Draft Profile: Jason Fox

NAME – Jason Fox

Position – Offensive tackle.

College – Miami, FL.

Status – Senior, graduated with business management degree in Dec. ‘09.

Size/Weight – 6-6 7/8, 303 pounds.

Important numbers – 5.45 seconds in 40-yard dash, 23 reps on bench press. Rehab from knee surgery kept him from doing other drills.

Honors – First-team All-ACC in ‘09 … voted by his teammates co-MVP of the ‘09 team.

College career – As a true freshman, Fox was starting at the right tackle spot until injuries forced his move to the left side for the last four games of the season. That’s where he stayed over the next three years, handling the left tackle position for 39 games. Fox missed time throughout his career because of a dislocated left elbow, sprained ankle, right knee injury that required surgery and he was held out of a game in ‘09 with an irregular heartbeat.

Stats of note – 47 games/starts, the third most starts in Miami history. Fox spent eight of those games at right tackle, and the other 38 starting at left tackle.

STRENGTHS – Fox has quick and active hands that allow him to deal with defenders … does a good job blocking on the move, as he’s able to reach the second level under control … pretty solid in pass protection.

WEAKNESSES – He needs to get stronger, especially in the upper body … does not play with a nasty streak … his skills may not translate to left tackle in the NFL … has had trouble with pass rushers who have a second move … more athletic than big and dominating.

THE RIGHT 53? – Largely a tackle, there has been any indication that he could move inside to play guard, so there is little versatility. But coaches have to love his availability, starting 47 games over four seasons, missing only two when he decided to have knee surgery at the end of the ‘09 season.

What he said – “I’m getting a shot to play in the National Football League. At the end of the day, that’s all I can really ask for. I’m going to have to compete once I get there anyway so wherever I get taken, it’s a blessing and I’ll go from there. “

End game – His inability to do physical work at the NFL Combine, and then his hamstring pull at his Pro Day workout that cut short his participation, will hurt Fox’s draft stock. Yes, there are 47 games of tape to review where he was on the field, but some teams will be hesitant to grab him at any point ahead of the fourth-fifth-sixth rounds.

ON THE CHIEFS LIST? – Doubtful, given his lack of versatility. Should Fox still be available come the fifth or sixth round and he may receive consideration.

He may make a pretty good guard or something.

He will be a steal in the middle rounds. Played thru a lot of injuries.

He was recruited out of hs as a te so he is pretty athletic. Seems like he would be a steal with one of the 5th round picks.
