Why Football Teams Must Have Lawyers

We don’t spend a lot of time working political angles on this site; too many trap doors there and the rough and tumble, well sometimes it is bloodier than football.

But (you knew there was a but coming, didn’t you!) I can’t walk away from this one.

The website Politico.com reported Wednesday evening that the Federal Election Commission revealed this week that it had dismissed a complaint alleging that the Chiefs had illegally boosted Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign.

The issue is a video that the Chiefs ran on the big screens at Arrowhead Stadium on November 2nd before a game with Tampa Bay. Featured in one of those videos was McCain, who was two days away from Election Day. In the video, McCain praised U.S. military personnel and honored the “hardships, danger and sacrifices you have born so valiantly for us.”

There were other testimonials shown as well, since this was the Chiefs closest game to November 11 and Veteran’s Day.

At the time, there was a bit of a stir over the video, because there was not also a video featuring Barack Obama. Naturally, Obama supporters got upset.

What never came out was that the Chiefs had asked the Obama campaign for a similar video from their candidate honoring the military. But the Democratic candidate’s people dropped the ball and could not get it done.

Democratic supporter Dave Raffel of Parkville filed a complaint with the FEC back in December. Over the last six years, Raffel has contributed $45,000 to Democratic candidates and causes and he said in his complaint that “this incident could have unfairly influenced the outcome of the Presidential race in Missouri.

McCain won Missouri by 4,000 votes, not that it helped him much as Obama won the election.

In their response to the complaint, Chiefs lawyers wrote that “McCain’s tribute, while disturbing to Mr. Raffel, is not the type of speech or expenditure that (federal election law) was promulgated to regulate.”

The FEC agreed with that view and dismissed the complaint.

Raffel… where has Rin heard that name before?

    * Mr. Sally Jesse Raffel? No…that’d be Rafael.

    * ‘Raffel In Arms’? No, that was Kenneth Roberts epic “Rabble In Arms”.

    * A member the common Democratic rabble perhaps?

Perhaps, but cannot say for certain having ne’er met Dave. However, that in these last 6 years he has contributed $45,000 to Democratic candidates causes me to want to blame him for the state the economy…he’s just encouraging them, that’s all.

    Dave… cut, it, out.

One of the enjoyable aspects of football is the fact it draws individuals from all walks of life, ethnic, socioeconomic and political backgrounds together through a common interest free of the divisions these aspects of our lives create on a daily basis. It is good that our right to distraction of choice is not infringed upon by the larger concerns of life. It’s also good that it promotes parochial discourse focused on the limited aspects of what’s happening with our team and the joy or heartache it provides us. On the other hand, if healthcare reform happens one can only hope that mental health benefits will be provided for all of us subjected to the daily bull%* of a certain curmudgeonly and skeptical poodle.

“you are obviously the smartest man in the world”

    - and the most interesting; as you & the rest make me so, stay thirsty my friends…

“could you please tell us what the meaning of life is”

    - Rin loves it when they beg; yes, I can, here it is – “I have come that you may have life and have it more abundantly. You’re welcome.”

    “and what meth feels like?”

    - quite leathery given the fact he lived to be some 969 years of age; however he was still more smooth than the coached Chiefs offense…

    “Awesome…thanks.”

    - stupendous your affirmation my genius…de nada.

    “Go Chiefs!”

    - yes, 0-16 in 2009…

Joe…I hear ya man, but s/he doesn’t really bother me. It is kind of fun (for us) and sad (for it) all at the same time.

Plus the more we keep it trolling this site, the less time s/he is out lurking around schools and playgrounds. Just trying to keep our fine communities safe.

    Go Chiefs!

Glad to see the FEC acutally got something correct. So would Mr. Raffel if he would have just made an inquiry prior to going to the commission.

Not sure why his address is posted though. Not real cool. It was already confirmed in the article that he was an Obama contributor.
