Desperately Seeking Victory … Thursday Cup O’Chiefs

Nothing is forgotten quicker than the final pre-season game every year.

This year that’s true for 31 of the 32 teams in the NFL.

The exception is the Kansas City Chiefs. Right now, the Chiefs must approach any opportunity on the field as an important afternoon or evening. In the big picture of things, the outcome of Thursday night’s Chiefs-Rams game at the Ed Dome in St. Louis doesn’t amount to anything of tangible value. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

But in the little picture, this franchise needs to taste victory because the Chiefs have become the NFL’s biggest loser over the last three years. It’s a painful football reality show where nobody is celebrating in the end.

It all began on a January day in 2007 when the Chiefs fell to the Indianapolis Colts 23-8 in a post-season game at the old RCA Dome.

That’s 0-1.

In the 2007 pre-season, the Chiefs were 0-4.

That’s 0-5.

The ‘07 regular season started 4-3, but then the Chiefs lost nine straight to end the season 4-12.

That’s 4-17.

The 2008 pre-season was a 2-2 affair.

That’s 6-19.

The ‘08 regular season was 2-14.

That’s 8-33.

And now the 2009 pre-season record is 0-3.

That’s a record of 8-36, or a winning percentage of .182. Over the 2007-08-09 seasons, no team has won fewer games, or lost more games than the Chiefs. Not the Lions who went 0-16 last year in the regular season. Not their opponent tonight in the Rams, who are 5-27 in the last two regular seasons, but so far 6-5 in the pre-season.

Winning was once a habit at Arrowhead Stadium; the franchise won 105 regular and post-season games in the ’90s. Right now, this franchise is 180 degrees away from that time.

“It’s not fun, it’s not nice,’ said Todd Haley, and he’s only 0-3. “We’re going to do everything here at the Kansas City Chiefs that we can to win championships. That’s the ultimate goal and right now we’re trying to lay the foundation for where we want to go to.”

Right now, championships are a pipe dream. The Chiefs needs to simply win. They need to establish a different habit. Last year they were 1-8 in games where they had a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter.

That habit has continued this year. They’ve had a chance to beat Houston, Minnesota and Seattle in the fourth quarter. They got nothing done; they are 0-3.

“We need to learn how to win and right now we’re three pre-season games without showing the ability to win or finish or do the things we had to do to have a chance,” Haley said. “That’s where we are at.”

The players agree. “This is all about winning at this point,” said Damion McIntosh. “I think we just need to go out and do what we can and just think about winning. As a team I think we’ve forgotten how to win.”

The numbers certainly indicate that. A victory over the Rams will only stop the bleeding for a week, but right now anything is welcome with this franchise. St. Louis is 2-1 in the pre-season under new coach Steve Spagnuolo as the franchise has undergone many of the same changes that went down with the Chiefs: new leadership, new personnel department, new head coach. The only thing the Rams didn’t do was go out and get a quarterback.

But then the quarterback the Chiefs got won’t be on the field for the game, as Matt Cassel is out with a sprained MCL in his left knee. Brodie Croyle gets the start and the opportunity to be the starter there for the regular season opener against Baltimore is at stake. Croyle is coming back from his knee injury last year and has shown flashes of his ability to lead the team and throw the ball. Tyler Thigpen will play as well, but he’s hurting with cracked ribs that he and the team won’t talk about. How much the injury affected his performance last Saturday night against Seattle is unkown.

Haley knows his franchise needs a victory; it also needs to have as healthy a team as possible for next weekend’s trip to Baltimore.

St. Louis QB Jim Hart was 16 of 24 for 303 yards and two TDs.

On September 3, 1978, the Chiefs beat the Bengals 24-23 in their season opener at Riverfront Stadium.24-23, It was Marv Levy’s first regular season game as head coach. The Chiefs unveiled their new winged-T offense and it was immediately successful running the football, as they had 267 rushing yards on 69 carries, just three carries short of the NFL record for one game. Nine different players ran the ball for the Chiefs, led by Marc Bailey, who had 106 yards on 26 carries. Tony Reed, Ted McKnight and Arnold Morgado all had TD runs. K Jan Stenerud had a 19-yard FG. Chiefs led 24-9 going into the fourth quarter and held on as the Bengals scored twice in the final period.

On September 3, 1995, the Chiefs beat the Seahawks 34-10 in their season opener at the Kingdome. In what would become a 13-3 season, the Chiefs started off with excellent performances from QB Steve Bono, RB Greg Hill, WR Willie Davis and rookie returner Tamarick Vanover. Bono threw for 278 yards and three TDs. Hill ran for 109 yards on 15 carries. Davis caught six passes for 156 yards and 2 TDs and Vanover opened the second half with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. CB James Hasty had an interception and LB Derrick Thomas had a sack.

On September 3, 2000, the Chiefs lost to the Indianapolis Colts 27-14 in the season opener at Arrowhead Stadium with 78,357 fans in the seats. This game was tied 14-14 going into the fourth quarter, but the Colts scored on an 27-yard interception return by S Jeff Burris and a pair of FGs from Mike Vanderjagt. QB Elvis Grbac threw a pair of TD passes, for 11 yards to FB Tony Richardson and 21 yards to WR Derrick Alexander. But the Chiefs were unable to get a running game going, and RB Edgerrin James ran for 124 yards on 28 carries with a pair of TD runs. Colts WR Marvin Harrison had nine catches for 115 yards. LB Donnie Edwards had an interception of Peyton Manning, and DE Eric Hicks had a sack.

SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY …

Born on September 3, 1953 in Wichita Falls, Texas was WR Lawrence Williams. He joined the Chiefs in 1976 out of Texas Tech and played two seasons with the Chiefs (1976-77). Williams appeared in 18 games, with five starts. He caught eight passes for 103 yards.

Born on September 3, 1969 in Little Rock, Arkansas was LB/DT Keith Traylor. He joined the Chiefs in 1995 after sitting out the previous season. It’s been a long time huh? Something like this is why I’m glad we don’t know the future. How agonising would it have been if we knew what was to come from that post season game to today? At least we had hope….and we have hope today. GO CHIEFS!

  • September 3, 2009  - Mark says:

What I am waiting to see is this … supposedly Todd Haley has said that he could take 22 guys off the street and win two football games. Okay … but can he take 75 – 80 NFL players and win 1 preseason game? We’ll all know the answer to that tonight.

Anyone else looking forward to “The Saint Louis Brodie Croyle Massacre” this evening? Yes, hopefully we will see the (less than) fine career of one Brodie Croyle come to (a blazing car crash of) an end tonite.

Oh Brittle One, may your shoulder be as strong as it was kickoff weekend in New England last year and your knees as powerful to withstand injury as they were against the Titans. Then we can finally put this nonsense to rest. A strong arm and great accuracy don’t equal a hill of beans (a la what rolls around in Rin’s empty head)when your body won’t hold up and your heart is a cowardly place where no bravery can be found.

    Cassel, Thigpen, Gutierrez!

    I’m a douchebag.

I as a fan would like to see them win but I don’t want the coaching staff to go after this game without truly looking at all the players they need to see work and maybe earn the spot. Take for instance one of my favorites D.J. needs to earn his spot yes he might be on the team but he needs to go out and earn the position and there are other men in Chiefs uniforms that need to do the same as well as guys that could loose there job all together. I understand we need to win but if we do I just hope they understand they haven’t won nothing and Baltimore will kick there teeth in if they are not ready and the schedule doesn’t get easier.

    1.At Baltimore
    2.Oakland
    3.At Phily
    4.Giants
    5.Cowgirls
    6.At Washington
    7.Chargers
    Woooo Bye Week
    8.At Jacksonville
    9.At Oakland
    10. Steelers
    11.At Chargers
    12.Donkeys
    13.Bills
    14.Browns
    15.At Cincy
    16.At Donkeys

Are you kiddin me by the time Haley wakes up and smells the coffee this team could be 2-10 easily. If he gets 6 wins this season it will be quite the accomplishment. We just might be pickin in the top 5 next year also if this team doesn’t flat out play hard and that has to do with the players taken responsibilty for themselves not blamin the coach and just going out get it done.

You know it isn’t always just about losing; the Chiefs haven’t even been fun to watch in preseason for god sakes, other than the 1st Team defense.

This year will certainly be a challenge for the team and phans. However, from the decay of the Chiefs of the past will there be new growth. The ship is turning, but it will take time. Patience (for at least 1 year) is a must.

5-6 wins this year will be an accomplishment. A split with both the Raiders and Broncs, one surprise win in the NFC East (probably Wash) and 2 of 3 from Bills, Browns, Bengals…there is 5 right there.

    Go Chiefs!

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

Maybe it’s just me…but I don’t see a win tonight going too far as a confidence builder. Pre-season game #4? Easily the least important of the unimportant. Over 20 guys on each side won’t even be on their teams in a few days. And those are the guys that will get significant playing time tonight…guys that won’t make it, and guys that barely will. And we sure don’t need any more injuries to any of our starters.

Now…going to Baltimore and beating the Ravens? THAT would give the team and fans some confidence. Can you even IMAGINE the impact on our team for the season if we could pull THAT off? Winning a game that absolutely NOBODY gives us a chance to win? Beating a good team, when it counts…THAT’S when you’ll see guys with their heads held high, chests puffed out, believing in themselves. Beating the Rams tonight? Meh…

  • September 3, 2009  - kc mutt says:

A win would be nice but come on we need a win when the regular season starts. Except for the raiders, broncos. and the bengals, every team can kick our rear easily. The Chiefs’ roster is just two weak. Still I am hoping for 5 wins this year and look out for us in 2010. If Haley only wins 2 in 09, I am not sure he will not be judged by his own standards and we start over again. But right now I want to see a good will executed game, win or lose.

I’d rather have the Chiefs record than the Rams or Lions over the last 3 seasons.

I absolutely agree with Scott – preseason games are good to watch to see what the talent looks like; I don’t understand how anyone gets caught up in preseason records. Preseason W-L is pretty meaningless for many well-documented reasons, and from a W-L standpoint there is no more meaningless game than a preseason game 4. I won’t get much comfort from a Chiefs win tonight.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott D says:

Has anyone watched that TD drive against MN? I think the answer we are looking for is right there. It was a combination of runs, and sweeps and bootleg passing. Very little drop-back passes. With an uptempo offense that keeps the DLine running and chasing, AND keeps the QB off of the turf, we can move the ball. Cassel did that against MN. I think KC was headed this way against Seattle, but the injury to Cassel threw us off. Thigpen was good at that last year but hasn’t found the target consistently this year. Croyle is pretty accurate and can run this style as well. My point is – regardless of who the QB is (and for the sake of 60 million dollars I hope it will be Cassel)we can put some points on the board if we can lock into this and get some timing going. Maybe then, when the DL gets tired, the drop back passes will have more effectiveness. Just a thought. I am a Chiefs fan. How about you?

really your just proving how gay you really are…

  • September 3, 2009  - Randy says:

Yes, W-L records in the preseason are meaningless. But this team needs to see what it feels like to win. Taste just a brief drop of the sweet nectar that is victory. That stuff is addictive, you know. It might just give them that little extra bit of drive against Baltimore.

People say that this team lacks the talent to be a contender. They’re probably right. That doesn’t mean they can’t win some games. Maybe even more than a few. 9 games last year that we had within reach in the 4th quarter, with what I feel is a less talented team than this year, all they’re missing is the mental toughness to finish them out. That starts with one win, even if it might be in a preseason game.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

    I’m just curious…

Why do so many seem to make such a big deal about how much money Cassel is getting paid? It’s not like we’re having salary cap issues. Are YOU guys (that complain, or constantly bring it up) signing his paycheck? Then, what’s the big deal?

    Seriously.

  • September 3, 2009  - Mark says:

It’s totally meaningless and irrelevant if the Chiefs win or lose tonight, or in any exhibition game that doesn’t count. The ONLY thing that counts is staying healthy. If it meant anything, we could have put our starters back in all 3 games in the 4th quarter and won all or most of them against other team’s scrubs. But it’s meaningless, as tonight is. Most of the players playing the bulk of the game for both sides will be cut on Saturday. Bob, I love ya, but this headline is ridiculous.

Health insurance on the QB and RB: priceless!!!

Jim, you’re an optimist, no doubt. I figure that they can maybe split the dividional matchups and catch another team asleep at the wheel. That would put them at 4-12, which is just about all you can expect from this cobbled together group of journeymen.

  • September 3, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

    Scott,
I’m with ya beating the Ravens while very doubtful would be a huge turn in mentality if somehow we can get that “on any given Sunday” blessing and beat the Ravens it would give the team a boost and swagger. That is what this team needs the most to beat a physical team. As with this schedule they will need a presence about them. The Chiefs need to uptain a toughness. I remember a Ravens Monday Night game during the Vermeil era where Sheilds made it a mission to kick the crap out of Ray Lewis and he did all night. Lewis was seen on the sidelines bloody and frustrated and the Chiefs line played with a swagger and toughness the rest of the season.

  • September 3, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

Yes everyone I know this line is a FAR FAR cry from that line but if they could get that attitude it would help.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

Yeah, SG…I almost skipped your post. Be more careful.

The line problems will be addressed. Not as fast as yesterday…like we would all like it to be. But, it will be fixed. If not until next year…then that’s just the way it is. At least our QB will have a year under his belt by then. If he doesn’t get killed this year, of course.

I still think that if we could settle on a group, and put them in there…that we’d be at least a LITTLE better. All this shuffling different guys in and out and to different sides and positions? I understand that concept to a point. But, the time has come to make the decisions and go with it.

“We need to learn how to win and right now we’re three preseason games without showing the ability to win or finish or do the things we had to do to have a chance” – Todd Haley

Rin hath no need say it again aft this…preseason means EVERYTHING, this from the lips the Coach.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

So Haley should tell the team it’s okay to lose a pre-season game? Even though it is, and everyone knows it…I don’t think you’ll EVER hear a coach tell his team that. Not a good one, anyway.

Besides…the quote says “without showing the ABILITY to win or finish or do the things we had to do to have a chance”.

I guess if we would have looked like total sh*t, but won a game by a point or two…that would be MUCH more important than showing the ABILITY to win a game, but coming up a little short. Right?

  • September 3, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

I try to look through my rose covered glasses but the Chiefs play keeps throwing sh*t on them.

I do believe Pioli/Haley are headed in the right direction and yes it will most likely be another year before the O-Line is retooled. I just hope they look to bring other linemen behind whatever group they endup with as how we ended up with this group that does have a couple meaning two players. I really like Albert and Waters can still run with the best and has seemed to buy into or at least play well with Haley. I liked hearing he was conducting extended workouts with the O-Line during camp thats promising and showing he is TRYING to lead this group and get some comraderie.

Haley should try to motivate this team to win and shouldn’t put out that winning this game is meaningless. So that the coaching staff can make the right decision on who will be the right players for this team to give them the best chance of winning in the regular season and hopefully someday the playoffs.

  • September 3, 2009  - Hank says:

Let me throw out a thought I have had for two years: If I was a head coach and I was attempting to build some consistency with off/def units that were “new” to each other I would do the following:

1st Preseason Game: Play all my “assumed” starters the entire first half. (After that game replace any starter who is bettered by another)

2nd Preseason Game: Play all my “assumed” starters the entire first half and into the third quarter.

3rd Preseason Game: Play all my “assumed” starters into the second quarter, then replace all starters with second unit and let then play until the end of third quarter.

4th Preseason Game: Play all second and third unit players entire game.

Rationale: Builds continuity early, produces best chance of Preseason wins (momentum), allows more “healing” time for starters before opener and still gives enough evaluation period of new guys (especially in third PS game). What do you think?

  • September 3, 2009  - ILChiefsFan says:

    Hank,

Not a bad idea. The problem from the Chiefs standpoint is that the new regime probably only had about 2-3 guys on the “assumed” starter list, even after game 2. They’ve been intent on evaluating a lot of players in different combinations, and that’s hurt them in the preseason.

  • September 3, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

    Hank,

The other problem with this is as you know we have already made some cuts going into the 4th and to make those cuts we need to know they just won’t fit. Also you need to see how some of the 2nd and 3rd unit guys play with the starting units as there is a rotation we don’t throw 11 new players in for a period of time during the game. I understand the point though as it would close the gap of learning how each other react and execute during situations to build that trust that each individual will do there job.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

    Speaking of cuts…

I wonder if tonights game will be the deciding factor on whether we keep Thigpen or Gutierrez as the 3rd QB. Provided Brodie doesn’t get injured, that is. One of these guys is not going to be a Chief much longer.

  • September 3, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

U know it’s sad when u start 2 believe a guy who hasnt started a game since his high school days, is now your “Franchise” qb! Dont be fooled my fellow brethern, just b/c our qb play was mediocre at best since Trent got hurt doesnt mean we should accept another “Rob Johnson” impersonator in a guy like Cassell. Go Chiefs in 2009 and Beyond!!

  • September 3, 2009  - SG says:

“One of these guys is not going to be a Chief much longer.”

Correct – 1 guy goes somewhere else.

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

Ummm…hate to break the news to you AlextheGREAT, but Cassel started for the Patriots last year. Led them to an 11-5 record. I’d prefer Peyton Manning, personally. But, he wasn’t available. Neither was Brady, Eli, Brees, or Big Ben. We could have tried to get Cutler, I suppose. He seems like a muture young man. Or maybe an aging vet at the end of their career…like Kurt Warner, maybe?

But, Pioli made the deal for Cassel. So I decided to see what he’s got…and give him a chance. Best QB on our roster right now. Until that changes, I’ll hope he plays well…and doesn’t get killed behind our weak O-line.

Oh yeah,I’m tired of guys saying Cassell led the patriots 2 an 11-5 record thats completely fictional. I think people need 2 start giving credit where its due and thats 2 the front office, scouting and great head coach in New England! What we havent had in 20 plus years!

  • September 3, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

  • September 3, 2009  - Scott says:

    Alexthe”GREAT”,

Sounds like you already have Cassel buried, to me. How’s that giving him a chance? But, fair enough. I think we’ll see before the year is over whether or not he’s the real deal. And he may not be. Too soon to tell. WAY too soon.

And I do give credit to New England’s front office. Where is it that you think Pioli came from? Or are you one of those guys that thinks he did nothing there but fetch Bill’s coffee?

As far as the “completely fictional” 11-5 record that Cassel led the Patriots to? I’ll take that over the REALITY of the 1 win Thigpen led the Chiefs to, any day.

  • September 3, 2009  - Chris_Texas says:

Well I see this blog went south. Anyway Cassel might not be a future probowl QB or a top 5 but he does have the potential. I don’t care what team it was on to go 11-5 with any team in this league especially for someone who hasn’t started a game since high school is pretty good..

  • September 3, 2009  - Rose Coloured Glasses says:

Even through rose colored glasses, 4-12 is looking pretty good considering what most folks say about this team. I could go completely off my rocker and say they’re on their way to the playoffs this year, but I haven’t lost touch with all reality just yet.

The teams gonna be a mess this year, and maybe slightly less of a mess next year. The ‘Peterson 5-year plan(+15)’ to put together a team just good enough to keep fans in the seats finally ran its course and this is what’s left.

I do have high hopes that a new owner and a new regime can eventually put things right.

This team will go 9 and 7 or 10 and 6. The first half of the schedule is brutal. But I do think we can sqeeze out wins against Giants or Cowboys. The Raiders for sure and the Chargers at home. So before the bye if we can go 3 and 4 the schedule is weak enough second half of the season where we can win 6 to 7 more games against browns, bengals, raiders, and broncos twice etc. Jus got to get through the first half of the season.

  • September 3, 2009  - EDs Mom says:

This team will go 0 and 16 or 1 and 15. The first half of the schedule is brutal. I don’t think we can squeeze out wins against anyone. The Raiders will also destroy us, and the Chargers the same.
So before the bye if we can go 0 and 4 the schedule is still more than we can handle the second half of the season where we can win 0 to 1 game against browns, bengals, raiders, or broncos twice etc. Just got to get through the first half of the season so we can stumble through the second half with no expectations at all.

Scott just for the record, the sweeps and bootlegs are probably mostly out the window. We got rid of Gailey who proved that he could contour offensive strategy to the players. Halley with his down your throat style of coaching has my patience for a few years, I just hope they don’t can him and bring in a new system before we see if he can really build something.

  • September 3, 2009  - findthedr says:

    1st half assessments:

All other teams in the NFL are playing their backups except these 2. lol.

    Qbs:
    1. Croyle shows his arm strength by threading the needle numerous times. That being said, he still doesnt show any “touch” on the ball (like Cassel is able to) and just fires the ball to a spot regardless where on the field. This is great on intermediate routes, but he is not getting enough “air” underneath the ball on deep throws.
    2. He has taken some tough hits and bounced back. Each time he is sacked the commentators scream instinctively “croyle is down” as if its a season ending injury, and when they show him on the field he is walking around fine. If you think of all the qbs that have been injured behind the chiefs offensive line over the years (croyle, green, huard, thigpen, cassel) one must think it might not be the qbs, but have more to do with the line.
    3. He is very calm, but sometimes too calm (i.e no sense of urgency). Had a delay of game.

    Offensive LIne:
    1. whoever is at RT sucks (whether it is McIntosh or Nudukwe). They cannot pass block.
    2. as a whole the line seems to be doing a better job then they did against seatle.

    WRs:
    1. bradley makes a nice catch and move to get upfield.
    2. Bowe has been draped by the st.louis cbs all night
    3. engram made a nice catch

    TE:
    1. Sean Ryan making alot of catches…1 of them big! He is showing he can be a recieving threat in the middle of the field
    2. None of our TE can block…which was supposed to be their strength. Maybe they need to go through Oline drills..or maybe the team just needs to replace downs in which they will obviously block with nimble offensive lineman.
    3. Cottam is invisible. He is clearly 2nd string and has been suplanted by Sean Ryan.

    RB:
    1. LJ fought for yards and got a long run
    2. Savage broke alot of tackles for a 70yrd run. He isnt fast, but is a good all around back.
    3. Jamal charles is unable to find a seem
    4. Javaris WIlliams isnt doing anything and will be cut, IMO…maybe going to PS

    Defense:
    Dline:
    1. once again doing a good job allowing LBs to make plays.

    LBs:
    1. still a liability in pass coverage, but I am getting encouraged and expect to see improvement as the season progresses
    2. Vrabel makes alot of smart decisions throughout the game. he is a complete LB
    3. Hali seems to be a good compliment for Vrabel as a starting OLB. He got a sack and is able to pressure. He is much quicker at the decreased weight, and is thriving not being on the LOS.
    4. Biesel made some smart decisions on running plays, and DJ had a tackle behind the LOS.
    5. Corey mays had another sack
    6. turk mcbride also making tackles when given the oppurtunity
    7. As a whole the LB unit was considered a weakness, and these guys have probably stepped up more then any other position group and are showing some quality and depth. i expect them to improve as they get more comfortable in the new defense

    Safties:
    1. McGraw has had a great 1st half making hard tackles, and breaking up plays.
    2. Dujuan Morgan has really stepped up the last 2 games. Got an INT. Shows speed and tackling ability. Maybe the light finally came on for him.

    CB:
    1. Donald Washington got Flowers starting spot. Gave up some passes, but defended some passes. SO far has been a sure tackler
    2. Carr and Leggit are continue to play and play well.

    ST:
    1. Colquitt having another good game as expected
    2. Succop is perfect tonight in FG. His kickoffs havent gone in the end zone, but are close (around the 1). Would be nice for him to get more touchbacks.
    3. Jevon Belcher made a good ST tackle. I think he deserves to be on the team
    4. punt/kickoff returners continue to suck. Have bobled/fumbled, made poor decisions (allowing balls to be downed at 1), and getting poor field position.

    Coaching/offensive play calling
    1. the offensive play calling has been more vertical throws. Thats good, but sometimes on 3rd and short they have tried to get a big play instead of just trying to move the chains. As a whole the playcalling today has been more aggressive and improved compared to Gailey’s calls so far this season.
    2. They have been asking croyle to get the ball behind center which is unfair because the line cant pass block for very long….they need to go more exclusively to shotgun
    3. They continue to rotate Olineman when the starting QB is in (croyle tonight). That is completely unfair to him and the other players because their is no continuity. You cant expect to go deep when behind a patchwork line that havent played with each other for very long.
    4. Haley is angry with everyone. he is scowling all the time, jawwing with croyle. At this rate I dont think he will be able to hold it together for the entire season.

And our very own Rin Tin Tin…STILL unable to let go of Herm’s nutsack. LMAO!!! Gawd…I can’t remember a time when Rin was so amusing as he has been tonight. Sad and pathetic, totally all on his own on an island of Chief hatred…but amusing just the same. Ha ha! It’s all yours, buddy.

    so far 2nd half:
    1. Thigpen needs to be benched. poor mechanics, poor decisions, throwing jumpballs (that sometimes work sometimes dont), poor accuracy. He clearly is not comfortable playing out of center, and the chiefs are forcing the issue. In the longterm it is better for him, but in the short-term it isnt playing to his strengths and he is making poor decisions.
    2. 2nd string Dline players are superior to 2nd/3rd string st.louis players
    3. backup offensive lineman of the chiefs are playing better than st.louis backup dlineman.
    4. morgan contines to make plays.
5.Taurus Johnson just got himself cut with the roughing the kicker. lol.
    6. At this point I hope Thigpen is cut, but its too bad the chiefs missed out on getting a 5th rounder.
    7. Battle had some nice runs. Gut implemented that screen better than any of the chiefs qbs so far.
    8. Gilberry and Tank Tyler are playing well.
    9. obviously Haley wants this win extremely badly, but I dont think chiefs are going to get it. Too bad for the chiefs players because he is going to keep grinding at them.
    10. Based on some comment Pioli made on tv (something about smaller window of success [need clarification]) it seems that Haley is under extreme pressure to succeed quickly.

The bad news? That was the STL LAMBS defense that choked s offense to death.

The worse news: the RAVENS defense comes next – IN BALTIMORE! Hide the women, children AND men!

    BALT 598 – .2 (alternate: BALT 23 KC 0/3)

    R.I.P. Chiefs 2009 season…
