A Gallant Effort In Overtime Defeat

From Arrowhead Stadium

It was a home game for the Chiefs on Sunday against Dallas. Only sometimes it didn’t sound like one, as a huge group of Cowboys fans invaded the red and gold den and made themselves known.

And in the end, they were screaming and celebrating as the Cowboys pulled out a 26-20 victory in overtime over the Chiefs.

While the outcome was the same, the plot of this defeat was very different for Todd Haley and his team. Thanks to a pair of first-half Dallas turnovers, the Chiefs jumped out to a lead and held it until the fourth quarter. They fell behind, and then came back to tie the game. They had the ball twice in the overtime and couldn’t get much offense going.

In the end, Dallas WR Miles Austin (left) became the game’s hero, catching a short pass from QB Tony Romo, breaking a pair of tackles and turning it into a 60-yard touchdown play that gave the Cowboys a victory and now a 3-2 record.

Overall, the Chiefs probably played their best game of the season. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but there was more teamwork than they had displayed at any point in the previous four games. It provided a few positives in what was a negative outcome.

That’s 0-5 on the season, nine-straight defeats and 28 losses in their last 30 games. That ranks among the worst stretch of losing in NFL history.

There was plenty to write about, plenty of subjects:

I could only hear the game on radio and there was one point were we made a reception for 9 yards or something like that and it was going to be 2nd and 1 but there was a 5 yard penalty against the Cowboys. We accepted the penalty for a first down. I thought that was incredibly stupid. We only needed one more yard to make a first and it would have been only 2nd down but we decided to go back 4 yards for a automatic first. That is real dumb in my book. It shows how pathetic our running game is if we have no confidence that we can run for one yard. Our O’line needs to be overhauled as soon as possible.

I can’t believe how bad Miles Austin made MIKE BROWN look. The angles Brown took on both of those long catch & run plays were an embarrassment.

Brown has been a major let-down, as far as I’m concerned. It appears he is no longer an NFL starting safety. I’d like to see DeJuan Morgan on the field next week.

  • October 12, 2009  - Harold C. says:

You want to know how bad it is? I think Lions fans are pitying us.

  • October 12, 2009  - Josh says:

Didn’t you guys see anything good? The defensive line got a few good pushes. Cassel showed poise with NO protection to speak of. The Chiefs scored ten points off of turnovers.

It’s so easy to criticize. Yes, Leggitt got burned twice for the go ahead and game-winning touchdowns. Yes, Brown looked lost out there. Yes, that offensive line is atrocious. WE ALREADY KNEW THESE THINGS! We’ve only played one team this season that isn’t a playoff caliber team and we’ve only been blown out of the stadium once.
This team, for as little talent as it collectively has, plays its guts out week in and week out. Be proud of that. Be proud that this team, whom everyone wrote off in JULY hasn’t packed it in. They WANT to win. Haley wants to win. Clark Hunt wants to win. Scott Pioli wants to win. The question to you nay-saying “fans” is, do you? Be a fan. Love this team. Appreciate the fact that Kansas City has a team to call its own. Yes, it sucks to lose. I hate it. I hate it more than anything. Doing the walk of shame after the Raiders game was almost unbearable. But what good does it do to sit and talk about how bad Haley is at coaching or how “done” LJ is or how the o-line couldn’t keep a junior high d-line from the QB? Why focus on those things? Love your team. Be a fan.

    Thanks, md554chiefs.

I’m just as frustrated as everyone else…but I DID see some good things yesterday!

  • October 12, 2009  - MenInRed says:

The two plays that beat us came from our own player, it was do to our Safty Brown. Yes it was Leggitt’s man to cover and he did, he didnt get beat, he got over powered by Austin but at least Leggitt was in on the play and slowed Miles down just long enough for more help to arrive and that’s where LOSER Brown shows up and didn’t do a damn thing. It was the Safty’s job to come and supply finishing touch/help on both of those plays and it was Brown who let them get away for the long yards & score after the catch. Brown had the wrong angle and got beat on the first one and then was stiff armed out of the play like a school boy on the second one. He alone has cost a few big plays the last several games if u go back and watch the tape, from being out of position or just lost out there to being just flat out beat. Haley errored in letting Pollard go.

I understand your points, Josh. However, I have followed this team closely for a long, long time. I think that gives me the right to bitch about the things I see going wrong. I fail to see how that makes me any less of a fan than anyone else.

    Just a few observations:

-The Chiefs defensive players have had problems tackling for years. Players have come and gone, coaches have come and gone…but the problem seems to remain. I simply cannot understand it. Everyone misses a tackle now and then, even the best players. But they don’t do it on a consistant basis like our team does. Is it something about our uniform? I’m completely lost on this.

-These running plays to LJ for a loss, no gain, or a yard or two, 20+ times a game has got to stop. In five games now, he has shown little, if any, ability to gain positive yardage. When he gets the ball, it’s basically a wasted play. Poor blocking or not, a running back should be able to gain some yardage at least part of the time. LJ has shown nothing so far. He’s had more than a fair chance. It’s time to see what Charles, Savage, or Battle can do with the bulk of the carries. I can’t imagine any one of those three doing any worse.

-Albert was getting smoked on almost every play yesterday. I thought he was supposed to be our best O-lineman? Waters has not shown much this year, either. Except a new ability to draw the yellow flag.

-Blocking and tackling are probably the two most basic fundamental skills in football. Until this team can learn to do both of those things consistantly, they will continue to struggle.

-Football games are 60 minutes long. Unless you’re one of the “elite” teams, you have to get it done for all 60 minutes to win. Dallas played the whole 60 minutes yesterday. The Chiefs didn’t. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time this team DID play the entire game. It’s been years.

I still think the Chiefs are headed in the right direction…and that we’ll get there eventually. But, they have a LONG way to go.

    Mad Chief,

My point was to ask you to look and see if you saw anything positive yesterday. Did you?

  • October 12, 2009  - Josh says:

    MenInRed,

If Haley made such a huge mistake in letting Pollard go, how come he sat at home on the couch while other free agent safeties went to other teams? Brown may not be the answer, but I’m positive Pollard wasn’t either.

  • October 12, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    Josh says:

“My point was to ask you to look and see if you saw anything positive yesterday. Did you?”

    Yes, I saw a couple.

-Cassel is emerging as a leader. His play needs to improve, though. He still had several series that he looked flat. But guys are starting to look at him as the leader of the team. That distinction has to be earned, and I think he’s slowly gaining everyone’s respect.

-The Defense didn’t let the Cowboys run all over them.

-The receivers looked better yesterday. Not great, but better.

    Your right > 100% .

  • October 12, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    Jim,

I personally believe the “cancer” to which you refer is LOSING. There are a lot of guys on our roster that haven’t won more than a handful of games in their entire NFL careers. It’s a hard habit to break. You have to go into every game believing that you’re going to win. You have to have a winning attitude. It’s a mindset, and too many of our players simply don’t have it yet. Of course, actually winning a game would be a good place to start.

  • October 12, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Leave LJ at home this week end and it might be a lot of help , then no one will be tempted to waste 30 % of play’s called zero result’s .

  • October 12, 2009  - Scott C says:

I thought Cassel looked better yesterday.
Most of LJ’s runs were up the middle and it was frustrating because when he ran a little outside he was getting yards. I would have liked to see them go away from the middle since they weren’t getting anywhere there.

Charles should not run back kicks anymore as he has poor judgment. I think it was the 1st return of the second half they kicked it in the corner. I think if he would have let it go it would have went out of bounds.

Donald Washington and Leggit sucked. Carr should have been in the whole time. Still again no more D.J. What is the coach thinking??? I’ll feel better in a couple days…

I agree. And Wade is no better on punt returns. Poor judgement and minimal return yardage. Our return game is absolutely dismal, period. Problem is, I don’t know who we have that would be any better.

  • October 12, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

Tyson Jackson 3 tackles in 5 games;Aaron Curry 32 tackles 2 sacks 2 forced fumbles…great pick Pioli!!! For the record LJ is not washed up Haley calls bad plays for the entire offense…Hey I think I was wrong about Cassel he could be a solid QB if he stops holding the ball 2 long, o-line played alot better pass blocking until we lost Albert. But Haley’s play calling is a joke atleast try 2 get LJ on the edge and let Cassel throw over the middle instead of swing passes and deep outs b/c we all know he’ll never have enough time for a deep out 2 develop!

I really think that they need to go back to Savage. Granted he didn’t look great in Phili, but who did? And against the Raiders he didn’t even have a chance to return ’cause SeaBas kept kickin it in the end zone. He’s a good runner and he still has the longest return beetween the 2 guys. But with Savage being inactive 2 weeks in a row who knows if he will ever get to come back.

  • October 12, 2009  - John says:

Josh, Pollard didn’t sit on the couch yesterday. He made six tackles (and got two assists) for the Texans. He made four (and got another assist) the week before against the Raiders.

Pollard may not be the guy Haley wanted… but he’s playing in the league.

What game were you watching? It couldn’t have been the Chiefs game…because Albert was getting smoked on damn near every play.

“For the record LJ is not washed up”

Then he’s a wash-OUT. I don’t care what play is called. If the guy has the football in his hands 20+ times a game and can’t make anything happen, then he needs to watching from the sideline. Can Charles, Savage, or Battle do any better with that many touches a game? I have no idea…but I’m sure ready to find out.

  • October 12, 2009  - Merwin in NY says:

Josh, I agree with you on the fact there must be some positives to come out of the game.
Unless we get pressure from the front seven we will consistently get smoked by good receivers. Also unless we get a good cohesive line thats played together for most of the season we will never have a good run game or time to pass with out getting hit.
I think now that the worst of the schedule is done we hopefully will see improvement each week as the team pulls together. I still believe that it’s not going to be a great improvement till after next years draft we we will get some really good talent brought in through the draft and free agents.

  • October 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

LOL… the same #50 that can’t cover a TE, yesterday he was getting abused by witten…

I can’t believe the chiefs defense is sorrier than it was last year giving up the most offensive yards.

  • October 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Merwin your really optimistic that they (pioli/haley) will draft better then they had this year. I know its early to tell whether they are busts, but Jackson doesn’t look like he can compete with the tackles and guards that he is going up against right now, hopefully a full season in the league and he will learn something, but I dont know.

Also you can’t compare Aaron Curry to Tyson Jackson, they play two different positions, but curry is making some progress…

  • October 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

by the way though, I was calling for Everette Brown to be drafted and he has 1 sack, 3 tackles and a forced fumble in 4 games, so it doesn’t look like Jackson is to far off of some other players that were drafted at the DE position, Tyson has 3 tackles, albeit over 5 games and no sacks or forced fumbles…

  • October 12, 2009  - el cid says:

    Got to say:

Poor officiating, really bad television broadcast ( thought I was watching the DAL homers and the camera coverage was all DAL, notice last play must of been 20 cameras in enzone after the catch).

Dallas did not want the win but the Chiefs could not play well enough to do more than keep it close except for the last drive in regulation. Anyone else notice, in OT Chiefs returned to the 1st qtr tactics and forgot about their last drive?

Haley feels some good things happened and I do not doubt it. But the Chiefs cannot run the ball, LJ cannot fall forward for 2 yds. OL, injuries not withstanding, still stink. Backups on Def are substandard. Denver was better in 08 than KC, so their fix was easier but that does not help KC.

The Dallas game was like the Oakland one, the Chiefs should of won but did just enough to lose. Sorry but we may not be able to beat WASH. Losers find a way to lose. Somehow Haley must convince the players they can win.

  • October 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Denver has a new QB, a new RB, a new defense, with a majority of new players on the defense, that’s really not saying its the same team that was there last year.

I think it’s quite possible that Haley came in with his yelling and berating players way of coaching and the players are not playing for him as hard as they could be.
