Chiefs Arrive In River Falls

From River Falls, Wisconsin

The parade of four buses pulled onto the campus of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls just before 5 p.m. Thursday, as the Chiefs rolled into town for their 19th and supposedly last training camp here in the northwoods.

The players quietly strolled off the buses and into the George R. Field South Fork Suites dorm, their home away from home for the next three weeks.

One guy who was thrilled to be in the land of beer and cheese was head coach Todd Haley.

“I’m really, really excited,” said Haley, who may have been the only member of the traveling party that arrived in suit. “I’m really going to have to temper myself, just knowing me, to try and stay calm, knowing we can’t get it done in a day.

“I’m just really fired up. It’s an exciting time for me in my life.”

Haley was happy even before he left Kansas City because of the work that was done by his players during their vacation period.

“Last week we had 26 to 30-something guys in there working out on their own,” Haley said. “This week when I’ve been working out, I’ve seen them in there. They are getting on the scale, they are working together. It’s very positive feeling from the guys.”

Especially quarterback Matt Cassel.

“He was in this week running a bunch of guys through routes on his own,” said Haley. “I looked out the window and there he was; he was directing traffic. I think he’s done everything he can do to this point to give him a chance to succeed.”

The only player missing on the trip was DE Tyson Jackson as negotiations continued with the No. 1 draft choice. The team announced earlier in the day that fourth-round CB Donald Washington had signed his contract, leaving Jackson as the only draft choice still unsigned.

“I’m just going to worry about the guys that are here,” Haley said of Jackson. “It’s football season, so we are looking for football players.”

Among those players getting off the bus were LG Brian Waters and OLB Mike Vrabel, seen only during the team’s mandatory mini-camp back in early June.

The players will go through a conditioning test Friday morning and then meetings Friday afternoon and evening. The first practice is set for Saturday morning, another one on Saturday afternoon.

Good to hear that Waters got off the bus. But, will he pass Haley’s test…? I mean, I know the coach has thrown down the gauntlet on this one, but this is a guy we really need on that OL. Oh well, just glad he is in River Falls.

I read on PFT that the guarnteed money for Jason Smith was about 33MM. I guess Jackson would get in the range of 25MM-30MM guarnteed. That could be more than Cassel’s 28MM. These rookie contracts are out of sight. It will be interesting if in the new CBA if there isome type of rookie contract guidelines like the NBA

Todd Haley was not the only one wearing a suit. Scott Pioli was also wearing one.

Bob, do you thinbk there’s a chance the Chiefs will remain in River Falls for camp and not re-locate to St. Joe?

I don’t know about you guys but I’m ready for some football. The best part is it counts from here on. Thanks Bob and keep the updates coming. Hopefully we’ll get Jackson signed and in camp soon. We don’t want a long holdout and he needs to be in camp learning the defense and getting ready for the season.

Sounds like all is well, to me.

I expect Jackson to be signed and in camp very soon. I hope so, anyway. He can’t afford to get behind.

Time to get to work. For REAL. Time is short. Football season is right around the corner. And we’ll see if progress has been made…

Are you ready for some football?

    Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BRING IT ON!!!

The year before last the Ravens —mainley Ray Lewis hammered KC —I think the Chiefs only had 3-4 first down’s the whole game! He’s starting to slow down, but this is going to be a big suprise to some him and others.
I think KC can shake this Div. apart and roll over some of these teams in the first half of the season.
If you live on stat’s and past result’s , take care on betting on some of these team’s that are not alive with the same talent they thrived with last year.
The KC Chiefs have a lot of speed and are going to control these games a LOT better than they did in the past couple year’s.
This being in shape and when all these guy’s turn the coner with this level of coaching, watch out!
Remenber some of last year’s first half’s when they ran up a lot of point’s—–then ran out of gas half way thru the third quarter.
    Very likley —-Worst To First.
