Engram Impressed by Cassel

From the Truman Sports Complex

He admits that he hasn’t quite gotten up in time to work out yet with the Chiefs quarterbacks, who begin at 7:30 each morning.

“I’m still trying to get adjusted to the two-hour time change,” Engram said Thursday afternoon. “That would be 5:30 my time (Seattle).”

But on Friday, Engram plans to join Matt Cassel, Tyler Thigpen and Ingle Martin and anybody other arms that may be part of the early morning workout class.

“I think I’ll come in with that early group and catch some balls,” Engram said. “We’ll definitely get it cranked up next week.”

Engram is anxious to start working with the quarterbacks and especially Cassel, who impressed him a great deal last year when he stepped in for Tom Brady and became the Patriots 15-game starter.

“You don’t go through a whole season; that’s not a fluke,” Engram said. “Just watching Matt and the way he controlled the game when we played them. Watching him up close, he was very calm in the pocket. He knew where he wanted to go with the football, he delivered some strikes and he just commanded the team.”

Cassel led the Patriots to a 24-21 victory over Engram’s Seahawks in Week 14 of the regular season.

“I’m excited to see what his true potential is,” Engram said. “I think we’ve got a lot of pieces in place that will make him successful. Offensively, I think Todd (Haley) is going to be creative; he’s going to spread the ball around, and get everyone involved. That was a good formula for success when I was in Seattle.”

Engram and Cassel spent some time talking at the hotel where the out-of-town players are staying during the early part of this conditioning program.

“You’ve got to respect a guy like that who sat and bided his time and then when the opportunity presented itself, he seized it,” said Engram. “He’s grounded, he’s a level-headed guy and it’s obvious that he loves the game. Every time I see him, we are talking a little bit of offense, a little bit of football. We are just laying that groundwork. Those are the relationships you build off the field.”

Bobby Engram has seen enough QBs in his day, good and bad, experienced and green, to know what he’s talking about. I realize he isn’t going to say anything bad about Cassel, but this sounds like a ringing endorsement to me and I’m glad we have both of them aboard.

Now…will D-Bowe decide he’s going to run some routes and catch passes from Cassel? What about the other guys - any other signs of actual leadership?

    Sounds encouraging.

His comments are just from what he saw last year with the patriots, so they really don’t mean much. I mean, everyone was impressed with Cassel from afar, that’s nothing new. I’ll wait to hear ringing endorsements when he actually plays/practices with him.

Yes, but his comments speak volumes about why Pioli signed him- class and the right attitude toward work, in general, and football particularly.

So I take it Croyle might be 1 of the other people who isnt participating in voluntary workouts?

So other than TG, and Waters, who might be the other 2?

This is a team that even though being so young, lost a lot of close games

Engram, Beisel, Vrabel, Goff all bring work ethic, and experience…this will help finish games, and make the others better.

The more I hear about Cassel’s work ethic, the more I love the guy…Even if he is a bust, I’d still like him because he puts 110 percent into the game all the time, hes a football player, he loves, breathes and is football.

Let’s see… We got the QB we wanted and the guy the Bronco’s coveted and caused a huge rift that led to them trading their supposed franchise QB in the process. Hmm? Not bad and that deal is looking better and better. I’ll take our Pioli over their Pioli anyday. Let’s go Chiefs!

Glad to see Cutler didn’t go to Detroit either, so they still might draft a QB leaving Curry for the Chiefs. There is no possible way I can see Denver improving this year! The Chargers should be about the same, their meathead cheatin linebacker wont be 100% and The Faiders might have a chance to improve but theres a lot of offseason time still left for old “Allie OSB Davis” to screw the team up again. The future is lookin really bright for us Chiefs fans, cant wait till the draft! P.S. OSB stands for old senile bastard

Croyle is physically unable to work out he is still rehabbing his knee he won’t be ready until july. i know it’s killing him not to be able to throw. Brodie is really a hard nose competitor.

thanks for the info Massfan. I would love to see him become successful with the Chiefs.

That being said, he has serious injury concerns and has no touch on the ball (he’ll throw a 3rd out dumpoff to the rb at 80mph).
