Practice Report 9/10 Update

From the Truman Sports Complex

QB Matt Cassel’s left knee must be holding up because he did more in the open portion of Thursday’s practice than he did in either the Monday or Wednesday sessions.

“It’s doing well,” Cassel said of his knee. “I’ve been working hard. I’ve been out there each day at practice. I feel like I’m making progress every day.”

But will he play Sunday against Baltimore?

“That’s up to the coach, ” Cassel said. “I think it’s a decision that will probably go right up until game time. As long as I’m able to walk and get out there, I’m ready to go. It’s their job (coaches/trainers) to decide.”

So what does the coach say?  Same thing as Wednesday, same thing as Tuesday, same thing as …

“This is going to be a full week evaluation,” said Haley. “This will go down to the wire. On game day we will probably still be trying to figure it out.”

In the quarterback drills, Cassel showed a little more energetic pass drop and plant than previously. In one of the drills, the QB drops three steps, stops, takes a shuffle step or two, and then drops two more steps. It’s a herky-jerky movement for the legs; Cassel did that and appeared to have no difficulties. When it came to throwing on the run, Cassel had done none of that in the first two practices this week. On Thursday, he did throw one pass on the move and delivered it with accuracy.

Cassel’s ball was arriving with some heat as he drilled several short throws.

Overall, he did not move with the same agility and quickness the other quarterbacks displayed, but it was an improvement over his earlier sessions.

Haley would not play the percentages game, as to what level of health Cassel would have to be to play, whether it was 75, 80, 90 percent.

“I don’t think one of those players is100 percent,so to talk in percentages is just playing mind games,” said Haley. “Our job as coaches is to try and figure who gives us the best chance to win on any given Sunday. That’s what we do through the week and hopefully on Sunday we get it right.”

Haley had the team in shoulder pads and shorts on Thursday morning with a full compliment of 53 roster players and eight practice squaders taking part.

During his  post-game press conference, Haley was asked specifically about the depth chart situations involving LB Derrick  Johnson and FS Jarrad Page. On Johnson he said: “Derrick is working hard from what I’ve seen. He’s having to do some show team, he’s having to do some special teams. We are asking him to do a lot and it appears to me that Derrick is working hard.”

Haley said of Page: “I think Jarrad is a guy that comes to work every day and gives it what he has, there’s no doubt about that. I think he has ability to be a big time safety.”

    - the condemned ate a hearty meal- if he’s playin he’ll be a layin – out cold – the Baltimore turf.

    Don’t cry…

    OK! That’s better!!!

    Lassie,

It will be alright. Vegas, you, say that the Chiefs will lose this week. It’s o.k., you have a gig for another week. The fans of the Chiefs not named after a dog will watch, support, and cheer them on, knowing that the team is pointed in the right direction.

I wonder if every “sane” individual that reads this blog would email Bob, if he’d actually do the right thing and put the village idiot down?

It couldn’t hurt, I’m sure he’d euthanize the mongrel in a humane manner.

  • September 10, 2009  - SG says:

“…knowing that the team is pointed in the right direction.”

Or if nothing else…pointed in a direction other than in “directly the wrong one.”

Lassie prefers to be called a “cur”, he thinks that the term “mongrel” is racist.

Stiv, Some people have suggested that Rin Tin Tin is actualy Bob himself.

Bob used to read the comments. He said so. He either quit or jsut does not care anymore.

  • September 10, 2009  - Anonymous says:

I would bet he is reading, or writing posts. Lassie brings controversy and comments to the site. Most of the other stuff you can find on numerous other sites. The history stuff, and shout outs on birthdays is cool. The rest Bob is usually behind on. So he has an idiot fire up the fans,

  • September 10, 2009  - BPinKC says:

I just emailed Bob (or whoever reads Bob’s email). Everyone else should follow suit.

“Certainly, Cassel’s ball was arriving with some heat as he drilled several short throws.”

Sounds good. At least he’s healing…if not 100% yet.

Yes, Bob used to read the comments. Even did that live chat one time…which was very cool. Maybe he’ll do it again one of these days. Bob? Bob?

I’d just like to have a log-in system here. That way, at least we know who is talking…and people could not post under other peoples names.

  • September 10, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

The login has been discused before and Bob hope you do that. Maybe Rin’s little followers will stop.

Anyway glad to hear Cassel is getting better and hope the O-Line performs better than they have or Cassel may just be on the injured list again as Baltimore will come after him.

  • September 10, 2009  - BPinKC says:

Bob uses Wordpress and it’s a simple change to require logins. It’s also a simple change to blacklist certain users and/or ip addresses. It needs to be done.

Regarding Cassel: I hope the Chiefs don’t send him to the wolves if he’s not 100%. The Ravens will eat him alive, especially with our O-line as it is now. I know he gives us the best chance to win, but I’d like to have him for the rest of the season too.

The Chiefs pulled off a big win in Baltimore a few years ago. Maybe, just maybe, they can do it again.

  • September 10, 2009  - el cid says:

The Ravens will eat any and all Chiefs’QBs if our OL cannot get their act together. BP is correct, if Cassel is not 100 %, bench him for game #1. There are 15 more coming and he can help then.

I expect to lose to the Raven by 6 points. I cannot see a TD based on the preseason. Sickening but the future is still positive.

I like the fact that we are playing a good defence in game one.

It can only help win or lose.

  • September 10, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Odd…how rancor for one be but fluff for another …

Where were all the bleeding hearts in 2008 whence Herm was being pilloried daily – and too Carl P?

An 0-4 start the new regime gets a free pass? Not on Rin’s watch, not in His life!

Since no one’s e’er/nor can refute Rin’s football truths as delivered daily nor deflect His arrows true & deadly rapier flight same, taketh they to ‘mob mentality’.

Calls for yet another paraphrased song, today’s selection:

“Try To Remember” (or in Chiefs parlance – ‘Try To Forget’)

    2, 3, 4…

“Try to remember the kind of September
When wins were oh so many splendored.
Try to remember the kind of September
When Chiefs were contenders and Hank the fellow.
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were young or still embryo.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
    Then swallow…swallow…hard.

Try to remember the wins in December
When no one wept except the conquered.
Try to remember the game in its splendor
When dreams were met always the victor.
Try to remember when Len wasn’t tender
When ‘D’ put asunder all the pretenders.
Try to remember, and if you remember,
    Then follow.

    Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
    Follow, follow, follow, follow.

    Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
    Follow, follow, follow, follow.

    Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
    Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Deep ‘09 ‘cember, will not want remember,
Although you know the ‘L’s have followed.
Deep in December, best not to remember,
Without a team post season dreams hollow.
Deep in December, try not to remember,
The false hopes of September that made us callow.
Deep in December, our team by then deader than
    Huntley…Brinkley…Murrow…

    Go Chiefs 2009 – really

    Lassie,

    Guess who I’m talking about.
“You play to win the game!” 15-33 as Chiefs Headcoach.
” Hello, you play to win the game.” 54-74 overall
Play to win the game, not so much.

I don’t smoke, but I voted against no smoking ordinance, too many laws. I think you are in need of guidance, but I would not support a ban of your posts. You mark them with funny faces, when I don’t want to read your crap, I bypass them.

  • September 10, 2009  - Pro Scout says:

Minnesota cut Bobby Wade for some strange reason. Maybe because they have a faster version of him in Percy Harvin. Wade would be a fantastic pickup for the Chiefs. He’s still just 28, is a reliable pass catcher, AND is a solid punt returner to boot! Hopefully Pioli puts in a waiver claim for this guy and cuts one of the LBs to make room.

  • September 10, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    Yeah – yeah yeah!

Cut ‘Q’ tip – sign Wade – STAT! Next week aft game #1 whence vested veterans entire contract’s be not guaranteed…

  • September 10, 2009  - Scott says:

I have to disagree. If Cassel can go…he needs to be in there. Guys play at less than 100% all the time. Which is not to say, I want to put him in there ready or not.

Yes, the Ravens have a great Defense. But so does Philly, the Giants, and Steelers…just to name a few we’ll face early on. Should we sit guys who aren’t 100% for those games, too?

If there’s no significant risk or re-injury…I say play Cassel. The doctors and trainers are well qualified to make that call, I’m sure. But, I just can’t see sitting the guy because we’re playing the “big bad” Ravens, and afraid he’ll get hurt.

  • September 10, 2009  - CK says:

Rin want’s to judge this team before they have even played a game yet.

Herm’s calling you Rin he want you to play with his balls again so you can confirm to all your friends that Herm Edwards is STILL A MAN.

Right….don’t ban RTT….just give us a log-in system with a capability of placing people on ignore.

  • September 10, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

    Scott,

Totally agree if something major was wrong he wouldn’t play. But given our back-ups lack of success and the state of our O-Line if Cassel isn’t ready to take a hit I would rather see the #2 in as well and have Cassel for most of the season as we know the Chiefs short of a miracle are not going to the playoffs and need to get something out of this season aside from musical QB’s like last year playing whoever wasn’t hurt. I think we had like 6 different QB’s on the roster.

  • September 10, 2009  - CK says:

I bet Haley put’s Cassel in the shotgun and pass the ball all game. No dropping back required. Should be easy on the knee and there’s no way are running game will do much against the Ravens anyway.

U know alot of u guys on this site claim 2 be real chief fans. A real chief fan would believe that our team will win no matter what! I hear alot of u guys say I will be happy if we go 8-8 this yr, well not me I expect for us 2 make the playoffs and compete every year for a Championships!

  • September 10, 2009  - Scott says:

    Chris,

I don’t want Cassel hurt, either. With him in, I feel we’ll have a chance to win. Not just the Ravens game…but every game. Unfortunately, I have very little confidence in ANY of our other QB’s to come in and actually be a leader, and win games.

  • September 10, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

U see like this guy claiming our running game will be nuetralized by the ravens defense…sheez! Atleast try 2 think positive.

Hopefully if Cassell isn’t healthy enough to move in the pocket, scramble, and throw off that leg Haley will just let him sit out this one and heal up more and just play him against the Raiders. It is good to hear he’s making progress. I just hope they don’t rush him back. This is just week 1 of the season no need to bring him back soon if its going to risk long term effects down the road. Its a long season so I just hope they try to be very catious on how soon to bring this guy back.

  • September 10, 2009  - David Henderson says:

The one point I would like to make is why is everyone so scared of Bmore? They are not hands down better than anyone else in the league! I think Haley will make the right decision of who will give the best chance to win the game. Cassel is obviously showing his teamates how to be tough and is showing a great amount of leadership by practicing hurt. I think we will have a tougher more disciplined team than last year with a few talent upgrades and only one loss of Tony G. GO CHIEFS GO CHIEFS P.S. Rin sucks, of course Herm has already admitted to that!

I hope Haley does this all season. Have Matt as questionable, give no info. The 3 QB’s are all so different, so even a few minutes a team has to waste, preparing for the possibility of the other 2 helps us.

    DOH!

  • September 11, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Alex, it’s good to follow a team and believe yes, but to be blinded enough about the state of the team that you actually believe they can block the Ravens Defense for the run or the pass is ludicrous. The chiefs will probably have to run slants all day to avoid being sacked a ton…
