Happy Birthday To Us

A year ago bobgretz.com came on line. I wondered at the time like the old cliché about the tree falling in the forest, whether a website that nobody knew about really was on the Internet?

We’ve survived 365 days, had a helluva time along the way and we were found by more readers than we thought possible, despite the fact that our marketing budget was only big enough to buy a cheeseburger.

Thank you for finding us, thanks for your continued readership at page view levels that have been stunning and we hope to keep you coming back for more and more. We are prepared for another year of covering the Chiefs, along with college and pro football and we hope to advance our level of coverage.

We need a little something more from you as well. Right now this is a great hobby, but at some point in year No. 2 it must become a viable business. We have pondered going to a subscription service and have not completely dismissed that idea although it’s not something anyone involved wants.

Soon we are going to step up our attempts to get advertising. If you have a business or if you are good friends or family to someone that has a business, tell them about the site and tell them they need to advertise. We need some leads and some help getting doors cracked open.

It’s easy to get us at and we can provide more details. You can also use that address for any requests or comments you might have on year No. 1 and what you would like to see for year No. 2.

Our coverage from training camp will begin later this week and thus our postings will increase dramatically every day, so we are going to give you a lot of reasons to check in with us multiple times a day. We will be at the induction ceremonies at the Pro Football Hall of Fame when Derrick Thomas is honored and when they open the Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery. And, we will be at all the Chiefs pre-season games to provide in-depth coverage of the start of the Pioli/Haley Era.

Again, thanks for your support.

Congrats on your 1 year birthday. Not a day goes by without dropping by this site and I can’t wait until camp updates start.
Best wishes and keep up the extremely good work.

Bob, congratulations on putting together the best Chiefs site on the net by far. I can’t provide you any advertising leads because of not living in the KC area but that’s only the local advertising market. I wish I knew someone at Nike, Directv or Miller Beer, or anyone at the national or regional ad level, but alas, I do not.

If you are to go to the subscriber service, I’ll be among the first in line to sign up. Once the revenue streams have been improved, let me hold my hand up for a vote on getting those excellent podcasts back on the site and thanks again for an outstanding web site.

  • July 26, 2009  - Tenand6 says:

Bob, in your first year you established the best Chiefs site. Congratulations. If you go subscription, I’m in.

  • July 26, 2009  - Hemi7382 says:

Congrats, Bob. I agree with everyone else here. This is the best Chiefs site to go to for news and other tit-bits of info. There’s even some actual intellectual discussion among peers.

Hey Bob, have you ever thought to ask fellow writer Peter King of SI for a little help? He mentioned your website in his Monday Morning QB column a few months back.

  • July 26, 2009  - Ernest says:

Good job and keep it up. A must go to site EVERYADY.
    STAY STRONG CHIEFS

  • July 26, 2009  - dkemtptom says:

    Bob,

Happy Birthday, indeed! I visit your site daily - usually the very first one I go to after loging in… thank you for all that your do for us Chiefs fans, it is very much appreciated! Have you considered putting up a link / option for fans of the site to donate to the cause?

    Keep up the great work!

  • July 26, 2009  - steve says:

Happy Birthday Bob. This is the best Chiefs info site around, I check it several times a day, couldn’t do without it. Best of luck with continued sucess.

  • July 26, 2009  - findthedr says:

Thanks for a great site Mr. Gretz.

I hope you are able to avoid going to a subscription service, but it will be very hard to get ad revenue in this economy.

  • July 26, 2009  - Johnfromfairfax says:

    Bob,

I echo the sentiments of others in congratulating you for the best Chiefs site on the web and hope to enjoy reading your posts and those of other fans for a long time. if a subscription is required I would be in but hope it’s not necessary. Keep up the great work and bring on training camp.

  • July 26, 2009  - dusty says:

Good site, very good site, but if subscription, then you will lose me and, likely, many other readers, leaving only die hards to get the scoop of the day. Hope you find financial support from another source - good luck.

  • July 26, 2009  - anonymous says:

I’m generally apposed to the whole idea of paying for news, I would hope it wouldn’t come to that. Having said that, I want to see this site survive and flourish. I would think your name recognition alone would give you a big advantage over other blogs dedicated to the Chiefs and football, in general. I would also think that after thirty some odd years being associated with the Chiefs, you would have a vast network of People/businesses that could benefit by advertising here. Maybe some of the former players that have businesses, Like Will Shields, Deron Cherry etc etc. Or, you may have to do what no one enjoys doing, cold calling on local business.

IMO, the best thing we can do as loyal readers is to (as has been discussed here before, and I have always done) click on the adds! If you normally visit the site three time a day, try to make it six times a day. Post links to BobGretz.com on other blogs you visit. If you call a local radio station and make it on air, mention this site.

Bob, have you contacted that idiot Williamson that does the AFC west blog on ESPN, about linking to your site, that fn’ guy needs all the help he can get! Florio at PFT/NBC would be another good one, if you could get him to link to some of your post.

I really enjoy this site, but if you go subscription, I will not be able to afford it, money is tight

  • July 26, 2009  - NJChiefsFan says:

    Many happy returns!!

  • July 26, 2009  - ED says:

Bob I truly appreciate your insite on the Chiefs. Keep up the good work. I’m truly hoping for an exciting year of football this season Go Chiefs.

  • July 26, 2009  - alex k says:

    GreatJob Bob,

Been here since day one reading your updates, and can safely say you provide more inside info than any other site.

We all appreciate it..Love that you continue to do it, needed in a year where news is on lockdown.

  • July 26, 2009  - alex k says:

I hope it doesnt go to a pay subscription.

you would be fine managing the site if they paid you what they pay williamson to say the chiefs need to sign _______. And that corner is the biggest need. Chris Mccalister, Koren robinson would both be chiefs…the list would continue if i actually read williamsons’ BS.

  • July 26, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

    First things first, Bob G…

Rin has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the blog & looks forward to being even more rapier witted in the future- you’re welcome, everyone.

Secondly, as to pay service - you can count Rin in! Part n’ parcel thereof He would also suggest having safeguards in place as means to alleviate the aspect some bloggers who ‘imitate’ others by signing in under the name someone else/several.

Lastly, great Chiefs news as always and the best part is no censorship - not allowing the whiney faction any realization of mob rule, their small-minded hopes for shout down via plea “Bob remove blogger ____________ because I don’t like them & the way they blog and/or their style”, etc.

So, here’s the fervent hope that as the Swallows Capistrano, you Bob G willst return as shall Rin Tin Tin e’ermore!

    daddy-o, ’search’ & ‘check’ affirming…

  • July 26, 2009  - azchieffn says:

Great site Bob. I read it every day. You give us KC fans more news than any site I’ve found. And I’ve found them all! Chiefs official site should take notice. It is lacking, to say the least. If I have to pay, I will. I have to pay for NFL ticket just to see my team and things are tight. Thanks again for your great site, and Happy 1st B-day. Many more to come.

  • July 26, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

daddy-o would also add that any/all of the current ‘other’ free sources for Chiefs news I am aware of (KC Star for example) or paid ones (like Warpaint Illustrated for example) are pathetic.

I’ve had the misfortune to read both - gratis the first case & hoodwinked in the second - and a fan might as well just choose contemplation the fuzz navel than expect anything insightful from either those entities.

Rin always tells it like it is…

  • July 26, 2009  - arnie says:

Congrats on one year of great coverage. Whenever the rumor mill gets started around the office I always say “Just a minute, let me go to BobGretz.com to get the real story”. The behind the scenes insight and straightforward factual reporting is kind of refreshing in the world of normally hyped media coverage.

Keep up the good work. If you have to go to subscription, I will be there to support you.

  • July 26, 2009  - Josh says:

Relax! I’ll donate enough money to fund this site, I talked it over with Clark, he was not supportive until I threatened to withdraw my charitable donations to his soccer teams. He came around.

  • July 26, 2009  - Chris says:

    Congrats Bob!

Oddly enough, today is the third birthday of Arrowhead Pride. I didn’t even realize the sites had the same birthdays.

I think you’ll lose quite a few readers if you go subscription. Your content is good enough to attract a lot of of visitors. I think you need a little SEO work, 2-3 posts a day minimum and you can probably hit some good advertising traffic levels.

Holler at me if you need any help. Again, congratulations! This is a top notch blog.

  • July 26, 2009  - Enrique says:

Happy Birthday bobgretz.com!!! Here’s hoping for an endless growth of your already long list of faithful Chiefs supporters !!!

  • July 26, 2009  - True Red & Gold says:

Happy B-Day to your site Bob. If this was your brain child Congrats on your year of success. I look forward to updates such as usernames and passwords to log on. Also for all of our sakes best of luck in the upcoming year.

    LMAO!

    Atta boy Juniorrrrrrrrrr!

“It’s unclear why the Chiefs have opted not to lock the players up for an extra year. Since the contracts aren’t guaranteed, the Chiefs could cut a player if, by year four, he hasn’t developed into a long-term contributor.”

“The only benefit to the team for a shorter deal is that it entails a smaller signing bonus. But not by much. In signing Brown (a third-rounder) to a three-year deal, the Chiefs saved about $45,000 in signing bonus money, given the signing bonuses paid to the player taken just in front of him and just behind him, both of whom signed four-year contracts.”

\__/ Alms!… Alms for the poor!

    LMAO!

Happy Birthday, BobGretz.com! This is the only Chiefs site I visit daily; I’ll continue to visit come what may subscription-wise.

I can’t wait for the training camp coverage!

  • July 26, 2009  - Dan says:

I agree with everyone else. Way to go! Your stats must be off the charts!

  • July 26, 2009  - Randy says:

Bob, it’s truly a pleasure to visit your site each day. I probably check in at least twice a day. I personally give you my word that I will click on an ad EVERY DAY to help support this site. Everyone elso who would like to keep this site free should do so as well. If Bob can show some strong numbers on ad’s being clicked, advertising will literally sell itself.

    CLICK THOSE ADS!!!

  • July 26, 2009  - Tracy says:

Great work the past year and congratulations on reaching a milestone. I wasn’t aware of this great website until I read Peter King’s comments about it when he was in KC for the 2009 draft. Since then I have dropped by everyday.
Links to other local sports web sites might be a way to build traffic and supposedly some kind of Google click count/advertising revenue but somebody much better versed in web traffic than this writer would the one to talk to.
On a local basis, I would make overtures to Soren Petro to appear on his show on a regular basis as a commentator during the football season. While there may be some politics involved, it would certainly be worth an effort. Personally I feel he is the best informed guy on the air when it comes to sports. Yeah, he can be caustic and argumentative but his opinions are based on prolific knowledge, he calls a spade a spade and he has rapier wit and a sense of humor to match.
Frankly, it seems that both your website and his show would have a mutually beneficial experience.
Best wishes for the upcoming season and year.

  • July 26, 2009  - Nick says:

Thanks Bob for a wonderful year! This is one of the only sites that I visit absolutely every day. The most informative, in-depth, and intimate Kansas City Chiefs website on the web. I wish you the best of luck in the years to come! Be it ads, donations or subscription I will support this site. Keep up the good work Bob!!!

  • July 26, 2009  - aPauled says:

Awesome site Bob. Congrats on the first year. I would jump on the subscription service. A great investment. The subscription would also remove some of the anonymity that festers on the site at times. An all around good move.

  • July 26, 2009  - colby says:

    Happy Birthday to bobgretz.com!

I’d be willing to pay a reasonable fee to have a username that couldn’t be used by anyone else. No need to go crazy, but I think 5-10 dollars for a year’s worth is a fair price to pay, and I’d be willing to do my part to help the site stick around for a while.

Looking forward to your training camp updates as I’m sure they will be the best on the web!

  • July 26, 2009  - Don W says:

Happy Birthday. Like others have said, this is the only site I visit everyday. You’ve done a great job at providing information and insight everyday. You’ve helped us survive the drought of football information that we suffer through every year prior to the beginning of training camp.

Looking forward to the training camp reports and the end of the speculation. Time to see just what we have for a team for 2009!

  • July 27, 2009  - HatfieldMcCoy says:

    Bob,

Congrats on the first year. First rate reporting and analysis. I’m so hooked. If you go subscription please try to keep the monthly less than the price of a Boulevard Wheat at the stadium. If so put me on the list.

  • July 27, 2009  - Harold C. says:

A year already? Wow…..time flies. Thanks again for the great site Bob. It is the first Chiefs site I visit and sometimes it is the only Chiefs site I visit. The site would be worth paying a little something for but I hope it doesn’t come to that as money is tight for me as well. I’m looking forward to another great year….and GO CHIEFS!

  • July 27, 2009  - jimbo says:

Happy Birthday BobGretz.com The most informative, relevent & trustworthy Chiefs website out there.
Bob, You are hands down the Head Writer of Chiefs Nation. Many Thanks.
Whether or not a subscription is required, count me in. I also enjoy the numerous savvy postings of your devout readers & fans.

    Congrats Bob,

  • July 27, 2009  - BigJimInWisconsin says:

Congratulations and Happy 1st BobGretz.com! What a year for such a great website.

This is my website of choice for all Chiefs news. Like many others, I have been here since Day 1. Thank you, Bob, for all the hard work. I am unemployed right now, but I would pay a nominal fee for keeping this website going. Nowhere else can I get the in-depth statistics, analysis, insight, and facts on my favorite team like I get here. How about trying a “Donation” option first? There are some of us who would contribute.

Thanks again to the Great Chiefs Communicator and Happy Birthday to his site!

    Big Jim in Wisconsin

This site is a voice of reason in coverage of things related to the Kansas City Chiefs.

This is the single best place to keep up with “who?, what?, when?, where?, why? and how? regarding the Chiefs.

I also appreciate the INFORMED comment from you, Bob.

    Keep up the great work.

  • July 27, 2009  - alex k says:

I agree, 5-10, is worth Bob’s inside info…but if he goes warpaint style on the price….

Ill agree with Rin on the idea that the other sites are terrible, Bob really has all the info you need(I do like AP though)

  • July 27, 2009  - Mark says:

Happy B-day Bob and good luck with whatever course you take. Whether you go pay or not, having a sign in system to avoid duplicate posters is a must.

  • July 28, 2009  - MarkInTexas says:

Congrats Bob. First rate content and required reading for any Chiefs fan. Good idea to brainstorm with your readers regarding financial viability. Hopefully doesn’t come to subscription, but you wouldn’t lose my readership.
