O-line help (and it will be available) and get a C,RT,RG and a pass rusher they could win 7-8 games next year. Once you get to 500 you are a few tweaks away from playoff contention.

It is good to be an positive about next year especially when we have only played 3 games. We do we fans do about the next 13, just sit and wait, ok by me.

Actually, Cassel is right. I went back and watched the Eagles game again, and it is true that the biggest problem the team has is itself. Except for the drives they scored on, every single time they got something going offensively it got stalled by a penalty or miscue of some kind. It’s been the same theme through the first three games. I’ve watched all of them multiple times. It goes for the defense, too. It’s its own worst enemy.

Man, if this team can just start getting out of it’s own way, it could really do some damage. I’m sure some of it is the newness of every aspect of the team. New management, new coaches, new players, young team. Still, some of it has to be on the coaches and the players just not getting it done. Until they can figure that out, they’ll just keep shooting themselves in the foot.

This team has many weakness and very few strengths.
The mark of an up and coming team is it ability to
turn weaknesses into strengths. And to use the
weaknesses of the opposing team to their own advan
tage. They haven’t got that far yet but they’re
heading in the right direction. Eliminating the
    penalties is a good start.
