Chiefs/Cassel Practice 9/9 Updated

From the Truman Sports Complex

QB Matt Cassel was back on the practice field this morning as the Chiefs went through their Wednesday session in preparation for Sunday’s regular-season opener against Baltimore.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said Cassel was able to get through practice with no problems. But he was unwilling to commit to whether Cassel will play Sunday against Baltimore. “That’s going to be a situation that we evaluate as the week goes on,” said Haley. “I don’t know that we’ll have an answer until right before the game.”

Haley allowed that Cassel would be listed as questionable when the team’s first  injury report comes out on Wednesday.

In the short window where practice is open to the media, Cassel did pretty much the same work he did during Monday’s practice. He worked that injured left knee in the position drills, although he did  not take part in any drill that required movement beyond a pass drop. Cassel worked some on hand-off timing with the running backs and then threw to the wide receivers.

Just as he did on Monday, Cassel did not look brisk in his pass drops. He did seem willing to put more pressure  on his left knee on the follow through, however.

Cassel was not in the locker room when it was open to the media, but Brodie Croyle was and he’s preparing this week to start, but doesn’t know whether that will happen. “As a backup, you always have to prepare to start,” said Croyle. “I”m doing the same things that I will do next week, or will do in week No. 10. If the opportunity comes, you have to be ready.”

Todd Haley had the entire roster working in the full pads practice that was held outdoors under cloudy skies and muggy conditions.

On the club’s injury report to the league, two other players were listed with Cassel as limited in practice participation: CB Brandon Flowers (shoulder) and RB Jackie Battle (illness).

Haley talked about the Ravens after practice and called them “a three-headed monster.”

“I think they are obviously one of the great defenses over the last decade,” Haley said. “Year-in and year-out even though they’ve had to plug different players into different roles each year they’ve come in and played defense.  It’s easy to talk about defense when you talk about Baltimore but I think what’s changed with Baltimore is now the offense is an offense that gives you something to deal with. They’ve got a very good quarterback; they’ve got three tremendous runners; they’ve got one of the top tight ends in the league and they’ve got three receivers that are very good receivers. They have a very physical offensive line. It’s easy to talk about the defense but the offense is now here without a doubt.

“Special teams, they’re one of the better special teams groups in the league. It’s obvious with coach (John) Harbaugh it is his area of expertise and it shows with this team.

“I think (Baltimore’s) a three-headed monster as far as I’m concerned.”

    - one ne’er truly looks good where dropped passes be the crux (’Q’ sans the ‘I’ ’showing up’ again a football lack, appears.) Mutt so badly injured a braced knee could not even rouse within himself a brisk retort to the man with no hands? The lack of leadership hi$ be killing the team…show some EMOTION! And then, alas, willst be too late for you silly fellow…dead at 27 near if not so much ‘pon the shores Potomac, not far from where dubbya (as in George) threw that money across – bad bet – life yours end shores a rocky as in non-existent line, offensively challenged yours…

Here’s something from PFT – Off-topic, but possibly interesting to readers of this blog:

    https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/09/should-the-cardinals-be-worried/

    Of note:
“Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has downplayed any concern, but Kurt Warner also bemoaned the team’s lackluster preseason in a radio interview. He seemed to hint the team could use a little butt-kicking, like the one former offensive coordinator Todd Haley used to administer.

“I am not going to put [our struggles] all on Todd but he was very much a vocal, in-your-face, challenging type of coach that would really push guys,” Warner said. “The one thing that I appreciated about Todd is that he pushed us to be great and he wasn’t worried about being our best friend. He just wanted us to respect him for making us better players.”"

    Scott,

    Don’t mention it.

If you click through to the posted interview transcript you’ll see that Warner was probably not in love with Haley, but recognizes that sometimes players need to be MOTIVATED to perform their best.

The Cardinals are also 0-4 (thus the soul-searching on their part) so I’m not sure what the “better than 0 and 4″ comment means.

And the “one thing” statement was Warner’s; not Whisenhunt’s.

And don’t mock Brenda; she’ll track you down.

Derrick Johnson has been a major under-achiever so far in his career, I have been waiting for DJ to have a “breakout year” for the past 2 seasons, it just has not happened. He doesnt appear to have that killer instinct you want in your LB’s, yeah I said it..HE’S SOFT!! Little to no consistency in his game to game play. He looks like the beast we all wanted/expected one game and the next you wouldnt even know hes on the field. Haley wants consistency and DJ has been one of the least consistent players we have on D. “you cant have YO-YO players” sound familiar? Im not surprised DJ has fallen to where he is listed on the depth chart.

    hey alexthegreat

the best ARE playing…DJ makes many mistakes, he has great ability, however say we took him round 5, would you still look at him as a starting LB? I wouldnt….Mays showed more in 4 games than DJ did take away his once every 4 games when he makes a few plays…BP proved numbers mean nothing…Heck, listen to baltimore, they are impressed by Tamba Hali, The Coach said he can do it all…thats quite the compliment…

I wouldnt resign DJ….no way…not for what he would want…and the best players are those that fit in the scheme, AND play within the rules of the scheme….DJ wasnt doing that, or who knows really…but he wouldnt sit DJ just to play Demorrio Williams unless there was a very good reason.

  • September 9, 2009  - Scott says:

I agree, Alex. This idea that some people have…that Haley isn’t going to start the better players? Pure BS. The man makes his living on wins and losses…and he’s going to let a better player sit on the bench? Come on…be serious.

I’m sure all of this is going to get worked out. But it has only been a few weeks in game-type situations as these new coaches have taken over and it is a bit of a feeling-out process. Could Haley be challenging DJ to meet the teams needs over his own? DJ does look soft for a LB. I think he has always survived (and excelled) on his deity’s given skills. Now it is time to make an effort to support that. Isn’t it his last year of his current contract, want more cash go out there and earn it. Probably wrong and he is just done in the NFL as a starter.

    - maybe if ‘check’ had made you guys run a few (hundred) more laps, or shoved ’stead of pushed that Superbowl ‘L’OSS would have been easier to take (he’s now 0-5 counting his last loss ARIZ – I sense a trend.)

s (trying) to do the same in KC Kurt… alas, whence push came to shove he’s doing the chicken dance – all ‘tapped’ out as in laid an 0-4 egg… GREAT!

Meanwhile, back at Peace Corps Arizona branch, no Davidians but too no doubt whatsoever Kurt’s mind Hailme’s ouster will be overcome in short order:

“I’m sure all of this is going to get worked out.”

I wouldn’t read too much into the DJ vs. Williams thing yet. We have no reason to believe the depth charts Haley puts out. He’s only used it as a motivational tool so far. Same goes with McGraw vs. Page. I expect both Page and DJ to get significant playing time in week 1 (if not start) and be the clear starters by week 2. Unless they fail to “buy in” or fail miserably in week 1.

That said, I think Williams is a better player than most give him credit for… when healthy. But that’s the kicker: he can suck when playing with injuries like he did most of last year. And apparently he has a nagging hamstring(?) right now, so who knows with him.

Dj is on the 3rd string team because he’s not consistent. Demmario since coming off injury reserve has been outplaying him. All KC fans has been waiting for DJ to consistently play with a chip on his shoulder maybe the guy is what he is. A guy that sometimes play like an all-pro other times play like a backup linebacker. Hopefully I’m wrong but after 5 seasons I mean you got to start to accept maybe this is the best he’s going to be.

I”m not saying he’s worst but obviously he’s getting outplayed by the guy. What you got to realize in the NFL everybody has talent its about being dicipline and that talent being displayed on Sundays. Alot of guys come into the league with talent but the ones that make it are the ones that give 100% in practice and it translate to the games. Obviously he’s not doing something right to be on the 3rd string team and until he does he’s not playing with the 1st or 2nd team. No different from how Bowe had to step his game up to earn his way back into the starting lineup.

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner said during a Phoenix radio interview that the team will have to cope with the loss of former offensive coordinator Todd Haley as Haley’s aggressive coaching style kept players alert. The Cardinals wrapped up a preseason in which they looked very lethargic. “I’m not going to put that all on Todd, but he was very much a vocal, in-your-face, challenging type coach that would really push guys,” Warner said. “Sometimes that would show itself in anger and frustration, guys yelling at each other on the sidelines, but the one thing I appreciated about Todd was, he pushed us to be great and he wasn’t worried about being our best friend. He just wanted us to respect him for making us better players. I appreciate that part of it.”

One thing that Haley is doing is getting back to basics with fundamentals and techniques. The last couple of the Chiefs have been sloppy in making tackles hence a lot of big plays. That’s one of the reasons Pollard was let go and for Page’s and Johnson’s demotions. Better coaching will result in more wins as the last staff did a horrible job in teaching for the HC on down.
