Broncos Slap Mistake-Prone Chiefs

From Arrowhead Stadium

The overtime victory against the Steelers seems so long ago. When Ryan Succop’s field goal sailed through the uprights and the Chiefs had beaten the defending Super Bowl champions, all things seemed possible.

That was just 15 days ago when many thought the rebuilding club had its watershed moment.

Turns out, what happened that day said more about the Steelers than it did about the Chiefs. That is so very apparent after Sunday’s action in the NFL, when the Chiefs were crushed by Denver Broncos 44-13 and the Steelers lost their fourth game in a row, falling to the Raiders in Pittsburgh. Yes, the Raiders.

Since the victory, the Chiefs have been batted and bruised to the tune of 87-27 by the two best teams in the AFC West. They’ve turned the ball over seven times in these last two games and have scored just one touchdown per game.

On Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, nothing seemed possible against the Broncos. The offense was awful, the starting quarterback was pulled, the defense couldn’t stop the run and the special teams failed to execute a fake punt that started the momentum ball rolling in the wrong direction (right).

The Chiefs honored the late Derrick Thomas at half-time with the retirement of his No. 58. That may have been the only high point of the game for those Chiefs fans that showed up at Arrowhead.

As there always is, plenty of story lines showed themselves on this Sunday afternoon. Here are some of them:

Haley is no play caller. Pioli errored by letting him fire Chan and go it alone, he may have errored with Haley period. Pendergast and his system is a bust for sure. Player selection is still a big question as well.

Sorry to quote Denny on the Chiefs; “They are who we thought they where”

Please just try to keep the game close this week,
    go chefs?

I as to negative for most but I agree with your first paragraph. But I do not believe “They are who we thought they were”. This team while poor in talent, really stinks in management and coaching. Poili really missed in his acquisition of players, why, I do not know unless the 4 time Exec. of year was just smoke and mirrors. Coaching has been as bad a situation as we have ever seen. Haley went to the superbowl but looks like a loser to me. The golf coach has no self control, poor play calling, and based on the players, has no idea of who can play the game. On defense, forget it, there is not a coach worth keeping. Special Teams coach look good until recently. I really believe Cheap Hunt should, as a minimum, dump the coach and apologize to the fans and start the rebuild over again with a “real” head coach the fans and player can believe in.

el cid–I agree , Starting with QB (Matt) he is really lost –can’t find his receivers and blames the offence line for his inabitly to rember who to throw to .
    Brodie looked better …

I always try to look for positives…but it’s getting harder and harder to do.

Hali had a good game, I guess. That’s about it.

    Jim,

When did Cassel “blame the O-line” for anything? If he did, I sure missed it.

I love watching Hali wear Clady’s ass out yesterday, that was the only bright spot and Charles before he fumbled which I told some1 he would if given 2 many opportunities. Its funny how 2 rookie HC were jousting for a unproven QB in the offseason(Cassel). We got the “big tyme” stud in Cassel, opened up the bank for him and left Mcdaniels scrambling for anything. Well Mcdaniels sure as hell knows how 2 work with what he has unlike Haley or maybe we paid for the wrong guys in the offseason? Dont know, but this I do….u dont overthrow wideopen WR u either hit them in stride or underthrow them. Cassel blows he doesnt need talent around him b/c he wil still lose….he is not a leader but only a poser…can any1 tell me a time when Cassel lead a group of men 2 a Championship? Sad part is he wont be going anywhere for atleast 3 yrs…lmao….this is what u fans screamed for is change, well here it is. Its not pointing in the right direction from my view!

  • December 7, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

Oh and another thing…..why n the hell did Haley try a fake punt on our 25 yard line? That completely changed the momentum of the game, instead of being down 8 its like 24 or something…..What a great way 2 honor Derrick Thomas and his family Haley than 2 embarrass the team and yourself at home!

  • December 7, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

McDaniels took over a lot better team than Haley did, Alexthe”GREAT”. I would be willing to bet that if he had come here, and Haley had went to Denver…the records would likely be about the same.

And I would hardly call Orton “scrambling for anything” as a QB. The guy was decent in Chicago. Not a superstar, but gets the job done. He’s looking pretty good right now because: A) Denver has a good O-line B) They have a good running game C) They have good receivers and D) They have a Defense that keeps them in games. If Cassel had gone to Denver, I think he would be having the same success that Orton is having.

  • December 7, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

And I thought the fake punt was stupid, too.

But, you know what? It was one missed block from working…and would have went for a huge gain. Then everyone would have been talking about what a great play and a “ballsy” call it was.

  • December 7, 2009  - Chiefsfan_62 says:

Exactly right Mad Chief, and I would almost bet if Cassel was in Denver people would be talking Super Bowl. The kid is not great but he is good. I am tired of hearing all the, he over threw he threw behind…. How about all the balls that hit th recievers hands?? This group outside of Chambers, including Bowe 90% of the time SUCK!! I have never seen so many droped balls in a season it is pathetic

  • December 7, 2009  - el cid says:

I questioned the fake punt also UNTIL I thought about it. Haley believes his team is so much crap because he wants to fire them or does not play them or never coaches them to improve them. So I believe he felt he had to “steal” a play against the broncos to have a chance (remember the score was close but the chiefs were never in the game, broncos running wild against Dorsey). So I give him the fake punt (still believe he one of the worse coaches in chief’s history).

As for comparing the chiefs to the broncos. The broncos started a better team. The owner in Denver wants to win and we have Cheap Hunt. The GM had his HC before we got stuck with Pioli and Denver hired a DC (who moved the 2008 29th ranked def to 2009 5th ranked). Denver sighed numerous free agents and drafted guys who contributed to wins. The chiefs skipped on free agency and drafted god knows what or why. Haley went thru OTAs and training camp and then decided to go to the street for guys like Long to start games. So it is unfair to compare the two teams, one has an idea of what to do and one is crap.

  • December 7, 2009  - Harold C. says:

I don’t care what anybody says…the fake punt was idiotic. It screams incompetence. It might be the dumbest play I have ever seen. Heads should roll for that. Right now.

    I will always be a Chiefs fan…..but I’m tired.

Before we move on the the next game:

QUESTION: Does anyone “pay” for what the Chiefs put on the field in 09?

Pioli – no, he may have a bit of tarnish on his exec of year trophies but he gets more time.

Haley – what is your opinion, you know mine.

    OC – see above

DC – Pendergast got fired after making a superbowl and I see no reason to buck the trend after the vomit he put on the field in KC.

Special Teams – playing with leftovers of a bad roster, the coach should get another year.

Players – who, other than Hali, P, K, and CBs, is worth keeping? Other than monetary considerations, I do not want anyone kept but realize you cannot cut 49 of 53 but most could not find jobs in the NFL.

Owner – sorry we are stuck Hunt family so no real hope in this area. BUT Jackson County government better not give another penny to this organization (toss Glass and the royals in that also).

My two favorite people to defend are killing me right now. Haley and Cassel. Again, drops plagued Cassel (10!) but he missed on some throws and his two picks were inexcusable. The real culprit in this if we are blaming anyone is Pioli. I’m a big believer in building through the draft, but look at what Denver did. They saw that they had some holes to fill, they signed a bunch of free agents to fill them, and got rid of Cutler (controversial at the time) and stockpiled draft picks. Pioli in the mean time, signed some vets that just plain didn’t work out for one reason or another, and REACHED on Jackson when better players at positions of need were there staring him in the face in Curry and Monroe. In the meantime, our 100 million dollar D line got manhandled for darn near 250 rushing yards.

They need to actually spend some money this offseason on a couple of key FA’s and hope that they work out. Also, no more REACHING with top draft picks and take the best players available.

  • December 7, 2009  - Mad Chief says:

    I understand your points, Colby.

But I still say, it’s a lot easier for a playoff contender (Denver) to sign good FA’s…than it is for a team that has won 6 games in the two previous years, and is in “rebuilding” mode. That’s a big problem for Pioli, I believe. And with the team’s performance this year, it won’t be any easier this offseason. Good players want to play for good teams…when they have a choice, of course. That’s why we signed a lot of the guys we did. No one else wanted them. And the guys that didn’t make it here, went where? Home.

  • December 7, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

Mad Chief that isnt necessarily true. Players will play for any1 if the money is right and I dont think Pioli will open up the bank for players b/c he has a history of not doing so. Most of the time u see veteran players who’ve already recieved that big contract narrow thier decisions 2 playoff contending teams 2 play for in search of a ring. So in the end Pioli and Clark need 2 stop being a tight-ass when it comes 2 the money and start signing and drafting real playmakers and not just the size, height, wieght guys out of college!

  • December 7, 2009  - Adam says:

Guys, I hope you will be saying this when we will be winning. Pioli’s free agents have panned out. Has anyone seen chambers? Wow, the guy has been tearing it up the past few weeks. That’s with the fact that we don’t have much outside of him. Haley has done something Herm couldn’t, motivate Charles to be a potential superstar. Switched Hali to a better position and looked damn good yesterday.

You should give DL a pass the first year. Look at Dorsey, guy switched positions, and is really starting to turn it on. I’m excited for next season.
Drafting size, hieight weight guys? What are you smoking man? We didn’t draft Darrius Heyward Bey. Curry isn’t a 3-4 backer. Euguene monroe hasn’t been that good either. I’m ok with the jackson pick.
Also, in your comments about being tight asses. Look at the spend-thrifty redskins and tell me how they are doing.

  • December 7, 2009  - colby says:

Adam you make good points, and I certainly don’t wan the Chiefs to turn into a Redskins type of team, but they HAVE to do more. The best FA Pioli signed he brought in (Chambers) he brought in in the middle of the season. He only signed Bobby Engram and Terrance Copper during the offseason. Engram didn’t have anything left, Copper is a good special teamer but that’s about it. Lelie and Toomer were preseason experiments. Wade and Long were signed in season. You think they wish they’d addressed WR BEFORE camp? That’s just one position.

Also, Dorsey and Jackson need to pick it up. I did not like either of these selections because they passed on elite college LT’s when they took them. Clady and Monroe. NOW, Clady got roughed up by Hali, but Clady also didn’t allow a sack until his 23rd game. He’d look good in a Chiefs uniform with Albert at RG. What’s done is done, but we need these LSU kids to pick it up!

  • December 8, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Right mad chief because everyone wanted to go and play with McDaniels, they all knew how well of a Head coach he was. Your thoughts are flawed, the Bronco’s defense blew hard last year, and they fixed it this year with a couple of FA’s. The chiefs didn’t fix anything, like I said 1 more year with Herm and the chiefs would have looked alot better this year, plus there wouldn’t have been any cassell to worry about. Thigpen looked way better at this time of the year last year then Cassel has, they screwed up, another Grbac for Gannon deal in KC!!
