Thomas Jones Joins Chiefs

Veteran free agent RB Thomas Jones has agreed to a two-year contract with the Chiefs.

The news popped Tuesday afternoon, Day No. 5 of the free agency period. According to ESPN, Jones will get a two-year deal, worth $5 million and he’ll have the chance to improve those numbers with some incentives.

Jones will be 32 in August and is entering his 11th NFL season.  The Virginia native has played in 148 regular season games with Arizona, Tampa Bay, Chicago and the last three seasons with the New York Jets. Jones has 2,280 carreis for 9,217 yards and 62 TDS and 32 career 100-yard rushing games. Seven of those came last season when he had a career high 1,402 yards rushing on 331 carries and 14 TDs.

I’m excited to have another running back of this quality.
    Next is Lilja!

Pioli signed this guy 2 quiet the rumblings of the fans who wanted a game changer brought in here. We got Jones WOW…but the last time I checked he couldnt get on the field b/c he was getting out played by a rookie last year.(yawn) Wake me up when Pioli drafts Berry with the Fifth pick or he trades the pick for a player 2 be named later….hehe

Jones was relegated to a backup with the Jets, and he’ll be a backup here. Good backup, good signing. He wasn’t signed to “quiet” anything. He was signed to improve the team. Pioli doesn’t care what anyone outside his close circle thinks, and that’s the way it should be. Carl often (over)reacted to what fans thought, hence some of the horrible signings he made over the last few years.

I think this is a good signing & I wouldn’t stop there if Fargas is cheap, he would be a chief also. Our RB’s seem to have a hard time staying healthy.

  • March 9, 2010  - PnS says:

Well the health issue could because of our O-Line I’am just saying.

    Pns,
Agree, I like this signing and Fargas is more than welcome.

Its not a Huge signing by many, but Jones is EXACTLY what we need at that position, so to me it is a HUGE signing.

    well done

The only two guys in the NFL that had more rushing yards in 2009 were Chris Johnson and Steven Jackson. Jones had over 1400 yards and 14 TD’s last year. Not bad for a guy that “couldn’t get on the field”, I’d say.

This will give our running game a 1-2 punch that will rival just about any team in the league.

Not to mention, there were several teammates of Jones’ that were pissed when he got released…stating that he was a great locker-room presence, and a team leader.

I know there will be plenty of pissing and moaning from some. The same ones who do about every move (or non-move) the Chiefs make. But make no mistake, guys…our Offense just got a WHOLE lot better.

Nice signing; no reason to stop there. Fargas and Willie Parker are coming to visit also. Wouldn’t mind any or all of them.

The bad news: the Broncos are signing many of the defensive guys who might have helped KC-NT Jamaal Williams, DE-Jarvis Green, DE-NT Justin Banaan, CB Nathan Jones. None are saviors, but solid players. Williams could really be good if he can stay healthy.

There’s still some players out there, though; somebody get a memo to Pioli.

The Broncos may now be a place to watch to see if they let some guys go after these signings this year.

GREAT signing! I was scared Jr. may shut it down and not spend anything but TJ is a perfect fit for us right now at RB. He can help mentor Jamal and carry some of the load for us.
Thanks Scott! Makes my 2nd EZ pay a little easier.

Yea I hope everyone understands that the New York Jets O-line is about a thousand times better then the chiefs O-line is. They can actually block for a tough between the tackles kinda runner unlike the chiefs, thats why Charles was a better RB then Johnson!! I still would have liked to see Fargas here instead but it still a solid signing, still a long as he can stay healthy behind this O-line!

I would have to say also, i wouldn’t touch another lineman, defense or offense from the Chargers. they only let them go when they are way past there prime and I have heard that Jamaal williams’s knees are done for, so what’s the point..

I guess it’s a start. After last year’s draft class, I could have throw a dart and been better —

    Williams Bust
    Lawrence–Bust
    Washington–Bust
    Brown–Bust
    O’Connell–Bust
    Magee–near Bust

Good signing, actual attempt to fill a need that the draft probably would not have handled. Do not question the motives, just glad management made some kind of positive move.

    Mark,

Let’s give Crennel (and Pioli) the benefit of doubt…and see what he can do with the defensive players on hand. We had Krumrie (DL coach) and Pendergast last year. Not exactly top of the line coaching, imho.

Brown was injured almost all of last year. That doesn’t make him a “bust”. Maybe he is…and maybe he isn’t. But, let’s give the guy a fair chance when he’s healthy.

I think it’s a little early to consider any of these players a “bust”. Do we need more players? Of course. We’ll get them.

Pioli is taking a slow, methodical approach to building this team. Frustrating? Yeah…at times, it is. We all, as fans, want our team to be good. Right now. But, I just have the feeling that over the next few years, we’re going to see our team slowly build into a powerhouse.

Wow. I can’t believe it! A whole post by el cid…and not one negative thing to say. Well…more or less, anyway. I absolutely love it!

Just givin’ you sh*t, bro. Although we seldom agree (okay, have we EVER agreed?)…I always respect your opinions, because of the way you present them. I welcome a differing view when it’s presented with intelligence and a point…and you accomplish both at all times.

  • March 9, 2010  - Michael says:

It’s way too early to call a player drafted last year, or even two years ago, a bust. Plus, last year was a big transition year for the whole organization.

Mike Goff does not make all ex-Chargers linemen duds. Igor Olshanksy did ok for the Cowboys last year. I saw reports the Chargers wanted to keep Williams; they just didn’t want to pay what he wanted. Then again, I do think the Broncos overpaid for him because he is a big injury risk.

I have patience, but will still grumble at what looks questionable.

Jones in between the tackles, Charles outside the tackles….I think I like this tandem…I’m still not sold on what the Chiefs should do if both Berry and Okung (sp) are available….I don’t really think you can go wrong with either. Anyone else have any thoughts? Of course trade down is the #1 option..but that’s not likely. I would like to see someone compare Okung to other recent LT’s to come out, Joe Thomas, Jake Long etc etc. If it were truly me, I would probably go with Berry our Defense was atrocious. However if they do go OT they better go D and specifically ILB in the second round.

An excellent signing. If nothing else, Jones will be a fantastic mentor for Jamal Charles, but I think Jones still has some gas left in the tank. Ryan Lilja would be a great addition too, and maybe LB Ayodele or SS Gibril Wilson if they can be had on the cheap.

Speaking of cheap, I cannot believe how CHEAP we got Thomas Jones for!!! I know he’s 32, but I can’t fathom how he didn’t get at least 8 mil for 2 years.
