Chiefs Open The Same Way They Finished

From Baltimore, Maryland

On a sunny, muggy Indian summer afternoon, the Pioli/Haley Era planted its first flag in the mountain that is the National Football League.

The outcome wasn’t pretty, as the Chiefs fell 38-24 to the Baltimore Ravens before 71,099 at M&T Bank Stadium.

In the franchise’s 50th season of play, the 2009 team made plays in all three facets of the game, but not nearly enough to beat a good team. The Ravens certainly are a good club, a contender not only for the playoffs, but the league championship. They got a very good game from second-year QB Joe Flacco.

There’s a lot to cover from this game and here’s what you can find here:

  • GAME STORY: the Chiefs made changes, but the results are the same.
  • COMMENTARY: Are the Chiefs learning how to win, or learning how to lose?
  • BRODIE CROYLE: Filled in for Matt Cassel and did a good job.
  • DEFENSE: Living and dying by the blitz.
  • L.J. SHUT DOWN AND NOTES

If the Chiefs lose next Sunday to OAK – which they will – the 2009 club will have matched exactly the 2007 start wherein Chiefs also went 0-4 preseason, and 0-2 regular to start the year.

Suggesting that there has been: “NO CHANGE – NO CHANGE AT ALL!” in 2009 … but then we already knew that.

So I figured out who “Rin Tin Tin” is…

He is the blogger from: https://steveshaikus.blogspot.com

He is the same person who used to post as “Herm’s the Man” on some of the other forums.

Read here what he is trying to accomplish with his sick game:

“I am not going to explain a whole lot, but my name in this thread is Herm’s the Man. Herm’s the Man is some moron who posts the exact thing on every story (relevant or not) every day on SI.com, along with his retarded half brother, Paul Levy. I am parodying his name, but it quickly turns from a discussion about whom the 2nd wide receiver is to everyone calling everyone else gay over and over. Observe:”

Time yet a’noher chorus “look what they done to Rin’s team, Ma…”

This season is unfolding ‘just’ as Rin suspected- NAY- KNEW IT WOULD! The ugly 0-5 mark s is but precursor to the 11 more to come…this farce has a face only Chiefsfandumb could love.

‘check’ & ’search’ are so similar Carl P and Herm that it no doubt scares the hook, line and sinker crowd didst bought into the formers hooey no end.

All the flowery promises, all the over-hype – ALL come a cropper nee to head in a winless pileup on our KC midwestern gridiron – and coming soon to a blog near you – like right now and as in this one – a hale & hearty “I Rin told all ya alls it’d be this way.” He is prescient – He is good – He Rin be favor & disdain at One… ‘He is’ RIN TIN TIN! And… He was right all along as willst e’er be!

This week’s hometown downer nee opener resulting ‘nother loss will prove to be the only game until December Rin’s Chiefs would have had a chance to prevail in. Alas, aft yesterday’s dismal performa non grata any chance be now but wishful thinking. Indeed – the 2009 Kansas City Chiefs are DOOMED.

Well I’ll say the Chiefs as a team did better than I thought for us to put 24 on the Ravens I would have bet against that everytime.

Now first while its only game one Scott not sure if your reading but the crow is being plucked not ready to eat but after a 11 for 20 yd performance even with our O-line its being prepared. We need to go out and get a starting RB. J.Charles is a specialty back and Battle is a relief runner he is good on special teams also. Like I said its only one but LJ should be on the short list with our defensive and offensive lines. We need a NT baaaad. I would have DC Pendergast on a short leash also. Romeo, Romeo where art thou Romeo Crennel.

And over all Baltmore was a Playoff team last year not just a squeaker they were in and had a shot played really well so I not too disappointed in the Chiefs for as Haley put it trying to win ugly and they almost pulled it off. So not Bad Chiefs but not bad doesn’t win games.

  • September 14, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Yea, I think the ravens took it a little easy yesterday, almost as if they would just walk over the chiefs, the chiefs showed up and played, but again they couldn’t stop the run which was the killer in the 4th quarter, the Defensive line didn’t get much push in the 4th quarter, which I would have thought would have been different this year with all of the conditioning the team has went through…

  • September 14, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

    Also, I suck. Big time.

  • September 14, 2009  - Brak says:

Best part of the game (besides the blocked punt and DJ’s interception)….Haley chewing out Brodie on the sideline for calling a time out…classic.

A much more entertaining game than I thought. If this was last years team, it would have been MUCH worse….thank goodness Herman Edwards is not coaching anymore.

  • September 14, 2009  - Anonymous says:

The thing you have to like is how well coached they were. As soon as they get the rest of Herm’s players out that are ineffective they will win. After D.J.’s interception, and strong return I realized that if Herm was still here the fieldgoal team would be on the field after three straigh fullback dives into the middle of the line.

  • September 14, 2009  - SG says:

“All the flowery promises, all the over-hype…”

Not quite the 38-point spread you projected Rin…and until you take Scott’s bets, you really should tone down the arrogance – as you appear rather cowardly to some of us regulars.

“He was right all along as willst e’er be!”

    Rin’s 38-0 projection was weak
no glory in which for him to bask
wouldn’t step up to the Scott’s challenge
    Rin’s courage brought to task

    So his sorry 0-16 guess
his hopes’ back on which to fall…
Rin has to rely on the Raiders
Does he have the courage enough – this game to call?

    My projection: Chiefs 24-Raindeer 16

Santa Claus isn’t giving you a present Rin. 1-1 will be the record and your credibility…(insert toilet-flush sound here)

Will Shields is on 810 and saying good things about the Chiefs. I mention this because he PLAYED the game, which is important to Lassie. In fact he made the pro bowl numerous times. Interesting fact, Todd and Herm have played in the same amount of pro bowls.

  • September 14, 2009  - Scott says:

Rin is nothing more than a common Troll, who only exists here because Bob doesn’t have any controls in place.

This very same Troll prowls Yahoo as “Hermstheman” spouting the same crap. A little more toned down there…because they DO have contols, but are lax on enforcing them.

Most other reputable sites have contols in place and/or Moderators…like AP. They don’t put up with BS from Trolls like Rin. And why Bob does is completely beyond me.

  • September 14, 2009  - Josh says:

    Scott,

Maybe the reason Bob puts up with it is the same reason that some reality shows keep the controversial people…even when they should have gone home. Whether we like to admit it or not, we all at one point or another allow Rin to rabbit trail us from the topic at hand. Who knows? Maybe Bob’s site makes $$ from the number of hits it makes? If that’s the case, Rin is good for business…as much as I’d hate to admit it.

The TEAM showed up and put up a fight. Not the best fight, the type to win, but the type to show they have determination. I am happy to say that I saw some improvements and I believe we will see more soon. Mr. irrelevant sure was relevant wasn’t he? There were flashes of good effort all day, just not enough put together to win. This was game one of many under the new Coach. Rome was not built in a day, and many good TEAMS were not great from day one.

It is all about the TEAM….and the right 53!

    In Coach Haley I trust!!
    you should too!

  • September 14, 2009  - el cid says:

One last post by me before the “24 hr rule”, if the OL cannot be fixed in 09 the team can realistically lose every game this year. Add to that LJ just does not seem to be about to step up. But my real disappointment is the Defense. Talk about a unit not prepared for the Ravens and considering that Pioli/Haley spent most of their time, efforts, and money on it, a real flop for game #1.

The Raiders are coming and Denver won Sunday,we have a lot on our plate for next Sunday. Some kind of Offense, any kind. Defense Line got to produce pressure. Special Teams needs to repeat and if possible improve. That is asking a lot but that is what I do, ASK A LOT. Need a win, BADLY.

Then Rin is a one-man money making machine, I guess…since he puts up more than half the posts here.

But if you look back, there are quite a number of people who don’t come here anymore…and I’d bet the Troll is the reason why. Good Chiefs fans. REAL Chiefs fans. Guys who added a lot of good opinions to this place. I would think that would concern Mr. Gretz. I guess I must be wrong. I certainly would not want a Troll like that associated with MY site. Especially a site created especially for Chiefs fans. But it’s a free country, I suppose.

  • September 14, 2009  - B in SC says:

Interesting comments on several threads yesterday and today. Not sure I watched the same game as many others. What I saw:

Solid coaching. No confusion on their part, no b-s, good adjustments.

Bad defense. Sorry, I understand the whole offense not moving the ball thing, but give up 501 yards and….you suck. Tired? Stop them on 3rd down once in a while and get off the field. That rarely happened. 2 punts. Flowers doesn’t make a difference there. Stop the run and get some pressure. Sound familiar? Just not enough talent on defense yet. LB’s really, really suck.
    Mike Brown still has it.

Croyle was good. Nervous and a little jumpy early, but settled down and threw some strikes with pressure in his face. Great throw to Sean Ryan for the TD. Falling back with a defender under his chin. Not sure why anyone thinks Cassel would have done better. Is he made of teflon so defenders can’t sack him? He hasn’t done anything in a Chief’s uniform to think his performance will be an improvement over Croyle.

MVP was Colquit. Without his punts in the first half to flip field position, we get trounced. Giving them a short field would have been disastrous.

Are they making progress? Who knows. I really liked Haley’s demeanor on the sideline. I think he is a winner. Not sure how much he can do with this level of talent, but he won’t accept “progress” through the season. He wants to win. I like it. This roster will change some more in the next week or so, but I don’t see many wins coming. Too much of a gap from our talent to the next level. Coaching and schemes just can’t cover that bridge.

“I think the ravens took it a little easy yesterday”

    - indeed they did…despite coming out flat with an intensity that but matched KC’s – poor – the Ravens still DOMINATED KC throughout the game.

32 1st downs? 501 yards? 38 points? And it could have been MUCH worse – BALT could’ve well put up 50+ points? KC’s defense? Crazy man – INSANE! As Bob G said re: ALL THOSE YARDS, an worse showing than any last year, even the loss to BUFF not as embarrassing.

The Chiefs D looked liked a guy caught revolving door…and on offense, other than Brodie Croyle, Dwayne Bowe, Brian Waters, Branden Albert et al – Herm’s Chiefs- they STUNK it up too as in s old style homemade Lindberger cheese…16 more weeks of this could make Chiefsdumb go blind!

but he has to take the time to do that, so let em…its really pathetic but thats on him…personally I dont care..

I do care about the chiefs though

and I will say the only huge disappointment was albert, he really stunk it up….there may be a move to guard coming next season.

“and I will say the only huge disappointment was albert, he really stunk it up….”

We’ll have to wait and see if the players perform better or if we all get to say “I told you so” regarding this or that. End result has me encouraged – much better 38-24 than 34-0.

Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness (Rin calling Haley bad and Herm good)

Romans 16:18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. (General Rin dribble)

Obviously folks, we are in all reality dealing with SA-Tin Tin here.

Matthew 16:23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of Herm.”

Looking backwards is fun and easy. Tony and Allen still on the Chiefs might have changed the entire game but both are gone, as in adios. Who to blame, hum? Nobody because it cannot be changed. We need to build new and unfortunately we may have run out of time for 09. With the lack of preformance Sunday, I am still looking forward to the raider’s coming to town next Sunday. Hope something will change.

  • September 14, 2009  - alex k says:

in the end the Tony trade is the best move….sorry but we arent a playoff team, and gonzo was going to retire after a year, two MAX..a 2nd round pick next year, that lets KC possibly make a move…and gives them another top 60 pick…which could include a long term fix at the o-line…Tight End TG won how many playoff games in KC? zero.

kc will move albert inside next year and draft a LT, just an opinion.

  • September 14, 2009  - Tenand6 says:

The Chiefs have begun when where they ended…which is normal. The question is, how will they end this year? They started in a hole and no one thought they could be in a game with the Ravens. We need to see how the Chiefs build. The last group spiraled downward— maybe good reasons maybe not. But they ended 2-14. Let’s see where the Chiefs end this year and then compare. Seems more “apples to apples” to me.

  • September 14, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

If you think the Chiefs lost the game in the 4th quarter, I don’t think you were watching the whole game. The chiefs had no business winning that game. The Ravens were in complete control for most the game (sans the one good offensive drive in the 4th quarter). But it’s week one of a whole new team and approach. I’m just looking forward to positive growth. Something we haven’t seen in 4 years.

  • September 14, 2009  - And now a word from our sponsor: says:

They can build on what they did in this game. They competed when everyone thought that they couldn’t compete. I’m encouraged by what happened. They just need to build on it now and not start a new foundation every game.

Anonymous said “Obviously folks, we are in all reality dealing with SA-Tin Tin here.”

LOL….that is funny….and remember…..real humor has an element of truth to it.

  • September 14, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

Tenand6, we can see but its not apples to apples.
1.No Carl Peterson + to Haley
2.Different personel + to Haley (Keeps the best Herm players inserts best he can get for now)
    3.Harder Schedule – Haley
4.DC playing scheme he wants to run + Haley
5.Haley calling own offense + Haley

Just hard to see how you could compare the two. Just overlooking last years rebuild to this year I would say Haley has an advantage his team is not as young which while I liked the youth, Herm had too much you have to have some vets to bring them along. So I like what Pioli/Haley are doing overall more than Peterson/Herm and I hope they get it done. I also hope they are allowed the time to get it done. It would be nice to have a coach around for 8 to 10yrs and not switching schemes coaches and players every year which doesn’t give you a chance to win. Yes having a winning franchise causes Cordinators and coaches to turn over but not entire staffs year to year as well you don’t loose 30% of your players.

  • September 14, 2009  - Scott says:

    el cid,

Where I personally saw it, was an interview with Pioli a few days ago. The whole context of the thing was:

“One of the interesting things about this roster, we talked about it last night, when we put it together and looking at it and seeing a lot of new faces, some familiar faces. One of the things that stood out to me, first of all, I think the roster overall is improved. At the top end, the middle and at the back of the roster.

“One thing that hit me is the number of new players. There’s 21 new players on the 53 man roster. And I was looking back at the names of some of the players we’ve released since I’ve arrived here.

“One of the things that stood out to me was the fact that there were 30 players that were on the roster last year in some sort of role that are no longer here as of today Of those 30 players that were on the roster, only two of those players have found new jobs in the NFL.

“The other 28 don’t have jobs at this point in time.

“It’s a bit of a statement that the roster needed to be improved or changed, when you have a number of players who leave here, and they’re also not finding jobs necessarily from the other 31 teams. It’s clear there’s been a lot of change here and change needed to occur.”

The whole thing is at the link below (you may have to cut & paste)…including a link where you can listen to the entire radio interview. Enjoy.

    Here’s a ing towel for alex k…

Another failed draft choice, or if it be WR Terrence Copper yet another failed free agent signee his. That will make 72% of ’search’ s ‘09 signings that have BUSTED!

  • September 14, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

    el cid,

If you look at the Week 17 Chiefs roster and the practice squad (active and inactive roster is available here: https://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/29771/CIN_Gamebook.pdf; for practice squad cuts see this page: https://www.nfl.com/teams/kansascitychiefs/transactions?team=KC), you’ll see that it’s true that 30 of these players are not longer with the Chiefs. Several (such as Pat Thomas, Rocky Boiman, Ingle Martin)ended up in training camps for other teams, but only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Babin have actually been signed to a practice squad or 53-man roster.

I imagine that a few ex-Chiefs, such as Bernard Pollard and Damion McIntosh, will be signed by teams over the next week or two.

  • September 14, 2009  - el cid says:

IL Fan is probably correct about exChiefs but I bought Herm’s koolaide that the rebuild was mostly complete and many players were ready for NFL play. We changed coaches and plans but we do not have enough NFL grade players with the current roster. Nobody in the media was complaining about the lack of good players and if you look at Sundays game. Hali, Croyle and a couple of others played at an acceptable level but there are a bunch of bums that need to get out of KC. There are a whole lot of guys who will not be on this roster by 2010.

  • September 14, 2009  - ED says:

    a. one trick pony
    b. broken record
    c. mentally challanged
    d. Herm’s boy

please pick one, important while working up your psych profile to see how you view yourself. Bad doggie

one other thing, did you see Demorrio Williams, definently a Herm boy, get abused by the Ravens.
Demotion or not, D.J. is the better linebacker, and wasn’t he drafted by the prev. coach? Now back to Monday night football, for me that is, Lassie just lay there and lick yourself

This will keep you awake all nite. First impressions of Raiders, their offense seems to work more than miss and their defense is competitive. Do not know if they will win or maybe self destruct but our offense looks weak and who on our defense will keep up with their TE. Sunday could be really bad for us. i am not sure the Chiefs are ready for the beginning of the 09 season.

  • September 14, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

El cid I agree, the raiders O-line looks improved over last year, especially how they are pushing the Chargers defensive line around, the chiefs could be in for a long day, McFadden and Bush are looking pretty good and Russell isn’t looking like the big dummy he was last year, so far though, things can change. If the chiefs can’t stop the run it will be a long day and if they commit to stopping the run they could get gouged by the passing game.

I think Al may have made the best trade this year by aquiring Seymour, he hasn’t even practiced with the team and he has already more sacks (2) then the whole chiefs team, Pioli couldn’t have made a deal to bring in someone who could make an immediate impact?? And Im not talking about someone on the sale rack (vrabel)…

    uugghh… It may be a long year…
