Practice Update 8/24 A.M. & Trade News

From the Truman Sports Complex

Todd Haley told his team last week that leaving Wisconsin did not mean the end of training camp. It was just a change of venue.

If they doubted the coach’s words, the players found out Monday morning what Haley was talking about. In the first of two practices on the day, the Chiefs were in full pads. They wrapped up the session with three plays of live goal line action.

That proved a not so good moment for the offense. From the location where the media is allowed to watch practice, it was hard to decipher whether the ball crossed the goal line; even if it did, the offense had a rough go. On the first play, RB Larry Johnson ran wide left and was suddenly brought down by a speading missle wearing No. 49, SS Bernard Pollard.  On the second play, Johnson leaped over the middle of the pile and somewhere in going up or coming down, he lost the football. Pollard ended up with it and took  off running in the other direction.

On the third play, Jackie Battle ran behind left tackle, but he too coughed up the football at some point. It was recovered by the defense.

“It was a little bit of a slow start, but we picked  it up as we went and it ended up being a fairly competitive, productive practice,” said Haley. “We can’t have practice start like that ever, if we expect to be any good.”

The Chiefs are in the process of finalizing  announced a trade with the Miami Dolphins that will bring offensive linemen Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe to the team. If they pass physicals they will join the roster on Monday. Both players passed Chiefs physicals and should be on the field for the afternoon practice. Alleman is a third-year player who entered the league in 2007 with New Orleans out of the University of Akron. He started five games for the Dolphins at guard last season. Ndukwe started 15 games at guard for the Dolphins last season. He’s out of Northwestern and the Chiefs will be the fifth team of his NFL career. He entered the league in 2005 as a undrafted college free agent with New Orleans. Both Alleman and Ndukwe played their high school football in Ohio.

To open roster spots for the new linemen, the Chiefs released OLB Vince Redd and C/G Brian De La Puente.

Other moments, details and stuff from the morning workout:

– Still no arrowheads on the helmets for Haley. OLB Mike Vrabel did have one crumpted arrowhead on his helmet, likely a leftover from last Friday night’s game. It was no longer on Vrabel’s helmet in the locker room after practice. Haley has said when players make the team, they arrowheads will go back on their helmets.

- Only two players were in No Man’s Land of injury rehab: ILB Zach Thomas and RB Kolby Smith. Returning to practice were QB Tyler Thigpen and G Tavares Washington.  Rookie G Colin Brown was late arriving for the morning session, but did take part.

- When the No. 1 defense went out, first-round draft choice Tyson Jackson lined up at LDE, instead of Alfonso Boone. It’s the first time since he signed his contract and reported to camp that Jackson has lined up with the base defense.

- Jackson also has duties during practice, and that’s delivering a cup of Gatorade to the head coach during one of the breaks in the workout. Did not look like he spilled a drop on Monday.

- Still working at RT with the No. 1 offense was Barry Richardson. At WR, Terrance Copper and Devard Darling were still running with the first team.

- Here’s how the No. 2 line was arranged from left to right: Herb Taylor, Darryl Harris, Wade Smith, Tavares Washington and Damion McIntosh.

- In their situation period, the Chiefs worked on a quick kick out of a FG formation. K Ryan Succop did a nice job, as one of  his punts rolled to the goal line and the other went out of bounds around the eight-yard line.

- Leggett had an interception of QB Matt Gutierrez on a tipped ball.

- Vrabel continues to be very vocal. On a 3rd-and-7 play, Darling moved before the snap and Vrabel let him here it. “Careful Devard, that’s a 3rd-and-7 to a 3rd-and-12,” Vrabel said.

- Working as punt returners were CB Maurice Leggett, RB Dantrell Savage and WR Rodney Wright.

Herm Edwards #6 pick OT Barry Richardson 1st team at RT, #5 & choice OT Colin Brown 3rd/4th team OG; so much for ‘better drafting’ in 2009. Right. ‘check’

The KC Star also reports said about KC’s best LB by some folks account, Derrick Johnson: “needs to get it going a little bit, I’d say.”

Bowe still second team; if iron sharpens iron then ‘check’ can use his head as an anvil for Dwayne’s angst…

‘Q’ no longer on PRs (and that’s the only place he’ll make the team, if he’s not even in on KRs. Speed & quickness alone is not enough…I’m sure he looks attractive to KC coaches because he so much on a team that has so little but for every nice play he might make, he’ll give it and then some back based on the evidence to date…

or these are your 2009 Kansas City Chiefs…enjoy.

nice report Mr. Gretz! Thank you!

slight correction: “speading missle” should be spelled “speeding missile”

I have to agree with Rin. The new KC management is certainly not coming up smelling like roses so far.

  • August 24, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

Larry, don’t listen to Rin. He is simply a contrarian whose opinion depends on the present company. Fact is, Rin is the same person who said 3 years wasn’t enough time to judge Herm (because Herm was unpopular at the time) and then tries to judge Haley & Co. on 3 WEEKS (b/c there is currently optimism for most fans for the new regime).

  • August 24, 2009  - Nick L. says:

I like the fact that when there is a glaring need for an upgrade management has made some moves personnel wise. My guess is well see some arrowheads soon, Mays is my first candidate and they should announce him as defensive captain at the same time, hes hungry and it shows in his performance.

  • August 24, 2009  - jimbo says:

Sounds like another practice of controlled chaos. There is much work to do. There probably is’nt enough practice time in the next three weeks for any significant improvement.
Good to hear we have acquired a couple of experienced o-linemen. Hopefully Miami’s second or third string lineman are better than our first string. It would be great if they can pass Haley’s conditioning test today & get into the trenches right away. To have passed their physicals already, simply means they flew in last night & contracts signed prior to the media finding out.
It is also refreshing to pick up some new players from the other side of the Pioli family.

  • August 24, 2009  - VLTC says:

I agree Jimbo, these trades (including the Cassel/Vrabel trade) are very refreshing and reminiscent of how Vermeil completely rebuilt his team so quickly (compared to 3 years of Herm throwing crud against the wall and waiting around to see what stuck).

Building a team takes 4 primary phases: Drafting, Trading, Free-Agency, and development.

Winning a game takes a 5th component: Coaching

The balanced approach of the current management is a breath of fresh air.

Ndukwe can play right tackle, unlike his compition at the Chiefs camp. Like that fact that they are still working on the roster. Lets keep in mind that they were left with very little to work with.

  • August 24, 2009  - Josh says:

I think what Rin is trying to do (in his own convuluted and twisted way) is show those of us who were anti-Herm last year what it was like for those who actually were able to see improvement and good under the lame-duck Edwards administration. When he cheers on the other team, its his way of “paying those back” who at one point or another said things like “I hope the Chiefs lose the rest of their games so Herm gets fired.” I don’t seriously believe that Rin hates the new regime, the man is too passionate about football and the Chiefs specifically, I think instead that he is just trying to feed everyone their “just desserts” and show them how he felt the majority of the season last year.

Granted, now that I’ve brought that up, he’s likely to not admit to it and call me a knave or simpleton or make some comment about inbreeding in my family. Haha.

Hey Rin, we get it. Sorry for making your life Hell.

  • August 24, 2009  - Rin Tin Tin says:

Am I the only one that’s dying for Bob to post the source IP addresses of each comment so we can see how many of these non-Rin posts are actually Rin conversing with himself?

Obviously, there are ways to disguise this but I’d be surprised if Rin was savvy enough to figure it out.

Although, since he still lives in his parent’s basement, he obviously has plenty of time to research it.

Are you really bragging about Richardson? Did you watch the game Friday? The only reason I can see for your love affair w/ B Rich, is when he lets a DE blow by him and get to the QB, you somehow blame Cassle for taking a sack. Go back to writing song parodies and digging up you tube clips.

Anybody know what or who we traded to Miami?

  • August 24, 2009  - Niblick says:

It was an undisclosed 2010 draft pick. I ‘m guessing it was a 5th or 6th round pick.

“Oh, I have clipped the surly wings of Chiefsdom

Out of reach I’ve climbed & watched from on high the bumbling mass win-less humanity they…

Hov’ring there I’ve deftly eluded the shouting winds their angst, and flung this Pied Piper’s eager craft His wordsmith through unconvincing replies nee vacuity their hot air.

Up up the long unreachable majesty mine hue Rin’s topped these blogdom heights an easy grace, where ne’er Josh, none other nor e’en blog author flew.

And, while with facile yet fertile peerless mind mine Rin’s trod the high untrespassed sanctity a blog space – put out His hand… and slapped the face mi gente.”

  • August 24, 2009  - steve says:

A guess is that the draft pick will depend on playing time, and even if the player makes the team. Considering the condition of our line, they will make the team, and see lots of time. This is not a slam on g.m. or coach, but what they inherited, you can only do so much in a season.

  • August 24, 2009  - Nick_chiefs says:

I’m pleased to see they are still working on the roster and tweaking it to get as much out of it as possible. Picking up Vrabel was such a huge step forward for the defense in my opinion.

  • August 24, 2009  - Josh says:

Haha…a backhanded compliment from Rin, I’ll take it.

  • August 24, 2009  - Will says:

I like the move to upgrade the offensive line. Instead of looking at the offensive line and hoping it could be “coached up,” Pioli makes a move to bring in more talent. Hopefully the two ex-Dolphins are an upgrade, but more importantly, I like the move. It clearly demonstrates to the rest of the team that they need to continually improve.

  • August 24, 2009  - Josh says:

“- In their situation period, the Chiefs worked on a quick kick out of a FG formation. K Ryan Succop did a nice job, as one of his punts rolled to the goal line and the other went out of bounds around the eight-yard line.”

Hey Gretz! Why would you put something like this out?!

Stupid reporting like this is the reason the “press” is kept three football fields away. Looks like that may not be far enough! At least as far as EX employees go.

I call Fraud on you Gretz!

  • August 24, 2009  - Uncuffed says:

That seems a little harsh, Josh. Now, if this was game-week during the season, then I’d complain.

  • August 24, 2009  - Scott says:

Succop can punt, too. You think our opponenets won’t know this?

    Relax. It’s not Top Secret.

  • August 24, 2009  - Scott says:

On second thought…I really like it. Why NOT put that out there? Let the opponent be wondering every time Succop lines up for a field goal. Will he actually try the attempt? Or will he “pooch” it down to the goal line? Keep ‘em guessing.

  • August 24, 2009  - Jim Lloyd+ says:

Washington, Baltimore, Miami, Kansas City, what other team? 4 teams, and he could still beat out Richardson. That isn’t even the point, the fact that the team has identified a weak spot and is working on it, it is encouraging. Well to most of us, some used too much stickum in the 60’s and 70’s, fumes have fogged thier memory.

The new guys may help or not. I hope the price was not to high in draft picks. That said football is football, Herm to Haley. Just how bad was herm? His imcompetence must have been on epic proportions (CB iding skills not withstanding). Head coach for 3 years and rebuilding for two and this team has nothing but missing pieces, guys on the roster who are not NFL grade pros, just guys. Sort of sad for the team, city, and fans.

And the call the failed hand-picked “any 22s” nee Pioli-ites continues to swell…

Of the 80 men still on the roster, more than half of them are STILL Herm’s Chiefs fromst 2008. Come the next two cuts the “any 22’s” will be thinned from the herd to an e’en greater extent. 2009 as last season, this team is/will be Herm’s – every ‘W’ into his column, e’ery ‘L’ same courtesy the mismanagement a & on the field via the former/off via personnel faux pas the latter.

Spot on move by Pioli/Haley trading for these young offensive linemen. It’s weird, I was just thinking this morning about which teams KC could look to for offensive linemen-a team with really good depth, and the one I though of was Miami.

Both these guys are young and powerful. I remember when the Saints let go of Alleman. About 15 teams were after him, and Miami got him off waivers with the first claim.

I agree with the previous poster who liked the way this crew doesn’t just sit there when there is a need-sometimes just coaching up players and hoping won’t do it. All the OL has to step up, or they will bring in someone to take their jobs.

    “So Rin”

    - yes Polly?

“for pioli to have his team, he and haley would have to get rid of what percentage of herm players?”

    - as it stands with today’s 2 new additions and 2 players released, there be 41 Herm’s men left and 39 newbies nee “any 22’s will do’s” the 80 total.

Of course, the majority those 39 & are training camp fodder – flotsam & jetsam – any 22’s. So if ’search’ & ‘check’ are correct their any 22 tap dance (hint: they’re not) then they’d need 27 those 39 make the final 53 (heh heh heh, right, ‘check’.) Too only 26 of the remaining 41 Herm’s men on the team could stay, otherwise, it is Herm’s team. You do the math – w/condolences, Rin will leave the lights on for you.

“Herm’s players, the ones you seem to love…how many pro bowlers? how many?”

    - Brian Waters & Larry Johnson come to mind, Tony Gonzalez before & traded him (nice – another smooth move boys – if you were going to stock a team of relics in Engram, Thomas, Vrabel, Goff, Toomer, Brown, etc., Tony would’ve had some company, only, he wouldn’t have tolerated ‘check’ & ’seacrh’ nonsense/might’ve retired rather than suffer the duex imbéciles.

“how many wins? 6 in two years.”
