Practice Report 10/21 Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs got back to work Wednesday morning, showing no hangover from their first victory of the season.

“I thought today was a good tempo and had a good feel to it, from meeting and through practice,” said head coach Todd Haley. “It seemed like everybody was concentrating and ready to get to work.”

Working outside, where a few sprinkles were falling 45 minutes into the session, Haley had 51 of 53 active roster players taking part. Missing were RG Mike Goff and LT Branden Albert. Goff  was absent with permission, handling some personal matters according to Haley. He’s expected back on Thursday

Albert missed last Sunday’s victory over Washington because of a left ankle injury. He was in the rehab area and did some light jogging along with walking laps. Albert is no longer wearing a boot on the left foot. “He’s night and day from where he was,” said  Haley. “I’m hopeful from the progress he’s shown from when he had the injury until  now, he’s got a chance.”

Working with the No. 1 defense was Jon McGraw at free safety, stepping into Jarrad Page’s spot. Haley acknowledged the change, but said the position would be evaluated on a daily basis.

Taking part  in practice was RB Kolby Smith. He’s been on the Physically-Unable-To-Perform List since the start of training camp, recovering from the knee injury he suffered back on November 2, 2008 against Tampa  Bay.

The Chiefs have a three-week window where they can evaluate Smith and then make a decision on his future for the rest of the ‘09 season.

“It was great to see him out there,” Haley said of Smith. “He showed some fresh legs. He’s worked hard. There’s going to be some rust, but he had a good first day.”

Also on the field was new NT Kenny Smith, who was wearing No. 90 in the drills. “He’s a strong guy,  that’s  got some experience,” said Haley. “He’s been out for a little bit, but it looked like he was moving around pretty good today.”

New practice-squad DT Marlon Favorite was wearing No. 93.

There had been stories in the last 48 hours that the Chiefs had re-signed OLB Justin Rogers. But he’s not on the team’s 53-man roster or their practice squad. Right now, there’s no spot for him with either group.

After Wade Smith’s performance on Sunday, Goff was seen in the “free soup” line in downtown KC…

    B in SC,

LMAO! That was a good one.

Goff missing from practice? So? He’s been MIA in most of the games, too.

Just re-thinking…did we need to cut someone? I lost track with signing Rogers, then cutting him, then rumors that they re-signed him…trading Tank…bringing up Richardson from the Practice Squad…Kolby Smith…Kenny Smith…Favorite…???

Anyone know where we stand, for sure? Maybe Goff got cut?

Is anyone else concerned that Albert may have a chronic foot/ankle problem.

Isn’t this the 3rd related injury since last year.

  • October 21, 2009  - Niblick says:

I checked the Chiefs website and they now have 53 on the active roster and 8 on the practice squad. They have no openings currently. Goff is still active. He must have some type of injury. They’ll have to make a move if they want to move Kolby Smith to the active roster.

  • October 21, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

I wonder how Kolby will fit into the scheme of things. Is he just going to be another RB that never gets the ball? Because we already have several of those…and Haley seems intent on giving the ball to LJ almost exclusively.

Is it just me? It seems like if Haley would get the ball into more players hands…our Offense would be a little less predictable. Our Offense was capable of imposing their will on other teams at one time. As in, here it comes…try and stop it. But, we can’t do that anymore…although at times, it seems like that is what Haley is trying to do.

It seems to me that Haley is determined to do things his way with no flexibility. Not a bad thing if he learns from his mistakes. To date I do not see him doing that. But this is a free year so he may adjust how things are done in 2010. If not, I figure he will be out of here shortly there after.

OMG! This is becoming a Chief’s fan worst nightmare for the ‘R’ word, as in RE-BUILDING. The R is painful, tough to watch, and hard (for me) to understand.

I continue to hope that Pioli/Haley know what they’re doing.

“It seems to me that Haley is determined to do things his way with no flexibility.”

Seems that way, huh? Which is fine for practices, rules, conduct, etc. But, you can’t do that in games. Not with the talent level we have. I guess maybe he’s looking to the future? As in, we’re going to do it this way…when we actually have the talent to do it this way? We’re going to run the ball…and when we actually have an O-line and a badass RB it will be effective?

I just don’t quite get it. But then again… that’s probably why Haley is an NFL coach, and I’m not.

  • October 21, 2009  - Stiv says:

Well what do you want to do throw it every down? Even when we keep plugging away at the run our o-line can’t pass block, do you wish to see Cassel get killed?

  • October 21, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    Stiv,

No I don’t want to throw it every down. But, if we’re going to be a running team, I’d like to see a couple of the other running backs get a chance to carry the ball. Can they do better than LJ? I don’t know…but how will we ever find out if they don’t have the chance?

  • October 21, 2009  - el cid says:

Happy to announce I am totally wrong. Local media got attacked by callers for not calling out Pioli/Haley for their actions or lack of actions in player acquititions or player developement (cutting herm players in sted of coaching them up). Kietsman and his bunch said “you have to understand just how bad the team was left by carl”. Local media still hate carl and are happy to still play the blame game.

So long live the process, we get just what we deserve. Pioli/Haley get a free ride about any move they make or do not make. In 3 – 5 years we get some imaginary dynasty or we do not, it does not really matter.

  • October 21, 2009  - Tim Geary says:

Why can’t they use Wade Smith at Left Tackle, Brandon Albert At Left Guard, Brian Waters at Center, Rudy Niswanger at Right Guard, and Ryan O’Callaghan at Right Tackle?

  • October 21, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

i hope that Haley gets rid of that Quote “it’s night and day” it’s about the fifteenth thousandth time he has stated something is night and day… the thing is there is nothing different, he is injured and he isn’t playing this week.

I would hope charles or Smith gets a chance to play at some point this year, they were looking pretty good last year, this year it’s LJ… I mean watch tape from last year to this year and it’s the same with him, so why not see if it’s the same with Charles this year, and when Smith comes back let him play too, I hope they dont cut him some team out there will definately pick him up…

  • October 21, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Tim I wouldn’t move Alberts, I would move Smith inside to Guard… Smith was getting burnt last week by the end a couple times he was standing there as the end chased Cassel down…

  • October 21, 2009  - Tim Geary says:

But Left Guard is Albert’s natural playing position from Virgina.
By the way, anybody else notice both Albert and Flowers(Herm picks)each did a year stint at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia?

  • October 21, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

NO –They are carring two many T-End’s , And down to three Smith’s , two Johnson’s , it’s getting close .

  • October 21, 2009  - PoopOnThis says:

Matt Cassel and Tyson Jackson will be in the same place next year, but who knows about anyone else. Haley likes Brown and Vrabel on defense, but they are too old. Same for LJ and Waters on the other side. He doesnt like good young players like DJ, Dorsey, and Page so they will be gone too. Do others like Flowers and Charles get thrown in with that group and purged from the team despite their talents? What about Bowe?

It seems that every young player that gets axed from the team is replaced by some one with absolutely zero upside. How is that rebuilding? How is that building at all?

  • October 21, 2009  - james gandolfini says:

hate to tell you this, but DJ is not a “good young player” hes an average player who in his prime…is still just that, average.

Page has been horrible the first five games of this year. I’ve made that comment at least 4 times previously. McGraw made plays and was fundamentally sound on Sunday. It makes a HUGE difference in the foundation of the defense. You can’t have safeties who play out of control and create big plays for the offense. Too many people who post on this site don’t watch the games with a critical eye, they evaluate players on original draft position and not performance. Haley is doing EXACTLY the right thing, and it will pay off in the long run. Has anyone noticed that the 2010 draft is ranked as one of the best and deepest in years and we are stockpiling picks big time. Dorsey won’t go anywhere if he continues to play a disruptive DE and not a 50 lb overweight nose tackle. Quit evaluating “talent” as athletic ability. If you can’t play sound football, all the athletic ability in the world is useless.

  • October 22, 2009  - james gandolfini says:

agreed, love the stockpiling picks…to get 2 5s for tank/thigpen, ha, hilarious if you consider moss went for a 4th(yeah yeah fire sale)

Agreed on Mcgraw, but it shows we need safety help if a journyman ST guy becomes our best safety.

and btw draft position wouldnt have anything to do with page since he was a 7th rounder not an early pick…

When Haley/Pioli got here, they surely had an old Mother Hubbard moment. Do you ever wonder if Clark Hunt or somebody else in the upper reaches of Arrowhead has a Carl Peterson doll into which they stick pins?
The Broncos are having a great year because their talent was so much higher than KC’s. Haley is doing what he can with what he has.
Sure, his confrontational style is humiliating to the players and painful to watch;maybe he will calm down.
The cameras showed a fairly happy sideline last Sunday when they finally won a game.
So far, Haley seems not to have pulled any bone headed moves that lead to a loss and he is always in pursuit of another score.
Let’s see how the rest of the season unfolds. It will at least be interesting.

So Haley hasn’t been calling all of the offensive plays?? Some of them are quite boneheaded!!
