From the Mouth of Todd 10/12

From the Truman Sports Complex

It was another Monday after a Chiefs loss and another session with the media horde for head coach Todd Haley.

No real news out of this one. LT Branden Albert’s left ankle was sore on Monday according to the coach and his status for this week remains to be determined by the trainers and doctors.

Here’s some of the other stuff worthy of mentioning:

DID HE SECOND GUESS DECISION TO GO FOR ONE INSTEAD OF TWO POINTS AFTER LATE TOUCHDOWN.

“Yeah sure. I replayed a lot of that game. I didn’t sleep a whole bunch last night. Sure, you replay that. I was laying there with my wife and I said, ‘you think I should have gone for two?’ It’s two yards to win. But again, I stand by the decision I made. We’ve got two opportunities in overtime to win the game and really looked good.”

HOW MUCH OF RUN GAME PROBLEMS FALLS ON LARRY JOHNSON?

“I think a running back you kind of count on him to get something when there’s nothing there. But that’s easily said. I thought that Larry ran hard yesterday. I thought that what is a little misleading is we threw a couple of swing passes that ended up being counted as runs and specifically the one for the big loss that there was nothing he could really do. Those hurt your numbers a little bit and I know that’s discouraging at times. But I think the kid ran hard. He stuck it up in there and he needs a little help to …

“I thought Larry yesterday caught a big ball for us out of the backfield that was a tough catch that resulted in a first down. It was an excellent run after catch. I thought he had two terrific blitz pickups: one where we had a situation where the guard had to come down and he ended up on the three-technique, #99, and cut the guy to the ground and really beat up on him, on another one he cut #93. Those things are positives. It wasn’t all great but I think that Larry was an important part of us being in a position to win.”

ON WHY DERRICK JOHNSON ISN’T PLAYING

“There are a lot of factors that go into it. Right now, I’d rather you be talking about Demorrio Williams. That guy came out and played a heck of a game. Those guys happen to play the same position. So we are going to play the guys that give us the best chance to win, period. No. 53 talk about him. That guy busted his butt and made plays. 53 got a chance to play and he’s playing well and he’s giving us a chance to win. I thought Demorrio played a game good enough for us to win. He was one of the guys above the line of did you play good enough to win.”

ON THE LATE TOUCHDOWN CATCH BY DWAYNE BOWE

“Guys who want to be big- time players I’ve always believed make big-time plays in big-time games. That was our biggest situation to date and he made the play. That’s something to build on. I think Dwayne is much further along as far as understanding me, understanding us and what we’re trying to get done here. I think that’s positive. He’s making progress and he definitely has a chance to be a big-time player. We need the Dwayne Bowe’s and those guys to help pull this team to where we need to get to.”

DJ is one of our most talented players. Move him to where Belcher plays.

  • October 12, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Todd – I think you are trying to run to much , and would be better to jump on that no huddel and when Matt has to unload quick he does so much better .
If KC would do this , 1st dn’s –instead of punting !

  • October 12, 2009  - el cid says:

Believe Belcher is a backup so DJ still will not play. Get over it, you think DJ is most talented but Haley does not agree so ….. Haley wins and DJ play special teams and baring injury is gone by 2010,

Losing teams seem to find ways to lose, just one play here or there.I would not put WASH in the win column just yet. I remind you that Oakland and Dallas games were lost by the better team,KC.

Haley: “I was laying there with my wife and I said, ‘you think I should have gone for two?’”

Was he talking about the game, or what?

    Just joking.

Going for the tie was absolutely the right decision. If he went for two and didn’t make it…people would be calling for his head. (I still get pissed when I think of when Herm Edwards tried that against San Diego.) You go for the sure thing, and play for the win in Overtime. I don’t care what your record is.

Haley is an arrogant son of b****…I mean not not playing DJ when he has produced in the 2 games he has played is a complete joke! Goff has done nothing but produce sacks all year long and your talking about DJ is inconsistent GET THE F*** OUT OF HERE….If I were a player on this team i would kindly asked 2 be traded or released b/c there are double standards when it comes 2 this Haley guy!

  • October 12, 2009  - el cid says:

This may show up twice. Haley does not plan on using DJ any time soon. His choice for forget about DJ, he will have to find another team in 2010.

Losing teams tend to find ways to lose, a play here or there. Would not put WASH in the win column just yet. Vegas has WASH a 6 point favorite. It is up to Haley to get these guys to believe they can win a game.

You know, it’s funny though…no one IS. What do you think about that? Maybe the players believe in their coach, even if you don’t.

And I have news for you…DJ IS inconsistent. He plays great for a quarter, and then disappears for the rest of the game. Demorrio Williams may not be as good as DJ’s “flashes” are…but his level of play can be counted on. DJ has had PLENTY of time to show his worth as a player during his time in the league. Problem is…he hasn’t done it.

Start racking up as many points as possible , so when the reff’s start on their mis-call’s , team will in good shape .

IF DJ is getting outplayed he’s just getting outplayed. Williams and Mays both are making plays until DJ start performing like a 1st round pick he deserves to be a backup. Sure he made a couple decent plays here and there but its not about that its about being consistent.

And Bob why aren’t you and the rest of the KC media not asking better questions. Like why isn’t Flowers if he’s the best corner not matched up agasint a guy having a career day the second half of that game? Or why didn’t you put Charles or Battle in the game to provide a spark to the running game? Kind of like what the Cowboys did with Tashard Choice. Instead of questions like so do you second guess going for the 2pt conversion? Or questions like does this lost hurt more than a blowout? Come on Bob pick it up.

  • October 12, 2009  - Stiv says:

I think the thing with DJ has been two fold, first he’s had the nagging groin injury which slows him down and takes away his power, Secondly he hadn’t shown much system discipline, he wasn’t always where he was supposed to be, Haley won’t have that. So until he gets disciplined and takes care of his job first instead of doing the ad-lib nonsense that cause coverages to break down he won’t be playing much. It’s not the coaches fault, only the player can accomplish his task while on the field. These are the things that Pollard couldn’t grasp, he couldn’t focus on his job and make sure it got done each play. No Pollard wanted to run around as a free agent and attempt his kill shots, of which he’d miss half. And that doesn’t even touch on all the times he’d have over the top responsibility that he’d be late on.

  • October 12, 2009  - Stiv says:

With Flowers, they put him on the Cowboys best receiver, Creighton. Flowers and Page did an awesome job of shutting down their top threat. But Carr had some issues guarding Austin and Leggitt really blew two coverages of Austin that got Dallas back in the game and allowed them to win it in OT. On both of those long TD plays he should of had over the top help from Brown, which of course he didn’t get. Brown has good instincts, and is smart, but at this point in his career he just too slow. But that’s where we are, on the back end to inexperienced at some points and to old and slow at another. Add to that an anemic pass rush and it’s a wonder we’ve done as well as we have in some games.

  • October 12, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

I’m tired of people making excuses for our coaching staff, no1 on this team is tough(minus Dorsey,Flowers). I could care less about our offense, we have experienced what a good offense can give u, I wanna see guys get after some people like the old Marty days.Fine if u wanna say DJ is inconsistent than its the freakin coachs job 2 instill discipline thats what they are being paid for. We need somebody coaching our defense that will tell Haley “Look u just take care of the offense my players will show up on gameday”.

  • October 12, 2009  - ThunderChief says:

Spin it any way you want but the Chiefs still suck the wild one. Just finished watching the MNF great football game and any moron can see how far back in the pack the Chiefs are when you compare them to the likes of Miami or NYJ.

The announcers made an interesting comment about, “The bottom teams in the league are about the worst ever”, or something to that effect. True enough.

  • October 12, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Thunderchief I heard that comment they made, they were saying that the jets could have only 2 losses by a certain time becuase they have some bottom feeder teams coming up on their schedule, but it’s still true, the bottom feeders are the worse than they ever have been and there is more of them also.

Stiv, are you sure it was Carr I could of swore it was Washington who was blowing coverage on Austin and yea Brown sucks and shouldn’t have been kept over Pollard, would you rather have an old guy or a young guy blowing coverages? With Pollard at least he would have made contact with Austin on those plays, you know he did lead the team in tackles the past two years!

  • October 13, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Keep Brandon and DJ , they are good and getting better . At least in game’s ?

  • October 13, 2009  - Mark says:

Going for 2 at the end of regulation is asinine. Haley treated the question with the disdain it deserved.

  • October 13, 2009  - Mark says:

Instead of asking silly questions about 2 point conversions, a good reporter would be asking Todd Haley why Mike Brown is playing, when he is respnsible for so many long gains against us this year, and was directly responsible for Austin’s 2 long TD’s, and why exactly he was handed Pollard’s job when he can clearly no longer play.

  • October 13, 2009  - Michael says:

    It’s Dejuan Morgan time.

  • October 13, 2009  - Joebird Jackson says:

Brown isn’t near as reliable as we thought. Pollard missed way too many tackles, but he stil lead the team with 90+ tackles the last two seasons. I miss Pollard.

  • October 13, 2009  - MDChief says:

I’m telling you, Brown played crappy on Sunday, but Page has not been much better. Our safety play is poor, and it’s killing us. When you give up game changing plays, it is almost always the safety who allows it to go from 10 yards to 40+, and Page has played worse than Brown the first 4 games. My prediction before the game was we’d play them close win 3 of the next 4 and end up at about 500. I stand by it.
