ASK BOB – ABOUT THE SITE

OK, some of you have asked for it and we’ve promised it, so let’s open he floodgates for another session of ASK BOB.  This time the subject is the website, bobgretz.com.

For all those who have questions about the site, suggestions, complaints, kudos and the like, we’d appreciate your comments. If you want to vent, rant or praise, we’ll take those too. If there are other things you want to see, or things we provide that you don’t want to see, this your opporunity. If it’s about bobgretz.com or just Bob Gretz, we’ll read all and we will comment.

Let me also make sure everyone understands that bobgretz.com is a dictatorship, although a benevolent one. Comments will close at midnight Saturday evening.

Post away!

BOB, how about you putting pics up? Like this years trip to the Super Bowl, or our training camps, conferences, players, whatever and wherever you are that has to do with our Chiefs. I would really love more pod-casts, maybe after games or like last year with goose, ect.or video clips with you and the person your interviewing. But I know that would mean you would have to have a camera and person video taping, ect, but just a thought. Maybe try and post your comments to our posts more often, interact as much as possible, eventhough you probably already do. I would spice up your web page too.

That being said, I like that your info is always true, you may not be the first one with the news, but when you post it, you know its true. I love the site, I know that we may beat you up about your site, but THIS site is the ONLY site I view daily, so you must be doing somthing right!!

    GREAT JOB!!

Keep up the great work BG, I, and im sure we, all appreciate it!!

Outstanding site, Bob. My absolute top source for all things Chiefs. Great job with analysis, numbers, etc.. As a long- suffering Chiefs fan, I say many thanks and I know things will get better soon for our favorite team.

    Go Chiefs!

    Bob

There was a time when I checked the Chiefs web site several times a day. I was always pleased to see an article from either you or Rufus Dawes (Spelling?) Now I just check this site and Arrowhead Pride Daily for my Chiefs fix. Thanks for all your work. Looking forward to your insights as the offseason leads toward training camp of this critical year.

BOB; I would be interested in hearing more about “comings and goings” of the team. In other words “who’s coming onto the team and who is being booted off the team”. Also would love to know a little more about the star players. What they do in their spare time and what its like to be a NFL star. Thanks ChuckP

  • February 18, 2010  - Ron says:

Thanks for every thing you do!
Do not think you can do this by yourself. How much help do you have? I read you every day. Don’t know how you could make it much better. I wonder about your family history, and a little bit about them. Where did you start your journey and how did you get to this great site? Much Thanks!

  • February 18, 2010  - vincent says:

    Bob,
I love your insight and intelligence. I am a particular fan of the draft. How about looking at more of the unknown players, sleepers as you will, that will be picked from round 4-PFA?
The reason is obvious. Every Tom, Dick and Harry have mock drafts and analysis of the top 64 ish picks. The later rounds are the depth builders-over 1/2 of all players are picked 4th or in free agency.
The second idea is whether you have a clear picture of what type of player defines a Chief?
For example, you can tell the kind of OL Pittsburg likes-big, powerful-WR who can catch and block, RBs through the tackle etc. Are the Chiefs trying to be the Steelers, the Cardinals , the Patriots or a unique hybrid? I hope with the new coaches along with Pioli will coalesce to create a team with a unique identity. If you have any idea of what Pioli/Haley are creating, it would be most enlighening.

I agree with Gorilla. This is the only site I check on a daily basis. It’s far and away the best site for all things Chiefs and most things football. Your historical perspective and football knowledge provide better in depth analysis than any of your competition. My hope is that you can continue the site for a long time. How many individuals do you have on staff and what do you think the prospects are for the future of the site? I would also enjoy more of the where are they now segments about former Chiefs and your behind the scenes information and anecdotes about former players and other members of the organization. Thanks and keep up the great work Bob!

  • February 18, 2010  - Dustin says:

Great Site Bob! Been listening to you since the mid 90’s. What do you think the Chiefs will do at 5? I’m convinced it will be Eric Berry, Dan Williams, Rolando Mcclain. I’m a big fan of Russell Okung and i know that alot of people dont think he is elite and is not worth the pick. Albert played really well the last 5 weeks of the season and i think he will make a fine LT. I was kind of upset at Haley for making Albert lose weight. I know the team as a whole needed to lose weight and played better because of it. I had to adjust to a lighter weight at the Semi Pro level and i know how hard that is to make that transition. If Albert hadn’t made that transition then Okung would be my pick. However if Clausen takes a tumble then Berry will probally be gone. That leaves Williams, Okung, Mcclain. I would love to hear your thoughts in the direction my beloved Chiefs will go!

    Thanks Bob. GO CHIEFS!!

Bob ……A little love ….your site is the frist thing in the morning…..well after the bathroom of course. Then the KC Star/ESPN/NFL/KCChiefs not much of a life huh.As a lifelong Chiefs fan it all starts with your site, even though my faith has faded in my chiefs. God I hope we have a better draft in 10.

  • February 18, 2010  - PnS says:

    Make that first thing

  • February 18, 2010  - Mad Chief says:

Bob, first of all…this is a great site. Sincere thanks. Got lots of questions…I’ll try to limit them.

-What does Bob Gretz “officially” do for a living these days? (I have a feeling that running this place here doesn’t pay all that well.)

-Who is Enrique Siu? The guy does a damn good job…and I’d like to see him write more here. No offense intended, Bob.

-A lot of times (and even in this article), you refer to bobgretz.com as “we”. Who all exactly is “we”?

-Have you considered a “log in” system for the site, and the comment section? That would probably attract more “regulars”, like myself. Also, have you ever considered letting some of us write something for the site? Other than the comments, of course.

-I know you caught some crap for it, and not everyone enjoyed it…but I miss the Bottom of the Bird Cage. Any chance of a return?

-You know Jason Whitlock personally, I’m guessing. Is he as big of a **** as most people think? Or is he just doing what he’s good at, which is stirring “the pot”? (Okay…I really don’t expect you to answer that one.)

-Who was that clown Rin Tin Tin that used to hang out here? A lot of people (at the time) thought it was Bob himself. Any truth to that?

I rambled a bit. My apologies. Once again, great site. We “Chiefs junkies” appreciate the effort immensely. And the “Ask Bob” things have been really cool. You should do them on a regular basis…like once a week, or month.

  • February 19, 2010  - MenInRed says:

    Bob,
    First and foremost, GREAT JOB!

I sure miss your articles on Chiefs.com (“their error”) as well as your voice back in the day on KCFX during game day (another “their error”).

I know this site is to your expense and trips to ArrowHead/TrainingCamp/SuperBowl etc… comes out of your pocket now, so my question is this:
Are you writing for any other sports media or outlet to help supplement these expenses?
If so do you use a PSEUDONYM?
If not how can you afford to keep this up and for how long?
I would hate to see you go to another city and cover another team, please don’t.

  • February 19, 2010  - KC_Guy says:

    Bob,

first of all thanks for the site and also BIG thanks for the responses to my mails.

I’m not sure whether a lot of pics, videos etc. as suggested would make this site better. Fancier? For sure – but that type of stuff is all over the web. I appreciate the straightforward, informative style of this site providing a different view of things we may have read in other places as well.

    Things I’d like to see:

    - Guest commentary prior to game days, probably someone from the opponent’s area press corps.
    - Guest commentary by knowledgable outsiders: Poznanski (Ex-KC Star), Peterson, Vermeil …
    - Guest commentary by former (retired) players: Shields, Holmes, Green, Dunn, Gannon, Roaf, … What do they do now? Their thoughts about the “new” Chiefs?
    - Your thoughts on Chiefs’ press conferences/releases. Pick them apart. Read between the lines. (I know you do that already … dig even deeper!)
    - Commentary/information on issues not necessarily directly related to the Chiefs: Work progress @ St. Joseph, CBA negotiations, KC subsidies to Arrowhead, …

I look forward to reading both what you have to say and all the self controled remark’s from other readers …
    Class at a high level . Thank’s

I’ve followed your columns from when I lived in KC until now in DC. You’re the most reliable connection to what’s going on in and around the Chiefs. Thank you for years of quality informative, mostly unbiased reported. You haven’t mentioned funding recently, but I’m still standing by to subscribe if it would help maintain the site. Thank you for all of your time and effort.

  • February 19, 2010  - Nathan says:

    Bob:
I have enjoyed your site since its inception. Please continue to write and post as much about the Chiefs as possible.
I enjoyed the podcast interviews that you did in the past. Please continue that if possible.
Please check with your ISP/site host to find out if there is anything they can do to speed things up or at least improve reliability. I occasionally have trouble connecting to the site.
Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing your insights.

  • February 19, 2010  - ThunderChief says:

I’ll add to the growing chorus and laud Bob’s efforts in making this the best Chief’s related web site by far. I’ll also open the door to asking about an expansion of sorts, making a separate premium site with annual fees allowing for such things as audio/video podcasts, interactive communication and even more in-depth content.

Is that in the cards somewhere down the line? If so, sign me up today.

  • February 19, 2010  - Morten, Denmark says:

Bob; your site is the only site that I just have to visit daily… Thx for your great work.

I think its really great that you have started making podcasts again; great if you could do some of those during season.

Video podcasts could be a great addition to the site!

Also; I believe others have suggested the same thing… If you, in season, could create a panel of guys with real in depth-knowledge, to analyse the games played and the ones coming up… Could run once a week and would be really interesting…

Once again; thanks for a super site!

  • February 19, 2010  - brad says:

Bob, let me join the chorus singing your praises. You really have put together a class website. I hope the advertizers are reading all of these positive comments.

I think the idea mentioned above about guest commentary – ideally a former Chief who is still in touch with the goings on – would be a great idea.

  • February 19, 2010  - Fansince93 says:

If you weren’t the Kansas City delegate for the NFL Hall of Fame would you still stay in KC and cover the Chiefs?

Which former Chiefs coach are you the closest with or most fond of?

Which former Chiefs player are you the closest with or most fond of?

I’m with everyone else, this is the first and primary site I check for Chiefs info. I’ve visited daily since you launched this summer of 2008 (right?)

  • February 19, 2010  - SG says:

Bob, have you banished anyone since the time you posted warnings to the site a few months ago? It seems a lot quieter around in here in certain ways.

Also, where’s my long-lost Chiefs peeps at? Holla GOEZ out to D-DAWG, Jorge, and anyone else who deserves it!

  • February 19, 2010  - TimR says:

Bob, This a great site…one I check daily. You do all of the Chiefs fans a service with this site & you’re take on things.

A couple of things I’d like to see discussed:

    1. More about how the OL seemed to change schematically from Herm Edwards & more insight into why people are now questioning Albert. He was fantastic his rookie year with virtually no training camp! Then came the new regime & a requirement by them to drastically change his body. What kinds of physical characteristics are we now looking for at the different OL positions based on the scheme they’ve now implemented.

    2. The “pop ups” get a little annoying though…

  • February 19, 2010  - Gary in IL says:

Bob Great site read it every morning. Any chance you can combine and do some work with Goose or post his stuff or links to it. You and Goose do a great job keep up the good work.

  • February 19, 2010  - gorillafan says:

    SG,

think one factor on the posting numbers is the down time, off season, I can see it picking up closer to the draft and training camp.

    timR,

pop-up means money for Bob and this site, so I dont care!!

Bob, I also thought maybe you could have a page where your viewers can post their own picks from games, tailgating est, just another thought

  • February 19, 2010  - K See Fan says:

Would love to hear about the combine stuff and your outlook on the Chiefs. Everybody in the media says the same thing, I like to hear what you think. Last 2 or 3 months I haven’t looked near as much to this, but during the season and training camp, this was the site I checked first. I want to see your mock for KC and who you feel oculd help us.

  • February 19, 2010  - Doug Bentrop says:

Bob really enjoy your sight. I know you used to catch hell about being Carl’s guy, I think most of us know they were just jealous. What I would like to see is a “Where are they now” segment on ex Chiefs, ones like Bert Coan, Stephone Paige, Gary Green or any Chief for that manner. What is their life like now. I think it would be very interesting.

  • February 19, 2010  - Randy says:

Great site, I particularly like the way you take the time to throw in columns on Chiefs history. Miss hearing you on the radio.

  • February 20, 2010  - Chris says:

    Hey bob

I know it’s been mentioned a couple of times, but podcasts would be sweet, not to mention a potential solution to how to profit from the site. Advertisements on podcasts can generate decent funds, especially if you can get a decent following (which you have). That said, if ads pop up in podcasts, I want a job after I graduate with my journalism degree nest spring. A cushy job, with a view. Thanks.

Anyway, about the site, I would like to see podcasts. Also, pictures of the cheerleaders, and above all, the kind of coverage you provided last training camp with the constant updates literally no one else (sadly) was providing for chiefs camp. That will probably change with camp moving, but anything similar, meaning, anything you can provide that no one else can is always cool. Insight, rumors, predictions, etc. Gossip, I guess. I want Chiefs gossip. and podcasts.

  • February 20, 2010  - Chris says:

    speaking, of gossip…

What happened to Rin Tin Tin? I thought I hated him, but later realized I LOVED to hate him. Like wrestling.

I miss him. Rin tin tin, not wrestling – just to be .

  • February 20, 2010  - Mike in MO says:

Great site, Bob. I appreciate the depth of your analysis of anything impacting the Chiefs.

If there is anything like a slow day in your business, I’d love to hear the story of how in the world we drafted Trezell Jenkins as our top pick when other teams had him rated about a seventh-round choice. I don’t think the story’s ever been told.

  • February 20, 2010  - Carl says:

Wow Bob as a very recent viewer to your site I must tell you, I love it. As a fan since 1965 (the year I was born, my dad wouldn’t have it any other way)I crave all things Chiefs. I have lived on the East Coast (PA, DE) since 1978 and my family and I live and breath all that is KC.

I found your site via arrowhead pride and must tell you that I’m so glad I did. You were my favorite contributor to the Chiefs site and now I don’t have to filter through any other writers to find the best anymore.

Thanks for all your hard work and your commitment to excellence. The only suggestion I have is, for us folks that don’t live anywhere near the greater KC area, the more information you can put on the site about our beloved Chiefs the better.

    Thanks!!

  • February 20, 2010  - Anon says:

If you’re pop-up ads get as aggressive as porn sites, I’ll not be frequenting it as much.

  • February 21, 2010  - Ron says:

How about more “ASK BOB” during the year? This is a great site!!!

  • February 21, 2010  - Donovan Leighton says:

Great job with the site! I have nothing to add, just don’t get yourself burnt out!

  • February 21, 2010  - David Henderson says:

Thanks for the great website Bob, I also read it daily because it seems to have the most concise and relevant news about the Chiefs daily. Keep it up and what do you think the Chiefs biggest off-season move will be?
