Throwback Look Coming Sunday

The Chiefs will be wearing the uniform and helmets of the Dallas Texans this weekend when the Dallas Cowboys come to Arrowhead Stadium.

There’s not much difference between the Texans uniform and the Chiefs, with the exception of the helmet. Players will not have to change helmets like some teams must for their throwbacks. Their KC arrowhead logo will simply be replaced by a logo of the state of Texas, with a star on the location of Dallas.

The other noticeable difference in the uniforms will come with the helmet facemasks. The Texans had gray facemasks and as you can see from the picture (right), their grills have already been switched from the normal white.

Rin has to disagree a bit; differences are subtle but several actually – dependent on just how true to history they seek to be. Beyond modern uniform material used and modern shoes (horrid), facemask style & stripe-less sleeves, as well width things such as sock stripe & pant stripe, twill be close but not exact.

Ought to be interesting tho – just as it was when Herm Edwards had the Chiefs come out in their all white uniforms at home a couple years ago – loved it Herm!

Rin will always state the obvious: the old school uniforms were better than today’s. Heavier weight & hotter? To be sure. Not as advanced safety-wise as today’s? Sure. But in the looks department, no contest…yesterday RULED.

The old Chiefs helmet logo (arrowhead) used to be larger and less thick border-lined…why a stated ‘traditionalist’ like a Lamar Hunt Sr. as well Jr would want to down-size that magnificent calling card is beyond me. The current one the last xxxx? years looks pathetic & puny.

The sleeve stripes or ‘piping’ as Lamar used to refer said too is superfluous my opine. The old style black-cleated shoes W/ Fred Williamson or Frank Pitts white taped ‘Spats’ look – awesome.

It all went wrong in 1968…

Whether twas as some suggest due to superstition a Hank Stram because the Chiefs lost on the West Coast in their all whites every game they played there 1967 (Superbowl 1 Packers & regular season to OAK & SD; we also lost to LAs Rams exhibition but we wore our reds that evening)- or – because as the late Lamar Hunt told Rin due to “a desire to have more contrast in the uniforms”, fact is the Chiefs won EVERY game they played in 1966 in the all whites leading up to the 1967 Superbowl- the only 2 games they lost in 1966 were in their HOME reds, at home.

I think it was a matter of Hank Stram, the dapper fashion bug he was – a messing with something had no need to mess with. And so 1968 year the change they played 4 games on the West Coast – and, lost 3 of them (tho 1 loss was again in our home reds which we wore a losing effort in LA vs the Rams.)

They started the changes via the clownish looking red pants and sleeve-stripes regular season ‘68 – hated them then, hate them still. Eventually they went in the early 70s to smaller jersey numerals, garish red-shoes, and those 10 miles of bad road looking facemasks.

Here’s hoping again as always they go back to the original KC look of ‘63-’67 HOME, & the all-white ROAD uniforms the same period. Even now they wear white socks instead of red on the road unlike the original teams did – UG-LY.

Oh & about these modern era game programs- BLECH! Let’s go back to those AFL days of yore the 1960s of colorful pictorials INDIVIDUALLY ascribed via each team – not cookie cutter generic covers the merged AFL/NFL first went to in the 1970s.

    Hey – Warpint is back!

Next, lets’ return to those beautiful George Toma painted gold, red, white, blue & orange end zones with AFL logos, a running Chief logo at midfield, Hank, Otis, Lenny, Buck, Bobby, Johnny & the two Jims, “Supergnat”, “Thunderfoot”, 65 toss power trap, 52 Pop GO, goalposts right on the goalline ’stead of at the rear!

And another thing, about- oh, ok…my time is up. This is your football fashion maven Rin Tin ‘Bill Blass’ Tin here saying “bye-bye for now!”

Have to agree with Rin on this one, I really prefer the all white uniforms that yesterdays Chiefs wore. But the only constant in life is change and those who don’t flow and adapt with it fall by the wayside and eventually have to move in and live with Rin back in Undead Als house in the 60s and 70s.

I actually read Rins post today. Very well put Rin, even with your normal token man-love to Herm.

It was nice to see something somewhat objective from you. Maybe you can keep it up in the other facets of this team.

    Hey mr awwsome

Here’s what the savior had to say about those Texans uniforms – you know, the ones you denigrated:

“I had some old helmets growing up and jerseys and things like that. I saw them at the owners meeting and I think it’s cool stuff, some of them are awesome, ours being one of them.”

    - ours being one of them…

“Those AFL guys, and Mr. Hunt being the main one, to fight and stay alive to keep it going and get it to where it is today is a big part of why we’re all here. I think it’s great. I wore a couple of shirts and hats in training camp and I like wearing them.”

    - likes wearing them…
