From the Mouth of Todd 10/19

From the Truman Sports Complex

For the first time in his short career as an NFL head coach, Todd Haley was able to meet the media horde without a big fat zero attached to his record and name.

That first victory came on Sunday in Washington and although the Redskins might be really in disarray right now and the Chiefs were unable to punch a touchdown across the goal line, a win, is a win, is a win.

“After looking at the tape, I’m very encouraged by some of the things I saw,” said Haley. “Our defense probably put together our most complete performance. Offensively though we didn’t score enough points, we only had two penalties and no turnovers, again. I think on the road that’s critical (no turnovers) to your chances for success. Special teams for the most part were very good.”

Here are some more of the highlights from his 19-minute session with the media scum.

ON THE PLAY OF MATT CASSEL AND WHETHER HE’S TAKING TOO MANY HITS:

“He’s obviously a tough guy. I’m extremely proud of the effort and competitiveness that he puts into a game. I’m excited to be around players like that. We just need to get more guys to think and act like that. I stopped the tape multiple times today to point out Matt taking big time shots from 300-plus pound defenders in an effort to let the other guys know that they need to do their part. This guy is going to stand in and taking that kind of a beating. We need everybody kind of thinking and acting like that.”

ON WHETHER KOLBY SMITH WILL RETURN TO PRACTICE THIS WEEK FROM THE PUP LIST:

“This is when the window opens. We’ve had some side discussions about it, but we’ll make the decision later in the week. I know he’s chomping at the bit. He’s been working really hard and I’d sure like to get him there.”

ON THE PLAY OF WADE SMITH FILLING IN FOR BRANDEN ALBERT AT LEFT TACKLE:

“Wade did a pretty good job. He showed his value, as a guy you don’t hear a lot about who’s covering all the (offensive line) spots. He’s got some versatility and then all of a sudden he’s got to come in during that final drive last week and did a good enough job for us to have a chance to win. I thought he did a pretty good job and I was pretty impressed with the effort.”

HOW WILL THIS TEAM RESPOND TO THEIR FIRST VICTORY?

“It’s a big test for us. It’s the next step in the development of this team. That’s a problem for some teams, and not for others. I think it’s very important that we understand the task at hand; that we need to have another very good week of practice and build on this performance.”

HOW MUCH NERVOUSNESS IS AMONG THE PLAYERS AT THIS TIME BECAUSE OF TUESDAY’S NFL TRADE DEADLINE?

“I don’t know, you’d have to ask the players. It’s not something I think about.”

Will we see a Trade? There several names that come to mind but, I guess we will see if Paoli has anything up his sleeve.

Congrats Chiefs, and I know I may sound a little greedy but can you do it again please?

    Go Chiefs!!!

Apparently one Demarcus Tyler had cause to be nervous. Who’s our 2nd NT now?

Tank gone to the Panthers for an undisclosed pick. Guess the so called experts wrong again. Dorsey still here. Like i said

Another Herm pick bites the dust. Boy just proves Shanahan wasn’t the best Gm coach he left McDaniels a heck of alot more talent than Peterson and Herm left Haley.

on Haley’s answer about Cassel taking too many hits…WTF? What about him holding on to the ball way too long???? I admire his toughness and courage but not his lack of decision-making ability.

As far as the players worried about being traded…I can imagine them shaking in their boots about the thought of being traded from a 1-5 team to a possible contender….”shudder” “shudder”

  • October 19, 2009  - ED says:

Tank was traded for a 2010 5th round pick according to foxsports.com.

  • October 19, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Yea and they are trading for him to play, so that says something for the guy, might possibly say something for Herm if tank ends up playing well.

you have a fantastic training camp site but really…how much do you need to bag on haley? you are subtle with it, but any writer can see it.

  • October 19, 2009  - alex says:

any moron that thinks its cassel holding the ball too long, might want to realize and check tape on those plays…he DOESNT THROW TO AVOID A PICK

ill take the sack over the pick

    no turnovers AGAIN

arrowhead if tank somehow plays well what would it say about herm? that he hit on 3 of 21 picks? cmon

  • October 19, 2009  - ED says:

I know him playing with Panthers means nothing. They will be missing the playoffs just like us this yr. That is another team that like Redskins who probably be having a coaching change if the losing keeps up.

  • October 19, 2009  - mr awsome says:

all we got was a 5 for that guy he was a 3rd rounder right? i guess since herm drafted him you gotta knock off some points lol

  • October 19, 2009  - Wolfpack says:

any moron would know a QB should throw the ball away instead of taking a sack.

  • October 19, 2009  - Tim says:

Tyler doesn’t really fit the 3-4. He’s a 4-3 player & Carolina is a 4-3 team. I believe he’ll end up being productive…just not a “star” in the long run.

IF he checks out, remember the guy from Alabama – Cody as a potential Nose Tackle…

    Mr. Gretz-

Get over your obvious bitterness with the Chiefs GM and Head Coach already. They don’t owe you anything. Their task at hand is to turn this franchise around win some Super Bowls. Your subtle potshots are amateurish and you come across as a real prick. Come on, you can do better.

    Real Chiefs Fan? “W”

Mr. Gretz is the only worth while Chiefs news source on the web. If you don’t like his commentary, then just bugger off. We do not need your negativism here.

P.S. I wish I had word-of-the-day calender so I could sound articulate as well.

Per Alex’s comment above, I’ve noticed some unnecessary bagging on Haley as well in several of Bob’s posts. Seems a little petty.

  • October 20, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Well I dont think this win has changed the minds of many, we beat the worst team in the NFL right now. They have lost to 3 0-fer teams now, that makes them the worst team. The chiefs couldn’t score a TD, they wont win any other games not scoring touchdowns. By the way Cassell does hold the ball way to long, and Wade Smith didn’t look very good at LT, hopefully brandon gets back soon. There were a couple of plays I saw where he was burnt and ended in sacks, but in Wade’s defense Cassel should have thrown the ball away…

  • October 20, 2009  - B in SC says:

Redskins defense is pretty good so don’t penalize the KC offense too much for having trouble scoring. The Skins are 5th in total yards and 8th in scoring defense. After playing 6 NFL teams (losers or not) that is pretty good. Their offense is the problem (sound familiar?).

Agreed that Cassel holds the ball too long and I assume Haley is working with him on that. WR’s could sure help with that by getting open.

Don’t know if Wade Smith was okay or not, I really didn’t see any difference in the OL at all. Doesn’t seem to matter who is in or who is not. Didn’t notice any difference when Waters went out either. Bad is bad.

Denver’s Daniels make Haley look like a selection out of the handicapped ward.
