From The Mouth of Todd

From the Truman Sports Complex

Todd Haley met with the media horde Tuesday morning and in 26 minutes there were a lot of things said and a lot of ground covered about the Chiefs their most recent game and the future.

Here are the highlights.

ON WHERE HIS TEAM IS RIGHT NOW

We are 0-2 in the first quarter of the season. That’s the way I look at the season. That’s the way I would like my team to look at the season is in quarters. That’s the way I was taught a long time ago. We’ve got two games left in this quarter and we have to find a way to get a couple back.”

THE TEAM’S QUARTERBACK SITUATION WITH MATT CASSEL AND BRODIE CROYLE

“I think there were a lot of positives in Matt’s performance. There were a few that we would like to have back. I believe a quarterback in a game has seven critical decisions, or throws. A total of seven key plays in 79 plays that really separate winning and losing. There were clearly seven in this game that we would clearly like to do something different.

I like a lot about this guy. Anybody watching you can see the competitiveness; here’s a guy that is injured that was not running with that thought in his mind. He added 34 yards of rushing to our game and when you do that, it’s positive.

“That being said, I’m excited about Brodie’s progress. Brodie getting to play in the first game, got his feet under him, started to gain some confidence and that was clear in this past week’s practices. I expect all those guys to improve every week. That’s their job, and my job, to make our quarterback better every day.”

ON WHY JAMAAL CHARLES & BRAD COTTAM WERE INACTIVE AGAINST THE RAIDERS

“We are going to continue to do everything we can to figure out who the guys are that give us the best chance to win. We have some limitations roster-number wise, so there is some juggling that has to go one. We had a guy in (Dantrell) Savage that sat the first week and we felt it was real important to see; he had done enough in the pre-season to be real excited about and we wanted to see how Dantrell competed. There is going to be somebody left out early week. That’s been made very clear to everyone. That’s the way it’s going to continue, until we find out who those guys are. It’s happening at other positions also. It will continue to happen until we feel like we are going in the direction we want to go.”

WHAT HE SAW FROM SAVAGE

“I was encouraged by Dantrell. There were a couple plays that he would like to have back, but I think the kid is a football player. He has a nice feel for the game. He’s obviously very quick, he helps you in the return game, and he’s very good out of the backfield. That being said, I think Jamaal (Charles) had a very good week of practice last week and like I said, when you have good competition at a position there is going to be somebody that gets left out occasionally.”

ON HIS RUN DEFENSE

“I’ve got nothing but good to say about the defense in stopping the run. That’s (Oakland) a legitimate running attack that has pounded out some yards here in the past and against some other teams and to hold those guys to where we did I thought was a positive, positive sign.

“I think one of the things that went on in the Baltimore game, we felt like they were going to play one type of game and they played an entirely different game. At the end of the half I think it was 31 passes to 6 or 7 runs, which was a drastic, drastic change from what was expected. I think it got us a little out of kilter and we never quite recovered from it. When the runs started, we were not able to fit and do the things necessary to stop a very good running game.

“I thought against the Raiders the defense responded for the most part.”

Interesting quotes from Haley about or run defense “I think one of the things that went on in the Baltimore game, we felt like we were going 2 play 1 type of game and they played an entirely different game.” So u mean 2 tell me u went into a game with only a plan A no B? Wow, I think Herm was critized for this last year every game. But u Haley supporters are right, Haley is a huge upgrade compared 2 Herm! Go chiefs in 2009 and Beyond!!!!!!!

not much can be expected from a team that has a new coach, new gm, and turns over 30 players in a single offseason. Not much but progress anyways, and progress is what I see.

    Go Chiefs!

  • September 22, 2009  - larry says:

yeah but the failure to adapt was clancy’s not haley’s. Granted haleys is the head coach, but he has obviously given clancy a lot of control, as haley comes from the offensive side of the ball. He does need to be able to make adjustments when necessary, both in offense and defense. And he needs to forget the prevent d and stick with being aggressive, that last oakland drive was bs.

  • September 22, 2009  - Kenny says:

Jamaal probably didn’t help himself by announcing KC’s intention to run before the Baltimore game.

  • September 22, 2009  - Blake says:

If you were going to Baltimore what would you try and do? Stop the run or pass? Going off of last year, you would go into that game planning on stopping the run, every single coach in the NFL would expect Baltimore to run the ball way more than pass. Yes he made a mistake by not changing the defense, but he still made the right decision to plan on stopping the run. We were also without Flowers, probably our best player on defese, so it made us look even worse on defense.

Haley is as in over his head as the sky is the earth.

What pissed me off last year was that when we made mistakes Herm was complacent with it. He never got upset or seemed to care too much. At least Haley lights a fire under thier butts! They know when they screw up they better not let it happen again. It’s kinda like discipline with kids – if they fear the punishment, they seem to miraculously fall in line! TRUST THIS – WE WILL NOT GO 0-16. Too many people care about winning now & that’s a GREAT IMPROVEMENT OVER LAST YEAR!

Murphy’s law says we shock everyone by beating the Eagles next Sunday…

So much material/inclination Rin Tin Tin skewer, so little internet paper…

“We are 0-2 in the first quarter of the season. That’s the way I look at the season.”

    - translation: the glass isn’t full nor is it even half…it is empty. I am thirsty and my tongue be swollen as my head, but shall admit said? Nay – never!

Why? Because [drumroll] “I can take any 22 guys from off the street and… go 0-20.” [rimshot / CYMBAL CRASH!]

Just 14 more weeks of this folks and he’s history in Kaycee…

“That’s the way I would like my team to look at the season is in quarters.”

    - translation: instead of accepting the reality that is ‘living in the moment’ of W/L. We’re 0-6 but I prefer to look at it in quarters- this way, why it almost looks as if we’re doing better.

“chiefsfandumb let me give you an example of how I ‘check’ comprehend my indubitable sense of illogic: if you count preseason & the regular together, why we’ve actually WON – quarters that is, not games of course.”

“Of the 24 quarters to date in 2009, we have in fact prevailed in 7 of them… I consider those wins. Now, the fact we’ve also managed in 4 of those quarters to tie the opposition means that we’ve only lost the other 13 which is why I say we’re making ‘real’ progress here.”

Sunday pre-game pep talk in Philly -

addresses Chiefs – “Alright men…the goal from now on will be ‘to win more quarters’. IF we can win enough of those – say, oh…4 in a game – we might perhaps just maybe with luck any be able to overcome my coaching & manage to win an entire game.”

Trnslation: Green green grass of golf having gone the way of Edsel & football too being beyond this Peter’s Principle grasp, next destination his aft blowing sunshine KC will be employ in the ’smoke & mirrors’ department Obuma healthcare campaign…

“That’s the way I was taught a long time ago.”

    - yes, class Valedictorian as such: right ‘check’
Literal translation speak: “We’re drowning under the warm wet dead weight has soiled pantleg mine via “any 22 will do” wild haired egomaniacal puffery mine, going under now for the third time Sunday in Philly. I’m confused men, and scared… won’t someone help me please or at least get me a towel?”

“We’ve got two games left in this quarter and we have to find a way to get a couple back.”

    - reverse psychology: now stead of quarters in a game, it’s the game more so the ‘games’ within a quarter…which is to say via using some ‘check’ pretzel logic:

“Winning 2 games in a quarter will result in our glass becoming half full men…so, any questions? No? Great! Alright men, let’s celebrate- laps for everyone!!!”

Yes, last year the Herm was criticized, but it was his 3rd year as the HC in KC and his 8th overall as a HC. This is Haley’s first go round, I think a little perspective is in order.

Then Herm was lied to via jr. speak “I hope Herm comes back” – Herm’s reaction being “I expect to be back.”

As such your dunged purview Stiv, f 1 year = 3 then “any 22 will do” equals 16-0…or should.

Rin doesn’t realize he himself is perpetuating a double standard by complaining non stop second game of haley’s career. If the same had happened to herm, would that have been fair rin? once haley wins 6 games in two season total, you will have earned the right to complain. I’m liked herm too buddy, but HE HAD HIS CHANCE. You wanna talk about double standards – look in the mirror. How can you demand a fair trial for herm and roast haley alice before the third game of his career? Do you not see all the fallacies you commit? Do you not understand how your logic is completely twisted and self serving? No one agrees with you get over it and your man crush on herm. It’s tired.

No that is simply false, Herm wanted to do the youth movement even tho Clark stated clearly he wanted to see improvement. Well the team didn’t improve, it got worse, so Clark fired the fools running the team and brought in what he thought was the best available talent to turn the Chiefs around.

Only a fool would judge the new regime this quickly, especially considering the train wreck they inherited.

You don’t take out your anger towards one person on someone else. Didn’t your parents teach you anything rin? Herm was a victim of circumstance, get over it and stop riding the new guy. You probably apply the same principles to politics…”Bush was always complained about as being a horrid president, so I’m going to ride obama even though he has hardly had a year in office, and even though what they’re doing isn’t even comparable ( lying into war, biggest attack on civil liberties in us history vs healthcare reform) I’m going to take it all out on the new guy. In fact, thinking about it, it’s exactly the same, simpleton.

    - yes

    “that is simply false”

“Herm wanted to do the youth movement even tho Clark stated clearly he wanted to see improvement.”

    - which is why at the end of the year jr. said “I hope Herm comes back” and Herm added “I expect to be back” right? Because jr. was unhappy with Herm & Herm was just playing along… right… ‘check’

“Well the team didn’t improve, it got worse, so Clark fired the fools running the team and brought in”

    - two new ones… & Do you think 0-6 in ‘09 is improvement? If jr. was in a hurry to win in 2008 what must he expect 2009? Not to worry, ol’ Dallas Oily will show up at the end o the season & affirm ’search’ & ‘check’ – before firing them both.

“what he thought was the best available talent to turn the Chiefs around.”

    - 0-6 & the ONLY new GM/Head Coach combo NFL to be winless in 2009 – ‘the best’ two candidates according to chiefsfandumb…

“Only a fool would judge the new regime this quickly”

    - only a fool would believe in two other fools & – how are they working out so far? heh heh heh

“especially considering the train wreck they inherited.”

    - which they turned into 0-6 football Armageddon – evil has won as the Empire same wearing Black affirmed Sunday in Arrowhead… sweet.

Both Bob and RTT have alluded to a promise made by Clark Hunt to keep Herm around until he could complete the rebuild of the Chiefs. I’ve yet to actually see this promise quoted in any public forum; is there someplace I can view it for the record?

Statements such as “I have complete confidence in X” and “I think X is doing a great job” are not promises of future employment. Examples abound of such statements being followed by corportate bloodletting.

The less than 70000 fans for the 2009 new season home opener Sunday vs the team’s most long-hated rival – ‘THE RADUHS’ – speaketh to how much fans are ‘buying’ into the new regime.

That 11,377 attendance final game of 1983 vs DEN is in imminent danger come (if not before) then by end o season home 12-20-09 vs CLEV; KC should be 0-13 heading into that game.

Perhaps the days head count will match the “22 anys” that the late chiefs coach uttered before his final season in KC began…

  • September 22, 2009  - el cid says:

I fear Haley is taking full advantage of “first year”. Wins or loses do not matter to the 09 Chiefs. We all know wins will come if Haley is a real head coach, losses if not. Even if the team goes 0-7 before a win, Haley is safe. But there are 2 or 3 good head coaches sitting on the sidelines waiting until 2010. If the fans at the stadium stop showing up, the Hunts may be forced to make a move. That is correct Herm was a miserable coach in KC and was paid and did not earn a fat salary for three years, should have been not hired or fired at the end of the second. Haley can follow Herm right out the door and the trigger will get pulled faster. No matter what the Chiefs have to win games, nothing else really matter.

He looked like he wanted to throw a tantrum. this guy is in to win and will not accept failure on a weekly and yearly basis.

Look I liked Herm too he was a good man, but things have changed. We have got a winner at the Helm, and I will not be judgemental at all for at least the first year. Our team sucks right now. Obviously. Haley is not Jesus and it will take some time to turn this thing around. He feels failure and dissapointment when we lose…..wow, haven’t seen that in a while. I would not mind if we signed Haley to a ten year guaranteed contract tomorrow. This guy cares a lot about this team and is doing everything in his power to see to it that we win. Au contraire… Herm said 80-85% in an off-hand comment when asked: that would be 45 players as 85%, 42 being 80%; as it stands even with Herm gone- so the gist matters no more – the new not so dynamic duo & even with a new system different scheme etc. than Herm’s, still retained more of Herm’s Chiefs – 59% – than did they their own hand-picked/drafted/signed free agents etc.

    VERY telling…

Bob whats up with your media colleagues trying to create a quarterback controversey. Come on I litsen to Haley press conference today and almost through up. Last year 2 or 3 years Brodie’s been injured and your other media buddies had written the guy off. Now he has one good game and Cassell comes back off a MCL injury a little rusty and after two games your media buddies are ready to put Brodie back out there. Talk about flip flop. I’m not saying Brodie isn’t a good QB, but don’t expect Pioli and Haley to give up on Cassell after 1 game and 60 million dollars just being payed to the guy. Botttom line both are good QB’s but Croyle still needs to prove he can be healthy before becoming the franchise QB of any team. Give Cassell a chance to play a full season before we go throwing the guy under bus and wanting the back up to come in and save the day.

Every1 is talking about the mess Herm left…but 2 be honest, there is only 2 things I think we are missing and its not a great o-line but a solid line and a pass rusher…..screw a TE we had a great 1 and we gave him away for nothing u wont find 1 like him again!

  • September 22, 2009  - el cid says:

sorry Great, we are missing a OL, at least C, RG, and RT. Albert has not done much this year to make you believe he is the answer at LT. WR is missing at least one player maybe two. TE not a major player for a Haley offense but has to block and have hands, one guy not three. DL could use all new, most of our current players are just guys and you need beasts in the 3-4 (I see Pioli’s pick Jackson as only a maybe and Magee not in the running). LB at least 2 starters and DJ may leave if he does not feel the love from Haley. CB, we seem set baring injury (Pioli drafted on but do not know why). S, Brown is a short term answer so look for a starter. Seem set at K and P but where is the returner, do not have one. Looks like a lot of missing parts to me.

Todd, learn the lesson quick man…you play to win the game. You coach to win the game. Your training camp is over big guy – the games now count. The word I have to use in conclusion of the game against Oakland was “suck” as in the team does “suck.” We have chances to get better. There are signs of life. That being said – we gave this one away to our arch-rival – and I for one Coach Haley am calling you on the carpet, just I have when Herm made many poor decisions last season.

“Sorry guys. I know that Rin Tin Tin can be a frustrating jerk, and I regret that he’s chased away some quality posters. I just don’t want to go to the trouble of making a log in system for my website right now. If the problem continues, I may consider it.”

Come on, Bob. Do it. You’re losing readers. It can’t be THAT big of a pain in the ass. Create the log in, appoint a moderator or two, and forget it. You had a good thing going…then the BS came. A lot of good posters have left already. Don’t lose more. This place has the potential to be great. Or it can continue to go down the toilet. It’s really YOUR choice.

And just for the record, it’s funny how some of you “feed the Troll” and talk about the Troll…just after you jump my ass for doing it. I see how it is.

One more thing. I’ll stand by my Rin Tin Tin is Whitlock “conspiracy theory”…thank you very much. Open your eyes to the facts, people. Those of you that think it’s Bob? Get friggin’ real. Bob has WAY too much class to pull that crap. If you can’t see that…then WTF are you even doing here?

  • September 22, 2009  - Alexthe"GREAT" says:

el cid, thats your opinion…but it sounds like 2 me your trying 2 build a pro bowl team on a John Madden game or something! I said solid not great players, no team in this league is solid across the board that is just facts. Our defense shows great promise, but if our line wont pass block or open up lanes for LJ then we will lose every game unless our defense creates points. Any real GM or orginization knows that in order 2 compete with the big boys u need special players on the OL and DL, the rest of the positions u can substitute with mediocre players. Most players are just flash in the pants who want the big payoff but as soon as they sign a long term deal they just quit. Take Cassell for instance solid player but theres nothing special about him, but I hope he can prove me wrong!

Every time I read Whitlock or Rin Tin Tin I get the same sick feeling so I’d buy that they are indeed the same person. But honestly I don’t care. Mr. Hunt is the only one with a vote and I for one trust his decisions.

  • September 23, 2009  - arrowhead1978 says:

Kenny, how about if Kolb doesn’t handle the blitz well at all we see Vick or Garcia enter the game, hopefully haley the great winner, (coming from a 9-7 team last year that made an improbable run to the superbowl) has a plan b defense to be able to counter that situation… because if he believes the eagles aren’t going to bring in any other QB he would be sadly mistaken… Vick might just see playing time to get him more in game shape, so I hope he is practicing for that type of player that can move around the pocket because we all know from last year Garcia can (tampa bay game)…

Also for all the people who say that someone can’t come in and change the team to a winner in one year, how come father-in-law did it last year in Miami, did Pioli not take notes? or how about the Falcons last year…

Alex the great I agree, you need to have that talented player(s) on the O and D lines to make offense, it all starts in the trenches as in any war… The chiefs had a great running game when they had a great O-line, same with the defense…
They need another Dan Saleamua… (not sure about the spelling)

I for one do believe, if given a final year, Herm would have the chiefs defense playing alot better this year in the cover 2, the secondary would have been better looking than what it is looking like this year, but it’s a new defense so they have another year to learn it and gel together, but the problem is now we dont have the down lineman for the 3-4 they switched too.

I quit reading some of the ignorant, childish posts a long time ago. My advice, do the same. We’ll get our first clue on Sunday whether the Chiefs D has really come a LONG way, or if the Raiders are just bad. If the former, this team will get much better quickly. If not, it’s going to be another year before we see any real sustainable success as Haley feels his way through this.

  • September 23, 2009  - el cid says:

Great right again. All I meant was there is much not to like about the current Chiefs, half glass full or empty. This team has to many “guys” and no all pros. They may develope but not for some time and I have no patience left. Carl brought in Herm will high hopes but he turned into something you throw away with the cat litter. I do not believe Carl realized just how bad Herm was. While that was the past and we look to the future, there is no quick fix in the Pioli/Haley plan. We just sit on our collective rear and hope to see a win here and there. This could go on for years while other team seem to find positive change in shorter periods. It may work or it may not, the wait is tiring.
