Chiefs Deal Tank

The Chiefs traded NT Tank Tyler to the Carolina Panthers Monday evening.

In return, they will get the Panthers fifth-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. Based on Carolina’s season to date, that looks like a high spot in the fifth round.

Tyler came to the Chiefs as a third-round draft choice in 2007 out of North Carolina State. The big man became expendable because of the play of Ron Edwards on the nose, along with his problems of making the adjustment from the 3-4 to the 4-3 defense.

He got only a handful of plays in Sunday’s game against the Redskins. Tyler started the first two games on the nose, but then lost the job to Edwards. He’s credited with 22 tackles on the season.

The Panthers have been trying to upgrade their defensive tackle situation since starter Maake Kemoeatu suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the first training camp practice.

“Tank is a  young defensive tackle who we think will fit in well with us,” Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told the Charlotte Observer. “He has good size and athletic ability and we are excited to have him join the Carolina Panthers.”

The move leaves open a spot on the Chiefs 53-man active roster. The NFL deadline for trades is Tuesday afternoon.

wonder what we got for him, atleast a 4th right? hopefully a third.

guess a 5th rounder for a former 3rd rounder. I still think we should have got atleast a 4th. O well

As soon as I heard the news I said to myself, “it better be for at least a 4th.” I guess a 5th isn’t all that bad, but I would feel better about it if we had ANYbody else to back up Edwards. One NT on the roster isn’t going to cut it.

They may be in the market for another NT now. Unless they think that Dorsey can play some there but since he’s been effective so far at DE, they may not want to push their luck. Not sure if there are any decent stop gaps or developmental guys out there who could do it. New England had Terdell Sands for about a week and he’s a big ugly grunt. Maybe they look at him?

Hope they make another trade whether it be for pick stockpiling or for another player. There are still ways to make this team better. Tank isn’t a huge loss in my eyes as he was just another disappointing D lineman drafted by Carl. Glad they found a way to get another pick. We’ll need all the picks we can get in 2010!

Another high Herm pick bites the dust. At least we got something for this one. I knew Tank’s days were numbered, when earlier in the season at a presser, Haley described what’s needed at the NT position in the 3-4, and mentioned nastiness, intensity, etc, and then when asked about Tank, in his best Parcells sarcasm, said that Tank “seems like a nice guy”. At the time of his benching, Tank was leading or right near the top, among all NFL interior linemen in tackles, so it just proves how meaningless tackle stats often are. He had a good motor, and tried hard, but rarely got penetration, making plenty of tackles downfield. Ron Edwards is a decent rotation player, but not a starting NFL NT, and he’s all we currently have, so either we’re in the market for one, hopefully NOT for a draft choice, or we shift someone like Magee over for some temporary relief, although he’s not a NT either.

KC had 3 DT’s in the building taking a look at them a couple of weeks back. Wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up picking one up.

This leaves one spot on the 53 man roster and one on the practice squad available. You also got to remember that Kolby Smith is coming off of the PUP list this week as well, so they are going to need a spot for him in there.

I think Richardson is going back to the PS, we are going to sign a different DT/NT and someone else is going to get the boot to make room for Kolby. Possibly one of our other 4 RB’s.

Today/this week is going to be interesting!

It would behoove some of you (colby) to get a grasp on how our version of the 3-4 is supposed to work.

They want to be able to put their NT in there next year, so we freed up a spot while getting value for the guy we dump.

We took advantage of a team that was a little desperate during the season. A 5th for a former 3rd who hasn’t really produced, wasn’t starting, and was somewhat unwanted by his team is a pretty good deal.

Although I liked Tank and was still hopeful for him, I think the logic of the move makes sense.

Hopefully, if this is a prelude to another high DT draft pick, we actually hit this time.

i agree uncuffed tank has not produced as a cheif, im glade to be getting rid of him, quit frankly im sick and tired of all thees herm draft busts thats on our team the more we get ride off the better

yea because the best DT we have is actually on the end right now… Tell me Dorsey hasn’t looked alot better this year 1 more year in the NFL and he is starting to produce, I wonder what he would do this year in a 4-3…

Tank may turn out to be a decent DT in a 4-3 defense, hopefully is successful…

  • October 20, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

uncuffed, but how do we know that the Panthers didn’t take advantage of a 1-5 team that wasn’t starting a 3rd round DT and figured they could get him on the cheap??

  • October 20, 2009  - TailgateCouch says:

I’ve got no problem with this move, but who the heck is our back up NT??

  • October 20, 2009  - Blake says:

they are going to sign a backup NT

“It’s not bad, but it’s not good.”

    Good Luck Tank

Pretty sure I know how a 3-4 works boss. Although I’d love to hear your version of our version.

Good for Tank and good for the Chiefs. To bad they did not move more guys for picks, I know they need a partner but one can dream. If I remember correctly wasn’t Dave Sout ( spelling) a 6 rounder. Maybe we can get a player from the draft?
