Countdown For DT & Canton

From River Falls, Wisconsin

It’s now a week until induction day for Derrick Thomas at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

There are some tidbits we can tell you about the ceremonies in Canton, Ohio next Saturday night

Thomas will be the fifth of the six inductees to be honored on stage at Fawcett Stadium. The entire order remains unknown, but DT’s moment will come near the end of the ceremonies.

He will be presented by former Chiefs president-general manager Carl Peterson. There will then be a video presentation on Derrick created by the NFL Network. Finally, his son Derrion will step forward and accept the Hall of Fame bust for the Thomas family.

Just about every coach Thomas had during his 11 seasons with the Chiefs will attend.

That includes Marty Schottenheimer, Kurt Schottenheimer, Dave Adolph, Woody Lowe and yes, Gunther Cunningham. Only those who know Gunther know how remarkable it is that he’s leaving the Detroit Lions training camp to attend the induction in Canton.

Right now the only man who coached Derrick who hasn’t committed is Bill Cowher and he’s trying to change his schedule so he can make an appearance there.

Board members and children from the Third & Long Foundation will be in Canton, as well as several students from the Derrick Thomas Academy.

One more note: the Hall of Fame issues merchandise each year that features the incoming members of the Hall. Among the class of 2009, the Derrick Thomas merchandise is outselling the other five. In fact, the Hall has sold more DT stuff than the other five (Rod Woodson, Bruce Smith, Bob Hayes, Randall McDaniel and Ralph Wilson) combined.

We’ll have more in the days ahead about Hall of Fame weekend and starting Friday we’ll be in Canton for all the festivities, including the opening of the Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery at the Hall of Fame. That goes down at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

It will be quite a weekend for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Is the induction going to be televised on any channel?
It would bring me chills to watch it. Everytime I think about DT & the upcoming HOF event, I vision his smile & pure passion for football. Seriously, all the people that new him personally & professionally say the same thing, “he simply loved the game”. His passion & enthusiasm was contagious in the locker room & the field. Like a little kid in the candy store, dashing here, dashing there, smiling, tongue licking the lips, wondering how much candy you can get for a quarter. We’re talking a Norman Rockwell moment.
All of KC & the world will remember him in their own way. All I can say is Thank You Derrick Thomas. Job Well Done…
