Goff Gone-Practice Report Update 11/11

From the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs placed starting RG Mike Goff on the injured reserve list Wednesday, ending his season because of a shoulder injury.

Goff started seven of the eight games this season, after coming over as a UFA from the San Diego Chargers. The 12-year veteran had a string of 113 straight starts snapped in Jacksonville last Sunday. He appeared for one play against the Jaguars, stepping for Andy Alleman when he got dinged.

Alleman will take Goff’s spot in the starting lineup; he started there against the Jaguars. Taking Goff’s place on the active roster is LB Justin Rogers, back for a second tour with the Chiefs. Rogers was signed on October 14th, after RB Jackie Battle was sent to injured reserve. He was released on October 17th when the Chiefs promoted OT Barry Richardson from the practice squad.

“Andy is a guy with experience and we got him here for a reason,” said head coach Todd Haley. “He’s worked hard. He’s battled somethings physcially, but he’s a tough guy, that wants to play and wants to show what he is capable of. I thought he showed some positives signs (against Jacksonville.) I expect him to improve from there.”

Haley also said that Ikechuku Ndukwe would get more practice time at guard. “That’s probably his best position,” said the coach. “I feel fairly comfortable with that spot.”

Rogers is 6-4, 246 pounds and played in 31 games over the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He entered the league as a sixth-round selection of the New England Patriots in 2007 out of SMU. Rogers had 18 tackles  in the kicking game last year for the Cowboys.

The Chiefs began their week of practices in preparation for the Raiders on Veteran’s Day/Wednesday morning under sunny skies and with a shortage of linebackers.

OLB Mike Vrabel, ILB Javon Belcher and ILB David Herron were all in the rehab area as practice got under way. The Chiefs listed Herron as out of practice, and Vrabel and Belcher as limited.

Belcher at one point left Sunday’s game in Jacksonville and was helped off the field with head trauma, but he returned to play that day.  Vrabel is listed with a hip injury and Herron with a knee problem.

Dressed and on the practice field, although with limited participation was WR Chris Chambers because of a foot injury and OL Wade Smith with a sore ankle.

Haley put his team through the Wednesday practice wearing shells and shorts, something they normally do on Friday. It’s the first time this season that the mid-week practice was not in full pads.

“”In the heat, it was a physical game on both sides of the ball on Sunday,” said Haley. “It seemed like the right thing to do. I thnk we are starting to understand how it has to be done in practice, whether pads or shells. Early on when we were in shells we were awful. Everybody just stood around and held hands.”

I hate to see an injury end someone’s season. And I know Goff is a good guy and all. But I’m glad he won’t be in the Chiefs lineup anymore…because he SUCKED.

  • November 11, 2009  - el cid says:

FOR THE THIRD ATTEMPT: I would have thought the Chiefs would be searching for OL just in case of injury. I would have at least look at and possibly signed an OL with up side from other teams practice squads as opposed to the “highly in demand” Rogers.

nah kc doesnt need more depth at guard right now, they are right Ike is a guard, I love it, he and alleman need a chance at guard, see if they can be starters or not, or even backups for next year, or fill in spot starters till rooks are ready

Goff is another reach by the Pioli-Haley tandem and makes one continue to wonder about their evaluation talents. There have been exceptions, like WR Chambers most recently, and to be fair perhaps this is the best the tandem can do in fielding a team bereft of key talent at many positions.

Was the CP/Herm cupboard that bare from the 2008 roster? Were the priorities for re-stocking by P-H in the proper places and positions? Questions in continual search for answers which will CONTINUE.

“Goff is another reach by the Pioli-Haley tandem and makes one continue to wonder about their evaluation talents.”

Goff used to be a good player…with the “used to be” being the killer. I imagine Pioli was hoping to get one good/decent season out of him. It didn’t happen.

“Was the CP/Herm cupboard that bare from the 2008 roster?”

6 wins in two years? Um yeah…I’d say so.

“Were the priorities for re-stocking by P-H in the proper places and positions?”

They had to start somewhere. Obviously, there were too many things to fix in one offseason.

Good analysis Mad Chief. I’m continuing to look at some kind of rhyme or reason behind the Pioli-Haley plan which hasn’t been easy to follow thus far.

This is hard but I have to say, Todd Haley is not head coach material.
I say hire Marty S back.
    Mike martz offensive coord.
    Romeo Crennell def coord.

There’s a difference between calling plays and running a football team…high school, college, and NFL.
I bet he couldn’t coach peewee.

    ThunderChief,

Im sure scott looked at the team in depth and found out that we need all the players that we could get.

I would assume that they thought they could coach up or atleast improve the o-line some like it was.

but I think it came down to who they could get and who was available. If they cant get a fair deal on a lineman or dont think someone is worth the money they want, why do it? You WILL loose in the long run. I think they tried to address all positions the best they could this year, its just going to take another year of quality players, not just fill ins, to get this team better.

Just wait everyone, it will happen…

  • November 11, 2009  - el cid says:

Just wondering? Mad Chief – They had to start somewhere. gorillafan – they thought they could coach up or at least improve. Just when does the start begin? What player or position? Cassel, I do not think so because they surrounded him with the poorest support in the NFL. “coach up” just who have they coached up, more like “chase out” is a better phrase for the Chiefs.

I believe you will find the Chiefs, at some point in time, to treat the 09 season like one big training camp. That is a crime, fraud. Only the Chiefs are telling their fans – Patience. It does not apply in the NFL, we all know teams make transitions all the time and do not waste an entire year.

Lastly, just where are the Chiefs getting better? Not the draft picks, not the free agents, and not the leftovers from herm. Nothing is better but the prediction “the process”/

  • November 11, 2009  - el cid says:

    Tryin for the third time

Mad Chief just when will the Pioli/Haley start their rebuild? gorillafan who are they coaching up?

Looks like they are “chasing out” rather than coaching out. They have yet to make a start at the rebuild but when.

I do not see any improvement at any position except for Cassel and then they surrounded him by the poorest support in the NFL>

  • November 11, 2009  - David Henderson says:

The question I want to ask is what happened to Bowe? He was pretty good under Herm. Now he isnt hardly even a factor. Do you guys think he got worse or is Haley just not using him like he should?

  • November 11, 2009  - MDChief says:

What we have to understand is that they clearly came in with a long-term strategy. Changing coaches again would be idiotic. We would have been much better off if the old regime had stayed because all the system changes wouldn’t have occurred. I’m not saying we’d be better off long-term, but we certainly would have been better offthis year. This year is not what P-H decisions have been about. I’m not ready to go through this crap again any time soon, so there should be no further changes until they’ve had a chance to go through another two years of rebuild. Continuity wins in the NFL- always has, always will.

  • November 11, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    el cid says:

“Mad Chief just when will the Pioli/Haley start their rebuild?”

It’s a “process”. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one. But, it’s true. I hate it, too. And I’ve come to hate that word. Trust me.

The thing is, how many good free agents are clamoring to come to the powerhouse Kansas City Chiefs? I think that was a problem last offseason…and will likely be a problem again this upcoming offseason. It’s not always just about the money, like some seem to think. Good FA’s usually go to good teams, when they have a choice. They want to play where there’s a chance to win, a chance to get into the playoffs…not come to a “rebuilding” team. There are a few exceptions here and there, of course. But as a general rule, that’s the way it goes. That’s why we got stuck with a lot of leftovers and has-beens. Guys that DIDN’T have a choice. And those that didn’t make it here…where did they go? Almost all of them…home.

You have to find the right “mix” of players. And coaches for that matter. Like it or not, and believe me I don’t…it’s going to take some time.

Hey, I hated where we were going under Peterson and Edwards. It’s been stated before…but it’s very true. While we’ve been putting up with this sh*t for years now…Pioli and Haley have not. They had one offseason, and half a season. It’s just starting, for them. I really, truly believe these guys are THE guys to get this team going in the right direction. I’m just trying to be realistic about the progress…and patient with the results. I hate it. But what else can I do?

  • November 11, 2009  - el cid says:

MDChief I think you are wrong. The NFL is not about 3 years to put a team together. This year is a mess mainly because P/H could not find players and methods to succeed. That is why P/H are here to succeed. No team that I am aware of totally trashed a season for three years from now. But I would be satisfied with SMALL successes. A draft pick showing just enough to say WOW, a free agent who was a hidden gem, or simply coaching up a couple of herms guys, something to show there is forward movement. I have said it a dozen times, THIS IS A LOST SEASON AND NOBODY (repeat nobody) is better than the day P/H were hired. That is the real shame of the Chiefs in 09.

Near impossible to get on blog today, maybe I made Bob mad.

Great post el cid…..thats what I’ve been saying for a while! The coachs are terrible…..players from last year are underachieving and draft picks are looking like bust material…this is not due 2 lack of talent but horrible coaching!

I agree with most of what el cid has posted on this article.
I think those of who spend $4K on season tickets and have for years have a different point of view that the remote control fans.
This may be the worst Chiefs team I have seen in 30 years. I never thought we could improve 100% at QB and still get worse than a Herm team, but P-H has accomplished it to this point. This is the darkest lowest point and I’m afraid the tunnel has caved in.
With all of the Champion Head Coaches available in ‘10 we need to hire one and move haley to WR with strict supervsion and a seat in the press box with a razor and bar of soap.

Bottom line to all the Pioli haters that are saying he whiffed on Goff it happens. Bellichick whiffed on Joey Galloway. Signing vets are 50 50 chance sometime they have something left in the tank and sometimes they don’t.

As for both Haley/Pioli you can’t judge either guy in year 1. Pioli because he had one season to fix the AFC version of the Detroit Lions and there isn’t anyway in the world it was going to be done in one offseason. Besides veterans like Tony was tired of the rebuilding and wanted out and so was LJ. As for Haley hard to judge a guy as a head coach when he doesn’t have the talent to win with. I mean the o-line is horrible and no coaching is going to change that. So is the lack of another pass rusher, and more playmakers at receiver. Can you question his playcalling yeah sure. He’s been suspect on what he decides to do in certain situation but excusion on some of those calls made him look bad as well. However he want be calling plays next yr anyways. He’s already stated that. At the end of the day stop the whinning and give these guys a fair shake to get some more pieces in place. IF we’re 1 and 7 this time next year then you can start calling for people’s head but not in yr 1.

And to those who say hire Marty or Cowher please stop the wishful thinking its not going to happen.

  • November 11, 2009  - Josh says:

Well, I think there are sign of improvement in the midst of all the bad. The D-line for instance has improved and started playing much better ball. The big plays are normally faults of LBs or DBs. Special team play has been pretty tight this year witch is a sign of younger players catching onto the system. Jackson had one of his better games to date against Jacksonville. Chambers and Long are both promising. Cassel, save the three int game three weeks ago, has played well considering the problems on the O-line. It appears that they have only really gone after “their type of player” and slowly weed out the ones that don’t fit the mold. Look at Flowers and how he is playing. He is all over the field and they use him several different ways. I like the direction he have taken. The “process” hasn’t been the most enjoyable thing to watch, but I believe the team is going to start forming over the second half of the season and give us a real good idea of what kind of foundation we have to build on. You can’t build a team with free agents. You need a base of young “home grown” talent. Use free agency to fill the small voids rather than large ones. You don’t blow your wad the first year to try and get 8 wins. You have to find out what you really have to build on and go from there. A rookie GM with promise, a rookie head coach with promise, an owner getting his hands wet for the first time, and a quarterback only in his second year of starting with promise – these guys deserve at least a couple years before we get to critical of there decisions.10

    Where to start?

Special Team is made of players who only play special team, as not good enough to start, or players who are unsuccessful whem they play. Note record 1-7 I suggest it is the Special teams coach who is getting production from these guys.

P/H are not going anywhere. If they quit today, they would lose not only money but the impression they are something special in the NFL.

Haley does not have talen to win. Just who’s fault is that. He had to have some say in 4 TEs (two inactive every game), non roster WRs, etc. I would like to believe you realize that Goff to IR and replacing him with a LB leaves the OL short bodies. “Fair shake”, why? No other NFL franchise has ever turned the season into a training camp. Left the OL stand pat with a 65 mill QB unprotected. (another pass rusher?) the defense is giving up almost 400 yds per game and you think one more pass rusher will fix that??

My point is P/H should have their collective feet in the fire until they show positive movement. It does not make them bad guys just ineffective and I see no need to wait 3 years to call this mess, a mess.

  • November 11, 2009  - el cid says:

Besides Haley likes to run his team based on FEAR, will I play, will I be cut. Seems to me that is a fair way to treat Pioli/Haley. If they were a little fearful of their jobs and reputations, we might see an offense triying to win a game before the final 3 minutes of a game. Oh, I do not know but if Haley thought his butt would be fired, he might actually turn Cassel loose at the start of a game (Cassel says he pretty much calls his own game during desparation time in last possession). Or see if Cassel can air out the ball more than 10 yard (yes more interceptions but we could see if Cassel could do the job. Will not go thru, thanks Bob

  • November 11, 2009  - Josh says:

I think its obvious they are only going to bring in the type of player that fits their mold. They have also weeded out those that don’t fit. You can’t build a team out of free agents. You have to have a core of “home grown” talent and only use FAs to fill the small voids. This obviously can”t happen in one off season.

“so what do you think happened to Bowe, anyone?”

Tony G got traded. Plain and simple. Last year…was the ball going to be thrown to Bowe, or Tony? Or possibly…??? This year, the ball is going to be thrown to…??? Bowe is going to have to have another threat out there on the field to be successful. No way around it.

El cid, and others. The problem is, I truly believe…how many good FA’s want to come to a powerhouse like the Chiefs? I think that was a problem this past offseason…and I think it will be a problem this upcoming offseason. Good FA’s want to go to good teams. When they have a choice, that is. It’s not always about “the money”…as some people seem to think. That’s why we got leftovers and has-beens. Seriously. The guys that didn’t make it here…went where? Home, that’s where. Most of them, anyway. There are few exceptions, of course…as always. But the bottom line is, most good FA’s want to go to “contenders”…not “rebuilders”. That is a big problem for Pioli…and he’ll need to solve it, if the Chiefs are going to be successful.

It’s been pointed out before, but it is VERY true. We, as fans, have been through this sh*t for years now. But, Pioli and Haley have NOT. They’ve had one offseason and half a season to do their “thing”. It will take some time. I hate it. I hate it as much as anybody, believe me. But, I’m trying very hard to remain patient…and give these guys a chance. I hated where the Chiefs were going under Peterson and Edwards. So, I’m willing to give Pioli a chance to prove himself worthy. Am I impressed so far? Not hardly. But the thing is…he knows a lot more about football than I do. So, I’m willing to give him some time to build us a winner. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon…no matter what any of us say or think. So, I’ll try to remain positive about it…and keep telling myself that he’s the man that will get it done. What other choice do I have? Piss and moan about it every day? Sorry…I’ll pass on that.

Well said, Mad Chief! This board has no place for Chiefs haters; especially one’s that obviously can not afford their own 40 yd. line seats anymore. Besides, anyone who has survived the late `70’s and `80’s should be thick-skinned enough to handle the current situation. After all, appearing in two superbowls and than loosing until the `90’s, man that has be much worse than the two and probably three loosing season stretch the team is in now.

Late comment on Bowe. He seems to have a problem making the easy catch. It may have started as a mental thing but I believe it is developing into a physical disability. Because of it, I do not believe Haley and maybe Cassel will never be comfortable looking to him for the clutch catch. I truely believe he can recoop his career but not in KC and join the exodus to other teams.

  • November 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

I personally think that Haley never playing a down has killed alot of the players “want”, in other words players like last year played for thier HC, because they knew he played the game. The players may not have finished, but they did start. This years players dont even seem to start playing until the final 4 minutes of the games. Alot of the players that showed talent last year haven’t even showed the same progress this year, that has got to be a coaching issue or enviroment issue. I also think that if the coach is good FA’s would want to play for them. When Joe Gibbs came back into the league there were players who wanted to play for him, the same would happen with Marty Schottenhiemer coming back there would be FA’s that would want to play for him because he is a proven coach, Haley not so much!!
