Chiefs Start Slicing

The Chiefs began the process of getting down to the NFL roster limit of 53 players by releasing eight players Friday. Leading the group was veteran OT Damion McIntosh, who has been a two-year starter. Also released were G Tavares Washington, OT Herb Taylor, C Eric Ghiaciuc, CB. Travis Daniels, CB Londen Fryar, FB Jed Collins and LB Corey Smith. More details tomorrow morning on bobgretz.com Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile

They’ve got to be going after an RT. Surely Richardson isn’t the man.

  • September 4, 2009  - Behind Enemy Lines says:

My thoughts exactly. Those are also the thoughts of the 3 or 4 QB’s we’ll be keeping.

  • September 4, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

We only have 3 tackles on the roster left, so it seems certain we’ll be picking up someone elses trash.

    In general, i’d expect:
    4 tackles
    3 G
    1 C
    1 C/G swingman

  • September 4, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Ghiaciuc, Daniels, Fryar, Collins, Smith…5 of the 8 are & hand-pickeds: “any 22’s will do”s… the Patriot Way again proves to have come a cropper. They join Robertson, Jones, Curtis, Redd & Purdham for an even 10 misses – errors judgment by ’search’ & ‘check’. Many more still yet to come…

Will be interesting to see how far below 53 the Chiefs go to pick up other teams’ players.

  • September 4, 2009  - Anon says:

    Mr. Tin:

Jed Collins was signed 1/8/09 per nfl.com.
The Scott Pioli hiring was announced 1/13/09 per Wikipedia.

    Please adjust your count accordingly.

It should not hurt your premise.

  • September 4, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

    Anon,

Rin Tin Tin sneers at your puny facts!

  • September 4, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

You do realize Rin’s only purpose is to annoy you right? He doesn’t say the rediculously skewed and downright incorrect things b/c he believes them. He just gets off on making you respond to his nonsense.

I suggest you don’t even read his nonsense and keep the real discussions going. For example, can we at all get by with the Tackles we have? If we try, does Colin Brown get moved back to Tackle? Should we be checking in with the likes of Levi Jones? Who might get cut from other teams that can help us?

  • September 4, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

When Pioli was ‘announced’ is not whence in fact officially became member KC team. If you had the means as does Rin would know was in fact “on board” even afore an ‘official’ announcement was made for public consumption. This player in question was Patriot Way choice ’search’ first mistake what will be many more as Rin has stated; don’t say He didn’t tell you so.

As Bo knew, so too Rin too; inside info as twere. Things that you being but Anon do not know, could not know – should not know. Believe as you wish – can pay Rin now as e’ery to date hath or, pay Him later as e’ery shall continue to. Could tell you more, but t’wouldst spoil the surprises yet to be told by yours truly…soon enough.

I wouldn’t expect to see any clearly superior tackles cut from other teams. The Chiefs FO may be tracking some who they feel are better than what we have.

Besides Levi Jones there Jon Runyan, who’s recovering from microfracture surgery in his knee. I’m not sure of his health status, but he may have a season or two left in him.

  • September 4, 2009  - JP says:

Even if they pick up a sixth grader with asthma it will be better than McIntosh.

Chiefs nation rejoice! Damion’s reign of terror is finally over. All hail Pioli!

  • September 4, 2009  - findthedr says:

Although Pope is big (6′8” 260lbs) he is a horrible run blocker (similar to the chiefs TE)and lacks speed as a reciever.

He is essentially a slower version of Brad Cottam.
    no thanks.

  • September 4, 2009  - Dan says:

There you go McIntosh! You played around and acted like a preschooler! YOUR FIRED!!

  • September 4, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

I think there’s a good possibility we’ll see a big trade by the Chiefs this weekend. There have already been rumors about the Chiefs shopping Morgan and Pollard. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were shopping Derrick Johnson as well.

  • September 4, 2009  - MenInRed says:

The best part of Rin ran down his daddy’s leg, or maybe he was a spit baby.

    Go Chiefs!

  • September 4, 2009  - ED says:

I don’t think will land a superior right tackle, but we can find a solid one. We just need someone that can come in and be solid. NOt great but solid. Out of all the players going to be release there’s bound to be at least a couple of solid right tackles and right guards out there we can get our hands on. As for McIntosh no surprise. He’s been awful ever since his arrival here and he whinned about the conditioning something a guy of his size and age should have cared more about at this point in his career. NO surprise

  • September 4, 2009  - cid says:

More and more of Herm’s hand-picked players getting the axe! Herb Taylor joins a fast growing number of garbage players that should never have been drafted in the first place. Sad thing is, no one else is picking these guys up and putting them on their regular season roster.

Franklin, Robinson, Merritt, Johnston, Maxey, Stallings, Webb, Medlock, Taylor, Allan. I’m sure more will come tomorrow. Turk McBride? Barry Richardson? Tank Tyler? One of Pollard/Page/Morgan?

Pioli had a damn near impossible task this year: clean up the mess made by the two worst talent evaluators in the NFL. Carl and Herm. Not to mention the fact that Haley had the arduous task of knocking out the fat (Foreman style) that this team was carrying around; as well as getting rid of the lazy mentality that Herm instilled.

All things considered, Pioli and Haley get an A from me thus far.

  • September 4, 2009  - findthedr says:

Chiefs would have been fine at RT if they had just brought in the drunk Alex Boone as a RFA. Dude had 4yrs starting experience at LT for OSU, and would have been a starter for us at RT.

Not suprised that the chiefs are shopping Pollard. They will likely offer to trade at any position they have depth (CB, saftey, LB, possibly even RB).

  • September 4, 2009  - ED says:

Cid I agreed with you right up until you lumped Turk in that group of being let go. He’s had a good camp and preseason seeing he made a position change. I actually remember Pioli interview speaking highly of him and Hali about the transition to outside linebacker. AS for Page, Pollard, or Morgan being traded. I seriously doubt it unless we’re getting a good right tackle in return. All guys have played well throughout camp and in preseason games.

As for Richardson. Since he’s a young guy he might get another year with the team to improve before he’s let go if he doesn’t improve. Tank will remain because he’s played ok and we need the depth at that position. Bobby Engram might be in trouble though. He hasn’t shown much in the preseason and Lelie is coming on fast emerging as the #3 guy behind Mark Bradley.

You know that old cliche “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance…baffle them with bullsh*t”?

They were taking about Rin. He’s all mouth…and no substance. We know it…and he knows it. The joke is on YOU if you take ANYTHING he says seriously.

Why does Bob put up with a Troll like that on his website? Excellent question…I have no idea whatsoever.

    Bob?

    JP,

I’ll trade you that 6th grader, DMac and a curmudgeonly and skeptical poodle clairvoyant for a 3rd grader with pneumonia and a limp.

  • September 4, 2009  - Lucas says:

Ed I have to disagree with you on the Engram comment. Engram is a slot reciever. Lelie can start at number 3 and Engram can still play situational football. Hes a little bit of a different kind of reciever. He won’t make big plays down the field but throw him in the slot on 3rd and 7 situations and throw him a quick out. He experienced and sure handed and has been working with the offense longer than Lelie. Also I would imagine he brings some experience and fostering to a young receiving core.

Another thing, Darling is gone, anyway you look at it, the Chiefs need healthy receivers. I say they start Bowe, Bradley, Lelie with Engram hopping in for 4 or 5 plays a game. I like Lawrences speed but he needs to make his impact as a special teams guy and since hes the only one to do anything return wise last week I say he makes the team.

There have been several people recently that suggested that very same thing.

I guess my question would be…why would Bob want to run people off from his own site? There are a number of good, intelligent posters who no longer come here…simply because of the BS.

    Bob?

And as we survey the current 67 man Chief roster, find that STILL Herm Be The Man!

More than 52% of the team remains Herm’s Chiefs, including the new STARTING RT Barry Richardson – this despite business as usual any new regime’s tack hen they axe as many the formers as can.

With 14 cuts to go (dependent on any new players added waiver/trade), truth be that no matter how & cut it/them will be Herm Edwards Chiefs in 2009! Of the remaining 14, expect more than half of those too be yet more failures from the poor talent acquisition knack be ’search’ & ‘check’ – hand-picked theirs falling like flies.

    heh heh heh!!!

    Told all ya alls so!!!

“More than 52% of the team remains Herm’s Chiefs”

Dumbass! Of course they have to keep some players. They can’t cut the entire team and start from scratch with just one draft!

Herm sucked balls! Get over it! If he was any good he would be coaching a team. Herm will never coach again, and there is a reason for that!

Herm’s record the last two years: W6 L26

  • September 4, 2009  - Anonymous says:

wow OF COURSE it’s still the starters from last year – did you think they would replace the ENTIRE team in one offseason? What a moron – years worth of drafts for the chiefs organization and you think they’ll just throw it away. Show me ONCE that has ever happened with a new head coach and maybe, MAYBE you’ll START to have a leg to stand on….

Damion McIntosh was the epitome of a Carl/Herm player. An over the hill bum signed to a ridiculous 6 year contract at big money, when players like him are availale on the NFL scrap heap for nothing, and can be looked at and evaluated and then be camp cuts, like Ghiaciuk was. That’s why Pioli is who he is, a multi time executive of the year, and Carl and Herm are where they are, on the outside looking in.
Great job by Pioli and Haley, not being tied to a player just beause they brought them in, like the prior clowns.

  • September 5, 2009  - cid says:

Pioli will snap up 3-5 players this week and probably net us another draft pick or two by trading away Herm’s crap players. He’ll show us yet again why he is the best there is in the league and the moves he makes this week will help us turn the corner and get better.

JP, LMBO! that is funny and almost true……I don’t know how I feel about Hayley yet, but one thing he did do that Herm didn’t was identify an obvious unnacceptable talent level and eliminate the problem. The key is whether he will be able to find a better solution. Maybe if sixth grade asthmatics are given legal rights to play in the NFL we will be in business

  • September 6, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

“Pioli will snap up 3-5 players this week”

    - uh huh… what’s the count so far – how many Snapperheads picked up by our Big Snapperhead?

“net us another draft pick or two by trading away Herm’s crap players.”

    - uh huh… how many so far, I’ve lost count?

“He’ll show us yet again why he is the best there is in the league”

    - by way doing the obvious nee right thing – retaining 60+% of Herm’s players… genius, agreed!

“and the moves he makes this week will help us turn the corner”

    - and find he’s not on a through road – dead end, no exit…

    “and get better.”

    - by way resigning along with after we’ve first gotten worse – making way a new Head Coach and GM come the end of 2010 if not sooner…
