Practice Report 9/24 Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

ILB Derrick Johnson said Thursday after the Chiefs  practice that he would not play this Sunday against Philadelphia.

Johnson suffered a groin injury in that final defensive series last Sunday against Oakland.  He worked in the rehab area early in Thursday’s practice during the time the session was open to the media.

“I’m not going to go,” Johnson said.

The linebacker has been bothered by hamstring and groin injuries since the first practice of training camp. It’s one of the reasons he ended up losing his starting job.

Joining Johnson in the rehab area on Thursday was WR Dwayne Bowe, who the Chiefs listed as a partial participant in Thursday’s practice. It appears to be a right knee problem but  Todd Haley would  only say Bowe “has a little something with his leg. I’m hopeful that it will clear up.”

Everybody else was available and practicing on Thursday as the Chiefs prepared for their trip this weekend to Philadelphia. That included QB Matt Cassel who reports the strength in his left knee  improves on a daily basis.

“I’m getting better each and every week,” said Cassel, who added he came through his first game with no problems. “There was not anything more than normal, just bumps and bruises you always have after the game.”

As for the hub-bub over Haley’s statements about the quarterback position this week, Cassel said he had not heard or read them and doesn’t plan too. He was asked if he thought the head coach was in his corner.

“I hope he is; I’m in his corner,” said Cassel. “He’s been consistent that he wants to create competition. That’s fine with me. I’m ready for the competition. He’s been supportive of me.”

Haley did not back off his comments while giving Cassel a vote  of confidence. “I want to be clear that there’s no doubt in my mind that Matt Cassel gives us the best chance to win,” said Haley. “If that ever changes, I’ll stand by what I believe in and put the best guys out there.”

The man with the $63 million contract was asked if that buys him more time in establishing himself, because the club  has committed so much money to him.

“I don’t think a contract has anything to do with it,” said Cassel. “I think they are going to play the best person out there. I think they feel like I’m the best guy for the job, or they wouldn’t have offered me what they offered me.”

Cassel’s time this week has been spent on the Eagles defense and their seemingly limitless number of blitzes.

“They have a very dynamic blitz scheme,” Cassel said. “They bring multiple looks and bring people from different areas of the field. You have to play heads up and know your hots (read).”

One former Chiefs note: S Bernard Pollard signed on Thursday with the Houston Texans.

well they will play, I wonder if this will be the game we arent supposed to win but we do.

I expect to lose this game in philly, but KC will probably win 2 games they should win, and 2 they shouldnt…this may be one they shouldnt, the injuries to the eagles players will help…a lot…

Ill also say its too bad pollard signed with the texans when the giants may put phillips on IR and need a safety.

Hmmmm, it would certainly be convenient to have both Bowe and Johnson at full speed come Sunday in Philly.

I know it must be viewed as a long shot but this game vs the Eagles can be won by the young Chiefs. If we can keep the mistakes to a minimum like we did on the road in Baltimore combined with the effort and defensive performance we saw against the Raiders, we can win this thing.

I also think it’ll help that both Cassel and Wade have a game now under their belts.

    Go Chiefs!

also im surprised that thigpen or guit isnt gone to make room to move Lance Long up to the active roster, also cutting copper, and bringing in an extra DB.

  • September 24, 2009  - Stiv says:

I still think they have it in mind to make a trade with one of the backup QB’s. Somewhere soon a QB or two will go down and someone will be in need.

  • September 24, 2009  - Anonymous says:

nice point on wade…to me wade is like a patten or…givens…any of those recievers that(branch) were better because of Brady…this will happen with cassel too

I think if people believe cassel didnt look good last week, they must be blind…he was great for a guy with a bad knee his int’s had to do with planting…honestly I love the guy, his passion to play the game.

this is a top QB, just needs to get the timing down.

  • September 24, 2009  - Stiv says:

Yeah, I think Cassel will be fine. He played well for the most part and I love the competitive fire he brings to the field. That TD pass to Bowe was a thing of beauty. Given a little time to heal up and get comfortable I think we’ll see we have a QB.

Good point, Stiv. Thing is, that team may very well be the Chiefs.

Yeah, it could certainly happen. Especially behind our “a work in progress” o-line. Hopefully not, hopefully we’ll come across someone in a real bind and can glean a decent pick for one of the backup guys.

But back to the condition of our o-line, I’ll go to my grave wondering just what in hell Carl was thinking allowing the o-line to disintegrate after having one of the better if not best lines for years.

My guess is that he was thinking of his retirement. He knew he wouldn’t be around much longer. I also think that’s why he didn’t trade Tony G last year. He didn’t want to be the guy that pulled the trigger on that deal. Especially on his way out the door.

Common sense dictates that Brodie Croyle to block mutt ca$$el for the win wouldst be apropos! Alas, as be oblivious – 0-20 portends…

I really doubt Carl Peterson lost his mind the last ten years in KC. He probably listened to the incompetents he hired or those who’s opinion he valued. I am sure he wanted to be the “smartest” GM in the history of sports. His ego was bigger than all outdoors, we all know that. Simms, Savii, etc all were collectively someone else’s idea of a future HOFer for the Chiefs and Carl bought into it. His real problem was he could not ID a “good coach” since Marty. His last coach is a perfect example. The first time herm left the Chiefs, Carl told him the Chiefs were only “loaning” his out. Carl grabbed Herm up to fix the Vermeil situation. Herm failed and we are what we are. Carl is wealthy and has a good job and it has to be eating him to death every time he want to say what a great job he did with the Chiefs, knowing he really dropped this team in a toilet and flushed before leaving office.

  • September 24, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

  • September 24, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

Problem is, the “turd” Herm Edwards created clogged up the toilet to the point of overflowing. Sh*t was everywhere. Now Todd Haley and Scott Pioli are having to clean up the mess. And that’s the whole problem right there with the impatience and bashing of these two guys. Nobody wants to WATCH a sh*tty mess being cleaned up. They just want it cleaned up ASAP. It’s certainly not pretty sight, is it? But you have to get rid of the mess before you can start shining and polishing the finished product. Give it time. Do you want it to be glossed-over quickly? Or do you want it sparkling clean and disinfected from top to bottom?

The only people I see showing a lack of patience are the media types who want something negative to talk about, even if they have to fabricate it.

Maybe I should stop checking for news so often, b/c that only feeds their need to invent new news for me to look at.

  • September 24, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    Uncuffed,

That is true. Negativity sells, whether we like it or not. “Media types” have to have jobs like everybody else, I suppose. Although I’d rate a lot of them right up there with car salesmen and real estate agents for slimey-ness.

Ummm…you don’t sell cars or houses, do you?

Getting to current management, I do not see a fix much less a quick one. It seems like a thousand attempts at the DL. The OL is pitiful but may come together somewhat by Nov. With Bowe nicked, we are down to NFL air for WR. You can pretty much look down on every aspect of the 09 Chiefs so I guess we need to give Pioli/Haley a year or three to fix things. But, man, is it hard to continue to be the bottom of the NFL. Not much more to be said without a win, is there?

I hear ya, loud and clear. It’s like wading waist-deep through a sh*thole, and when you get to the other side, you find a nice steak dinner. The steak is good, sure. But was it worth it? Especially when you can go somewhere else for the steak, and not have to wade through the sh*thole to get it.

Well I just saw that the chiefs will be without Derrick Johnson for the Eagles game. That’s not good, since he was about the only chief making big plays on defense. I hope Bowe can go on Sunday or the chiefs won’t have a receiver to throw to…

I still can’t get over the roughing the passer call, against us on that last drive. Has anyone heard anything about that call i.e. if it was the right one?? He didn’t slide, and it kept that drive from ending and lead to the eventual winning touchdown. I need to know if that was the right call.

  • September 24, 2009  - Pro Scout says:

    Bobby Wade
Wade has never put up huge numbers, but Matt Cassel is the best QB he’s ever had throwing to him. He had any number of bad QBs in Chicago to start off his career, then had Vince Young in Tennessee, then followed that up with Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte in Minnesota. Hard to believe he was as productive as he’s been so far in his career when you put it in perspective. I can see Wade catching 70 passes this year and holding down the fort as a punt returner.

Also, I know he’s old and he dropped a pass last week, but Bobby Engram is another chain mover. Bowe is the dynamic playmaker, but Wade and Engram should do a solid job all year making tough catches and picking up first downs.

  • September 24, 2009  - el cid says:

Pro Scout – Only wish we had someone to backup Bowe other then Copper and Bradley. Every team needs help at the backups but those two are 3rd stringers based on production. DJ missing in action is serious but better to wait until he is healthy and a season ending injury. No matter what, I do not feel we will matchup well against Philly.

  • September 24, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

    Hawaiian Chief,

That roughing the passer call was total BS. Obviously the ref must have incorrectly thought the QB was already downed, but in fact he wasn’t.

While that call hurt, it didn’t necessarily keep the drive alive as you suggest. The foul came on 1st and 15, thus making it 1st and 10 instead of 2nd and 18. Big difference and 15 yards upfield, but they still could have kept going.

In the end, it was a very bad call, but that happens and we should have overcome it. I wouldn’t obsess over it.

    I agree Hawaiianchief,
It was a huge call late in the game. Essentially the officials gave the Raiders 1/5th of the field (18 yds) and an extra down. You’re right Uncuffed they could have overcome it, but that was very poor officiating in the last couple minutes of the game.
I won’t blame the officials for losing the game, but I think anyone can see an 18 yd. gift is a big deal in a 2 minute drill.
