Nobody Saw This One Coming!

From Arrowhead Stadium

If at 12:02 p.m. Sunday you thought the Chiefs could beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, then head immediately to Las Vegas because you are on a roll.

By 12:03 p.m., everybody knew that a Chiefs victory was suddenly possible, after Jamaal Charles shocked the world by taking the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. It was a quick strike that said a lot. It shouted that the Chiefs were not going to roll up and die in facing the defending Super Bowl champions.

It would be three hours-plus before the Chiefs were able to secure the 27-24 victory on Ryan Succop’s 22-yard field goal in overtime.

The victory ended a 10-game home losing streak, if Arrowhead Stadium could be called a home game on Sunday. The stands were filled with fans wearing black and gold and twirling those Terrible Towels. The Chiefs say they sold 70,261 tickets to this game, but not that many were in the stands and a large number of them were cheering for the visitors.

Although some Chiefs admitted the lack of support bothered them, they didn’t play like it, especially in the fourth quarter when they had a drive to tie the game. They came back in the overtime for a drive to set up the winning field goal.

Oh, there was so much to write about. Here it is:

time check 0641 on Monday and this is the third comment. Where are all of the die hard fans giving praise to thier TEAM? WOW!! what a game the TEAM really came together!! All three phases yesterday we were the Giant killer, yesterday was our “Superbowl”. Yesterday we put the right 53 on the field for the second week in a row. Interesting how the back to back wins come after we cut off the cancer.

It will always be about the TEAM and the right 53!

In Coach Haley I trust! Now you should too!!

Once again a good win. DJ creditted with 7 tackles but looked poor a lot of the time, maybe this win will help snap him out of whatever is wrong with him. Studebaker would be Def Player of the Week if he could of made the end zone. McGraw was in the right place most of the game. The best the Defense has looked all year. I guess we should expect TDs out of the spec. teams all the time now, what is going on there is amazing.

When D Bowe returns the offense may have a easier time of it, hope so.

Haley has done what he said he could do “Win two games with 22 player off the street”. In fact he done something Herm couldn’t do, Win three games with 22 players off the street. It wasn’t real pretty but you can see alot of bright spots each and every game, another fact is that they are showing up a little with each and every game. If we can just get over or limit the few errors that seem to occur every game, this team looks as if it can be special each and every week.

    Congrats Chiefs!!!

This is what I’ve been saying all along….we have the talent 2 compete and win with any team. For all of u who say we stink and have no talent well we just beat the reigning SB champs! Haley coached the team pretty good(minus the 2nd qtr….why not use your TO?). Studebaker is a stud and should take Vrabels’ position….he was stout against the run and dropped back in coverage fairly well. Cassel was ok…he almost cost us the game with the holding the ball 2 long crap….Here is a hint for u Cassel go through your progressions and if no1 is open throw it away! Stop tring 2 wait for your WRs 2 break off thier routes. Any1 noticed since Goff has been gone there hasnt been more breakdowns with the o-line? Watching this game u can see where we need help at…Middle LB(some1 2 attack the hole not wait) Wr(Chambers is a number 1 not Bowe) C,RG and young SS(could be Morgan if he gets a chance like Studebaker did). Overall good game beating a great team and better organization!

Alex – Charles TD run notwithstanding, we need a KR and PR also. Appreciate Studebaker but Vrabel has done it for years and still has some gas in the tank. Will change that if Studebaker continues for the next few games.

el cid…Vrabel has maybe a 1/4 of a tank left and thats mainly his knowledge of the game. His physical abilities are no longer present for the position he plays.

Plenty of bright spots in this one. Charles is explosive and made big plays in the clutch. The thing that surprises me the most about him is how hard he runs. He is more physical than I thought he’d be.

Studebaker of course was a huge bright spot. Two picks, half a sack, good against the run for the most part. If he continues to work hard, he should stay in the starting lineup the rest of the year. Maybe when he’s healthy, Vrabel could move inside where we need an upgrade over Mays, who simply can’t cover on passing downs.

McGraw was a tackling stud and stopped Mendenhall from doing serious damage when he broke through the front seven.

    Succop is clutch. Big time.

Cassel is tough as nails. The first three quarters were rough, but he made big throws when it counted.

Chambers is surpassing all expectations. When we signed him I said that I hoped we were getting another Eddie Kennison, an AFC West castoff who needed a change of scenery. I think we may have just that.

Leonard Pope may be a lumberer, but his size makes him a weapon down field. It was good to see him catch that long TD.

I can’t believe we won this one. Unlike last week against the Raiders, who handed us the win, the Chiefs played well as a team and dropped on of the best teams in football. Hopefully this will be a turning point for our franchise!

In this piece you mentioned the dislike the Chiefs players had from the lack of support in the stands. I feel the same way, but at the same time I understand the disgrace that has accompanied Arrowhead Stadium the past two years. The mystique of the stadium lingered away over the past two years, but every once in awhile you are reminded of how things used to be. There was time when you couldnt hear yourself speak when the Chiefs were on defense. Now you can hear the person in front of you speak and even the section full of the oppossing team’s fans as well. I dont feel like I am in KC when I am watching a game, it feels more like neutral ground away from our town. Most of it can be blamed on the last several years of Carl Petersons’ reign, or the uninvolvment of Clark over the past two years, or the lack of commitment to bring in big time players that can perform, or the lack to keep those kind of players here (Jared ALlen). But it comes down to winning games at the end of the day, something the Chiefs havent been able to do for a long time. Lets hope this is the start of the revival of an Arrowhead I used to know and love.
