Camp Practice Update 8/5 A.M.

From River Falls, Wisconsin

Todd  Haley spent a lot of time paying attention to the team’s wide receivers during the Wednesday morning session and based on his commentary throughout the practice, he didn’t like what he saw.

“Come on Jake (O’Connell) you’ve got to know the whole picture.”

“Stay off the ground. I don’t want to see us get an interception because you are laying on the ground.”

“I’m tired of the picks and dropped balls.”

That was the tone of what was a spirited full pads practice under brillant sunshine here at UW-River Falls.

On back-to-back plays in one drill, WR Mark Bradley dropped an easy catch against air, and WR Amani Toomer made a difficult catch. WR Dwayne Bowe fell down several times while making his cuts, so did Toomer and WR Bobby Engram. CB Ricardo Colclough had an interception of QB Tyler Thigpen when WR Jeff Webb fell down. Later, CB Londen Fryar picked off a QB Matt Cassel pass intended for Engram.

The offense and defense got after it in drills for the running game, with some good contact during the session. The passing game remains hit and miss, no matter who is throwing the ball.

Here are some observations and nuggets of information from the workout:

- Missing from the practice was ILB Monty Beisel. He was not part of the rehab session either. In Tuesday’s practice, Beisel took a blow when he went to tackle RB Jackie Battle, so that might be a lingering problem. As usual Haley would not address the situation.

- OLB Mike Vrabel did not take part in the practice, working with the bike patrol over in the area that Haley has dubbed “No Man’s Land.” Nothing serious, just a practice off for the veteran.

- Also on the rehab-bike team for this workout were: LBs Wes Dacus and Demorrio Williams, RB Kolby Smith, TE Brad Cottam, S DaJuan Morgan and OL Wade Smith.

- LG Brian Waters did all the practice work with the exception of one-on-one pass protection. When the lines went there, Waters snapped the ball for the quarterbacks in the seven-on-seven drill.

- In that seven-on-seven, CB Brandon Carr picked off a Cassel throw with very good coverage.

- Andy Studebaker replaced Vrabel with the first defense at OLB, opposite Tamba Hali.

- K Ryan Succop was three-for-three on his FGs. He made the first one as the Chiefs went to a hurry up situation to get the FG team on the field and set up.

- CB Brandon Carr picked off a Cassel pass in the seven-on-seven drill.

- During the team work session, Battle had several very nice runs, showing good speed and power. Two of those runs came on back to back plays over the right side of the No. 1 defense and that would be DE Glenn Dorsey and OLB Tamba Hali.  RB Jamaal Charles also had a couple of nice runs, breaking a sweep for what would  have been big yardage.

- The Chiefs went with a short-yardage session, with the offense facing a 3rd-and-1 play. The offense appeared  to convert on all six snaps, including a play where Charles burst through the line for wh at would have been a big gainer.

- Again, after practice there were seven players catching kicks off the ball machine: Rodney Wright, Quinten Lawrence, Jackie Bates, Charles, Maurice Leggett, Fryar and Carr.

Veteran with a day off, huh……

Thomas? cry baby Waters? just Vrabel. huh…

I thought maybe Vrabel used and excuse to sit one out. But id like to think he wouldnt do that.

P.S. JACKSON, QUITE BEING GREEDY AND GET YOUR ASS TO CAMP!! He is going to be the next Jamarcus Russel…or however you spell it

Hey Bob if you are reading this and can remember when the time comes, it would be good to know what distances Succop is missing/making from. Seems like you were more diligent with this last camp.

    Thanks Bob,

I’m not really sure what to think about these camp updates. It seems like our defense is making strides to become better but maybe it just it’s just an illusion because our offense is so bad.

How do you compare this team with others in which you have covered in the past?

OK, I’m back a little earlier than advertised, but not to get deep into the various issues but to perhaps ‘advertise’ them:

re: COLBY and the registering of posters. Excellent points made and I’ll comment shortly.

re: Bob’s comments on the future of this board which I also, was encouraged by and similarly, will comment further.

re: Haley and his way along with Pioli and his method of building a team. Again, (altogether now: ‘Will comment further’)

re: The signing of Tyson Jackson.

I’m getting my head around all the above and will hopefully offer something of considerable substance early tomorrow with Bob’s first posting of that day.

Meantime, my Chiefs bros and sisters? It’s all good and we’re on the road back.

Succop went out in that rush situation and hit one from 50 plus the other day…seems most attempts are around 35-40 however.

I must say the falling down is getting ridiculous, the DB’s seem to be dominating our weak WR’s…Not sure if its good or bad, ill go with bad when Colcolough is picking off passes…thats two for him that came off a guy being knocked over. Or at least he dropped an easy pick 6.

Makes you wonder if Haley is seriously pushing for a Boldin type trade to go down…

  • August 5, 2009  - Scott says:

Rin, you are prejudiced…and a bigot.

In case you don’t know what that means, I’ll let Webster explain it to you:

prejudice: (1) : preconceived judgment or opinion (2) : an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge. b) : an instance of such judgment or opinion. c) : an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual, a group, a race, or their supposed characteristics.

bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance.

That explains your “daily spew” to a T. Here’s an idea…throw in a FACT now and then. And perhaps something NEW once in awhile…so you can stop the constant beating of that dead horse you refer to as brilliant opinion. Try it…and maybe then, you won’t look like such an ass. You’re bringing down the average IQ around here tremendously. Makes us ALL look bad.

Well sounds as if the vet WR picks were needed or or CB’s are superstars hehehe. No I think our CBs are good but not that good. WRs need some help glad Pioli delivered. Not sure who said it but I hope one of our younger guys can step up and take Toomer or Engram off the starting 3 but think it would be alright to have one on the bench. But Bradley, Bowe and company keep playing like they are we may have a whole slue of vet.WRs. Hey whoever wants to work and play put them in or sign who will. Like what I am seeing so far from the Coaches on up and alot of the players it seems pretty positive so far.

  • August 5, 2009  - gorillafan says:

yeah, I dont see Toomer being a backup at all. He will be a start, so will Bowe, and id put ingram in there too.

  • August 5, 2009  - get real says:

If Toomer and Engram are starters, does that make Bowe an overpaid backup who might have been badly coached by herm? Dorsey is said to have a chronic knee condition from back in college. If you remember, carl touted this guy the november before the draft. Better hope I am full of it otherwise, another set back.

  • August 5, 2009  - Scott says:

    get real,

Bowe is not a back-up. He’s a guy with a TON of potential to be a monster receiver in this league. Two problems, though. He has trouble hanging onto the ball (concentration, I believe)…and he was brought in under Herm’s “Country Club” style of practicing. Haley will get him straightened out, though. He’s knows a thing or two about receivers. Also, some “mentoring” from Toomer and Engram should help. D Bowe hasn’t had that the last two seasons - someone at his position to “look up to” for work ethic and etc.

As far as Dorsey goes? From what I’ve read, his biggest problem is that he came into camp overweight and out of shape.

al(ex)…Rin feels your pain; well, not really He doesn’t because Rin is impervious to said, but it sounded heroic, & I wanted to give you more salve for those 3rd degree ‘Q’ burns.

Speed is NOT enough: the Chiefs had Jimmy Hines - a 9.1 100 yard dash world class sprinter in 1970 - he failed here in KC as well as in MIA & OAK, among other places. Ditto for Clyde ‘The Glide’ Glossen, a 9.2 sprinter that same year… nyet.

Time will tell but Rin still believes QL will be coming to a DV list near you sometime this fall…

“Dorsey is said to have a chronic knee condition from back in college. If you remember, carl touted this guy the november before the draft.”

    - as did MOST EVERY other team; I was impressed by the former CEO/GM/Prez about as much as I am the vacuous ramblings ‘Scottie the Blog Snobbie’, but in Carl’s case he was not alone his lunacy.

“If toomer and engram are starters, does that make Bowe an overpaid backup who might have been badly coached by Herm?”

    - yes - if Bowe plays like he has to date with all his inconsistency he could well be a backup. has no sense of humor whatsoever appears so Dwayne’s buttfangers may well lead him to the bench.

By the way, if you want to blame Herm for Bowe & everything else 2008, then turnabout being fair play we shall blame & for the poor coaching to date of Q Lawrence and all the other WRs - a specialty - and the holdout of Ty Jackson on ;shock:, just as folk always blame Carl when he is the GM as such.

Can’t have it both ways… only Scottie ‘The Blog Snobbie’ can see and talk out of both ends of his a*s-hat at the same time…
