Sunday Night Injury Update

Sometime Monday afternoon we should get a clearer picture on the status of injuries suffered by QB Matt Cassel, CB Brandon Flowers and WR Devard Darling.

Coaches and players were unavailable to the media on Sunday as they begin a very short week in preparation of Thursdsay’s pre-season finale in St. Louis. The team will practice Monday morning; afterwards Todd Haley will speak to the media. Details will  more than likely remain scarce.

Yahoo.com reported Sunday evening that Cassell could miss two to four weeks with a strained medial collateral ligament. However, the web report said it was Cassel’s right knee, when the injury was to his left leg. The information came supposedly from “a source within the Chiefs organization.” The injury is not expected to require surgery.

Various media outlets reported other details about Cassel and Darling’s injuries without providing attribution. If you want that information then we’ll let you do the search. Both players suffered injuries to their left legs in Saturday night’s game against Seattle. There’s been no speculation on Flowers’ left shoulder that he injured in the first quarter.

im ok if someone cant cut it, I just hate when its an injury keeping someone out…

what a dark cloud over the start of the season.

    What I heard…

Cassel out two to four weeks. It’ll be interesting to see who gets the starting nod while he’s out, if true. My guess would be Croyle.

Darling is done for the season…if the reports are true. Sucks for him. But I don’t see it affecting the team too much one way or another.

    - KC Chiefs – Joe Bfstplk of the NFL…

    The good news is, however…

Rin will have to reconsider his 0-16 prediction if/whence Brodie Croyle is the starting QB; for how many games no one as of yet knows.

If Brodie were in for an entire season 4 more W’s than the 0 expected with Ca$4el… as it may only be briefly, it may not make any difference – BUT -

Game 2 now looks win-able with BC in; KC would not win until December if they lose this game.

Brodie leads KC to a 1-1 record through 2 games; then Mutt returns and (shy another injury) takes the team to 0-14 thereafter.

Brodie, as much as I like him, has never led KC to anything other than a loss….

My vote is for Brodie… He has almost every tool for a QB over Thigpen, except mobility and durability. So what if he gets hurt at this point. Give him a chance and see what happens.

Let Cassel rest until the Home Opener against the Raiders. I’m all for mailing in the first game against the Ravens. Let’s use it to get better, but there is no reason to get aggressive with hurring up Cassel to get him in that game.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I think that the Chiefs need to at least CONSIDER being a run-first team. Charles and LJ are a good tandem, two very different and talented runners. The line seems to do a a little better with run blocking (which, of course, isn’t saying much).

Croyle is a decent stopgap, but has never stayed healthy. Thigpen looked terrible Saturday. BEing a pass first team isn’t looking like much of an option.

On a side note, I’m sorry for Darling that he’s hurt, but I think that Toomer, Bradley and Lelie are better players (in actual games, if not in practice), and will do more for the team with him out.

Anyways, watching Saturday night made me think that the only way that we’re going to do anything this year is to get that running game going. We looked WAY more effective in the first quarter running the ball than we ever did passing it the rest of the game.

Cassel looked god against Minnesota. We’ll see what he can do when he gets back. In the meantime, the running game is pur only hope.

    Thoughts?

I been saying that all preseason. This team will be a running team. We have a much better collection of talent in the backfield then when do at the wideout position.

Also hard to believe any info getting out about Cassell with this team being so tight lipped. So i’ll wait till it comes from the horses mouth before I believe any reports about Cassell. As for who will start if Cassell is out week 1. NO doubt Brodie Croyle. He’s had a great camp and has chemistry with some of the guys here like Dbowe. Can he stay healthy who knows? But he took a shot against the Vikings and got back up. So stay tuned.

    - PK Nick Lowery failed constantly (with 8 teams until he finally made it in Kansas City); Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Tom Landry epitomized ‘loser’ – nothing but losing seasons, until his 7th year; QB Len Dawson sat on a bench – for half a decade; Death Valley’s 49’s persevered; before he became President Abraham Lincoln failed in business, he suffered a nervous breakdown, went bankrupt, and his fiancee died, he lost his job & too several political races.

Brodie for President – Croyle for starting QB Kansas City Chiefs!

I hope Darling being out doesn’t cause the bum Engram to make the team. Darling’s loss wil hurt. He’s had a great camp, and was going to start opposite Bowe. He’s also a good special teams player. Now I hope Lelie or Bradely is the #2, Toomer is the 3rd down slot guy, and Lawrence is the #5, with Copper or a waiver pickup as #6.
Thigpen will be the starter until Cassel is back. I cannot believe the over reaction to one bad EXHIBITION game. There are a dozen REAL games that show we can be a somewhat effective offense with Thigpen at QB, in an unconventional offense, and that’s what we need to do until Cassel comes back. And even then, the shotgun and spread should be our normal offense, as the interior of this O Line cannt stop a DT’s first step. We can’t have a QB take a direct snap from Center, so why even try, since both Cassel and Thigpen are better in the shotgun. Unless someone coughs up that #4, we need to keep Thigpen.

BTW, Flowers hurt his shoulder on his TD play, when he landed hard on it in the end zone. He tried to play the next series but was clearly tentative, and took himself out. I heard he suffered a stinger, and he’ll be fine.
Brodie is a better passer than Thigpen(and Cassel) but isnt the right QB for us with this OL as it’s currently constituted, as he’s not as effective in the shotgun, and isn’t as mobile or durable as the other 2. He’ll be a fine backup, here or elsewhere. Wouldn’t be shocked if he goes to NE for “future” considerations.

Brodie has outplayed Thigpen in the pre-season, in my opinion. Thigpen was awful on Saturday. You’re right, Mark…nobody should over react, but it has to be taken into consideration. If I’m Haley I start Brodie until Cassel comes back.

  • August 31, 2009  - kc mutt says:

I think the real consideration is with the Chiefs really bad OL, they may need to keep all 4 QBs, yes, all 4. None of the QB can survive with the line play in front of them.
