No Deal With Cassel
From the Truman Sports Complex
Chiefs GM Scott Pioli said Saturday afternoon after the team made its selection in the first round that there is no new contract or contract extension done with QB Matt Cassel.
“I heard about that, somebody mentioned that,” said Pioli. “News to me.”
The NFL Network reported that the Chiefs and Cassel had agreed to a six-year extension for $36 million around 1:15 p.m. SI.com’s Peter King, who is in Kansas City for the draft, talked with two different people in the league who said there was no new contract situation with Cassel.
Cassel is currently playing under the franchise player tender offer he signed with New England that will bring him $14.65 million.
No surprise to me. You just can’t trust the media!
Good pick on #3 by the way!
Also, it wouldn’t make sense to sign the guy to 6 years yet would it?
This is about 2 hours to late, I commented a long time ago that Cassel said he had signed no new deal.
I think his 14+ million is a nice year’s salary.
I don’t hear him complaining…
Matt Cassel and Mark Sanchez share the same agent: David Dunn. Given the timing of the Cassel news–an hour or so before the draft–and with the benefit of hindsight, given the fact Sanchez was selected by the Jets, I’m wondering if someone (in Dunn’s office?) mixed up the contract info. I will be very interested to see Sanchez’s ultimate contract numbers. Very possible Sanchez was a done deal before the Jets (Browns) were on the clock and someone leaked the wrong name.
That does make some sense. Damn! Pioli sure could have pissed all kinds of in there post-toasties, had he drafted Sanchez.
I would rather have a 1yr wonder in the NFL than a 1yr wonder in college.
I’m glad Sanchez isnt a chief. He is going to get raped by Jets fans and the swirling winds of the meadowlands.
Pioli might just be being cute, as the contract hasn’t been signed or filed yet, but maybe agreed upon and leaked by someone. If it’s a source from the Chiefs, I suspect Pioli has already fired someone.
