What Should The Chiefs Do? Volume III

Twice we’ve conducted a poll of readers with the same results: Chiefs fans want their team to either select LB Aaron Curry with the third choice in the first round or trade the selection and pick up more draft choices.

We’ve written at length about how tough a trade would be.  Because of that, we are taking version No. 3 of the poll and we are changing the rules.

Here’s what I want to know.  The Chiefs can’t deal the pick, so they have to select a player.

Who should that player be?

In 25 words or less give me the rationale for the player.  Just one name, no either/or, no if Detroit and St. Louis does this, the Chiefs do that.  Factor in your predictions for the Lions and Rams in making the Chiefs selection.

Make a pick and tell us why.  Voting is open until 5 p.m. on Monday

  • April 19, 2009  - Adam says:

I think the logical pick is Eugene Monroe. Move Fat Albert to RT and let Monroe take LT. Bookend Tackles for the next ten years.

  • April 19, 2009  - Tim says:

Eugene Monroe. Set the OL. You don’t pay that kind of big money to a LB you have yet to see if they can really rush the passer.

  • April 19, 2009  - Mark says:

Aaron Curry. Best player, need position, Pioli type of do everything player. You don’t pay another Tackle Huge $$$. Albert’s the proven LT. He doesn’t move.

  • April 19, 2009  - Zach says:

John Clayton referred to Brian Orakpo as the best pash rusher in the draft. As a linebacker in the 3-4, I think it would be worth the stretch to take him with the 3rd pick since he could become a player who gets a lot of sacks per season.

  • April 19, 2009  - Rip 'em a new one says:

Quoting Greg Cox on this past week’s “Path to the Draft” on NFL-N, Chiefs should take Raji. The quote: “Running a 3-4 defense, you need a dominate NT. You can’t build a Ferrari using BMW parts”.

  • April 19, 2009  - Blake says:

Aaron Curry, best player in the draft. You can get a quality RT later in the draft.

  • April 19, 2009  - Chuck Diesel says:

Draft Stafford with the third pick and then get a three way trade going where we would get boldin and a pick in the top 15 and another in the 2nd or 3rd round

  • April 19, 2009  - Graeme says:

Eugene Monroe. Best pass-blocking OT; would fit Haley’s O. Curry would be great, but that’s too high for a LB that doesn’t rush the passer.

  • April 19, 2009  - anonymous says:

    Detroit, M. Stafford, QB, Georgia
    St.Louis, J. Smith, OT, Baylor
Kansas City, M. Sanchez, QB, SC

This would be a ballsy move, but someone would be forced to deal with Pioli, if they want a talented QB. Denver and the Jet’s would have to at least make the call to Pioli.

  • April 19, 2009  - jim lloyd says:

Mike Mayock as sharp as ony one and just said that Currey is the football player in the whole draft –all around .

  • April 19, 2009  - Josh says:

I think the Chiefs should pick either Eugene Monroe or Aaron Curry.

  • April 19, 2009  - DerekfromDC says:

    If:
    Detroit: Stafford
    St. Louis: Justin Smith
KC: Aaron Curry, best defensive player available

    If:
    Detroit: Curry
    St. Louis: Stafford
KC: Justin Smith, best player available that fills a Chiefs need.

  • April 19, 2009  - Ben says:

Aaron Curry. Throw out the “draft for need” vs. “best available” debate: he qualifies for both.

  • April 19, 2009  - tm1946 says:

If still available Stafford, if gone Curry, if both gone Raji

  • April 19, 2009  - JG says:

    Curry

He’s verastile, has a great work ethic, and is exactly the type of character that Pioli loves.

  • April 19, 2009  - Greg says:

    Draft Stafford and ditch Cassel.

  • April 19, 2009  - Dave says:

Sanchez. Trade him if you get a great offer, but otherwise keep him as insurance in case Cassel (who still isn’t signed past 2009) turns out to be a flop.

  • April 19, 2009  - Skrappy says:

    Brian Orakpo.

He is an animal in the vein of Adalius Thomas, another OLB/DE Hybrid that Pioli loved and is a perfect fit in a 3-4, 4-3 Hybrid.

  • April 19, 2009  - Anonymous says:

Monroe as he represent the best value with the third pick. LOT’s are .much more valuable than LBs who are not rushers

  • April 19, 2009  - byzkit says:

Everett Brown best pass rusher in the draft and can do it with his hand on the ground or standing

  • April 19, 2009  - GF says:

    Lions: Aaron Curry
    Rams: Justin Smith
    Chiefs: Eugene Monroe

You can’t let your $14.6 mil qb take a hit like Croyle did last season that put him out for the year.

  • April 19, 2009  - Will H. says:

    Jason Smith - Tackle Baylor

Scott Pioli knows that you build the football team up front by providing excellent protection for your new quarterback. With Albert - bookends for years!

  • April 19, 2009  - Igorash says:

Sanchez just for ins and the trade value

  • April 19, 2009  - arrowhead86 says:

    Eugene Monroe.

Protects QB. Improved OL controls the clock, which also protects the defense. Draft picks this high need to impact everything. Left tackle will.

  • April 19, 2009  - Mike says:

    Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech.

Gonzo’s gonna be doing the Dirty-Bird in the ATL. Cassel needs a target. OL and Defense will follow, not necessarily in that order.

  • April 19, 2009  - alex k says:

Tyson Jackson fills a glaring need, Jackson is the only true 5 technique DL…

Those who say sanchez fail to understand that the value would be little if teams knew we’d be in trouble stuck with another QB.

  • April 19, 2009  - Harold C. says:

Curry will still be there at #3 and the Chiefs should take him since he fills a need and is the best overall player in the draft….or so it is said.

  • April 19, 2009  - DT14Priest says:

SAM LBs are a dime a dozen. For the position Curry is most likely going to fill there are better canidates that actually played the position.

Monroe - You build through the trench and extend outward. Chiefs need to protect their 15 million dollar/2nd round draft pick investment in Cassel with a ‘good’ young line.

  • April 19, 2009  - Randy says:

Pick Eugene Monroe, play him on the right side. Matt Cassell has the talent, we’ve got to keep him on his feet.

  • April 19, 2009  - PharmerVet says:

    Eugene Monroe

Can’t wait till the 3rd round to get a sure thing OT. Doesn’t matter which one goes to the right side, we’d have the bookends that we need

  • April 19, 2009  - anonymous says:

How the hell does that change the fact that “teams”
that need a QB and have Sanchez rated as a top 10 talent, would be Forced to deal with Pioli?

Pioli isn’t stupid! He’s not going to try and rape a team who is willing to make some trades to acquire the QB that they covet. Not with this draft’s talent in the top 10.

Lets name a few teams that fit the above description.

    Cleveland

    Deadskins
Seattle (Questionable if they would trade for him, but a good possibility they could draft him which other teams must take into consideration.)

    Donkeys

    9ers

    BiQueens

    Jets

    Jags

And I’m sure there are a couple more that slip my mind in the spur of the moment.

Like I said it’s ballsy but….. as Coach Lyons used to say “no guts no glory”

  • April 19, 2009  - Hawaiianchief says:

    A. Curry. Physical, fast, smart. Intangiables, proven leader, versatile. Lines up with our needs. Linebacker was our weakest position on a crappy defense.

  • April 19, 2009  - eyePod says:

    Lions take Stafford
    Rams take Jason Smith
Chiefs should take Crabtree. Other top 3 pick WR’s… Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitz. The only recent bust is Charles Rodgers, but he was a Lions pick. Crabtree/DBowe/Tony G…. *SIGH* We would have the potential for 3 thousand yard receivers. (AZ did it last year with underrated Breaston).

And there is absolutely no reason to move Albert to RT. He is amazing. Jason Peters just got a huge contract and everything from Philly, and he gave up the most sacks out of any left tackle in the league. I’d take the 4.5 sacks that Albert gave up than the 11.5 that Jason Peters gave up any day. Draft a RT in the 3rd.

  • April 19, 2009  - Scott says:

Best O-lineman available. I think Pioli knows who that would be, better than I do.

Nothing beats a good O-line. NOTHING.

(I’m still holding on to the dream that Denver will trade us their two first rounders for a shot at Sanchez, though.)

  • April 19, 2009  - Kevin says:

    Tyson Jackson or Bj Raji

Both help fill out that 3-4 line and both are being targeted by Denver. If we can take away at least one of the 2, we help ourselves out while hurting our enemy

  • April 19, 2009  - jt says:

Some egos on here seems to throw a fit if anyone doesn’t agree with his thoughts. While the old saying comes to mind assholes everyone has one ,in some that would be 2 fold . So Bob I have complete faith that Pioli well make the right choice for our chiefs . Regardless what well be said or Blog on that issue here. I never felt that way with Peterson in fact I think he would have had better luck throwing a dart at the draft board . See you on draft day

  • April 19, 2009  - the punk-you-asian guy says:

im with a few of u guys we should draft sanchez to trade to somebody els in the draft for more piucks with the lack of qbs in this draft its a ballsy ballsy move but theirs only 3 good qbs so i say we do that

  • April 19, 2009  - Gump says:

I give up. I’m going to try to sleep until Saturday afternoon.

  • April 19, 2009  - Zach says:

Monroe, move albert to LG where he played in college, trade waters for more picks

  • April 20, 2009  - dklogue1 says:

Monroe, how often do you get to draft at #3? Move Albert to LG,Goff,C and Waters RG. Remember Willie and WIll?

  • April 20, 2009  - GF says:

I know LJ and Priest remember Willie and Will.

  • April 20, 2009  - LSU says:

Tyson Jackson 6′4′ 298…can play DE in a 4-3 under or DE in a 4-3. Scouting reports say he plays defense and makes other guys around him better. Sounds like a Pioli guy to me. Has over 20 sacks in his career at LSU, but is also a good two gap run defender. Would like to trade down to get this guy so we could add a pick and get a pass rusher too…

  • April 20, 2009  - LSU says:

Tyson Jackson 6′4′ 298…can play DE in a 4-3 under or DE in a 3-4.

    *or DE in a 3-4*

  • April 20, 2009  - FSU says:

Everette Brown DE/OLB/Pass Rusher 6′2′ 256. Just go to youtube and watch the video of this guy. Sends chills down the spain especially with the tomahawk chop playing in the background…more importantly is a high character guy who works hard. Had 14 sacks last year in his junior season. Would bring the heat off the edge…could conceivably take him at #3 and be happy with it

  • April 20, 2009  - CIN says:

Connor Barwin DE/OLB/Pass Rusher/TE 6′4 256.  One of the most versatile players in the draft (Pioli written all over him).  Is a hell of an athlete that even ran a 4.47 40 at his pro day according to some scouts.  Also played basketball for Cincinnati…had 11 sacks last year in his first year at DE after starting his career at TE. Would like to trade down and accumulate picks to get this guy

  • April 20, 2009  - CIN says:

    #93 Jackson, LSU:

    #99 Brown, FSU:

    #5 Barwin, DE:

  • April 20, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

    Monroe

  • April 20, 2009  - Lukat Mapeenos says:

    “True” Red & Gold’s mom…she’s a helluva OT!

  • April 20, 2009  - aPauled says:

Aaron Curry to the Chiefs. Kind of surprised that the Lions haven’t started contract talks with Stafford. May be bad news for the Chiefs, as the Lions may settle for Curry.

  • April 20, 2009  - colby says:

Jason Smith/Eugene Monroe. Whichever one is there. If both are there, I’d lean towards Monroe.

  • April 20, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

Monroe; he’s the best player available. It’s rare that a defensive player is as valuable as a reliable starting LT; I’m not seeing it in this draft.

That said, I wish the Chiefs could get their hands on a 2nd round pick; there looks to be a lot of good defensive value in that area.

  • April 20, 2009  - gorillafan says:

    Curry. Best player

  • April 20, 2009  - Anonymous says:

have any of you people touting curry actually watched him play? who are you to say he is the best player? seriously…

and remember, the RIGHT 53 players, not the most TALENTED 53 players

o-lines more than any other position group can be drafted in the later rounds…

for that reason…GO DEFENSE! Pass Rusher or Run Stuffing End!

    I rest my case

  • April 20, 2009  - Anonymous says:

and look at the o-line that just won the superbowl, and most of the o-lines this decade that have won the superbowl for that matter. solid yet unspectacular.

where did the great roaf/waters/wiegmann/shields/tait(etc) lines get us without a DEFENSE?!

  • April 20, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

One of the reasons the Chiefs are in such bad shape defensively is that they reached for defensive players in the draft out of need.

I prefer a defensive-oriented team, but if a #3 defensive talent isn’t there you can’t just grab a guy and hope he outperforms.

  • April 20, 2009  - Devildog 1976 says:

BJ Raji, we need a beast at NT to run any sort of 3-4. (Hybrid, or standard)

Anonymous is correct. Off. sells tickets and Def. wins Championships. That is how it works, don’t ask me why it just does.

It is all about the TEAM……….and……….

    THE RIGHT (22) 53 2009

    In Pioli I trust

  • April 20, 2009  - Double A says:

IMO, the pick will be traded. If not, at #3– Aaron Curry. Defensive playmaker, hard working, smart. Can “turn a corner”, has the closing speed to blitz.

  • April 20, 2009  - Gavin says:

    Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

Pioli thinks he can build a D with late draft picks and vets. Pats really became great with the additions of Wes and Moss and it’s hard to find those kind of game changers…

  • April 20, 2009  - anonymous says:

Several of you would have already been cut by Haley.
You can’t even follow simple WRITTEN instructions!

The object of this poor attempt at getting hits on on the authors blog was only 2 rules, and some idiots couldn’t even follow those.

    They were as follows.

    NO If’s!

    And

Take into consideration what you think Detroit and St. Louis will do and make your pick accordingly!

    Thick as an F’n Brick!

  • April 20, 2009  - Double A says:

^^^ Blog police off his meds ^^^

  • April 20, 2009  - SBIVVictors says:

    Eugene Monroe.

The Chiefs o-line has sucked for a couple of years, e.g., it hasn’t been able to block for a superb power runner like LJ, and neither has it been able to pass protect (two quarterbacks knocked out for the year operating from under center).

Monroe is a true, pass-protecting left tackle, which fits with the pass-oriented offense that will be run. Albert is capable of playing any position on the line.

Linebackers can be had later in the draft.

  • April 20, 2009  - RedandGoldRice says:

Since Bob insists on a name here, I’m going out on a limb here and say Tyson Jackson. Best D-lineman in the draft.

  • April 20, 2009  - SG says:

Mr. Monroe should be our pick. LJ needs to have excuses taken away.

  • April 20, 2009  - brad says:

WR - Maclin gives them a wr and a return guy.

#3 is a place to draft playmakers/game changers…not building blocks.

np w/crabtree but out of words.

  • April 20, 2009  - 2petchickens says:

Build the trenches…I vote for Monroe.

  • April 20, 2009  - B in SC says:

Jason Smith,OT, Baylor. Franchise tackles are hard to get. Jared Allen was a 4th rounder. Pioli will find a pass rusher.

  • April 20, 2009  - cupp says:

With the #3 pick the Kansas City Chiefs select OT E. Monroe.
Based on our recent history If we select a Def. player in the 1st round he’s guaranteed to underachieve.

  • April 20, 2009  - Marc Festervand says:

Curry. Best player, high character, leader.

  • April 20, 2009  - Marc Festervand says:

    Lions: Stafford
    Rams: Monroe or Smith
    Chiefs: Curry

  • April 20, 2009  - JD says:

    - Eugene Monroe is #1 based upon the Chiefs’ offensive line needs and the need to protect their investment in Cassel. -

It’s more accurate to show you my top three:

    1. Monroe
    2. Curry - *highest trade value
    3. J. Smith

That said, I’m in favor of drafting down.

  • April 20, 2009  - swiss chief says:

    lions>stafford
    rams>monroe
    chiefs>curry

  • April 20, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

    Maclin = Franklin….

    I say take monroe

  • April 20, 2009  - Rob says:

Pick up one of the two OTs. EVERYTHING on offense starts with a solid line. Even Tom Brady would have been terrible the last 3 years behind our line. Solidify the line, plug in any RB to run through the gaps, improve speed and height at WR.

  • April 20, 2009  - Doug S. says:

Man I’m back and forth on this. I know Curry is the sexy pick, but I can’t get my mind off the O-line. Today I’m thinking O-Line.

  • April 20, 2009  - Rip 'em a new one says:

    Bob,

This one way communication is getting tenuous. You really need to consider some form of interacting.

  • April 20, 2009  - macgyver says:

Sorry if this is not part of the rules for this response, but I have been hearing a lot of info that the Redskins want to acquire Sanchez and feel they need to pick prior to Seattle, leaving the Chiefs as likley trade partners. I just feel as if Pioli wants to do some wheeling and dealing and will find a way to get extra picks. I do agree with Swiss Chief in that Staffor and Monroe will go 1-2 and if nothing changes Curry will be the pick

  • April 20, 2009  - HWC says:

No to Jackson. Let’s not take another LSU D lineman with no pass rushing skills in the 1st round! ILBs can be found in rounds 3-5

    It’s all about Monroe baby!!!!!!!

  • April 20, 2009  - Nick says:

Pioli’s draft history would suggest he likes linemen and tightends in the first round. I think the lines are the most important to address. We alreay have a bunch of high draft picks on the defensive line, so let’s add to our offensive line now.

Monroe will probably be there so they should pull the trigger on him.

  • April 20, 2009  - MarkInTexas says:

Curry. Best player available. 3-4 scheme will require an abundance of linebackers.

  • April 20, 2009  - Jerry says:

Eugene Monroe because the 3rd pick is too high for a LB who doesn’t rush the QB.

  • April 20, 2009  - Roger says:

Sanchez - be ballsy…do exactly what SD did with Eli. KC badly needs more selections and picking Sanchez is the best chance for that. monroe would be my second choice if they decide to make the safer play. no to curry…too high to pick a LB that doesn’t rush the passer.

  • April 20, 2009  - RatsoReily says:

AARON CURRY - He’s top draft propspect, I think he’ll continue to delevelop into an All Pro LB and I like his work ethics/attitude. He’s not a reach and pass rush is the most important need the Chief’s have.

I know this is late but hey I work for a living.

  • April 20, 2009  - ArrowheadHawk says:

    Tyson Jackson

Didn’t play UT so the “bust” factor is lower.

  • April 20, 2009  - jim lloyd says:

Arron Currey —-DEFFENCE DOES WIN EVERY TIME !

  • April 20, 2009  - Skrappy says:

    Good Idea Bob…

This is going to be quite a bit different outcome than the Curry or Trade results of last time…

  • April 21, 2009  - mike says:

i think the lions will draft jason smith to fixed the line of the lions , rams got 2nd pick , i think they will draft monroe , leaving the chief with curry.

  • April 21, 2009  - tm1946 says:

After reading 80+ ideas, I sort of like Sanchez and trade him. But a trading partner better be locked down before the pick is make. Otherwise the Chiefs could end up like the Royals, to many first basemen, to many QB and no OL.

  • April 21, 2009  - ChuckDiesel says:
