Practice Report 10/14 Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

The mystery of No. 55 has been solved and it’s bad news for RB Jackie Battle.

A shoulder injury sent Battle to the injured-reserve list on Wednesday, ending his season after five games. Head coach Todd Haley said the team expects Battle will need surgery on the injury.

Taking his spot on the active roster on Wednesday was the unknown No. 55 who was practicing with the team: OLB Justin Rogers. At 6-4, 246 pounds, Rogers is in his third NFL season. He broke into the league with the right pedigree to get picked up by the Chiefs, as he was a sixth-round selection in the 2007 NFL Draft by … the New England Patriots.

Rogers was released after his rookie training camp, but claimed on waivers by the Cowboys. He played in 31 games over the last two seasons,  with three tackles on defense and 34 in the kicking game. Special teams is obviously where he’ll get the chance to make his first impressions with the Chiefs.

Battle had carried the ball seven times for 21 yards and caught two  passes for minus-three yards. But he was leading the team with six tackles on special teams and the second-year RB was on all four major kicking game units.

The move with Battle opens the door to a quick trip back to the active roster for RB Kolby Smith. He’s currently on the PUP List because of the knee injury he suffered last year. Starting next week, Smith can begin practicing and the team would then have a three-week window to make a decision on his future. The Chiefs have indicated they think Smith is ready to play.

The possibility of LT Branden Albert playing this Sunday against Washington doesn’t sound good based on the comments of Haley after Wednesday’s practice.

“He’s got a tough road ahead of him,” Haley said of Albert. “But he’s committed to doing everything he can to get back, so I wouldn’t bet against him.”

During Wednesday’s practice Wade Smith, Ikechuku Ndukwe and Barry Richardson worked at left tackle. Richardson is on the practice squad, so any chance he has of playing against the Redskins would force another roster move.

FS Jarrad Page did not practice because of a shoulder injury and there’s a chance he may not be available for Sunday’s game. Jon McGraw was working with the No. 1 defense at the position.

G Andy Alleman also sat out practice after suffering neck/back spasms Wednesday morning. He’s expected to be back to work on Thursday.

Maybe DJ wore #55, so coach would think he was a new guy and could earn some playing time based on merit.

How did Jarrad Page hurt his shoulder? He hasn’t hit anyone since he’s been a Chief. Must of have hit the ground after an attempted (and missed) arm tackle.

Looney says that the new player is LB Justin Rogers and Jackie Battle was probably the player cut.

    College career
Rogers played at defensive end for Southern Methodist University. During his 54-game career he had a total of 123 tackles, 28 for a loss (83 solo tackles, 23 of which were for a loss). He also recorded 19.5 career sacks, five forced fumbles, and one blocked kick.

    Professional career
    New England Patriots
Rogers became the first Mustang drafted by an NFL team since Kevin Garrett in 2003 when he was drafted by the New England Patriots. He was waived by the Patriots just before the start of the 2007 season.

    Dallas Cowboys
Rogers was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys on September 2, 2007. He played in all 16 games for the Cowboys as a rookie, primarily on special teams. He finished the season with 16 special teams tackles as well as three tackles on defense.

Rogers played in 15 games for the Cowboys in 2008, finishing third on the team with 18 special teams tackles.

After missing time in 2009 training camp with tendinitis in his knee, Rogers was waived/injured by the Cowboys on August 2 and subsequently reverted to injured reserve. On August 27, 2009 Justin Rogers was released from the Dallas Cowboys.

Interesting. But if Haley thinks Savage is better than Battle…then why does Savage keep ending up deactivated on game day?

first off, DJ has had YEARS, YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRS to do something….he hasnt…I have a DJ Jersey, and was STOKED when we took him in the draft, but even being a former DJ homer, I cant say hes a better player than even demorrio williams….its pretty darn even, yes dj can make big plays, but at the expense of giving up big plays.

if kolby can come back strong, great, mix him with charles, I just dont agree with dumping battle instead of savage, i would bench LJ and use a Smith/Charles/Battle rotation…cant be worse than 2.0 ypc

I cant wait till Haley and Pioli trade Dorsey and DJ and get 2 read u guys post about how they are playing well elsewhere! I remember a few years back how every1 said Jared Allen was overrated,he couldnt play the run and was a drunk…i bet most of u would take all those qualities now huh?

Whoa! I don’t remember that. I don’t know of anyone who didn’t think trading Jarad Allen was a BIG mistake. That was Peterson and Edwards that did that, anyway. Besides, neither DJ or Dorsey have played anywhere in the neighborhood of how good Jarad played for the Chiefs.

Dorsey is not going anywhere .
DJ , —-if he though this team was going to light up , all of a sudden he would be out there doing every thing right , wanta BET ?

I just saw that Battle was placed on IR and not cut. It is some type of shoulder injury. I wonder if adding Rogers might be a prelude to trading DJ. I know there was an opening for Rogers with Battle being put on IR, but it still makes you wonder. They are also short on the O- line with Albert injured.

first who in the hell is Justin Rogers?? secondly, I didn’t want Jared to go, but at the same time if he was going to be getting DUI’s and suspended every season for them I wouldn’t want to have him signed long term either, but he seemed to have calm down on the drinking thing in Minnesota…

I wonder how well DJ and Dorsey will play on some other teams, im sure I would be mad to see them playing elsewhere since they probably would be doing alright, sorta like Sims and Siavi have kinda figured it out…

secondly, I didn’t want Jared to go but at the same time I didn’t want him to have a long term contract and being suspended for 4 games or more every year for DUI’s. It seems though that he has calmed it down alot in Minnesota.

I wonder how well they (DJ & Dorsey) on other teams? They would probably turn out like a few other linemen and linebackers we have let go in the past, i.e., Kawika, Fujita, Siavi, Sims…

  • October 14, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Well if it’s the same guy I looked up in two years with the Cowboys he has 34 tackles in 31 games…

Rogers is a Special Teams player. I don’t think he was signed to rock the Chiefs LB world…just mainly to take Battle’s place on ST.

  • October 14, 2009  - Stiv says:

Siavi & Simms are barely holding on to jobs right now, thinking they would be making an impact for the Chiefs if still around is laughable.

DJ has done little but under achieve since being drafted. The guy will make a good play occasionally but spends way too much time sleep walking through games. Haley isn’t down on the guy for no reason, DJ needs to get his butt in gear and prove himself.

  • October 14, 2009  - el cid says:

Haley will keep who he wants and play who he wants, it is a free year for him, mistakes and all the assorted warts. By 2010 season DJ will be gone.

What is your love affairs with guys who are GONE? “I told you so” is a real cold bed partner. I guess because of Haley’s bad record so far, all you want to do is play the blame game on non Chiefs.

  • October 14, 2009  - Ludacris says:

agreed el cid. There’s a bunch of bitchy, complaining pussies on this site Who cares about who’s going or staying? Haley and Pioli know best and any attempt to analyze it is a waste of your time. Get with it “fans”! Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

    GO CHIEFS

Be here Friday around noon ,in the meantime Bob will throw some crum’s to reduce the WA-WA ,but it is getting to the level that is hard to step over .

  • October 15, 2009  - B in SC says:

Battle was one of our best special teamers so signing a competent player to replace him was important. I think Rogers fits the bill. Makes the decision on Smith easier too when he comes off of PUP.

For anyone wanting DJ in the lineup, just consider that he plays ILB so you would have to sit either Mays or Williams. I just don’t see DJ being an upgrade over either of them at this point, so he sits.

    ePauled:
“How did Jarrad Page hurt his shoulder? He hasn’t hit anyone since he’s been a Chief.” – I think there is a Giants receiver that would disagree with that. Probably where he hurt it since he led with his shoulder and not his helmet as was called.
