Draft Profile: Jordan Shipley

NAME – Jordan Shipley

Position – Wide receiver, also returner and holder.

College – Texas.

Status – Redshirt senior, graduated in Dec. ‘08 with degree in Kinesiology.

Size/Weight – 5-11¼, 193 pounds.

Important numbers – 4.6 seconds in 40-yard dash, 16 reps on bench press, 36.5-inch vertical jump, 9-feet 8-inch broad jump.

Age – 24.

Honors – All-America first-team selection ‘09 … unanimous All-Big 12 selection in ‘09 … second-team All-Big 12 pick in ‘08 … all-time leader for Texas in receptions.

College career – Shipley arrived in Austin for the ‘04 season as the most prolific receiver in Texas schoolboy history. But it was two years before he got on the field. He was a red-shirt as a freshman after surgery on his left knee, then he missed all 12 games in ‘05 due to the knee and a hamstring injury. It was the ‘07 season before Shipley started getting regular playing time. He received another season of eligibility with a medical red-shirt and in ‘08 and ‘09 had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.

Stats of note – 53 games/35 starts, 248 catches for 3,191 yards and 33 TD catches … 16 rushes for 162 yards … returned 30 punts for a 12.5-yard average with 3 TDs … returned 19 kickoffs for a 24.6-yard average and a TD … touched the ball a total of 313 times for 4,196 all-purpose yards, an average of 13.4 yards a touch and 79.2 yards per game.

STRENGTHS – His football IQ is very high, as he has played out of different receiver spots in his Texas career … outstanding route runner and very good with fakes … elusive runner, although he lacks great speed … willing blocker and contributor on special teams in all areas: holder, returner and coverage.

WEAKNESSES – Although it’s been several years since he missed game time because of injury, there are concerns about previous knee and shoulder problems … lacks prototypical size NFL teams seek at WR … does not compete for a lot of jump ball catches … he’ll turn 25 in December.

THE RIGHT 53? – Oh yes, this guy would be part of any coach’s right 53. He’s mature, intelligent, hard working, committed, versatile, personable and in recent seasons, available.

What he said – “That’s one of my favorite parts of football, doing kickoff return and punt return. I’ve loved it since I was a kid. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

End game – It’s unlikely that Shipley will ever be a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, but he’ll probably play for a decade as a contributor on offense and special teams. Think of another Big 12 receiver: Texas Tech’s Wes Welker.

ON THE CHIEFS LIST? – Absolutely, because he has the right pedigree, the right attitude and the right s kills. The third round would be the perfect spot to grab him.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Shipley ends up a Chief. I could have done without the obligitory Wes Welker comparison…but I forgive you, Bob.

Now I’m off to Google “Kinesiology”.

Saw this guy in some televised skills competition a few months ago.

I grew up as a football Cardinal fan in their St. Louis days. Shipley reminded me a lot of Pat Tilley. He wasn’t very fast but he always seemed to be open at important times.

I’d be happy to see this guy turn up in St. Joe this summer. He’s in the “Right 53″ somewhere in the NFL.

Just wondering?? What kind of offense does Haley/Weis run. Heard comment about there are two different kind of recievers out of college. Those who fit into the WestCoast style and those who do not. It is a question a size, speed, routes. Absolutely nothing about character.

I do not know if Shipley fits, “experts” said he is not a westcoast type. Not sure if he fits what KC runs. No matter how much you like the idea of adding him to the team. Sort of like wanting Suh or McCoy at NT, just does not fit what KC does on defense.

Sometimes you need the guy who fits your system rather than the guy you would love on your team.

Just quickly scanned five mock drafts and tell you guys, it is ugly out there. ALL picked a OT with first pick because of last years sacks, Albert should be a guard, and Cassel holds the ball to long. Almost forgot, Pioli….. he values positional players over best talent. They used Jackson as an example from last year. All said, this is not my idea of how to win in 2010. Maybe in 2014 but that does not tickly my fancy.

    El Cid,

As to the draft speculation, one could slightly paraphrase an old Bill Parcels lament to the media on one of his patented post-game (read, losses) rants when he said.

“You guys think you know but you just don’t know.”
That statement applies to all of us trying to dope out the draft and I’ll admit, it applies to me. I’m hoping for some solid value picks in 2010 by the Chiefs regardless of position.

I’m fearful of a few Pioli reaches but then again, who really knows until KC hands in the cards?

  • April 13, 2010  - el cid says:

Exactly, Pioli values positional players over best available. Can it work, absolutely. If you believe, clap your hand and tinkerbell will live. It is the time factor that worries me. I fear the Chiefs are building for the future, not the now. There needs to be a happy medium of present and future, right now Pioli does not get that message.

Jordan Shipley would be a star in Kansas city. Who couldn’t use a Dallas Clark Wes Welker Jordan Shipley. There I did it I compared him so sue me. I would be nuts if they drafted him in the third.

  • April 13, 2010  - Danny W says:

Here’s some news the Dolphins are shopping Ted Ginn Jr. He drops too many balls but would be a super return star.

  • April 13, 2010  - el cid says:

The Chiefs do not have anything but draft choices to give up for Ginn. I say forget it, not even a 2011 pick. I also think Ginn is done as in does not have 4 good years left.

Once again does Shipley fit into the KC offense?? Man love is just plain sick, I doubt Haley/Weis will change their view of the offense to just pick someone you like, Danny W? If he fit, ok by me, I know he can play just question whether it is in KC.

We need a good “slot” receiver. Is Shipley it? Hard to say. Could be…or maybe not. We need a good kick returner. Is Shipley it? Maybe…maybe not. Let’s face it…when you’re looking at guys from round #3 on down, it’s a gamble. A crapshoot. I’d take Shipley…or maybe there is someone better at the time? Who knows? Kinda’ depends on what the picks that come before look like.

The Draft is coming right up. I’m looking forward to it. I think…anyway. Not to “knock’ T-Jax just yet…but, I’m wondering if we’ll all be left scratching our heads again this year (No Bulaga…PLEASE!). I’ll be happy if we spend two of our first three picks on our pathetic Defense. I think so, at least. NT, Safety, LB, O-line, WR…sad to say, with all the “holes”? Hard to go wrong. But also…hard to fill all the needs.

As far as Ted Ginn? Pass. I wouldn’t give a thing for the guy. If he got “cut”? Then sure…why not give him a “look”? Otherwise? No thanks.

Trouble is not in love with any one at any position. No stud at 5, good kids but not cannot miss. For whatever reason, the Chiefs will only play the 3-4 defense and that limits what college kids are available. Same for the offense, whatever kind Haley runs also limits what players fit into the Chief’s style of offense.

Again my fear is Pioli’s view. Reached for Jackson because he wanted the position covered not best college player available. Then 3rd, Magee, by the end of the year about the same as Jackson, a 1st equal to a 3rd in skill, is that sick or what? Succop, plain outstanding. The rest, kids who could not contribute to the special teams much less their positions. My fear is Pioli’s view.

#12 overall pick plus Ginn for our #5 anyone?

    ” No stud at 5…”

I don’t know how you couldn’t call Eric Berry a “stud”.

    SG,

Trading down could be good…but why on Earth do we need another well-below-average receiver?

  • April 14, 2010  - Niblick says:

The Dolphins just traded a 2nd this year and a 2nd in 2011 for Brandon Marshall. I think they will now defintely want to unload Ginn. I think you could probably get him for one of our 5th round choices. I’m not sure he is even worth that. Like someone said, perhaps he will be cut, ane you get him for nothing.

  • April 14, 2010  - Jerry says:

Shipley is head and shoulders above Ginn. Shipley is a returner, and a smart, pass catching receiver.
Third round would be a steal. Blair White is another guy to think about.

  • April 14, 2010  - SG says:

“I think you could probably get him for one of our 5th round choices.”

That would certainly be a value upgrade over what I tossed out there. I think he’s got the kick/punt return ability we need and could fill in at WR3 or WR4.

  • April 14, 2010  - SG says:

“Shipley is head and shoulders above Ginn.”

Is he? Looks like he “might” be 1/2 inch taller…and has 3 less seasons playing on Sundays. Ginn had sub-4.4 speed in the 40 whereas Shipley ran a 4.6. Ginn took it to the house 2 times last year in the kick return game (just as a side note).
